Gives a citation to Stanley Schachter "For consistent, coherent, and creative work that has materially advanced our understanding of behavior in social contexts. He has chosen to explore new areas and new problems that promised to be important and applied exceptional experimental ingenuity in making his explorations successful. Bringing to bear on his problems a fine sense of the necessary relation between theory and data, his studies always produced meaningful knowledge. By exploring his ideas in natural setting:; as well as in the laboratory, he kept richness and precision together in his work. The measure of a man's contribution to science is what we have learned as a result of his work. From the work of Stanley Schachter we have gained new knowledge of the social psychological effects of being deviant in a group; of the circumstances under which people seek out others and the basic: nature of group support; of how groups provide the context within which emotions are defined; and even the effects of the social context on psychophysiological effects. He has contributed broadly and deeply." The citation is followed by a biography of Schachter and a list of his scientific publications. Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1972 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by Edwin E. Ghiselli. The award citation reads: "A remarkably multifaceted set of distinguished contributions spanning a 40-year career. He began his scientific life as a neurophysiological psychologist and, in the absence of an established literature or technology to guide him, pioneered in the study of subcortical mechanisms. He has provided the same definitive guidance in applied psychology. Ghiselli and industrial psychology are virtually synonymous. Few issues concerning the behavior of people at work, from the conceptualization of performance to the measurement of values, have not been touched by his influence. Psychometric theory has also felt his impact. No one can approach a problem in psychological prediction without taking into account his work on prediction models. In sum, Ghiselli is one of the few who have productively spanned the two disciplines of scientific psychology." A brief biography and listing of the recipient's scientific writings are included. Reviews the book, Law and mental health: International perspectives. Volume 1 by David N. Weisstub (1984). This is the first volume in a series designed to provide an international perspective on central issues in law and mental health. The editor, David N. Weisstub, is a professor of law at Osgoode Hall and was the founding editor of the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. He is well qualified to accomplish his stated goal of establishing an international network of scholars and increase communication between countries. The first volume, however, focuses primarily on American jurisprudence. Weisstub argues that this is appropriate because the United States "has been a forerunner and, indeed, has functioned as a testing ground in the field." Subsequent volumes will include research reviews and examinations of legislative and judicial trends in other countries, focusing on topics such as malpractice, deinstitutionalization, guardianship, and competency. The present volume is comprised of six chapters, each on a different topic with the exception of two chapters on criminal responsibility. Few readers will be interested in all the chapters, but anyone interested in mental health law will find something of interest. The chapters are of uniformly high quality and the book is an excellent reference work. Since there are only six chapters, it may be of use to potential readers to have a brief overview of each. This volume (and the ones to follow) should prove to be a valuable reference for psychologists interested in legal issues. It may also be put to good use in graduate seminars in law and psychology because of the breadth of issues covered in the volume. Presents the 1965 American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to Floyd Henry Allport. The citation reads: "For leading the way to an understanding of behavior at both the organismic and the collective levels. Despite the unmatched complexities of the phenomena, his proposals are meaningful and verifiable. The main goal he has set before us is to see clearly the way events structure themselves within individuals and between them. The establishment of quantitative relationships between variables is seen as a means but not an end. He has followed less travelled paths, and along the way has developed fresh approaches to the study of conformity, attitudes, personality, and institutional processes. His students have been strengthened by his friendship and challenged by his towering standards of scholarship, experimentation, and exposition." Biographical information is also provided, along with a list of the award winner's scientific writings. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

David C. McClelland is recognized for his achievements in psychology. This article provides a citation explaining his accomplishments, a biography and a selected bibliography. The citation is as follows: "For leading the vanguard of a new motivational psychology bridging the study of personality and society, beginning forty years ago with methodological innovations and empirical discoveries of lasting significance in pioneering studies of the Achievement Motive and the Achieving Society. By experimental arousal of achievement motivation, he established the validity of using a particular kind of imaginative thought content as its measure. Combining bold vision and practicality, he turned traditional arguments into testable hypotheses. His broad and indelible impact on the social sciences is amplified by seminal writings on personality, the power motive, motivation training—and by the productivity he inspired in his students." Presents the citation, biography, and selected bibliography of Jon Kaas, one of the recipients of the American Psychological Association's Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contributions. From the awardee's citation: "For landmark contributions to our understanding of how sensory information is distributed and integrated within the brain. His discovery of multiple visual, somatosensory, and auditory areas, and of their hierarchical arrangement into sensory systems, has illuminated and transformed the study of perception; his specification of homologies among sensory areas across mammals has greatly enriched our knowledge of brain evolution; and his demonstrations of the plasticity of sensory areas in adult animals have revolutionized our appreciation of neural dynamics. He has inspired students and colleagues alike with his enthusiasm and devotion to research, and with his warmth and generosity to others." Acknowledges the presentation of the American Psychological Association (APA) 1968 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to James Emmett Birren. The citation reads: "For his internationally recognized leadership in the field of behavior gerontology, based upon years of experimental research on neurological, sensory, perceptual, and thinking functions. He has particularly emphasized the analysis of speed and accuracy and their physiological correlates in relation to age in the elderly. His work has contributed support for the hypothesis that reduced input of information is an important key to much apparent intellectual decline in the aged." A biography and a listing of the awardee's scientific writings are also included. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
