A hybrid methodology for continuous performance improvement (CPI) is presented, based on the joint recourse to business process re-engineering (BPR) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) principles and tools. The methodology (named HY-CHANGE) is conceived as a logical and technical support to the decision maker. It results in a number of recursive phases, where the rational and synchronous use of several tools and techniques, borrowed from the two methodologies mentioned above, is structured into a unique approach. HY-CHANGE thus offers a structured guide for performance improvement processes more suited to the enterprise reality and its dynamical evolution. The value of the methodology is to provide a structured frame to use several methodologies and tools (here referred to as ‘decisional tool-kit’) with the scope of effectively managing change processes at any level within the enterprise. The practical implications of the idea are discussed based on a case study conducted in an Italian SME producing sofas.  相似文献

Visual management (VM) has become an important lean management practice for continuous improvement and has gained increasing attention from academics and practitioners. While operations management scholars have studied its benefits and functions, the factors that enable or hinder VM implementation have not been systematically investigated. Against this background, our study analyses qualitative case study data from Swiss manufacturing firms to reveal important barriers and success factors that are relevant for the implementation of VM. Moreover, for each success factor, we present several best practices observed in the case companies to overcome the associated barriers. The results contribute to the emerging field of VM within the lean management literature and provide insights for practitioners how to implement VM more effectively.  相似文献

The Department of Auxiliary Services of the University of Miami had been the recipient of numerous anecdotal complaints by resident students regarding the service of the laundry system offered at the residential on-campus dormitories (students often complained about nonworking and/or busy machines). In this paper we present a holistic systems approach that utilizes total quality management and quantitative decision-making tools in a seamless fashion to improve the students' satisfaction and perception related to the laundry system. At the same time, other departmental important objectives, such as the implementation of an ongoing in-house procedure that supports its continuous-improvement program, are taken into account. Most studies of total quality management (TQM) have focused on the managerial aspects and associated success factors of TQM programmes, whereas relatively few studies have examined the appropriateness and performance of the large number of available tools and techniques that actually implement TQM practices. To assist in determining the best strategy for improving the performance of TQM tools and techniques, the present study integrates a modified importance–performance matrix with elements of failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) to provide a comprehensive methodology for assessing and improving the performance of TQM tools and techniques in the Taiwanese motor industry. The methodology presented here can be applied in a variety of industries, including the Taiwanese motor industry, to enable efficient utilisation of TQM tools and techniques and thus improve quality, reduce costs and shorten cycle times.  相似文献
