Two new species of Platygastrinae (Platygastridae) and the unknown female of Isolia indica (Sceliotrachelinae) from South India

Two new species, Trichacoides ranganabettensis sp. nov. Veenakumari & Buhl and Platygaster neostriatitergitis sp. nov. Veenakumari & Buhl are described from South India. The unknown female of Isolia indica is also described.     

Host records of five species of Platygastrinae (Hymenoptera,Platygastroidea: Platygastridae) from the United States,with the description of two new species of Platygaster

Platygaster tephrosiae sp. nov and P. vaccinii sp. nov. are described, with host information for these and for three further species of Platygastrinae: Metanopedias eupatorii Buhl, Platygaster munita Walker, and Trichacis virginiensis Ashmead. Hitherto undocumented galls on Galium circaezans Michx., Tephrosia virginiana (L.) Pers., and Vaccinium angustifolium Ait. are illustrated.

First record of Platygaster luteipes Buhl (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) from leaf galls on black pepper along with first report of the species from India.

Platygaster luteipes Buhl (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is reported for the first time from India. Several specimens of both sexes of the species were reared from the globular galls on mature leaves of black pepper. The hitherto undescribed male of the species is characterized and illustrated.

Stability of airborne microbes in the Louvre Museum over time

The microbial content of air has as yet been little described, despite its public health implications, and there remains a lack of environmental microbial data on airborne microflora in enclosed spaces. In this context, the aim of this study was to characterize the diversity and dynamics of airborne microorganisms in the Louvre Museum using high‐throughput molecular tools and to underline the microbial signature of indoor air in this human‐occupied environment. This microbial community was monitored for 6 month during occupied time. The quantitative results revealed variations in the concentrations of less than one logarithm, with average values of 10³ and 10⁴ Escherichia coli/Aspergillus fumigatus genome equivalent per m³ for bacteria and fungi, respectively. Our observations highlight the stability of the indoor airborne bacterial diversity over time, while the corresponding eukaryote community was less stable. Bacterial diversity characterized by pyrosequencing 454 showed high diversity dominated by the Proteobacteria which represented 51.1%, 46.9%, and 38.4% of sequences, for each of the three air samples sequenced. A common bacterial diversity was underlined, corresponding to 58.4% of the sequences. The core species were belonging mostly to the Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, and to the genus Paracoccus spp., Acinetobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., Enhydrobacter sp., Sphingomonas sp., Staphylococcus sp., and Streptococcus sp.

Comments by a Councilman

This article presents results from the first statistically significant study of traffic forecasts in transportation infrastructure projects. The sample used is the largest of its kind, covering 210 projects in 14 nations worth U.S.$59 billion. The study shows with very high statistical significance that forecasters generally do a poor job of estimating the demand for transportation infrastructure projects. For 9 out of 10 rail projects, passenger forecasts are overestimated; the average overestima-tion is 106%. For half of all road projects, the difference between actual and forecasted traffic is more than ±20%. The result is substantial financial risks, which are typically ignored or downplayed by planners and decision makers to the detriment of social and economic welfare. Our data also show that forecasts have not become more accurate over the 30-year period studied, despite claims to the contrary by forecasters. The causes of inaccuracy in forecasts are different for rail and road projects, with political causes playing a larger role for rail than for road. The cure is transparency, accountability, and new forecasting methods. The challenge is to change the governance structures for forecasting and project development. Our article shows how planners may help achieve this.
