In consideration of the low efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with low-grade heat source (LGHS), an organic Rankine cycle with ejector (EORC) and a double organic Rankine cycle (DORC) based on the ORC is introduced in this paper. The thermodynamic first law and second law analysis and comparison on the ORC, EORC and DORC cycles are conducted on the cycle’s power output, thermal efficiency, exergy loss and exergy efficiency. Water is chosen as the LGHS fluid, and the same temperature and mass flow rate of the water is the standard condition for the comparative analysis on the cycles. The emphasis is on the thermodynamic performance at the maximum net power output of the cycles. The results show the power output is higher in the EORC and DORC compared to the ORC. And the cycle’s exergy efficiency could be ranked from high to low: DORC > EORC > ORC.  相似文献

The gas turbine-modular helium reactor (GT-MHR) is currently being developed by an international consortium. In this power plant, circulating helium that has to be compressed in a single or two successive stages cools the reactor core. For thermodynamic reasons, these compression stages require pre-cooling of the helium to about 26 °C through the use of intercooler and pre-cooler in which water is used to cool the helium. Considerable thermal energy (≈300 MWth) is thus dissipated in these components. This thermal energy is then rejected to a heat sink. For different designs, the temperature ranges of the helium in the intercooler and pre-cooler could be about 100 and 150 °C, respectively. These are ideal energy sources to be used in an organic Rankine cycles for power generation. This study examines the performance of a gas-cooled nuclear power plant with closed Brayton cycle (CBC) combined with two organic Rankine cycles (ORC). More attention was paid to the irreversibilities generated in the combined cycle. Individual models are developed for each component through applications of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The effects of the turbine inlet temperature, compressor pressure ratio, evaporator temperature and temperature difference in the evaporator on the first- and second-law efficiencies and on the exergy destruction rate of the combined cycle were studied. Finally the combined cycle was optimized thermodynamically using the EES (Engineering Equation Solver) software. Based on identical operating conditions, a comparison between the GT-MHR/ORC and a simple GT-MHR cycle is also made. It was found that both the first- and second-law efficiencies of GT-MHR/ORC cycle are about 3%-points higher than that of the simple GT-MHR cycle. Also, the exergy destruction rate for GT-MHR/ORC cycle is about 5% lower than that of the GT-MHR cycle.  相似文献

This paper investigates the possibility of enhancing the performances of micro-gas turbines through the addition of a bottoming organic Rankine cycle which recovers the thermal power of the exhaust gases typically available in the range of 250–300 °C. The ORC cycles are particularly suitable for the recovery of heat from sources at variable temperatures, and for the generation of medium to small electric power. With reference to a micro-gas turbine with a size of about 100 kWe, a combined configuration could increase the net electric power by about 1/3, yielding an increase of the electrical efficiency of up to 40%.A specific analysis of the characteristics of different classes of working fluids is carried out in order to define a procedure to select the most appropriate fluid, capable of satisfying both environmental (ozone depletion potential, global warming potential) and technical (flammability, toxicity, fluid critical temperature and molecular complexity) concerns. Afterwards, a thermodynamic analysis is performed to ascertain the most favourable cycle thermodynamic conditions, from the point of view of heat recovery. Furthermore, a preliminary design of the ORC turbine (number of stages, outer diameter and rotational speed) is carried out.  相似文献

In the context of heat recovery for electric power generation, Kalina cycle (a thermodynamic cycle using as working fluid a mixture of water and ammonia) and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) represent two different eligible technologies. In this work a comparison between the thermodynamic performances of Kalina cycle and an ORC cycle, using hexamethyldisiloxane as working fluid, was conducted for the case of heat recovery from two Diesel engines, each one with an electrical power of 8900 kWe. The maximum net electric power that can be produced exploiting the heat source constituted by the exhaust gases mass flow (35 kg/s for both engines, at 346 °C) was calculated for the two thermodynamic cycles. Owing to the relatively low useful power, for the Kalina cycle a relatively simple plant layout was assumed. Supposing reasonable design parameters and a logarithmic mean temperature difference in the heat recovery exchanger of 50 °C, a net electric power of 1615 kW and of 1603 kW respectively for the Kalina and for the ORC cycle was calculated.Although the obtained useful powers are actually equal in value, the Kalina cycle requires a very high maximum pressure in order to obtain high thermodynamic performances (in our case, 100 bar against about 10 bar for the ORC cycle). So, the adoption of Kalina cycle, at least for low power level and medium–high temperature thermal sources, seems not to be justified because the gain in performance with respect to a properly optimized ORC is very small and must be obtained with a complicated plant scheme, large surface heat exchangers and particular high pressure resistant and no-corrosion materials.  相似文献

The innovative configuration of low temperature solar thermal electric generation with regenerative Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is designed, mainly consisting of small concentration ratio compound parabolic concentrators (CPC) and the regenerative ORC. Advantages of the innovative configuration such as effectively reducing heat transfer irreversibility and permitting the use of thermal storage with phase change materials (PCMs) are outlined. The numerical simulation of the heat transfer and power conversion processes are carried out based on distributed parameters. The effects of regenerative cycle on the collector, ORC, and overall electricity efficiency are then analyzed. The results indicate that the regenerative cycle has positive effects on the ORC efficiency but negative ones on the collector efficiency due to increment of the average working temperature of the first-stage collectors. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the overall electricity efficiency when regenerative cycle is adopted. Further investigation shows that there are maximum efficiencies for both the ORC and the system electric generation on conditions of constant irradiance, evaporation temperature, and environment temperature. And the regenerative temperature at which the system electricity efficiency reaches its maximum is smaller than that at which the ORC efficiency reaches its maximum by 12–21 °C. Thus, the regenerative cycle optimization of the solar thermal electric generation differs from that of a solo ORC. The system electricity efficiency with regenerative ORC is about 8.6% for irradiance 750 W/m2 and is relatively higher than that without the regenerative cycle by 4.9%.  相似文献

This study presents an energetic performance analysis for a combined power generation system consisting of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In order to simulate the SOFC–ORC combined system under steady‐state conditions, a mathematical model is developed. The developed model is used to determine the potential effects caused by the changes of the design parameters on the energetic performance of the combined system. As design parameters, turbine inlet pressure, condenser temperature, fuel utilization, current density, compressor pressure ratio, and cell operating temperature are taken into account. In this regard, the electrical power and First Law efficiency are estimated by parametrical analysis and discussed comprehensively. Results of these analyses show that the efficiency is increased about 14–25% by recovering SOFC waste heat through ORC based on investigated design parameter conditions. This paper focuses on the off-design operation of plants where a waste-to-energy (WTE) system fed with municipal solid waste (MSW) is integrated with a natural gas-fired combined cycle (CC). Integration is accomplished by sharing the steam cycle: saturated steam generated in a MSW grate combustor is exported to the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) of the combined cycle, where it is superheated and then fed to a steam turbine serving both the CC and the WTE plant. Most likely, the WTE section and the natural gas-fired CC section are subject to different operation and maintenance schedules, so that the integrated plant operates in conditions different from those giving full power output. In this paper we discuss and give performance estimates for the two situations that delimit the range of operating conditions: (a) WTE plant at full power and gas turbine down; (b) WTE plant down and gas turbine at full power. This is done for two integrated plants having the same WTE section, i.e. grate combustors with an overall MSW combustion power of 180 MWLHV, coupled with Combined Cycles based on two different heavy-duty gas turbines: a medium-size, 70 MW class turbine and a large-size, 250 MW class turbine. For each situation we discuss the control strategy and the actions that can help to achieve safe and reliable off-design operation. Heat and mass balances and performances at off-design conditions are estimated by accounting for the constraints imposed by the available heat transfer areas in boilers, heaters and condenser, as well as the characteristic curve of the steam turbine. When the gas turbine is down the net electric efficiency of the WTE section is very close to the one of the stand-alone WTE plant; instead, when the WTE section is down, the efficiency of the CC is much below the one of a stand alone CC. These performances appear most congenial to what is likely to be the operational strategy of these plants, i.e. paramount priority to waste treatment and CC dispatched according to the requirements of the national grid.  相似文献

An experiment for heat transfer of water flowing in a vertical rifled tube was conducted at subcritical and supercritical pressure. The main purpose is to explore the heat transfer characteristics of the new-type rifled tube at low mass flux. Operating conditions included pressures of 12–30 MPa, mass flux of 232–1200 kg/(m2 s), and wall heat fluxes of 133–719 kW/m2. The heat transfer performance and wall temperature distribution at various operating conditions were captured in the experiment. In the present paper, the heat transfer mechanism of the rifled tube was analyzed, the effects of pressure, wall heat flux and mass flux on heat transfer were discussed, and corresponding empirical correlations were also presented. The experimental results exhibit that the rifled tube has an obvious enhancement in heat transfer, even at low mass flux. In comparison with a smooth tube, the rifled tube efficiently prevents Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB) and delays dryout at subcritical pressure, and also improves the heat transfer of supercritical water remarkably, especially near pseudo-critical point. An increase in pressure or wall heat flux impairs the heat transfer at both subcritical and supercritical pressure, whereas the increasing mass flux has a contrary effect.  相似文献

According to fluid critical temperature and heat source temperature, organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is recognized in two categories: subcritical ORC and supercritical ORC. For a given heat source, some organic fluids not only can be used in subcritical ORC, but also can be used in supercritical ORC. For heat source with temperature of 90 °C, HFC125, HFC143a and HF218 can be used in both ORCs. Performance of the three substances in both cycles, especially in near-critical conditions is studied with expander inlet temperature of 85 °C and hot water mass flow rate of 1 kg/s. The results show that when fluids go in supercritical ORC from subcritical ORC, cycle thermal efficiency varies continuously, while mass flow rate and net power generation vary discontinuously. Maximum net power generation in near-critical conditions of subcritical ORC is higher than that of supercritical ORC. For HFC125 and HFC143a, outlet temperature of hot water decreases with the increase of heating pressure ratio. For HF218, outlet temperature of hot water increases firstly and decreases secondly with the increase of heating pressure ratio, which leads to an increase of net power generation with the increase of heating pressure ratio in high heating pressure ratio conditions.  相似文献

Biogas plants, increasing in number, produce a stream of fermentation residue with high organic content, providing an energy source which is by now mostly unused. We tested this biomass as a potential feedstock for catalytic gasification in supercritical water (T  374 °C, p  22 MPa) for methane production using a batch reactor system. The coke formation tendency during the heat-up phase was evaluated as well as the cleavage of biomass-bound sulfur with respect to its removal from the process as a salt. We found that sulfur is not sufficiently released from the biomass during heating up to a temperature of 410 °C. Addition of alkali salts improved the liquefaction of fermentation residues with a low content of minerals, probably by buffering the pH. We found a deactivation of the carbon-supported ruthenium catalyst at low catalyst-to-biomass loadings, which we attribute to sulfur poisoning and fouling in accordance with the composition of the fermentation residue. A temperature of 400 °C was found to maximize the methane yield. A residence time dependent biomass to catalyst ratio of 0.45 g g−1 h−1 was found to result in nearly full conversion with the Ru/C catalyst. A Ru/ZrO2 catalyst, tested under similar conditions, was less active.  相似文献

This study aims at improving the performance of a waste heat driven adsorption chiller by applying a novel composite adsorbent which is synthesized from activated carbon impregnated by soaking in sodium silicate solution and then in calcium chloride solution. Modeling is performed to analyze the influence of the hot water inlet temperature, cooling water inlet temperature, chilled water inlet temperatures, and adsorption/desorption cycle time on the specific cooling power (SCP) and coefficient of performance (COP) of the chiller system with the composite adsorbent. The simulation calculation indicates a COP value of 0.65 with a driving source temperature of 85 °C in combination with coolant inlet and chilled water inlet temperature of 30 °C and 14 °C, respectively. The most optimum adsorption–desorption cycle time is approximately 360 s based on the performance from COP and SCP. The delivered chilled water temperature is about 9 °C under these operating conditions, achieving a SCP of 380 W/kg.  相似文献

This paper performed a comparative analysis of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) using different working fluids, in order to recover waste heat from a solid oxide fuel cell‐gas turbine hybrid power cycle. Depending on operating parameters, criteria for the choice of the working fluid were identified. Results reveal that due to a significant temperature glide of the exhaust gas, the actual ORC cycle thermal efficiency strongly depends on the turbine inlet temperature, exhaust gas temperature, and fluid's critical point temperature. When exhaust gas temperature varies in the range of 500 K to 600 K, R123 is preferred among the nine dry typical organic fluids because of the highest and most stabilized mean thermal efficiency under wide operating conditions and its reasonable condensing pressure and turbine outlet specific volume, which in turn results in a feasible ORC cycle for practical concerns. The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), normally exceeding 60% of the waste stream in developing countries, could constitute a valuable source of feed for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). This study tested the start-up of two sets of OFMSW-fed air-cathode MFCs inoculated with wastewater sludge or cattle manure. The maximum power density obtained was 123 ± 41 mW m−2 in the manure-seeded MFCs and 116 ± 29 mW m−2 in the wastewater-seeded MFCs. Coulombic efficiencies ranged between 24 ± 5% (manure-seeded MFCs) and 23 ± 2% (wastewater-seeded MFCs). Chemical oxygen demand removal was >86% in all the MFCs and carbohydrate removal >98%. Microbial community analysis using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing demonstrated the dominance of the phylum Firmicutes (67%) on the anode suggesting the possible role of members of this phylum in electricity generation. Principal coordinate analysis showed that the microbial community structure in replicate MFCs converged regardless of the inoculum source. This study demonstrates efficient electricity production coupled with organic treatment in OFMSW-fueled MFCs inoculated with manure or wastewater.  相似文献

A feasibility study on hydrogen production from wind power on the site of Ghardaia is carried out. This study is based on the estimation of the hydrogen rate produced by a 5 kW electrolyser fed by the electricity provided by a 10 kW wind turbine.Wind speed data were used to study the monthly variation of the wind power delivered and its variation according to the height of the wind turbine tower. The obtained results show that it is possible to improve the system output by increasing the height of the wind turbine tower. Indeed, it has been obtained 3200 Nm3 of hydrogen production for a 30 m wind turbine height and 4200 Nm3 at 60 m.In addition, it has been noticed that hydrogen production varies strongly with the months of the year. Thus, the production has reached a maximum of 395 Nm3 in May and a minimum of 187 Nm3 during November and October.  相似文献

This paper has proposed an integrated advanced thermal power system to improve the performance of the conventional combined cycle power plant. Both inlet air cooling and inter-cooling are utilized within the proposed system to limit the decrease of the air mass flow contained in the given volume flow as well as reduce the compression power required. The latent heat of spent steam from a steam turbine and the heat extracted from the air during the compression process are used to heat liquefied natural gas (LNG) and generate electrical energy. The conventional combined cycle and the proposed power system are simulated using the commercial process simulation package IPSEpro. A parametric analysis has been performed for the proposed power system to evaluate the effects of several key factors on the performance. The results show that the net electrical efficiency and the overall work output of the proposed combined cycle can be increased by 2.8% and 76.8 MW above those of the conventional combined cycle while delivering 75.8 kg s?1 of natural gas and saving 0.9 MW of electrical power by removing the need for sea water pumps used hitherto. Compared with the conventional combined cycle, the proposed power system performance has little sensitivity to ambient temperature changes and shows good off-design performance.  相似文献

This study combines multi-year mesoscale modeling results, validated using offshore buoys with high-resolution bathymetry to create a wind energy resource assessment for offshore California (CA). The siting of an offshore wind farm is limited by water depth, with shallow water being generally preferable economically. Acceptable depths for offshore wind farms are divided into three categories: ≤20 m depth for monopile turbine foundations, ≤50 m depth for multi-leg turbine foundations, and ≤200 m depth for deep water floating turbines. The CA coast was further divided into three logical areas for analysis: Northern, Central, and Southern CA. A mesoscale meteorological model was then used at high horizontal resolution (5 and 1.67 km) to calculate annual 80 m wind speeds (turbine hub height) for each area, based on the average of the seasonal months January, April, July, and October of 2005/2006 and the entirety of 2007 (12 months). A 5 MW offshore wind turbine was used to create a preliminary resource assessment for offshore CA. Each geographical region was then characterized by its coastal transmission access, water depth, wind turbine development potential, and average 80 m wind speed. Initial estimates show that 1.4–2.3 GW, 4.4–8.3 GW, and 52.8–64.9 GW of deliverable power could be harnessed from offshore CA using monopile, multi-leg, and floating turbine foundations, respectively. A single proposed wind farm near Cape Mendocino could deliver an average 800 MW of gross renewable power and reduce CA's current carbon emitting electricity generation 4% on an energy basis. Unlike most of California's land based wind farms which peak at night, the offshore winds near Cape Mendocino are consistently fast throughout the day and night during all four seasons.  相似文献

As Natural resources are becoming limited and energy price dramatically increased, energy utilization with efficient systems is essentially required to be used in desalination technologies. The use of solar energy in desalination processes is one of the most promising applications of renewable energies. The primary focus on desalination by solar energy is suitable for use in remote areas. A proposed desalination system uses solar radiation, which concentrated by parabolic dish to heat up the working fluid in a closed space. Then the generated pressure in this space used to push salt water into RO module.Daily production rate of fresh water quantity for suggested system compared with other solar techniques is a promising rate for each m2 of solar radiation collecting surface. The production rate for one operation cycle could reach to 1800 L/cycle of fresh water at low water salinity (Brackish water with 5000 ppm) and 55 L/cycle at highest water salinity (sea water salinity with 42,000 ppm). The required energy needed to produce 1 kg of fresh water is also promising even when in case of using another type of energy, also operating cycle has ability of repetition according to salinity concentration through sunny hours.  相似文献

Research and development was conducted on a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack to demonstrate the capabilities of Ionomem Corporation's composite membrane to operate at 120 °C and ambient pressure for on-site electrical power generation with useful waste heat. The membrane was a composite of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Nafion®, and phosphotungstic acid. Studies were first performed on the membrane, cathode catalyst layer, and gas diffusion layer to improve performance in 25 cm2, subscale cells. This technology was then scaled-up to a commercial 300 cm2 size and evaluated in multi-cell stacks. The resulting stack obtained a performance near that of the subscale cells, 0.60 V at 400 mA cm−2 at near 120 °C and ambient pressure with hydrogen and air reactants containing water at 35% relative humidity. The water used for cooling the stack resulted in available waste heat at 116 °C. The performance of the stack was verified. This was the first successful test of a higher-temperature, PEM, fuel-cell stack that did not use phosphoric acid electrolyte.  相似文献

This paper examines the impact of increasing organic loading in a two phase anaerobic digestion system treating commercial food waste. The first phase is a series of sequentially fed leach bed reactors (LBRs). The second phase is an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB). Leachate from the leach beds, form the influent to the UASB. Effluent from the UASB is re-circulated over the leach beds. Flow rates corresponded to 1 volume of leachate per effective LBR volume per day. The theoretical organic loading rate (OLR) of the UASB is based on the conversion of volatile solids (VS) in the LBR to chemical oxygen demand (COD). The experiment was set up such that the theoretical OLR would rise from 7.1 to 8.8 to 11.8 kg COD m−3 day−1.The system operated effectively at the lowest organic loading rate producing 384 L CH4 kg VS−1 which corresponded to 72% of the value obtained in a BMP test. COD conversion efficiency was recorded at 75%. The accumulation of COD over the life of the experiment led to a situation whereby the volumetric OLR (product of COD concentration in the leachate by the flow rate) was over twice the theoretical OLR at the end of the experiment (24.3 kg VS m−3 day−1 versus 11.8 kg VS m−3 day−1). At the highest loading rate total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) reached levels of 4500 mg L−1 with pH levels of 8.15. This resulted in significant reduction of methane production.  相似文献

This paper presents the main characteristics of an innovative cooling system for the air conditioning of a truck cabin, as well as a first estimation of its performance during a standard driving cycle, obtained with a specifically developed vehicle-engine-cooling system overall model. The innovative cooling system consists of a water–zeolite adsorption–desorption system, which employs the waste heat from the engine to produce the cooling of the vehicle cabin. The developed global model is completely dynamic and is able to: reproduce the operation of the engine through a standard driving cycle, evaluate the waste heat available at the engine hydraulic loop; calculate the sequential operation of an adsorption–desorption system, calculate the condensed water per cycle, the cooling effect produced at the evaporator, and finally, the temperature and humidity evolution of the air inside the cabin. The model was validated by experimental data. The experimental tests were performed in a lab-scale adsorption chiller prototype specifically designed and realized to be driven by the low grade waste heat (80–90 °C) from the engine coolant loop of a truck. The experimental activity carried out showed that the chiller is able to generate up to 5 kW of peak cooling power at 10 °C (35 °C of condensation temperature) with a COP of 0.6. The obtained results show that the system could be able to provide a significant amount of the required cooling.  相似文献
