This technical paper discusses the implementation of a long-term bridge weigh-in-motion system for use in determining gross vehicle weights of trucks crossing steel girder bridges. The system uses strain data to determine truck weights using an existing structural health monitoring system installed on a interstate highway bridge. The applied system has the advantage of not using any axle detectors in the roadway; and instead all analyses are performed using strain gauges attached directly to the steel girders, providing for a long-term monitoring system with minimal maintenance. Long-term data has been used to demonstrate that this method can be readily applied to gain important information on the quantity and weights of the trucks crossing the highway bridge.  相似文献

We describe a series of 10 patients with malposition of the branch pulmonary arteries (4 patients with crossing [crossed pulmonary arteries] and 6 patients without crossing), 2 of whom had a short main pulmonary artery segment that resulted in iatrogenic right pulmonary artery stenosis after pulmonary artery band placement. Recent concern with national identity has motivated an examination of possible relationships between features of Canadian society and the nature of applied and social Psychology. Experience with the production of a bibliography and book of readings in this area provided the background, necessary for a detailed discussion of the issues. A matrix of research questions was elaborated by crossing some special features of social and cultural life in Canada with the sub-disciplines of Social, Clinical, Educational and Work Psychology. It was concluded that there could be "a Canadian Psychology" in these social and applied areas, but that considerable effort is required before it is attained. Roll crossing can be utilized as a method for profile and flatness control in a rolling mill. The estimation of the profile adjusting range by calculating the elastic roll-gap deflection reveals that roll crossing has a similar effect on the profile as positive bending. Under the assumptions made in the calculations roll crossing is an effective method as profile and crown actuator. Furthermore the effect of roll crossing on the flatness is qualitatively confirmed by rolling trials. Beyond the investigation of the effectiveness of roll crossing as profile and flatness actuator a 3-dimensional finite element simulation of the material flow in the roll gap was done. The results of these simulations, which were confirmed by rolling trials as well, showed that the rolled specimen warps out of the passline due to the crossing of the work rolls whereas the influence of roll crossing on the distribution of local plastomechanical values is negligible. Force components in axial direction are induced by crossing the rolls, which have to be compensated by additional bearings. For the determination of the amount of axial forces rolling trials on a laboratory four-high mill were carried out.  相似文献

In the presence of an internal mammary artery graft crossing the mid-sternal line, a median sternotomy may jeopardize the graft and consequently bring a hemodynamic compromise. We studied retrospectively 22 children who were managed for splenic injuries at Jos University Teaching Hospital between September 1988 and October 1995. Sixteen were males and six were females (M:F = 2.7:1) with their ages between five and 15 years and a mean of 10.3 years. Eleven were knocked down by vehicles while crossing the freeway, playing or hawking goods; seven fell from slippery mango trees after a downpour of rain while two were passengers in a vehicle that was involved in a head-on collision and another two were kicked in the abdomen as a result of assault. All had surgery. Four sustained Uphadhyaya and Simpson's Type 1 injuries while six sustained Type IV injuries. Twelve had total splenectomy, seven had total splenectomy with heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic wafers while three had splenorrhaphy augmented with omentoplasty. An average of 1.5 units of blood per patient were transfused. There was only one death. Considering that the majority (18) of these children sustained their splenic injuries while crossing the freeway (playing or hawking goods) and from falls from mango trees after the rains, we believe that there are preventable causes. Mandatory primary and junior secondary school education as well as legislature against child labour will help keep these children safe out of harm's way and thus drastically reduce the incidence of childhood splenic injuries in our environment.  相似文献

In comparison with pyeloplasty, endourologic procedures for the treatment of ureteropelvic junction obstruction offer good success rates with less morbidity and a shorter hospitalization; however, studies have found lower success rates and increased complications in patients with crossing vessels. Conventional diagnostic angiography and intravenous urography have both been used to identify crossing vessels at the UPJ; but, a reliable, less invasive, less costly, and simpler preoperative procedure to identify crossing vessels is needed. Helical CT with CT angiography is a promising noninvasive technique for the identification of crossing vessels at the ureteropelvic junction, which can be used for surgical planning of endourologic treatment of UPJ obstruction.  相似文献

Nonlinear Analysis of Ordinary Bridges Crossing Fault-Rupture Zones   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rooted in structural dynamics theory, three approximate procedures for estimating seismic demands for bridges crossing fault-rupture zones and deforming into their inelastic range are presented: modal pushover analysis (MPA), linear dynamic analysis, and linear static analysis. These procedures estimate the total seismic demand by superposing peak values of quasi-static and dynamic parts. The peak quasi-static demand in all three procedures is computed by nonlinear static analysis of the bridge subjected to peak values of all support displacements applied simultaneously. In the MPA and the linear dynamic analysis procedures, the peak dynamic demand is estimated by nonlinear static (or pushover) analysis and linear static analysis, respectively, for forces corresponding to the most-dominant mode. In the linear static analysis procedure, the peak dynamic demand is estimated by linear static analysis of the bridge due to lateral forces appropriate for bridges crossing fault-rupture zones. The three approximate procedures are shown to provide estimates of seismic demands that are accurate enough to be useful for practical applications. The linear static analysis procedure, which is much simpler than the other two approximate procedures, is recommended for practical analysis of “ordinary” bridges because it eliminates the need for mode shapes and vibration periods of the bridge.  相似文献

The ability to report the temporal order of 2 tactile stimuli (1 applied to each hand) has been shown to decline when the arms are crossed over compared with when they are uncrossed. However, these effects have only been measured when temporal order was reported by stimulus location. It is unknown whether this spatial manipulation of the body affects all tactile temporal order judgments (TOJs) or only those judgments that are spatially defined. The authors examined the effect of crossing the arms on tactile TOJs when stimuli were identified by either spatial (location) or nonspatial (frequency or duration) attributes. Spatial TOJs were significantly impaired when the arms were in crossed compared with uncrossed postures, but there was no effect of posture when order was judged by nonspatial attributes. Task-dependent modulation of the effects of posture was also evident when response complexity was reduced to go/no-go responses. These results suggest that crossing the arms impairs tactile localization and thus spatial TOJs. However, the data also suggest that localization is not a necessary precursor when temporal order can be computed by nonspatial means. Determining the way in which deleterious mutations interact in their effects on fitness is crucial to numerous areas in population genetics and evolutionary biology. For example, if each additional mutation leads to a greater decrease in log fitness than the last (synergistic epistasis), then the evolution of sex and recombination may be favored to facilitate the elimination of deleterious mutations. However, there is a severe shortage of relevant data. Three relatively simple experimental methods to test for epistasis between deleterious mutations in haploid species have recently been proposed. These methods involve crossing individuals and examining the mean and/or skew in log fitness of the offspring and parents. The main aim of this paper is to formalize these methods, and determine the most effective way in which tests for epistasis could be carried out. We show that only one of these methods is likely to give useful results: crossing individuals that have very different numbers of deleterious mutations, and comparing the mean log fitness of the parents with that of their offspring. We also reconsider experimental data collected on Chlamydomonas moewussi using two of the three methods. Finally, we suggest how the test could be applied to diploid species.  相似文献
