Properties of the J, L and M integrals, proposed by Knowles and Sternberg for homogeneous materials are explored here for bi-material interfaces. The integrals are shown to satisfy the conservation law under certain conditions on the interfaces. Relations between the stress intensity factors and the conservation integrals for interfacial cracks in isotropic, linear-elastic materials are derived. The conservation integrals for some interfacial cracks are applied to get the stress intensity factors in a very simple way without solving the complicated boundary value problems. For interfacial cracks in finite-sized medium some numerical computations are carried out to verify the usefulness of the conservation integrals.  相似文献

A numerical procedure, based on the concept of the Jk-integrals, is presented for computation of the mixed-mode stress intensity factors for curved cracks. Since no auxiliary solutions are required in practice, this approach can be applicable for problems containing cracks of arbitrary curved shape in generally anisotropic elastic solids. Nevertheless, while these integrals are demonstrated to be path-independent in a modified sense, it is noted that the near-tip region is always inevitably included. Attention is therefore addressed to modeling of the singular behavior in the vicinity of the crack tip in such manner that the calculation is based on a combination of full-field finite element analysis and near-tip asymptotic results. With this, no particular singular elements are required in the calculation.  相似文献

A new unified and integrated method for the numerical‐analytical calculation of Jk‐integrals of an in‐plane traction free interfacial crack in homogeneous orthotropic and isotropic bimaterials is presented. The numerical algorithm, based on the boundary element crack shape sensitivities, is generic and flexible. It applies to both straight and curved interfacial cracks in anisotropic and/or isotropic bimaterials. The shape functions of semidiscontinuous quadratic quarter point crack tip elements are correctly scaled to adapt the singular oscillatory near tip field of tractions. The length of crack is designated as the design variable to compute the strain energy release rate precisely. Although an analytical equation relating J1 and stress intensity factors (SIFs) exists, a similar relation for J2 in debonded anisotropic solids for decoupling SIFs is not available. An analytical expression was recently derived by this author for J2 in aligned orthotropic/orthotropic bimaterials with a straight interface crack. Using this new relation and the present computed Jk values, the SIFs can be decoupled without the need for an auxiliary equation. Here, the aforementioned analytical relation is reconstructed for cubic symmetry/isotropic bimaterials and used with the present numerical algorithm. An example with known analytical SIFs is presented. The numerical and analytical magnitudes of Jk for an interface crack in orthotropic/orthotropic and cubic symmetry/isotropic bimaterials show an excellent agreement.  相似文献

This paper presents the domain form of interaction integrals based on three independent formulations for computation of stress intensity factors, electric displacement intensity factors and magnetic induction intensity factors for cracks in functionally graded magnetoelectroelastic materials. Conservation integrals of J-type are derived based on the governing equations for magnetoelectroelastic media and the crack tip asymptotic fields of homogeneous magnetoelectroelastic medium as auxiliary fields. Each of the formulations differs in the way auxiliary fields are imposed in the evaluation of interaction integrals and each of them results in a consistent form of the interaction integral in the sense that extra terms naturally appear in their derivation to compensate for the difference in the chosen crack tip asymptotic fields of homogeneous and functionally graded magnetoelectroelastic medium. The additional terms play an important role of ensuring domain independence of the presented interaction integrals. Comparison of numerically evaluated intensity factors through the three consistent formulations with those obtained using displacement extrapolation method is presented by means of two examples.  相似文献

Delamination along an interface between dissimilar materials is the primary cause of failure in microstructures like electronic packages, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), and so on. Fracture mechanics is a powerful tool for the evaluation of delamination. However, many materials used in microstructures such as composite materials and single crystals are anisotropic materials. Stress intensity factors of an interface crack between dissimilar anisotropic materials, which were proposed by Hwu, are useful for evaluating the reliability of microstructures. However, numerical methods that can analyze the stress intensity factors of an interface crack between anisotropic materials have not been developed. We propose herein a new numerical method for the analysis of an interface crack between dissimilar anisotropic materials. The stress intensity factors of an interface crack are based on the generalized plane strain condition. The energy release rate is obtained by the virtual crack extension method in conjunction with the finite element method for the generalized plane strain condition. The energy release rate is separated into individual modes of the stress intensity factors KI, KII, and KIII, using the principal of superposition. The target problem to be solved is superposed on the asymptotic solution of displacement in the vicinity of an interface crack tip, which is described using the Stroh formalism. Analyses of the stress intensity factors of center interface cracks between semi-infinite dissimilar anisotropic media subjected to concentrated self-balanced loads on the center of crack surfaces and to uniform loads are demonstrated. The present method accurately provides mode-separated stress intensity factors using relatively coarse meshes for the finite element method.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of bi-material interfacial cracks using EFGM and XFEM   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, bi-material interfacial cracks have been simulated using element free Galerkin method (EFGM) and extended finite element method (XFEM) under mode-I and mixed mode loading conditions. Few crack interaction problems of dissimilar layered materials are also simulated using extrinsic partition of unity enriched approach. Material discontinuity has been modeled by a signed distance function whereas strong discontinuity has been modeled by two functions i.e. Heaviside and asymptotic crack tip enrichment functions. The stress intensity factors for bi-material interface cracks are numerically evaluated using the modified domain form of interaction integral. The results obtained by EFGM and XFEM for bi-material edge and center cracks are compared with those available in literature. In order to check the validity of simulations, the results have been obtained for two different ratio of Young’s modulus.  相似文献

The transition from small-scale creep to large-scale creep ahead of a crack tip or an interface edge with strong elastic stress singularity at the loading instant causes stress relaxation and the decrease of stress intensity in general. However, this study shows that the stress near the interface edge of bi-material with no or weak elastic stress singularity increases after the loading instant and brings about the stress concentration during the transition. In addition, the creep strain distribution of this bi-material after the loading instant is different from that occurred in the transition of an interface edge with strong elastic stress singularity or a crack tip (notch root). The criterion for the increase or decrease of stress intensity near the interface edge proved by the finite element method is proposed in this study. The stress intensity near the interface edge increases when the elastic stress singularity is lower than the creep stress singularity (λel < λcr) and vice versa.  相似文献

The stress field around the crack tip near an elastically matched but strength-mismatched interface body in a bimetallic system is influenced when the crack tip yield or cohesive zone spreads to the interface body. The concept of crack tip stress intensity parameter, K tip, is therefore employed in fracture analysis of the bimetallic body. A computational model to determine K tip is reviewed in this paper. The model, based upon i) Westergaard??s complex potentials coupled with Kolosov?CMuskhelishvili??s relations between a crack tip stress field and complex potentials and ii) Dugdale??s representation of the cohesive zone clearly indicates shielding or amplifying effects of strength mismatch across the interface, depending upon the direction of the strength gradient, over the crack tip. The model is successfully validated by conducting series of high cycle fatigue tests over Mode I cracks advancing towards various strength-mismatched interfaces in bimetallic compact tension specimens prepared by electron beam welding of elastically identical weak ASTM 4340 alloy and strong MDN 250 maraging steels.  相似文献

The present paper provides the plastic η factor solutions for J testing of single-edge-cracked specimens in four-point bend (SE(PB)), based on limit (slip line field) and detailed finite element limit analyses. Both homogeneous specimens and bi-material specimens with interface cracks are considered. Moreover, two different η factor solutions are developed, one for J (or C* in creep crack growth testing) estimation based on the load-load line displacement (LLD) records, ηpVLL, and the other J estimation based on the load-crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) records, ηpCMOD.It is found that the use of load-LLD records can be recommended only for testing deeply cracked SE(PB) specimens. Moreover, depending on how the LLD is measured, a different value of ηpVLL should be used. On the other hand, the use of load-CMOD records is recommended for all possible crack lengths. Moreover, the proposed ηpCMOD solution can be used not only for a homogeneous specimen but also for any bi-material specimen with an interface crack.  相似文献

Dynamic fracture mechanics theory was employed to analyze the crack deflection behavior of dynamic mode-I cracks propagating towards inclined weak planes/interfaces in otherwise homogenous elastic solids. When the incident mode-I crack reached the weak interface, it kinked out of its original plane and continued to propagate along the weak interface. The dynamic stress intensity factors and the non-singular T-stresses of the incident cracks were fitted, and then dynamic fracture mechanics concepts were used to obtain the stress intensity factors of the kinked cracks as functions of kinking angles and crack tip speeds. The T-stress of the incident crack has a small positive value but the crack path was quite stable. In order to validate fracture mechanics predictions, the theoretical photoelasticity fringe patterns of the kinked cracks were compared with the recorded experimental fringes. Moreover, the mode mixity of the kinked crack was found to depend on the kinking angle and the crack tip speed. A weak interface will lead to a high mode-II component and a fast crack tip speed of the kinked mixed-mode crack.  相似文献

Several types of singular stress fields may appear at the corner where an interface between two bonded materials intersects a traction-free edge depending on the material combinations. Since the failure of the multi-layer systems often originates at the free-edge corner, the analysis of the edge interface crack is the most fundamental to simulate crack extension. In this study, the stress intensity factors for an edge interfacial crack in a bi-material bonded strip subjected to longitudinal tensile stress are evaluated for various combinations of materials using the finite element method. Then, the stress intensity factors are calculated systematically with varying the relative crack sizes from shallow to very deep cracks. Finally, the variations of stress intensity factors of a bi-material bonded strip are discussed with varying the relative crack size and material combinations. This investigation may contribute to a better understanding of the initiation and propagation of the interfacial cracks.  相似文献

The mode I and mode II asymptotic stresses around a notch tip are in general governed by different orders of singularity. Direct computation of the mixed-mode near-tip stress field therefore appears to be difficult. In this paper, we propose a pair of contour integrals JkR. The integrals are shown to be path-independent in a modified sense and so they can be accurately evaluated with finite element solutions. As an aside, by defining a pair of generalized stress intensity factors (SIFs) (KI)β and (KII)β, the relationship between JkR and the SIFs is derived and expressed as functions of the notch angle β. Once the JkR-integrals are accurately computed, the generalized SIFs and, consequently, the asymptotic mixed-mode stress field can then be properly determined. The feasibility of our formulation is demonstrated in two numerical examples, where various instances with different notch angles are considered. No particular singular elements are used in this study.  相似文献

First, the near-tip stress and electric displacement fields are analytically solved for a dynamically propagating interfacial crack in a piezoelectric bimaterial. Second, from the rate formulation of the energy balance in a piezoelectric material, the path independent dynamic J integral is derived, which has the physical significance of the energy release rate. Using the present near-tip analytical solutions, the relationships between the dynamic J integral and the stress and electric displacement intensity factors are also obtained. It is shown that the path independent dynamic J integral contains the static J integral and the dynamic J integral for elastic materials, and static J integral for piezoelectric materials as special cases. Third, for an interfacial crack in a piezoelectric bimaterial, the path independent separated dynamic J integrals are derived, which have the physical significance of energy flow rates into the propagating interfacial crack tip from the individual material sides or, equivalently, the separated dynamic energy release rates. Fourth, to accurately evaluate mixed-mode stress and electric displacement intensity factors, the component separation method of the dynamic J integral is developed. Finally, the finite element analyses of a static stationary interfacial crack in a piezoelectric bimaterial subject to mechanical, electrical and combined loading are carried out to demonstrate the applicability of the generalized (dynamic) J integral and the separated J integral, and the component separation method.  相似文献

It is well known that microcracking in brittle materials results in a reduction of the stress intensity factor (SIF) and energy release rate (ERR). The reduced SIF or ERR represents crack tip shielding which is of significant interest to micromechanics and material science researchers. However, the effect of microcracking on the SIF and ERR is a complicated subject even for isotropic homogeneous materials, and becomes much more formidable in case of interface cracks in bonded dissimilar solids. To unravel the micromechanics of interface crack tip shielding in bonded dissimilar anisotropic solids, an interface crack interacting with arbitrarily oriented subinterface microcracks in bonded dissimilar anisotropic materials is studied. After deducing the fundamental solutions for a subinterface crack under concentrated normal and tangential tractions, the present interaction problem is reduced to a system of integral equations which is then solved numerically. A J‐integral analysis is then performed with special attention focused on the J2‐integral in a local coordinate system attached to the microcracks. Theoretical and numerical results reassert the conservation law of the J‐integral derived for isotropic materials 1 , 2 also to be valid for bonded dissimilar anisotropic materials. It is further concluded that there is a wastage when the remote J‐integral transmits across the microcracking zone from infinity to the interface macrocrack tip. In order to highlight the influence of microstructure on the interfacial crack tip stress field, the crack tip SIF and ERR in several typical cases are presented. It is interesting to note that the Mode I SIF at the interface crack tip is quite different from the ERR in bonded dissimilar anisotropic materials.  相似文献

This paper presents a boundary element analysis of elliptical cracks in two joined transversely isotropic solids. The boundary element method is developed by incorporating the fundamental singular solution for a concentrated point load in a transversely isotropic bi-material solid of infinite space into the conventional displacement boundary integral equations. The multi-region method is used to analyze the crack problems. The traction-singular elements are employed to capture the singularity around the crack front. The values of stress intensity factors (SIFs) are obtained by using crack opening displacements. The results of the proposed method compare well with the existing exact solutions for an elliptical crack parallel to the isotropic plane of a transversely isotropic solid of infinite extent. Elliptical cracks perpendicular to the interface of transversely isotropic bi-material solids of either infinite extent or occupying a cubic region are further examined in detail. The crack surfaces are subject to the uniform normal tractions. The stress intensity factor values of the elliptical cracks of the two types are analyzed and compared. Numerical results have shown that the stress intensity factors are strongly affected by the anisotropy and the combination of the two joined solids.  相似文献

A study of the experimental evaluation of the stress-optical constants accurate values was undertaken by the method of caustics. A series of experiments were performed in single edge-cracked specimens made of Plexiglas (PMMA). It was found that the values of the stress-optical constants were varied with the load and the thickness of the specimens. This means that a three-dimensional stress conditions hold in the neighbourhood of the crack tip. The accurate stress intensity factor KI can be experimentally evaluated by accurate values of the stress-optical constants. The present work illuminates the complicated problem of the changing state of stress around cracks and establishes the limits of applicability of the method of caustics for the evaluation of stress intensity factors and the triaxiality factor at crack tip  相似文献

A predictive method for remaining component lifetime evaluation consists in integrating the crack growth law of the material considered in a finite element step-by-step process. So, as part of a linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis, the determination of the stress intensity factor distribution is a crucial point. The aim of the present work is to test several existing numerical techniques reported in the literature. Both the crack opening displacement extrapolation method and the J-integral approach are applied in 2D and 3D ABAQUS finite element models. The results obtained by these various means on CT specimens and cracked round bars are in good agreement with those found in the literature. Nevertheless, since the knowledge of the field near the crack tip is not required in the energetic method, the J-integral calculations seem to be a good technique to deal with the fatigue growth of general cracks.  相似文献

A new simple method for the photoelastic determination of Mode I stress intensity factors from isochromatics is proposed. This method takes into account the fact that a considerable part of the error committed in the photoelastic determination of Mode I stress intensity factors KI at crack tips, based on experimentally obtained isochromatic fringe patterns, is due to ignoring the non-singular part of the stress field near the crack tips for the evaluation of these factors. This error can, in most cases, be minimized by an appropriate selection of the polar direction from the crack tip on which the experimental measurements for the subsequent evaluation of the stress intensity factors KI are made. The suitable polar direction for determining KI depends in general on the distance of the point where measurements on the isochromatics are made from the crack tip. The method was applied to the problem of a simple crack inside an infinite medium under uniaxial and biaxial loading. A comparison of the present method whith the employed analogous methods shows the superiority of the proposed method.  相似文献

Two crack tip elements are formulated for a stationary, mode I plastic crack in planar structures using hybrid assumed stress approach, based on the secant modulus and the Newton-Raphson schemes, respectively. The stress distribution in the crack tip element is assumed to be the HRR field superimposed by the regular polynomial terms. The formulated (hybrid) crack tip elements are compatible with the isoparametric element so that they can be used conveniently along with the conventional displacement-based finite elements. The intensity of the HRR stress field, the J-integral, is determined directly from the finite element equations together with the nodal displacements. The dominance of the HRR stress field at the crack tip is pertinent to the present approach, which depends on geometry and loading conditions. Since the J-integral is globally path-independent for nonlinear elastic materials (deformation plasticity model), in order to assess the accuracy and efficiency of the methodology as compared to the contour integration approach, numerical studies of common plane-stress cracked configurations are performed for these materials. The results indicate that for a sufficiently small crack tip element size, J from the present approach correlates well, within 6 percent difference, with that from the contour integration for a wide range of material hardening coefficients if the HRR zone exists at the crack tip. These highly accurate results for J from the crack tip stresses could not be achieved without using (newly) modified variational principles and a refined numerical technique. It should be emphasized that the present methodology also can be applied to cracks in J 2 flow materials under HRR dominance. In such case, the J integral may not be globally path independent, and hence it now must be determined from the stress and strain fields near the crack tip.  相似文献
