This letter is a comment on Dr. P. O. Davidson's report to the Science Council of Canada on "Graduate training and research funding for clinical psychology in Canada" (see record 2007-02137-003). The comments are extracted from a letter that was written to the President of the CPA raising some questions for consideration by the Board of Directors. With regard to the Davidson report, it must be realized that anything a reputable psychologist says as a result of a survey conducted at the request of the Science Council is likely to be taken seriously by the Council and to affect its attitudes and policies materially. On the other hand, the recognition that the CPA should speak for psychology on matters of research funding means that what it says on the same topic will also be taken seriously. More than that, it means that a great responsibility devolves on the Association, since failure to speak up on any matter when it has what amounts to a permanent invitation to do so can only be construed as assent. PIAP (Psychologists Interested in the Advancement of Psychotherapy) in July 1962 sent questionnaires to all American Psychological Association Directory listed psychologists expressing interest in psychotherapy (N = 4494); 38% were returned. Results of the 12 item questionnaire are summarized. 17% of the respondents (N = 286) provided comments or offered suggestions which are discussed under the headings of Training, Private Practice, Organizational Issues, Problems of Subdoctoral Therapists, Research and New Directions, and Journal on Psychotherapy. Upon the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the American Psychological Association (APA), the author reflects on a number of events in the recent past that have increased the visibility of issues concerning psychological research and practice in the areas of alcoholism, drug abuse, and addictive behaviors. These issues have also provided an opportunity to reflect on the growth and development of the Society of Psychologists in Addictive Behaviors (SPAB) from an organizational perspective, its publication, the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, and continuing issues in practice and research. There remain many issues for SPAB and its members to address in the future, both in the areas of the addictions and organizationally. It is our hope that a benefit of divisional status will be additional support for our efforts to function more smoothly as an organization, in a way that is more facilitative of members and responsive to them. As a Society, we must increase our efforts in enhancing our visibility. This year we feel we have really begun to do this. Being a member of several committees, I have been fortunate to meet colleagues who are truly interested in the problem of addictions. As a result, this year's Society of Psychologists in Addictive Behaviors Symposium will be cosponsored by at least three divisions of the American Psychological Association. Advertisements about our Symposium, Journal, and membership are being placed in all the divisional newsletters of the APA. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest is presented to a person (or persons) who has advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by distinguished contributions in such areas as the identification or solution of significant social problems; unusual initiative or dedication, in activity that makes psychology more accessible in meeting client and/or community needs; and the integration of psychology with social action. This year awards were presented to Isidor Chein and Nicholas Hobbs at the APA convention in Montreal. The purpose of this Special Issue of Canadian Psychology is to celebrate the significant role the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists has played since its first adoption by the Canadian Psychological Association in 1986, 25 years ago. Twelve articles, two in French, are included. The articles describe the process of the Code's continuing evolution, its applicability in the different legal framework of Quebec, investigations into the Code, and its application to old and new ethical issues related to research, teaching, and practice (e.g., the development of research ethics in Canada, the use of vignettes in ethics teaching, mandatory self-disclosure by students, rural psychology, the use of technology, and humanitarian work). The final article provides a series of commentaries by psychologists from other countries regarding the Code and its international impact. "The purpose of this paper is to present a method for identifying those members of the American Psychological Association having a doctor's degree who are likely to make important contributions to psychology. The approach is essentially that of considering at one time two bits of information about a person." "The sample… consists of 1,974 persons who became Associates of APA and received the doctor's degree during the period 1941 to 1951… ." Three configurations are discussed: (1) those who became APA Associates before they received the doctor's degree; (2) those who became Associates after they received the degree; (3) those who became Associates the same year they received the degree. Criteria of contributions to psychology are publication in the 1954 APA journals and donation of money to APA Building Fund in 1954 and 1955. Three tables of results are presented. The Early Career Awards, given for the first time in 1974, recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not be more than eight years post-PhD. For purposes of this award, psychology has been divided into nine areas (human learning/cognition, psychopathology, physiological, animal, personality, developmental, methodological, social, and sensation/perception), and the awards are given in three-year cycles. The awards for 1980 were given in the areas of methodological, social, and sensation/perception psychology. Every year panels are selected for the three areas in which the award is to be given, and these panels recommend nominees to the Committee on Scientific Awards. Awardees included Baruch Fischhoff, Lynn A. Cooper, Shelley Taylor, and Camille Wortman. A citation and brief biography is presented for each award recipient. Discusses the natural affinity between APA's Division 36, Psychologists Interested in Religious Issues, and Division 24, the Division of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. Some members hold common membership in both divisions. The author notes that Division 36 could profit from a more sophisticated analysis of its philosophical presuppositions, and their implications—a task to which Division 24 colleagues might lend a hand, with the advantage of greater objectivity. This article summarizes empirical and theoretical research focusing on the structure and content of the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists (Canadian Psychological Association [CPA], 1986, 1991, 2000). Functional grammar and content analyses show that, compared to other codes, the CPA code is written in a way that is empowering for the decision-maker. Moreover, it is more likely than other codes of ethics to provide a rationale for ethical behaviour. Preliminary support for the hierarchical organisation of the ethical principles of the CPA code exists but more research is needed to determine if the hierarchy leads to more consistent decision-making in the resolution of ethical dilemmas. Recommendations for future research directions are outlined. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Comments on an article by W. Dennis and E. Girden (Participation in APA voting. Amer. Psychologist, 1955, 10, 212-214) which showed that only 52.1 percent of Fellows and only 37.1 percent of Associates voted for APA President in the 1954 election. The current author notes that, quite aside from the obvious fact that many either do not know the candidates or do not have any marked choice among them, there is a still more important factor: many in academic work do not receive the ballot until the deadline has passed. It is argued that if greater participation in APA voting is desired, dates connected with voting should be changed so that they will occur one month earlier.
