This paper presents two‐dimensional information on the residual stresses in 8 mm 5383‐H321 aluminium plates joined by double pass (DP) friction stir welding (FSW). It considers the inherent variability in residual stress magnitudes along 0.5 m lengths of weld pass, and their modification under a sequence of applied fatigue loads. This represents one of a planned series of experiments aimed at illuminating the effects of fatigue cycling on residual stress fields. In this particular case, the magnitudes of the bending fatigue loads (R= 0.1) were chosen to correlate with the measured proof strengths of the weld metal (approximately 160 MPa) and the parent plate (approximately 260–270 MPa). In four‐point bend S–N tests at R= 0.1 on 40 mm wide FS welded specimens of this alloy and plate thickness, these peak stress levels correspond to lives of around 105 cycles and 107 cycles, respectively. Results from the work indicate that significant variability exists among welded plates in peak compressive stress magnitudes (a range of perhaps ?50 MPa to ?140 MPa), although peak tensile stresses were relatively low and more consistent (from around 0 to 30 MPa). Fatigue loading accentuates the peak‐to‐valley stress change and causes an overall translation of the stresses to become more positive. Peak tensile stresses increase several‐fold during fatigue cycling.  相似文献

Tool wear behaviour on microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded zones of Ti–6Al–4V alloy was evaluated. SEM examination, EDS analysis and X-ray diffraction results indicated that severe wear of the tool is indicated by the presence of WC-Co particles in the stir zone at rotational speed of 630?rev?min?1 and travel speed of 8?mm?min?1. Micro-hardness, tensile tests and fractographical examinations also reflected that these particles make the material more brittle and reduce the mechanical strength by 40%. However at travel speed of 22?mm?min?1, tool wear is less, hardness distribution is more uniform and enhanced ductility and strength is achieved.  相似文献

This work investigates the effect of SiC particles on the microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar friction stir welding between AA6061-T6 and AA2024-T351. Two variations in the size of SiC particles, along the joint line, various groove width, and tool offset, were used for the welding. It was found that the joints made by rotational speed of 800?rev?min?1, travelling speed of 31.5?mm?min?1, groove width of 0.3?mm, and tool offset of 0.5?mm exhibited the most uniform distribution of particles for both micro- and nano-scale SiC particles. Additionally, the smaller and rounded equiaxed particles result in easier material flow, a more uniform metal matrix composite, the smallest grain size in the stir zone and the highest tensile strength.  相似文献

In this study, AA 6063-T6 alloy plates were joined via friction stir welding using three different pin geometries (i. e., helical threaded, pentagonal and triangular) under various process parameters of tool rotational speed and welding speed. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the various welded joints were investigated. Macro-structural observations revealed that kissing bonds occurred in the welded joints due to fractured oxide layers. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the stir zones of the welded joints exhibited phases of Al8Fe2Si, Al5FeSi, and Mg2Si. In the welded joints, processed using a helical threaded pin, no tunnel-type defect was detected to occur; specimens were fractured outside of the joint region during tensile tests, indicating that the kissing bonds formed in the stir zones did not cause any deterioration in tensile strength or ductility. The welded joints processed using a helical threaded, pentagonal and triangular pin at 500 min−1 tool rotational speed and 80 mm min−1 welding speed exhibited a ductile deformation behavior along with a tensile strength in the range of 153 MPa to 155 MPa.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to analyse residual stress of the Al/steel butt joint using the laser welding–brazing. The welding parameters were a laser power of 1200?W, a welding speed of 600?mm min?1, thickness of 150×150×2?mm and 150×150×1?mm, respectively. The residual stress was measured by the hole-drilling methods. Then, a finite-element model of the welding process was established, and it was verified by experiments. The results show that the calculated results are in conformity with the experimental results. The longitudinal residual stress on the galvanised steel (329?MPa) is larger than that on the aluminium alloy (293?MPa). At the location of the fixture, the longitudinal residual stress is substantially zero.  相似文献

Process force and tensile properties in friction stir welding of AA2024 sheets were studied. Results show that the forces present a periodic variation with the same periodicity which is nearly equal to the time of one tool rotation, and thus it only depends on rotation speed. With increasing welding speed the forces increase gradually, while with increasing rotation speed the forces first decrease and then increase. Joints with superior strength-ductility synergy are produced at 900?rev?min?1–300?mm?min?1 and 1000?rev?min?1–350?mm?min?1. These joints experience nearly the same peak temperature and axial force. As heat input increases the failure initiates from the interface between nugget zone (NZ) and thermo-mechanically affected zone to heat-affected zone continuing to NZ.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to present a case study relating to the dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) ability of AA 7075‐T651 and AA 6013‐T6 by applying pin offset technique. An orthogonal array L18 was conducted to perform the overlapped weld seams using three different values of pin offset, welding speed and tool rotational speed along with two different pin profiles determine the impact of welding parameters on the tensile properties of friction stir welded joints. The nugget zone for each of overlapped weld seams exhibited a complex structure and also, the pin offset and profile also were found to have a great impact on the microstructural evolution of the nugget zone. The ultimate tensile strength, elongation at the rapture and bending strength of welded joints were measured in the ranges of 194–215 MPa, 1.79–3.34 % and 203–352 MPa. From the Taguchi based Grey relational analysis, the optimum welding condition was determined for the welded joint performed using a single fluted pin profile with the zero pin offset, tool rotational speed of 630 min?1 and welding speed of 63 mm/min. Microstructural and macro‐structural observations revealed that welded joints exhibiting lower tensile strength are consistent of various types of defects (e. g. cracks, tunnels and cavities). The fracture location of welded joints was found to be on the heat affected zone and between the heat affected zone and AA 6013‐base metal. The tool and pin wear was not observed during the welding applications

Al‐5086 H32 plates with a thickness of 3 mm were friction stir butt‐welded using different welding speeds at a tool rotational speed of 1600 rpm. The effect of welding speed on the weld performance of the joints was investigated by conducting optical microscopy, microhardness measurements and mechanical tests (i.e. tensile and bend tests). The effect of heat input during friction stir welding on the microstructure, and thus mechanical properties, of cold‐rolled Al‐ 5086 plates was also determined. The experimental results indicated that the maximum tensile strength of the joints, which is about 75 % that of the base plate, was obtained with a traverse speed of 200 mm/min at the tool rotational speed used, e.g. 1600 rpm, and the maximum bending angle of the joints can reach 180o. The maximum ductility performance of the joints was, on the other hand, relatively low, e.g. about 20 %. These results are not unexpected due to the loss of the cold‐work strengthening in the weld region as a result of the heat input during welding, and thus the confined plasticity within the stirred zone owing to strength undermatching. Higher joint performances can also be achieved by increasing the penetration depth of the stirring probe in butt‐friction stir welding of Al‐5086 H32 plates.  相似文献

The effect of relatively high travel speed on the microstructure (SEM) and mechanical properties of friction stir welded dissimilar 5754 Al/AZ31Mg alloys has been characterised. With the Al alloy placed on the advancing side, travel speed were varied from 100 to 350?mm?min?1 and the mechanical properties of the joint subsequently determined by tensile tests on cross-section samples. The best (but moderate) properties were obtained at 200?mm?min?1. The joint failed by brittle fracture along localised bands on the severely deformed Al side containing Al3Mg2. The lowest travel speed developed a eutectic Al12Mg17 microstructure. The joint obtained at 100 and 250?mm?min?1 failed, by ductile and brittle mixed fracture modes, at the bonding interface containing continuous intermetallic compounds.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of rotation speed and dwell time on the mechanical properties and microstructure of friction stir spot welded joints of dissimilar aluminum and titanium alloys were investigated. Aluminum AA6061 and titanium Ti-6Al-4 V alloys were selected as the work piece. The joint quality, mechanical behavior, and microstructural evolution in the welded regions were considerably affected by the welding parameters. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of Ti3Al intermetallic compounds near the thermomechanical affected zone, which significantly affected the properties of the welding joint. Maximum tensile shear load was produced at 1000 min−1 and 10 s dwell time. Moreover, the welding joint microhardness was improved with increasing the rotation speed.  相似文献

In this study, dissimilar friction stir welding of aluminum 5052 and stainless steel 304 has been carried out with different process parameters. This investigation provides a better insight regarding the defect formation of the weld joints with tilt angles ranging from 0 ° to 2.5 °. The experiments were conducted according to Taguchi L9 orthogonal array by changing the tool rotational speed, and welding speed. The tool pin was kept 70 % towards the aluminum with the tool rotational speed ranging from 800 min−1 to 1200 min−1 with a varying traverse speed of 5 mm/min to 15 mm/min. The bottom part of the stir zone was perfectly welded without any defects. Tunnel defect was detected just above the bottom welded surface. Microstructural analysis reveals that the weld between both materials is formed on the retreating side, whereas on the advancing side, the weld was formed with void defects. Mostly, the stir zone is filled with irregular shaped aluminum and steel parts which were detached from the base material. Several other defects such as voids, cracks, and fragmental defects were observed in the stir zone irrespective of the process parameters. It was observed from the experimental investigations that the tunnel defect can be reduced by increasing the tilt angle.  相似文献

Abstract

The microstructural change related with the hardness profile has been evaluated for friction stir welded, age hardenable 6005 Al alloy. Frictional heat and plastic flow during friction stir welding created fine and equiaxed grains in the stir zone (SZ), and elongated and recovered grains in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The heat affected zone (HAZ), identified only by the hardness result because there is no difference in grain structure compared to the base metal, was formed beside the weld zone. A softened region was formed near the weld zone during the friction stir welding process. The softened region was characterised by the dissolution and coarsening of the strengthening precipitate during friction stir welding. Sound joints in 6005 Al alloys were successfully formed under a wide range of friction stir welding conditions. The maximum tensile strength, obtained at 507 mm min-1 welding speed and 1600 rev min-1 tool rotation speed, was 220 MPa, which was 85% of the strength of the base metal.  相似文献

In this study, AA 6013 aluminum plates were butt‐welded with friction stir welding via pin offset technique. Macrostructural observations revealed that kissing bonds, originated from the broken oxide layers, were found to occur in the welded joints. The fracture location of welded joints after tensile tests was found to be outside the joint area, revealing that kissing bonds which were formed in the stir zone exhibited no detrimental effect on the mechanical properties of joints. Microstructural observations revealed that phases belonging to Mg2Si, Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 and Al(MnFe)Si were observed in the x‐ray diffraction pattern of friction stir welded joints. The highest tensile strength with a value of 206 MPa was achieved with the process parameters of 1.5 mm pin offset towards the advancing side and 500 min?1 tool rotational speed, leading the ratio of tensile strength of joint to ultimate tensile strength of base metal, also known as joint efficiency, to reach 74 %.  相似文献

Mechanical properties and microstructure of friction stir-welded AZ31 based on variety post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) temperatures were evaluated, and an optimal PWHT condition was identified. At rotational speed of 1200?rev?min?1 and welding speed of 300?mm?min?1, the average yield tensile, tensile strength and elongation of friction stir-welded joints was 92.5?MPa, 199.1?MPa and 7.3%, respectively. It was found that (300°C – 1?h) heat treatment after welding was more beneficial than other heat treatments in enhancing the mechanical properties and homogenising grain size. The maximum yield and tensile strength was 139.9 and 238.4?MPa, respectively, tensile longitudinal and compressive transverse residual stress could be effectively eliminated, and the fatigue strength increased 34.2% comparing with as-welded joints.  相似文献

Friction stir spot welding has a great impact on the joining process of thermoplastics. In this work, effects of varying rotational speed, plunge depth, and dwell time were investigated on polycarbonate sheets and a filler sheet was utilized to reduce the keyhole size of friction stir spot welded joints. The welding parameters were arranged according to Taguchi L9 orthogonal design of experiments to determine the optimum levels of process parameters. Lap shear tests were performed to examine the mechanical properties. Using analysis of variance and signal to noise ratio, influences of each welding parameter on the lap joint shear load were evaluated. According to achieved results, tool rotational speed has the highest effect while plunge depth has minimum effect on the mechanical behavior of friction stir spot welded joints. Optimum process parameters were attained as 1000 min−1 for rotational speed, 10.5 mm of plunge depth, and 40 s of dwell time. Optimized process parameters showed 15 % improvement compared to the initial welding parameters. Cross-sectional appearances of welded samples which play an important role in determining lap joint shear load were analyzed by morphological and visual comparisons. Failure modes of the fractured samples for lowest, moderate and highest lap joint shear loads were also observed.  相似文献

Novel friction stir welding (FSW) technique, characterised by big concave upper and small convex lower shoulders, for aluminium hollow extrusion was studied. Assisted with the lower shoulder, root flaws due to the lack of tool penetration have been eliminated. The tensile strength increased with increasing welding speed. As the welding speed increases from 50 to 200 mm min?1, the width of the welding nugget zone (WNZ) decreases, and the ductile fractured location occurred at WNZ instead of heat affected zone (HAZ) adjacent to thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ). The interface between the TMAZ and HAZ exhibited the lowest microhardness. The results indicated that the novel FSW method has the potential to join tubular structures and hollow profiles widely used in transportation industries.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the properties of a friction stir welded Ni base alloy, Inconel 600 (single phase type) was selected. Sound friction stir welds without weld defect were obtained at 150 and 200 mm/min in welding speed, however, a groove like defect occurred at 250 mm/min. The electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) method was used to analyze the grain boundary character distribution. As a result, dynamic recrystallization was observed at all conditions, and the grain refinement was achieved in the stir zone, and it was gradually accelerated from 19 μm in average grain size of the base material to 3.4 μm in the stir zone with increasing the welding speed. It also has an effect on the mechanical properties so that friction stir welded zone showed 20% higher microhardness and 10% higher tensile strength than those of base material.  相似文献

The effects of various surface treatment techniques on the fatigue crack growth performance of friction stir welded 2195 aluminum alloy were investigated. The objective was to reduce fatigue crack growth rates and enhance the fatigue life of welded joints. The crack growth rates were assessed and characterized for different peening conditions at a stress ratio (R) of 0.1, and 0.7. The surface and through-thickness residual stress distribution were also investigated and presented for the various regions in the weld. Tensile residual stresses introduced during the welding process were found to become significantly compressive, particularly after laser peening. The effect of the compressive stresses was deemed responsible for increasing the resistance to fatigue crack growth of the welds. The results indicate a significant reduction in fatigue crack growth rates using laser peening compared to shot peening and native welded specimens. This reduced fatigue crack growth rate was comparable to the base unwelded material.  相似文献

Several concepts are used for the fatigue design of welded joints. In this paper investigations are presented, which were carried out in a joint project between five research institutes [1]. The aim is to investigate currently applied fatigue concepts with respect to their limitations, compatibility and reliability, in order to improve the accuracy of lifetime estimation and to simplify the choice of the optimum fatigue concept. Here, the results of the investigation of welded joints in rotating universal joint shafts are shown [2]. In the critical weld, a structural steel and a quenched and tempered steel are joined. In practice, stresses result from rotating bending, torsion and also residual stresses are sometimes present. Several welding techniques, MAG, TIG and laser welding, and two seam geometries were investigated with regard to their influence on fatigue strength. Experiments were conducted with welded tube specimens representative of the actual component application and with derived flat specimens as detail specimens. The welded sheet thickness was 5.5 mm. Fatigue strength was investigated from 104 to 107 numbers of cycles. In numerical analyses, nominal stress, structural hot spot stress and elastic notch stress with reference radii of 0.3 mm and 0.05 mm were calculated. In the comparison of the concepts, their respective advantages and disadvantages have been demonstrated. A comparison of the results with the IIW recommendation for fatigue design of welded joints and components [3] has been carried out and improvements have been suggested.  相似文献
