Agriculture is a dynamic activity that causes yearly and seasonal changes in cultivated landscapes. These changes depend on meteorological variations and on the exploitation of annual or perennial crops. Sensor technology including the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) in NOAA satellites constitutes a useful tool to assess changes in cultivated landscapes, as well as to measure crop density and vigour throughout an agricultural cycle. This study analyses relationships among variables, such as precipitation, growth stage and vegetation index values, for crops during the 1996 and 1997 agricultural cycles. The study area was the physiographic province known as ‘Mesa Central’ located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, which, in general, has homogeneous features such as topography and soil type, and a marked precipitation season. Corn and bean are two of the most widely cultivated crops in this region. The methodology used included the following aspects: registering, geometrical correction, calculation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and time-series composites. Additionally, fieldwork assessment was conducted at cultivated areas, where data for daily precipitation, sowing time, crop variety, and duration of vegetative, reproductive and maturity periods were gathered. The correlation analysis between NDVI and precipitation resulted in r=0.9087 and 0.8935 for the analysed regions in 1996 and r=0.8812 and 0.8600 in 1997. The vegetation growth and NDVI also showed a qualitative positive relationship. Therefore these satellite images represent a useful tool in the analysis of crop-related phenological phenomena.  相似文献

In this study, we test whether we can significantly (p < 0.05) distinguish cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fields from maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) fields in smallholder agricultural landscapes of the Mid-Zambezi Valley, Zimbabwe, using a temporal series of 16-day Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer – normalized difference vegetation index (MODIS NDVI) data. We test this hypothesis at different phenological stages over the growing season, that is, early green-up onset, late green-up onset, green-peak, early senescence and late senescence. We also statistically compare the rate of change in the greenness of the three crops at the three phenological stages. Results show that we can significantly (p < 0.05) distinguish cotton fields from maize and sorghum fields using 16-day MODIS NDVI data during the late green-up onset as well as during the green-peak stage of the three crops. Our results indicate that cotton can successfully be distinguished from maize and sorghum in spatially heterogeneous smallholder agricultural landscapes using temporal MODIS NDVI.  相似文献

For thirty years, simple crop water balance models have been used by the early warning community to monitor agricultural drought. These models estimate and accumulate actual crop evapotranspiration, evaluating environmental conditions based on crop water requirements. Unlike seasonal rainfall totals, these models take into account the phenology of the crop, emphasizing conditions during the peak grain filling phase of crop growth. In this paper we describe an analogous metric of crop performance based on time series of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery. A special temporal filter is used to screen for cloud contamination. Regional NDVI time series are then composited for cultivated areas, and adjusted temporally according to the timing of the rainy season. This adjustment standardizes the NDVI response vis-à-vis the expected phenological response of maize. A national time series index is then created by taking the cropped-area weighted average of the regional series. This national time series provides an effective summary of vegetation response in agricultural areas, and allows for the identification of NDVI green-up during grain filling. Onset-adjusted NDVI values following the grain filling period are well correlated with U.S. Department of Agriculture production figures, possess desirable linear characteristics, and perform better than more common indices such as maximum seasonal NDVI or seasonally averaged NDVI. Thus, just as appropriately calibrated crop water balance models can provide more information than seasonal rainfall totals, the appropriate agro-phenological filtering of NDVI can improve the utility and accuracy of space-based agricultural monitoring.  相似文献

Metrics that estimate the beginning of the growing season in semi-arid monsoonal ecosystems have become a central part of both crop models that are used to monitor crop production using satellite remote sensing and early warning indicators of possible future reductions in yield due to growing season length. This paper presents a new phenological model which is tuned to the semi-arid, monsoonal ecosystem of the West African Sahel and that uses humidity instead of calendar dates to identify the beginning of the season. We implement this model on vegetation index data from AVHRR, SPOT-Vegetation and MODIS data, and evaluate the results along with a rainfall-based start of season estimate for the region. Contributions of the paper include evaluating existing methods using ground observations of sowing date, comparing the same metric across multiple sensors and to rainfall-based SOS, and the development of a metric based on NDVI and relative humidity.  相似文献

Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data present an opportunity for acquiring crop information without restrictions caused by weather and illumination conditions, at a spatial resolution appropriate for individual rice fields and a temporal resolution sufficient to capture the growth profiles of different crop species. This study investigated the use of multi-temporal Sentinel-1A SAR data and Landsat-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data to map the spatial distribution of paddy rice fields across parts of the Sanjiang plain, in northeast China. The satellite sensor data were acquired throughout the rice crop-growing season (May–October). A co-registered set of 10 dual polarization (VH/VV) SAR and NDVI images depicting crop phenological development were used as inputs to Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) machine learning classification algorithms in order to map paddy rice fields. The results showed a significant increase in overall classification when the NDVI time-series data were integrated with the various combinations of multi-temporal polarization channels (i.e. VH, VV, and VH/VV). The highest classification accuracies overall (95.2%) and for paddy rice (96.7%) were generated using the RF algorithm applied to combined multi-temporal VH polarization and NDVI data. The SVM classifier was most effective when applied to the dual polarization (i.e. VH and VV) SAR data alone and this generated overall and paddy rice classification accuracies of 91.6% and 82.5%, respectively. The results demonstrate the practicality of implementing RF or SVM machine learning algorithms to produce 10 m spatial resolution maps of paddy rice fields with limited ground data using a combination of multi-temporal SAR and NDVI data, where available, or SAR data alone. The methodological framework developed in this study is apposite for large-scale implementation across China and other major rice-growing regions of the world.  相似文献

The global environmental change research community requires improved and up-to-date land use/land cover (LULC) datasets at regional to global scales to support a variety of science and policy applications. Considerable strides have been made to improve large-area LULC datasets, but little emphasis has been placed on thematically detailed crop mapping, despite the considerable influence of management activities in the cropland sector on various environmental processes and the economy. Time-series MODIS 250 m Vegetation Index (VI) datasets hold considerable promise for large-area crop mapping in an agriculturally intensive region such as the U.S. Central Great Plains, given their global coverage, intermediate spatial resolution, high temporal resolution (16-day composite period), and cost-free status. However, the specific spectral-temporal information contained in these data has yet to be thoroughly explored and their applicability for large-area crop-related LULC classification is relatively unknown. The objective of this research was to investigate the general applicability of the time-series MODIS 250 m Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) datasets for crop-related LULC classification in this region. A combination of graphical and statistical analyses were performed on a 12-month time-series of MODIS EVI and NDVI data from more than 2000 cropped field sites across the U.S. state of Kansas. Both MODIS VI datasets were found to have sufficient spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions to detect unique multi-temporal signatures for each of the region's major crop types (alfalfa, corn, sorghum, soybeans, and winter wheat) and management practices (double crop, fallow, and irrigation). Each crop's multi-temporal VI signature was consistent with its general phenological characteristics and most crop classes were spectrally separable at some point during the growing season. Regional intra-class VI signature variations were found for some crops across Kansas that reflected the state's climate and planting time differences. The multi-temporal EVI and NDVI data tracked similar seasonal responses for all crops and were highly correlated across the growing season. However, differences between EVI and NDVI responses were most pronounced during the senescence phase of the growing season.  相似文献

In monsoon Asia, optical satellite remote sensing for rice paddy phenology suffers from atmospheric contaminations mainly due to frequent cloud cover. We evaluated the quality of satellite remote sensing of paddy phenology: (1) through continuous in situ observations of a paddy field in Japan for 1.5 years, we investigated phenological signals in the reflectance spectrum of the paddy field; (2) we tested daily satellite data taken by Terra/Aqua MODIS (MOD09 and L1B products) with regard to the agreement with the in situ data and the influence of cloud contamination. As a result, the in situ spectral characteristics evidently indicated some phenological changes in the rice paddy field, such as irrigation start, padding, heading, harvest and ploughing. The Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) was the best vegetation index in terms of agreement with the in situ data. More than 65% of MODIS observations were contaminated with clouds in this region. However, the combined use of Terra and Aqua decreased the rate of cloud contamination of the daily data to 43%. In conclusion, the most robust dataset for monitoring rice paddy phenology in monsoon Asia would be daily EVI derived from a combination of Terra/MODIS and Aqua/MODIS.  相似文献

Sonoran Desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) occupy rugged upland areas that experience irregular periods of vegetation growth associated with precipitation events. These episodic and often spatially limited events provide important forage and preformed water resources that may be important drivers of animal movement and habitat use. Habitat-use models that incorporate forage phenology would broaden our understanding of desert bighorn ecology and have considerable potential to inform conservation efforts for the species. Field-based methods are of limited utility to characterize vegetation phenology across large areas. Vegetation indices (VI) derived from satellite imagery are a viable alternative, but may be confounded by areas of high relief and shadow effects that can degrade VI values. The varying spatial and temporal resolutions of readily available satellite sensors, such as the Landsat thematic mapper (TM) and moderate-resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS), present additional challenges. In this study, we sought to minimize degrading effects of terrain on TM- and MODIS-based estimates of vegetation phenology. We compared effects of high topographic relief on time series MODIS- and TM-based VI such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) using VI departures from average (DA) in shaded and unshaded areas. Sun elevation angle negatively impacted TM-derived NDVI and EVI values in areas of steep terrain. In contrast, MODIS-derived NDVI values were insensitive to sun elevation and terrain effects, whereas MODIS-derived EVI was degraded in areas of steep terrain. Time series MODIS NDVI and EVI DA values differed significantly during months of low sun elevation angle. Average MODIS EVI departure values were ≥20% lower than NDVI under these conditions, confounding time series estimates of plant phenology. Our best results were obtained from MODIS 16-day composited NDVI. These remote-sensing-based VI estimates of seasonal plant phenology and productivity can be used to inform models of habitat use and movements of desert bighorn over large areas.  相似文献

Given the close association between climate change and vegetation response, there is a pressing requirement to monitor the phenology of vegetation and understand further how its metrics vary over space and time. This article explores the use of the Envisat MERIS terrestrial chlorophyll index (MTCI) data set for monitoring vegetation phenology, via its estimates of chlorophyll content. The MTCI was used to construct the phenological profile of and extract key phenological event dates from woodland and grass/heath land in Southern England as these represented a range of chlorophyll contents and different phenological cycles. The period 2003–2008 was selected as this was known to be a period with temperature and phenological anomalies. Comparisons of the MTCI-derived phenology data were made with ground indicators and climatic proxy of phenology and with other vegetation indices: MERIS global vegetation index (MGVI), MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI). Close correspondence between MTCI and canopy phenology as indicated by ground observations and climatic proxy was evident. Also observed was a difference between MTCI-derived phenological profile curves and key event dates (e.g. green-up, season length) and those derived from MERIS MGVI, MODIS NDVI and MODIS EVI. The research presented in this article supports the use of the Envisat MTCI for monitoring vegetation phenology, principally due to its sensitivity to canopy chlorophyll content, a vegetation property that is a useful proxy for the canopy physical and chemical alterations associated with phenological change.  相似文献

Multi-temporal vegetation index (VI) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are becoming widely used for large-area crop classification. Most crop-mapping studies have applied enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data from MODIS instead of the more traditional normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data because of atmospheric and background corrections incorporated into EVI's calculation and the index's sensitivity over high biomass areas. However, the actual differences in the classification results using EVI versus NDVI have not been thoroughly explored. This study evaluated time-series MODIS 250-m EVI and NDVI for crop-related land use/land cover (LULC) classification in the US Central Great Plains. EVI- and NDVI-derived maps classifying general crop types, summer crop types and irrigated/non-irrigated crops were produced for southwest Kansas. Qualitative and quantitative assessments were conducted to determine the thematic accuracy of the maps and summarize their classification differences. For the three crop maps, MODIS EVI and NDVI data produced equivalent classification results. High thematic accuracies were achieved with both indices (generally ranging from 85% to 90%) and classified cropping patterns were consistent with those reported for the study area (> 0.95 correlation between the classified and USDA-reported crop areas). Differences in thematic accuracy (< 3% difference), spatially depicted patterns (> 90% pixel-level thematic agreement) and classified crop areas between the series of EVI- and NDVI-derived maps were negligible. Most thematic disagreements were restricted to single pixels or small clumps of pixels in transitional areas between cover types. Analysis of MODIS composite period usage in the classification models also revealed that both VIs performed equally well when periods from a specific growing season phase (green, peak or senescence) were heavily utilized to generate a specific crop map.  相似文献

This study analyses the influence of vegetation structure (i.e. leaf area index and canopy cover) and seasonal background changes on moderate-resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS)-simulated reflectance data in open woodland. Approximately monthly spectral reflectance and transmittance field measurements (May 2011 to October 2013) of cork oak tree leaves (Quercus suber) and of the herbaceous understorey were recorded in the region of Ribatejo, Portugal. The geometric-optical and radiative transfer (GORT) model was used to simulate MODIS response (red, near-infrared) and to calculate vegetation indices, investigating their response to changes in the structure of the overstorey vegetation and to seasonal changes in the understorey using scenarios corresponding to contrasting phenological status (dry season vs. wet season). The performance of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) is discussed. Results showed that SAVI and EVI were very sensitive to the emergence of background vegetation in the wet season compared to NDVI and that shading effects lead to an opposing trend in the vegetation indices. The information provided by this research can be useful to improve our understanding of the temporal dynamic of vegetation, monitored by vegetation indices.  相似文献

This paper presents a methodology capable of combining Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) imagery and ancillary data to estimate durum wheat production in Tuscany (Central Italy). First, the phenological stages of winter wheat are simulated by the use of an agro-meteorological model (Syrius 4.1). Next, MODIS NDVI images at 250 m spatial resolution are utilized to identify fields likely grown with winter wheat. The multitemporal NDVI profiles of these fields are then integrated with Syrius 4.1 outputs through a previously developed procedure in order to simulate wheat above-ground biomass and harvest index. This allows the computation of wheat yield, which, combined with relevant cropped area, provides provincial wheat production estimates. The methodology is tested using ground and MODIS data taken over four Tuscany provinces where winter wheat is widely cultivated. The accuracy of all estimated variables (wheat cropped area, yield and production) is finally evaluated against provincial statistical data. The results of this experiment indicate that the accuracy of wheat cropped area estimation and yield simulation is variable, but interannual production variations are reproduced well for all provinces.  相似文献

Remote sensing provides spatially and temporally continuous measures of forest reflectance, and vegetation indices calculated from satellite data can be useful for monitoring climate change impacts on forest tree phenology. Monitoring of evergreen coniferous forest is more difficult than monitoring of deciduous forest, as the new buds only account for a small proportion of the green biomass, and the shoot elongation process is relatively slow. In this study, we have analyzed data from 186 coniferous monitoring sites in Sweden covering boreal, southern-boreal, and boreo-nemoral conditions. Our objective was to examine the possibility to track seasonal changes in coniferous forests by time-series of MODIS eight-day vegetation indices, testing the coherence between satellite monitored vegetation indices (VI) and temperature dependent phenology. The relationships between two vegetation indices (NDVI and WDRVI) and four phenological indicators (length of snow season, modeled onset of vegetation period, tree cold hardiness level and timing of budburst) were analyzed. The annual curves produced by two curve fitting methods for smoothening of seasonal changes in NDVI and WDRVI were to a large extent characterized by the occurrence of snow, producing stable seasonal oscillations in the northern part and irregular curves with less pronounced annual amplitude in the southern part of the country. Measures based on threshold values of the VI-curves, commonly used for determining the timing of different phenological phases, were not applicable for Swedish coniferous forests. Evergreen vegetation does not have a sharp increase in greenness during spring, and the melting of snow can influence the vegetation indices at the timing of budburst in boreal forests. However, the interannual variation in VI-values for specific eight-day periods was correlated with the phenological indicators. This relation can be used for satellite monitoring of potential climate change impacts on northern coniferous spring phenology.  相似文献

The fraction of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) absorbed by a vegetation canopy is an important variable for global vegetation modelling and is operationally available from data of the Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite sensor starting from the year 2000. Product validation is ongoing and important for constant product improvement, but few studies have investigated the specific accuracy of MODIS FPAR using in situ measurements and none have focused on agricultural areas. This study therefore presents a validation of the collection 5 MODIS FPAR product in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape in western Uzbekistan. High-resolution FPAR maps were compiled via linear regression between in situ FPAR measurements and the RapidEye normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for the 2009 season. The data were aggregated to the MODIS scale for comparison. Data on the percentage cover of agricultural crops per MODIS pixel allowed investigation of the impact of spatial heterogeneity on MODIS FPAR accuracy. Overall, the collection 5 MODIS FPAR overestimated RapidEye FPAR between approximately 6% and 15%. MODIS quality flags, the underlying biome classification and spatial heterogeneity were investigated as potential sources of error. MODIS data quality was very good in all cases. A comparison of the MODIS land-cover product with high-resolution land-use classification revealed a significant misclassification by MODIS. Yet, we found that the overestimation of MODIS FPAR is independent of classification accuracy. The results indicate that the amount of background information, present even in the most homogeneous pixels (~70% crop cover), is most likely the reason for the overestimation. The behaviour of pure pixels could not be investigated due to a lack of appropriate pixels.  相似文献

Cross-scalar satellite phenology from ground, Landsat, and MODIS data   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Phenological records constructed from global mapping satellite platforms (e.g. AVHRR and MODIS) hold the potential to be valuable tools for monitoring vegetation response to global climate change. However, most satellite phenology products are not validated, and field checking coarse scale (≥ 500 m) data with confidence is a difficult endeavor. In this research, we compare phenology from Landsat (field scale, 30 m) to MODIS (500 m), and compare datasets derived from each instrument. Landsat and MODIS yield similar estimates of the start of greenness (r2 = 0.60), although we find that a high degree of spatial phenological variability within coarser-scale MODIS pixels may be the cause of the remaining uncertainty. In addition, spatial variability is smoothed in MODIS, a potential source of error when comparing in situ or climate data to satellite phenology. We show that our method for deriving phenology from satellite data generates spatially coherent interannual phenology departures in MODIS data. We test these estimates from 2000 to 2005 against long-term records from Harvard Forest (Massachusetts) and Hubbard Brook (New Hampshire) Experimental Forests. MODIS successfully predicts 86% of the variance at Harvard forest and 70% of the variance at Hubbard Brook; the more extreme topography of the later is inferred to be a significant source of error. In both analyses, the satellite estimate is significantly dampened from the ground-based observations, suggesting systematic error (slopes of 0.56 and 0.63, respectively). The satellite data effectively estimates interannual phenology at two relatively simple deciduous forest sites and is internally consistent, even with changing spatial scale. We propose that continued analyses of interannual phenology will be an effective tool for monitoring native forest responses to global-scale climate variability.  相似文献

Much effort has been made in recent years to improve the spectral and spatial resolution of satellite sensors to develop improved vegetation indices reflecting surface conditions. In this study satellite vegetation indices from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) are evaluated against two years of in situ measurements of vegetation indices in Senegal. The in situ measurements are obtained using four masts equipped with self‐registrating multispectral radiometers designed for the same wavelengths as the satellite sensor channels. In situ measurements of the MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and AVHRR NDVI are equally sensitive to vegetation; however, the MODIS NDVI is consistently higher than the AVHRR NDVI. The MODIS Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) proved more sensitive to dense vegetation than both AVHRR NDVI and MODIS NDVI. EVI and NDVI based on the MODIS 16‐day constrained view angle maximum value composite (CV‐MVC) product captured the seasonal dynamics of the field observations satisfactorily but a standard 16‐day MVC product estimated from the daily MODIS surface reflectance data without view angle constraints yielded higher correlations between the satellite indices and field measurements (R 2 values ranging from 0.74 to 0.98). The standard MVC regressions furthermore approach a 1?:?1 line with in situ measured values compared to the CV‐MVC regressions. The 16‐day MVC AVHRR data did not satisfactorily reflect the variation in the in situ data. Seasonal variation in the in situ measurements is captured reasonably with R 2 values of 0.75 in 2001 and 0.64 in 2002, but the dynamic range of the AVHRR satellite data is very low—about a third to a half of the values from in situ measurements. Consequently the in situ vegetation indices were emulated much better by the MODIS indices than by the AVHRR NDVI.  相似文献

Boreal forests in the northern hemisphere provide important sinks for storing carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the size and distribution of these sinks remain uncertain. In particular, many remote-sensing models show a strong bias in the simulation of carbon fluxes for evergreen needleleaf forest. The objective of this study is to improve these predictive models for accurately quantifying temporal changes in the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of conifer-dominated forest solely based on satellite remote sensing, including the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daytime land-surface temperature (LST), night-time LST′, enhanced vegetation index (EVI), land–surface water index (LSWI), fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), and leaf area index (LAI). Considering that the component fluxes, gross primary production (GPP), and ecosystem respiration (Re), are strongly influenced by vegetation phenology, seasonality information was extracted from time-series MODIS EVI data based on non-linear least-squares fits of asymmetric Gaussian model functions with a software package for analysing the time-series of satellite sensor data (TIMESAT). The results indicated that models directly incorporating phenological information failed to improve their performance for temperate deciduous forest. Instead, three methods to retrieve the component fluxes – GPP and Re – including direct estimates, models incorporating the phenological information, and models developed based on the threshold value (LST 273 K), were explored respectively. All methods improved NEE estimates markedly and models developed based on the threshold value performed best, and provided a future framework for accurate remote sensing of NEE in evergreen forest.  相似文献

Current models of vegetation dynamics using the normalized vegetation index (NDVI) time series perform poorly for high-latitude environments. This is due partly to specific attributes of these environments, such as short growing season, long periods of darkness in winter, persistence of snow cover, and dominance of evergreen species, but also to the design of the models. We present a new method for monitoring vegetation activity at high latitudes, using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI. It estimates the NDVI of the vegetation during winter and applies a double logistic function, which is uniquely defined by six parameters that describe the yearly NDVI time series. Using NDVI data from 2000 to 2004, we illustrate the performance of this method for an area in northern Scandinavia (35 × 162 km2, 68° N 23° E) and compare it to existing methods based on Fourier series and asymmetric Gaussian functions. The double logistic functions describe the NDVI data better than both the Fourier series and the asymmetric Gaussian functions, as quantified by the root mean square errors. Compared with the method based on Fourier series, the new method does not overestimate the duration of the growing season. In addition, it handles outliers effectively and estimates parameters that are related to phenological events, such as the timing of spring and autumn. This makes the method most suitable for both estimating biophysical parameters and monitoring vegetation phenology.  相似文献

The objective of this article is to develop and test a methodology capable of using medium spatial resolution satellite imagery to improve forest-area statistics derived from ground sampling. The methodology builds on the evidence that multitemporal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images bring significant information on the spatial distribution of forest surfaces. Consequently, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) NDVI images are potentially useful to improve forest-area assessment based on ground data. This expectation is verified in Tuscany (central Italy) using forest-area references extracted from the Coordination of Information on Environment (CORINE) land-cover map. The accuracy of forest-area statistics obtained at province level by different reference samplings is first assessed. Next, locally calibrated regression analyses are applied to multitemporal MODIS NDVI images in order to obtain per-pixel forest-area estimates. Two statistical methods (the direct expansion and the regression estimator) are finally used to combine these estimates with the ground data and produce corrected per-province statistics. The experimental results confirm that MODIS NDVI data contain relevant information on forest distribution, which can be efficiently extended over the land surface by locally calibrated regressions. The obtained estimates can be combined with the ground data for enhancing forest-area assessment at province level. To this aim, the regression estimator gives the best performance for all sampling densities of the reference data.  相似文献
