In this paper, we present an improved discrete element method based on the non‐smooth contact dynamics and the bi‐potential concept. The energy dissipated during the collisions is taken into account by means of restitution coefficients. The interaction between particles is modelled by Coulomb unilateral contact law with dry friction which is typically non‐associated: during the contact, the sliding vector is not normal to the friction cone. The main feature of our algorithm is to overcome this difficulty by means of the bi‐potential theory. It leads to an easy implement predictor–corrector scheme involving just an orthogonal projection onto the friction cone. Moreover the convergence test is based on an error estimator in constitutive law using the corner stone inequality of the bipotential. Then we present numerical simulations which show the robustness of our algorithm and the various possibilities of the software ‘MULTICOR’ developed with this approach. An adhesive elasto-plastic contact model for the discrete element method with three dimensional non-spherical particles is proposed and investigated to achieve quantitative prediction of cohesive powder flowability. Simulations have been performed for uniaxial consolidation followed by unconfined compression to failure using this model. The model has been shown to be capable of predicting the experimental flow function (unconfined compressive strength vs. the prior consolidation stress) for a limestone powder which has been selected as a reference solid in the Europe wide PARDEM research network. Contact plasticity in the model is shown to affect the flowability significantly and is thus essential for producing satisfactory computations of the behaviour of a cohesive granular material. The model predicts a linear relationship between a normalized unconfined compressive strength and the product of coordination number and solid fraction. This linear relationship is in line with the Rumpf model for the tensile strength of particulate agglomerate. Even when the contact adhesion is forced to remain constant, the increasing unconfined strength arising from stress consolidation is still predicted, which has its origin in the contact plasticity leading to microstructural evolution of the coordination number. The filled porosity is predicted to increase as the contact adhesion increases. Under confined compression, the porosity reduces more gradually for the load-dependent adhesion compared to constant adhesion. It was found that the contribution of adhesive force to the limiting friction has a significant effect on the bulk unconfined strength. The results provide new insights and propose a micromechanical based measure for characterising the strength and flowability of cohesive granular materials.  相似文献

This paper attempts to numerically validate the concept of diffuse failure using a discrete element method. First, the theoretical background is reviewed, and it is shown how the kinetic energy of a system, initially at rest after a loading history, is likely to abruptly increase under the effect of disturbances. The vanishing of the second-order work thus constitutes a basic ingredient, related to both the pioneering work of Hill (J Mech Phys Solids (6):236–249, 1958) and the notion of bifurcation applied to geomechanics (Vardoulakis and Sulem in Bifurcation analysis in geomechanics, Chapman & Hall Publisher, London, 1995). Discrete numerical simulations were performed on homogeneous three-dimensional specimens, and the three basic conditions that must be satisfied in order to observe a failure mechanism are numerically checked. Finally, this work illustrates the phenomena that are likely to affect in situ slopes, for instance, when the loading (due to weather conditions or human activities) meets the three basic conditions for a failure mechanism to develop.  相似文献

This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of inherently-anisotropic granular materials from macroscopic and microscopic points of view. The study is achieved by simulating biaxial compression tests performed on granular assemblies by using numerical discrete element method. In the same category of numerical studies found in the literature, the simulations were performed by considering elliptical/oval particles. In the present study, however, the shape of particles is considered as convex polygons, which mostly resembles real sand grains. Particle assemblies with four different bedding angles were tested. Similar to what observed in experiment, inherent anisotropy has a significant effect on macroscopic mechanical behavior of granular materials. The shear strength and dilative behavior of assemblies were found to decrease as the bedding angle increases. Evolution of the microstructure of all samples and the influence of bedding angle on the fabric and force anisotropy during loading process were investigated. It is seen that the microscopic evolutions in the fabric can justify well the macroscopic behavior of granular assemblies. It is found that the long axis of particles tend to be inclined perpendicular to the loading axis, which results in generating more stable column-like microstructures in order to transfer the applied load. Moreover, the number of contacts as well as the magnitude of forces among particles varies in different directions during the loading process and the initial anisotropy condition totally evolves due to the induced anisotropy within samples.  相似文献

The viscoelastic behaviour of a biological material is central to its functioning and is an indicator of its health. The Fung quasi-linear viscoelastic (QLV) model, a standard tool for characterizing biological materials, provides excellent fits to most stress–relaxation data by imposing a simple form upon a material''s temporal relaxation spectrum. However, model identification is challenging because the Fung QLV model''s ‘box’-shaped relaxation spectrum, predominant in biomechanics applications, can provide an excellent fit even when it is not a reasonable representation of a material''s relaxation spectrum. Here, we present a robust and simple discrete approach for identifying a material''s temporal relaxation spectrum from stress–relaxation data in an unbiased way. Our ‘discrete QLV’ (DQLV) approach identifies ranges of time constants over which the Fung QLV model''s typical box spectrum provides an accurate representation of a particular material''s temporal relaxation spectrum, and is effective at providing a fit to this model. The DQLV spectrum also reveals when other forms or discrete time constants are more suitable than a box spectrum. After validating the approach against idealized and noisy data, we applied the methods to analyse medial collateral ligament stress–relaxation data and identify the strengths and weaknesses of an optimal Fung QLV fit.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the complex problem of how to simulate particle contacts, taking into account the cohesion effect. In accordance with the molecular dynamics models, we propose a novel expression for the repulsive force which controls dynamically the transfer and dissipation of energy in granular media. This expression is formulated under fractional calculus, where a fractional derivative accumulates the whole history of the virtual overlap over time in weighted form. We then discuss and illustrate the basic properties of the repulsive force in a normal direction to the contacting surfaces. This approach allows us to perform simulations of arbitrary multiparticle contacts as well as granular cohesion dynamics.  相似文献

Based on the discrete particle model for solid-phase deformation of granular materials consisting of dry particulate assemblages, a discrete particle–continuum model for modelling the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour in saturated granular materials is developed. The motion of the interstitial fluid is described by two parallel continuum schemes governed by the averaged incompressible N–S equations and Darcy's law, respectively, where the latter one can be regarded as a degraded case of the former. Owing to the merits in both Lagrangian and mesh-free characters, the characteristic-based smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is proposed in this paper for modelling pore fluid flows relative to the deformed solid phase that is modelled as packed assemblages of interacting discrete particles. It is assumed that the formulation is Lagrangian with the co-ordinate system transferring with the movement of the solid particles. The assumed continuous fluid field is discretized into a finite set of Lagrangian (material) points with their number equal to that of solid particles situated in the computational domain. An explicit meshless scheme for granular materials with interstitial water is formulated. Numerical results illustrate the capability and performance of the present model in modelling the fluid–solid interaction and deformation in granular materials saturated with water. The small-strain (elastic) shear stiffness of soil is an important parameter in geotechnics. It is required as an input parameter to predict deformations and to carry out site response analysis to predict levels of shaking during earthquakes. Bender element testing is often used in experimental soil mechanics to determine the shear (S-) wave velocity in a given soil and hence the shear stiffness. In a bender element test a small perturbation is input at a point source and the propagation of the perturbation through the system is measured at a single measurement point. The mechanics and dynamics of the system response are non-trivial, complicating interpretation of the measured signal. This paper presents the results of a series of discrete element method (DEM) simulations of bender element tests on a simple, idealised granular material. DEM simulations provide the opportunity to study the mechanics of this testing approach in detail. The DEM model is shown to be capable of capturing features of the system response that had previously been identified in continuum-type analyses of the system. The propagation of the wave through the sample can be monitored at the particle-scale in the DEM simulation. In particular, the particle velocity data indicated the migration of a central S-wave accompanied by P-waves moving along the sides of the sample. The elastic stiffness of the system was compared with the stiffness calculated using different approaches to interpreting bender element test data. An approach based upon direct decomposition of the signal using a fast-Fourier transform yielded the most accurate results.  相似文献

Effective properties of cemented granular materials   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
An analytical model is developed to describe the effective elastic properties of a cemented granular material that is modeled as a random packing of identical spheres. The elastic moduli of grains may differ from those of cement. The effective bulk and shear moduli of the packing are calculated from geometrical parameters (the average number of contacts per sphere and porosity), and from the normal and tangential stiffnesses of a two-grain combination. The latter are found by solving the problems of normal and tangential deformation of two elastic spherical grains cemented at their contact. A thin cement layer is approximated by an elastic foundation, and the grain-cement interaction problems are reduced to linear integral equations. The solution reveals a peculiar distribution pattern of normal and shear stresses at the cemented grain contacts: the stresses are maximum at the center of the contact region when the cement is soft relative to the grain, and are maximum at the periphery of the contact region when the cement is stiff. Stress distribution shape gradually varies between these two extremes as the cement's stiffness increases. The solution shows that it is mainly the amount of cement that influences the effective elastic properties of cemented granular materials. The radius of the cement layer affects the stiffness of a granular assembly much more strongly than the stiffness of the cement does. This theoretical model is supported by experimental results.  相似文献

In this paper a discrete element matrix formulation for the analysis of linear and non-linear bifurcation problems of some elastic structures is introduced. This, combined with a discrete perturbation technique, is implemented into a computer code to solve buckling and initial postbuckling problems of elastic struts.  相似文献

The discrete element method (DEM) is adopted to simulate the triaxial tests of granular materials in this study. In the DEM simulations, two different membrane-forming methods are used to generate triaxial samples. One method is to pack the internal particles first, then to generate the enclosed membrane; the other is to generate the internal particles and the enclosed membrane together. A definition of the effective strain, which combines microscopic numerical results with macroscopic expression in three-dimensional space, is presented to describe the macroscopic deformation process of granular materials. With these two membrane generation methods, the effective strain distributions in longitudinal section and transverse section of the triaxial sample are described to investigate the progressive failure and the evolution of the shear bands in granular materials. Two typical shear band failure modes in triaxial tests are observed in the DEM simulations with different membrane-forming methods. One is a single shear band like a scraper bowl, and the other is an axial symmetric shear band like two hoppers stacking as the shape of rotational “X” in triaxial sample. The characteristics of the shear bands during the failure processes are discussed in detail based on the DEM simulations.  相似文献

Writing the stress as a sum over contact forces allows one to partition stress increments according to their microscopic, grain-level causes. We present two ways of doing this: the first way differentiates between normal and tangential contact forces, while the second ascribes different parts of a change in stress to different physical processes such as contact network anisotropy, non-affine motions and sliding contacts. These two partitioning methods can be combined. We then use them to analyze simulations of failure in biaxial tests, leading to several results. We show that the granular material becomes effectively frictionless well before failure. In addition, by partitioning the second order work, one can attribute a part of the destabilization to each of the various physical processes mentioned above.  相似文献

The smooth and nonsmooth approaches to the discrete element method (DEM) are examined from a computational perspective. The main difference can be understood as using explicit versus implicit time integration. A formula is obtained for estimating the computational effort depending on error tolerance, system geometric shape and size, and on the dynamic state. For the nonsmooth DEM (NDEM), a regularized version mapping to the Hertz contact law is presented. This method has the conventional nonsmooth and smooth DEM as special cases depending on size of time step and value of regularization. The use of the projected Gauss‐Seidel solver for NDEM simulation is studied on a range of test systems. The following characteristics are found. First, the smooth DEM is computationally more efficient for soft materials, wide and tall systems, and with increasing flow rate. Secondly, the NDEM is more beneficial for stiff materials, shallow systems, static or slow flow, and with increasing error tolerance. Furthermore, it is found that just as pressure saturates with depth in a granular column, due to force arching, also the required number of iterations saturates and become independent of system size. This effect make the projected Gauss‐Seidel solver scale much better than previously thought. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Temperature change, as a common kind of internal perturbation performed on granular materials, has a significant effect on the bulk properties of granular materials. However, few studies on thermally-induced shakedown under a long-term thermal cycling were reported. In this work, the discrete element method was used to give insight into the thermally-induced shakedown on the fabric and stress states within non-cohesive, frictional granular assemblies. Assemblies were submitted to thermal cycling at a stationary boundary condition after experiencing a one-dimensional compression. Evolution of coordination number, entropy and anisotropy was investigated as well as boundary forces and contact forces. At the same time, effects of the heating rate, the initial vertical load and the magnitude of temperature change were examined. It demonstrates that thermal cycling induces a significant force relaxation within granular materials, while the corresponding granular fabric has a small change. In addition, the entropy and anisotropy decreases with thermal cycling. Moreover, the initial vertical load can constrain the development of thermally-induced fabric change, thereby limiting force relaxation to some degree. Both high heating rate and larger magnitudes of temperature change contribute to more significant force relaxation. However, they cause smaller fabric changes even though they provide larger perturbations.  相似文献

For discrete element methods (DEMs), integrating the equation of motion based on Newton's second law is an integral part of the computation. Accelerations and velocities are involved even for modeling static mechanics problems. As a consequence, the accuracy can be ruined and numerous calculation steps are required to converge. In this study, we propose a static DEM based on discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA). The force of inertia is removed to develop a set of static equilibrium equations for distinct blocks. It inherits the advantages of DDA in dealing with distinct block system such as jointed rock structures. Furthermore, the critical numerical artifact in DDA, ie, artificial springs between contact blocks, is avoided. Accurate numerical solution can be achieved in mere one calculation step. Last but not the least, since the method is formulated in the framework of mathematical programming, the implementation can be easily conducted with standard and readily available solvers. Its accuracy and efficiency are verified against a series of benchmarks found in the literature.  相似文献
