Cellulose and abaca fibre reinforced polyoxymethylene (POM) composites were fabricated using an extrusion coating (double screw) compounding followed by injection moulding. The long cellulose or abaca fibres were dried online with an infrared dryer and impregnated fibre in matrix material by using a special extrusion die. The fibre loading in composites was 30 wt.%. The tensile properties, flexural properties, Charpy impact strength, falling weight impact strength, heat deflection temperature and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated for those composites. The fibre pull-outs, fibre matrix adhesion and cracks in composites were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the tensile strength of composites was found to reduce by 18% for abaca fibre and increase by 90% for cellulose fibre in comparison to control POM. The flexural strength of composites was found to increase by 39% for abaca fibre and by 144% for cellulose fibre. Due to addition of abaca or cellulose fibre both modulus properties were found to increase 2-fold. The notched Charpy impact strength of cellulose fibre composites was 6-fold higher than that of control POM. The maximum impact resistance force was shorted out for cellulose fibre composites. The heat deflection temperature of abaca and cellulose fibre composites was observed to be 50 °C and 63 °C higher than for control POM respectively.  相似文献

In the study, fracture behaviour of short bamboo fibre reinforced polyester composites is investigated. The matrix is reinforced with fibres ranging from 10 to 50, 30 to 50 and 30 to 60 vol.% at increments of 10 vol.% for bamboo fibres at 4, 7 and 10 mm lengths respectively. The results reveal that at 4 mm of fibre length, the increment in fibre content deteriorates the fracture toughness. As for 7 and 10 mm fibre lengths, positive effect of fibre reinforcement is observed. The optimum fibre content is found to be at 40 vol.% for 7 mm fibre and 50 vol.% for 10 mm fibre. The highest fracture toughness is achieved at 10 mm/50 vol.% fibre reinforced composite, with 340% of improvement compared to neat polyester. Fractured surfaces investigated through the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) describing different failure mechanisms are also reported.  相似文献

The creep behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particulates in various combinations has been investigated in the transverse direction, i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation was perpendicular to the loading direction, in the temperature range of 175–300 °C at the stress levels ranging from 60 to 140 MPa using impression creep test technique. Normal creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate decreasing with strain and then reaching a steady state, is observed at 175 °C at all the stresses employed, and up to 80 MPa stress at 240 °C. A reverse creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate increasing with strain, then reaching a steady state and then decreasing, is observed above 80 MPa stress at 240 °C and at all the stress levels at 300 °C. This pattern remains the same for all the composites employed. The reverse creep behaviour is found to be associated with fibre breakage. The apparent stress exponent is found to be very high for all the composites. However, after taking the threshold stress into account, the true stress exponent is found to range between 4 and 7, which suggests viscous glide and dislocation climb being the dominant creep mechanisms. The apparent activation energy Qc was not calculated due to insufficient data at any stress level either for normal or reverse creep behaviour. The creep resistance of the hybrid composites is found to be comparable to that of the composite reinforced with 20% Saffil short fibres alone at all the temperatures and stress levels investigated. The creep rate of the composites in the transverse direction is found to be higher than the creep rate in the longitudinal direction reported in a previous paper.  相似文献

The main objective of this research was to study the potential of grain by-product such as barley husk, coconut shell as reinforcements for thermoplastic as an alternative or together with wood fibres. Thermal degradation characteristics of those fibres were studied to investigate the feasibility of these fibres to the processing point of view. The particle morphology and particle size was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Water absorption properties of the fibres were studied to evaluate the viability of these fibres as reinforcements. The chemical composition and surface chemistry of those fibres were also determined to evaluate its importance in determining the end-use properties of composites. Polypropylene composites were fabricated using a high speed mixer followed by injection moulding with 40 wt.% of fibre load. Tensile and Charpy impact strength of resulting composites were investigated.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) silicon carbide (SiC) matrix composites reinforced with KD-I SiC fibres were fabricated by precursor impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP) process. The fibre-matrix interfaces were tailored by pre-coating the as-received KD-I SiC fibres with PyC layers of different thicknesses or a layer of SiC. Interfacial characteristics and their effects on the composite mechanical properties were evaluated. The results indicate that the composite reinforced with as-received fibre possessed an interfacial shear strength of 72.1 MPa while the composite reinforced with SiC layer coated fibres had a much higher interfacial shear strength of 135.2 MPa. However, both composites showed inferior flexural strength and fracture toughness. With optimised PyC coating thickness, the interface coating led to much improved mechanical properties, i.e. a flexural strength of 420.6 MPa was achieved when the interlayer thickness is 0.1 μm, and a fracture toughness of 23.1 MPa m1/2 was obtained for the interlayer thickness of 0.53 μm. In addition, the composites prepared by the PIP process exhibited superior mechanical properties over the composites prepared by the chemical vapour infiltration and vapour silicon infiltration (CVI-VSI) process.  相似文献

Abaca fibre reinforced PP composites were prepared using a high speed mixer followed by injection moulding with 30 wt.% of fibre load. Prior to composite production, the fibres were modified by fungamix and natural enzyme. The effects of modification of the fibre were assessed on the basis of morphology and thermal resistance and as well as on mechanical, thermal and environmental stress corrosion resistance properties of the resulting composites. Coupling agent (MA-PP) was also used with unmodified abaca fibre to observe the coupling agent effect on resulting composites properties. The moisture absorption of the composites was found to be reduced 20–45% due to modification. Tensile strength found to be 5–45% and flexural strengths found to be 10–35% increased due to modification. Modified fibre composites found to better resistance in acid and base medium.  相似文献

The dynamic mechanical and thermal analysis of oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB)/woven jute fibre (Jw) reinforced epoxy hybrid composites were carried out. The storage modulus (E′) was found to decrease with temperature in all cases, and hybrid composites had showed better values of E′ at glass transition temperature (Tg) compared to EFB and epoxy. Loss modulus showed shifts in the Tg of the polymer matrix with the addition of fibre as reinforcing phase, which indicate that fibre plays an important role in case of Tg. The Tan δ peak height was minimum for jute composites and maximum for epoxy matrix. Complex modulus variations and phase behaviour of the hybrid composites was studied by Cole-Cole analysis. Thermal analysis result indicates an increase in thermal stability of EFB composite with the incorporation of woven jute fibres. Hybridization of EFB composite with Jw fibres enhanced the dynamic mechanical and thermal properties.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of current research on the fatigue life prediction of carbon/epoxy laminate composites involving twelve balanced woven bidirectional layers of carbon fibres and epoxy resin manufactured by a vacuum moulding method. The plates were produced with 3 mm thickness and 0.66 fibre weight fraction. The dog bone shape specimens were cut from these plates with the load line aligned with one of the fibre directions. The fatigue tests were performed using load control with a frequency of 10 Hz and at room temperature. The fatigue behaviour was studied for different stress ratios and for variable amplitude block loadings. The damage process was monitored in terms of the stiffness loss. The fatigue life of specimens submitted to block loading tests was modelled using Palmgren–Miner’s law and taking in to account the stress ratio effect. The estimated and experimental fatigue lives were compared and good agreement was observed.  相似文献

Comingled carbon fibre (CF)/polypropylene (PP) yarns were produced from chopped recycled carbon fibres (reCF) (20 mm in length, 7-8 μm diameter) blended with matrix polypropylene staple fibres (60 mm in length, 28 μm diameter) using a modified carding and wrap spinning process. Microscopic analysis showed that more than 90% of the reCF were aligned along the yarn axis. Thermoplastic composite test specimens fabricated from the wrap-spun yarns had 15-27.7% reCF volume content. Similar to the yarn, greater than 90% of the reCF comprising each composite sample made, showed a parallel alignment with the axis of the test specimens. The average values obtained for tensile, and flexural strengths were 160 MPa and 154 MPa, respectively for composite specimens containing 27.7% reCF by volume. It was concluded that with such mechanical properties, thermoplastic composites made from recycled CF could be used as low cost materials for many non-structural applications.  相似文献

Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) ceramic fibres with the nominal composition of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 have been fabricated by a modified sol-gel method. Due to the difficulty of dissolving the magnesium component, the mixed oxide method was used together with the traditional sol-gel method. To obtain crack-free fibres, pyrolysis was carried out at a very slow heating rate under specific atmosphere to control the organic burnout. The thermal and microstructural properties were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The optimum sintering temperature is 1200 °C and yields a fibre with a final diameter of around 100 μm. A single PMN-PT fibre has been poled and its electrical properties were measured. The properties of the fibre are found to be better than that of a ceramic disc.  相似文献

Growth of carbon nanotubes (CNT) or carbon nano-fibres (CNF) on carbon fibrous substrates is a way to increase the fracture toughness of fibre reinforced composites (FRC), with encouraging results reported in the recent years. If these nano-engineered FRC (nFRC) are destined to leave laboratories and enter industrial-scale production, a question of adapting the existing composite manufacturing methods will arise. The paper studies compressibility of woven carbon fibre performs (two types of fabrics) with CNT/CNF grown on the fibres using the CVD method. The results include pressure vs thickness and pressure vs fibre volume fraction diagrams for one and four layers of the fabric. Morphology of the nFRC is studied with SEM. It is shown that the pressure needed to achieve the target fibre volume fraction of the preform increases drastically (for example, from 0.05 MPa to more than 0.5 MPa for a fibre volume fraction of 52%) when CNT/CNF are grown on it. No change in nesting of the fabric plies is noticed. The poor compressibility can lower the achievable fibre volume fraction in composite for economical vacuum assisted light-RTM techniques and increase the pressure requirements in autoclave processing.  相似文献

The main aim of this paper is to develop kenaf-glass (KG) fibres reinforced unsaturated polyester hybrid composite on a source of green composite using sheet moulding compound process. Unsaturated polyester resin (UPE) and KG fibres in mat form were used at a ratio of 70:30 (by volume) with treated and untreated kenaf fibre. The kenaf fibre was treated with 6% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) diluted solution for 3 h using mercerization method. The hybrid composites were tested for flexural, tensile and Izod impact strength using ASTM D790-03, ASTM D618 and ASTM D256-04 standards respectively. The highest flexural, tensile and impact strength were obtained from treated kenaf with 15/15 v/v KG fibres reinforced UPE hybrid composite in this investigation.Scanning electron microscopy fractography showed fibre cracking, debonding and fibre pulled-out as the main fracture mode of composites and kenaf treated 15/15 v/v KG reinforced hybrid composite exhibited better interfacial bonding between the matrix and reinforcement compared to other combinations.  相似文献

This study is aimed at exploring the possibility of improving the interfacial adhesion strength of betelnut fibres using different chemical treatments namely 4% and 6% of HCl and NaOH respectively. The fibre specimens were partially embedded into different thermosetting polymer matrix (polyester and epoxy) as reinforcement blocks. Single fibre pullout tests were carried out for both the untreated (Ut) and treated betelnut fibres with different resins and tested under dry conditions. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the material failure morphology. The studies revealed the differences of interfacial adhesion strengths for the various test specimens of betelnut fibres treated with the polyester and epoxy matrix which followed in the order of: N6 ? N4 > H4 > Ut > H6. It was proven that fibres treated with 6% of NaOH exhibits excellent interfacial adhesion properties. The interfacial adhesion shear strength of these fibres using polyester and epoxy has improved by 141% and 115% correspondingly compared to untreated fibre under the same treatment.  相似文献

The paper presents results on dynamic mechanical properties of jute, and kenaf fibre reinforced composites at various strain rates using compression Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar technique. The stress–strain curves for both pultruded natural fibre reinforced composites at strain rates of nearly 1400 s−1 are illustrated and then compared with statically determines stress–strain curve (1.0 × 10−3 s−1). Results show that the strain rate does affect the value of dynamic compressive properties of both pultruded natural fibre composites. Higher dynamic compression modulus and 2.5% flow stress were recorded for higher strain rates as compared to lower strain rate over the range of strain rates investigated. Under dynamic loading, jute fibre reinforced composites recorded the highest value of dynamic response in terms of compression modulus, 2.5% flow stress and compressive strength than that of kenaf fibre reinforced composites. In addition, kenaf fibre reinforced composites is more severely damaged as compared to jute fibre reinforced composites for all tested strain rate.  相似文献

A model is presented for prediction of the fracture energy of ceramic-matrix composites containing dispersed metallic fibres. It is assumed that the work of fracture comes entirely from pull-out and/or plastic deformation of fibres bridging the crack plane. Comparisons are presented between these predictions and experimental measurements made on a commercially-available composite material of this type, containing stainless steel (304) fibres in a matrix predominantly comprising alumina and alumino-silicate phases. Good agreement is observed, and it’s noted that there is scope for the fracture energy levels to be high (∼20 kJ m−2). Higher toughness levels are both predicted and observed for coarser fibres, up to a practical limit for the fibre diameter of the order of 0.5 mm. Other deductions are also made concerning strategies for optimisation of the toughness of this type of material.  相似文献

Aiming at developing carbon fibre/polyamide-12 (CF/PA) composite powders for manufacturing high-performance components by selective laser sintering (SLS), the preparation, characteristics and sintering process of the composite powders and mechanical properties of sintered components were studied. Surfaces of the carbon fibres were treated by the oxidation modification and coated with polyamide-12 through the dissolution-precipitation process to provide good interfacial adhesion and homogenous dispersion within the polyamide-12 matrix. The particle size and micro-morphology analyses show that the CF/PA composite powders with 30 wt%, 40 wt% and 50 wt% carbon fibres present the suitable powder sizes and format for SLS. The incorporation of carbon fibres into the polyamide-12 matrix decreases the initial melting temperature and consequently lowers the SLS part bed temperatures, implying lower energy requirement and less thermal degradation in the sintering process. The CF/PA composites also represent higher thermal stability than the pure polyamide-12. The CF/PA sintered components with 30 wt%, 40 wt% and 50 wt% carbon fibres exhibit the greatly enhanced flexural strengths by 44.5%, 83.3%, 114%, and the flexural modulus by 93.4%, 129.4%, 243.4%, respectively, as compared with the pure polyamide-12 sintered parts. Fractured surface analysis shows that the carbon fibres are encapsulated and bonded well with the polyamide matrix. The complex SLS parts with the thinnest wall of 0.6 mm, the density of 1.09 ± 0.02 g/cm3 and the relatively density of 94.13 ± 1.72% were manufactured using the CF/PA composite powder with 30 wt% carbon fibres. This study demonstrates that the CF/PA composite powders prepared by the surface treatment and dissolution-precipitation method represent suitable interfacial adhesion, filler dispersion, particle sizes and sintering behaviours for SLS and enable the manufacture of complex components with high performance.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to improve the interlaminar shear strength of composites by mixing epoxy resin and modifying carbon fibres. The effect of mixed resin matrix’s structure on carbon fibres composites was studied. Anodic oxidation treatment was used to modify the surface of carbon fibres. The tensile strength of multifilament and interlaminar shear strength of composites were investigated respectively. The morphologies of untreated and treated carbon fibres were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Surface analysis indicates that the amount of carbon fibres chemisorbed oxygen-containing groups, active carbon atom, the surface roughness, and wetting ability increases after treatment. The tensile strength of carbon fibres decreased little after treatment by anodic oxidation. The results show that the treated carbon fibres composites could possess excellent interfacial properties with mixed resins, and interlaminar shear strength of the composites is up to 85.41 MPa. The mechanism of mixed resins and treated carbon fibres to improve the interfacial property of composites is obtained.  相似文献

This study presents a comparison of the effect of various wood fibre types in polylactic acid and polypropylene composites produced by melt processing. The study also reveals the reinforcing effect of pelletised wood fibres compared to conventionally used wood flour or refined fibres. Composites containing 30 wt.% of chemical pulps, thermomechanical pulp and wood flour were produced by compounding and injection moulding. Fibre morphologies were analysed before and after melt processing. The dispersion of the fibres and mechanical performance of the composites were also investigated. Fibre length was reduced during melt processing steps, reduction being higher with longer fibres. Wood fibres provided clearly higher plastic reinforcement than wood flour. Comparing the wood fibre types, TMP fibres provided the highest improvement in mechanical properties in polylactic acid composites with uniform fibre dispersion. In polypropylene composites, fibre selection is not as crucial.  相似文献

We employ terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS), a novel, non-destructive testing method, to study the fibre orientation and fibre content in reinforced plastics. The birefringent properties of plastics filled with differing amounts of short glass fibres are measured at frequencies from 100 GHz up to 1 THz. To predict the permittivity of the experimentally examined composite materials, we use an effective medium theory first introduced by Polder and van Santen. On the basis of the measured data and this model, we deduce the additive content ξ, the preferential orientation of the fibres φ and the fraction of orientated fibres a. Our findings agree well with corresponding mold flow simulations performed with commercially available software.  相似文献

All-hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) cellulose composites were prepared by a mechanical blending technique followed by hot pressing and water–ethanol regeneration. The alkali treated fibres were ground and sieved to a size ranging from 45 μm to 500 μm. Introduction of fibres into 12% w/v cellulose N-methyl-morpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) solution was performed with low solution viscosity at 100 °C. The solid mixtures were cut and heat pressed between heated glass and PTFE plates at 85 °C to obtain a flat smooth-surfaced composite sheet of approximately 0.2 mm thickness. The cellulose was regenerated in a 50:50 water–ethanol mixture that subsequently removed NMMO and stabilizer (Irganox 1010, Ciba) from the composite. FTIR and X-ray diffraction measurements were performed to investigate the structural change of cellulose from fibre into partially regenerated composite. Composition and thermal stability of composites were investigated using thermogravimetry. A broadening of the scattering of the main crystalline plane (0 0 2) and a depression of the maximum degradation temperature of fibre were observed. The observations revealed a structural change in the fibres. The mechanical properties of composites depended on size, surface area, crystallinity and the structural swelling of fibres.  相似文献
