A novel and simple method for preparing composites of PDMS/PS core–shell emulsion and polystyrene was reported. This method was based on emulsion and suspension in situ polymerization. The relationship between the process of core–shell emulsion breaking and electrolyte concentration was studied by spectrophotometry. The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that polydimethylsiloxane soft particles were dispersed uniformly in the composites. Diameters of the composite beads ranged from 0.5 to 4.0 mm, which could be controlled by adjusting the amount of hydroxyapatite. At last, the properties of the latex film including water absorption ratio, contact angle, pendulum hardness and transparency were tested. The results showed that the content of emulsion obvious affected the properties. During the process of emulsion and suspension in situ polymerization, the contact angle of the latex films ascended to 106.06° and the transmission ratio at 500 nm decreased to 0.3 with the increasing of core–shell emulsion. Whereas, the absorption and pendulum hardness fell to 0.37% and 322 S, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2007  相似文献

Composite polymer particles with hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt) as the core and hydrophilic poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) as the shell were prepared through two‐stage emulsion polymerization without any surfactant. In the first step, narrowly distributed PSt seed particles were prepared by surfactant‐free emulsion polymerization with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride (AMPA) as the initiator. In the second step, hydrophilic PMAA shells were fabricated onto PSt seed particles through redox interfacial‐initiated seeded emulsion polymerization with cumyl hydroperoxide (CHPO)/ferrous sulfate/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)/sodium formaldehydesulfoxylate (SFS), where the initiation took place mainly at the interface between PSt seed particles and the aqueous medium. The composite particles were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering, and the results show that a core/shell structure was successfully built. Hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of the composite particles increased with the amount of polymerized monomers in the seeded emulsion polymerization. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Suspension‐emulsion combined polymerization process, in which methyl methacrylate (MMA) emulsion polymerization constituents (EPC) were drop wise added to styrene (St) suspension polymerization system, was applied to prepare polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS/PMMA) composite particles. The influences of the feeding condition and the composition of EPC on the particle feature of the resulting composite polymer particles were investigated. It was found that PS/PMMA core‐shell composite particles with a narrow particle size distribution and a great size would be formed when the EPC was added at the viscous energy dominated particle formation stage of St suspension polymerization with a suitable feeding rate, whereas St‐MMA copolymer particles or PS/PMMA composite particles with imperfect core‐shell structure would be formed when the EPC was added at the earlier or later stage of St suspension polymerization, respectively. It was also showed that the EPC composition affected the composite particles formation process. The individual latex particles would exist in the final product when the concentrations of MMA monomer, sodium dodecyl sulfate emulsifier, and potassium persulfate initiator were great in the EPC. Considering the feature of St suspension polymerization and the morphology of PS/PMMA composite particles, the formation mechanism of PS/PMMA particles with core‐shell structure was proposed. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butyl acrylate)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PBA/PMMA) core–shell particles embedded with nanometer‐sized silica particles were prepared by emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate (BA) in the presence of silica particles preabsorbed with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AIBA) initiator and subsequent MMA emulsion polymerization in the presence of PBA/silica composite particles. The morphologies of the resulting PBA/silica and PBA/silica/PMMA composite particles were characterized, which showed that AIBA could be absorbed effectively onto silica particles when the pH of the dispersion medium was greater than the isoelectric potential point of silica. The critical amount of AIBA added to have stable dispersion of silica particles increased as the pH of the dispersion medium increased. PBA/silica composite particles prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization using silica preabsorbed with AIBA showed higher silica absorption efficiency than did the PBA/silica composite particles prepared by direct mixing of PBA latex and silica dispersion or by emulsion polymerization in which AIBA was added after the mixing of BA and silica. The PBA/silica composite particles exhibited a raspberrylike morphology, with silica particles “adhered” to the surfaces of the PBA particles, whereas the PBA/silica/PMMA composite latex particles exhibited a sandwich morphology, with silica particles mainly at the interface between the PBA core and the PMMA shell. Subsequently, the PBA/silica/PMMA composite latex obtained had a narrow particle size distribution and good dispersion stability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical-induced grafting of n-butyl acrylate (BA) onto poly(butadiene-co-styrene) [(P(Bd-S)] latexes during seeded emulsion polymerization was studied. This P(Bd-S)/PBA rubber/rubber core/shell latex system exhibited unique grafting behavior as compared to other extensively studied rubber/glass core/shell latex systems, such as poly(butadiene-co-styrene)/poly(methyl methacrylate) [P(Bd-S)/PMMA], poly(butadiene-co-styrene)/polystyrene [P(Bd-S)/PS] and poly(butadiene-co-styrene)/poly(acrylonitrile)[P(Bd-S)/PAN]. These composite latexes were characterized by the formation of a highly grafted/crosslinked P(Bd-S)/PBA interphase zone generated during the seeded emulsion polymerization process. Although both of the individual core and shell polymers studied were “soft” themselves, the resulting P(Bd-S)/PBA composite latex particles were found to be rather “hard.” The formation of the interphase zone was studied by using techniques such as solvent extraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Structured micrometric polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) particles were obtained by suspension polymerization and their expansion behavior was investigated using n‐pentane as blowing agent. The expanded particles presented two distinct microstructures with an outer region (PMMA‐rich shell) composed by cells of about 10 µm while the center of the particle (PS‐rich core) had much larger cells (50–100 μm). The core–shell particles did not expand at 100°C meaning that the PMMA shell hindered the expansion of the particles. Maximum expansion was dependent on the PMMA concentration and also on the heating temperature and the increase in the PMMA molar mass led to a delay in the onset of the process. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Monodispersed polystyrene particles in submicrometer size were intriguingly prepared through emulsifier‐free batch‐seeded emulsion polymerization using nonmonodispersed waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) beads as microreactors. Different feed ratios of styrene (St)/WBPU for the preparation of composite particles were investigated, and the size–growth course was experimentally followed. The morphology and dispersity of the particles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy together with dynamic laser scattering particle size analyzer. Their inside structure was further characterized by transmission electron microscopy with ultramicrotomy combined with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy for the composite particles' surface analysis. The probable grafting polymerization of St from WBPU was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance instrument. The obtained composite particles were again employed as the seeds in the emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate. As a result, the formed multilayered composite particles with reverse core–shell structure were also monodispersed and spherical. The mechanism of the formation of the monodispersed particles was proposed. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 40985.  相似文献

Core–shell structured particles, which comprise the rubbery core and glassy layers, were prepared by emulsifier‐free emulsion polymerization of poly(n‐butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate)/polystyrene [P(n‐BA/MMA)/PS]. The particle diameter was about 0.22 μm, and the rubbery core was uncrosslinked and lightly crosslinked, respectively. The smaller core–shell structured particle–toughened PS blends were investigated in detail. The dynamic mechanical behavior and observation by scanning electron microscopy of the modified blend system with core–shell structured particles indicated good compatibility between PS and the particles, which is the necessary qualification for an effective toughening modifier. Notched‐impact strength and related mechanical properties were measured for further evaluation of the toughening efficiency. The notched‐impact strength of the toughened PS blends with uncrosslinked particles reached almost sixfold higher than that of the untoughened PS when 15 phr of the core–shell structured particles was added. For the crosslinked particles the toughening effect for PS was not obvious. The toughening mechanism for these smaller particles also is discussed in this article. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butyl acrylate–methyl methacrylate) [P(BA–MMA]/polyaniline (PANI) core–shell complex particles were synthesized with a two‐step emulsion polymerization method with P(BA–MMA) as the core and PANI as the shell. The first step was to prepare P(BA–MMA) latex particles as the core via soapless emulsion polymerization. The second step was to prepare P(BA–MMA)/PANI core–shell particles. Sodium dodecyl sulfate was fed into the P(BA–MMA) emulsion as a surfactant, and this was followed by the addition of the aniline monomer. A bilayer structure of the surfactant over the surfaces of the core particles was desired so that the aniline monomer could be attracted near the outer surface of the core particles. In some cases, dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid was added after 2 h when the polymerization of aniline was started. The final product was the desired core–shell particles. The morphology of P(BA–MMA) and P(BA–MMA)/PANI particles was observed with transmission electron microscopy. The thermal properties were studied with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, conductive films made from the core–shell latexes were prepared, and the electrical conductivities of the films were studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hollow polymer latex particles containing a hydrophilic core were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization with MAA/BA/MMA/St as comonomers, followed by stepwise alkalization treatment with ammonia. The size and morphology of composite latex particles was determined by TEM. The effects of the seeded emulsion polymerization conditions and alkalization treatment on the size and hollow structure of latex were investigated. The results showed that the optimum content of crosslinking agent in the shell polymers was about 0.5–1.0 wt %, emulsifier was about 0.8–1.1 wt %, and the core/shell weight ratio was 1/7. To obtain uniform hollow latex particles with large size, the starved feeding technique should be adopted in seeded emulsion polymerization, and the neutralization temperature should equal to the Tg of the shell polymer. Then, the obtained polymer particles under this condition had an excellent hollow structure.

A multi‐stage polymerization method was previously used to prepare PNIPAM/PS core/shell particles that exhibited uniform “raspberry‐like” structures. In this current study, this polymerization process was carefully investigated in order to elucidate the PS (polystyrene) shell formation mechanism. The results indicated that the “raspberry” structure is due to heterocoagulation of polystyrene domains onto PNIPAM (poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)) particle surfaces. Different sizes and numbers of the PS domains can be obtained by varying the styrene feed rate. It was also found that linear PNIPAM may increase the compatibility between PNIPAM and PS polymers. In addition, this heterocoagulation mechanism for forming structured particles was successfully applied to a PNIPAM and Ludox® colloidal silica nanoparticle system where a core/shell structure was also obtained. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the absence of emulsifier, we prepared stable emulsifier‐free polymethylmethacrylate/polystyrene (PMMA/PSt) copolymer latex by batch method with comonomer N,N‐dimethyl, N‐butyl, N‐methacryloloxylethyl ammonium bromide (DBMEA) by using A1BN as initiator. The size distribution of the latex particles was very narrow and the copolymer particles were spherical and very uniform. Under the same recipe and polymerization conditions, PMMA/PSt and PSt/PMMA composite polymer particle latices were prepared by a semicontinuous emulsifier‐free seeded emulsion polymerization method. The sizes and size distributions of composite latex particles were determined both by quasi‐elastic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects of feeding manner and staining agents on the morphologies of the composite particles were studied. The results were as follows: the latex particles were dyed with pH 2.0 phosphotungestic acid solution and with uranyl acetate solution, respectively, revealing that the morphologies of the composite latex particles were obviously core–shell structures. The core–shell polymer structure of PMMA/PSt was also studied by 1H, 13C, 2D NMR, and distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer, or DEPT, spectroscopy. Results showed that PMMA/PSt polymers are composed of PSt homopolymer, PMMA homopolymer, and PMMA‐g‐PSt graft copolymers; results by NMR are consistent with TEM results. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of core–shell polymeric particles of styrene butyl acrylate were successfully prepared in the presence of polymerizable emulsifier. The compositions of the emulsions obtained were confirmed by Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry. Latexes and emulsion films were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The thermostability of emulsion films was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the existence of polymerizable emulsifier could enhance the solid content of the emulsion and the monomer conversion. The optimum mass ratio of polymerizable emulsifier to traditional emulsifier was 1:1, and the polymerizable emulsifier can participate in the emulsion polymerization perfectly. An emulsion with reverse core–shell particles exhibited better hydrophobic properties and thermostability than one with traditional core–shell particles. The film formed by the emulsion with reverse core–shell particles had lower water absorption, and it could be used in the fields of coatings, surface sizing agents, and spinning. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, PBA/P(MMA–crosslinking agent)-composite particle latexes were prepared by semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization. To determine the seed emulsion's saturating capacity of an emulsifier, a mathematical model was built to simulate the changes of the seed PBA emulsion's surface tension with the amount of emulsifier added dropwise. The effects of the emulsifier amount added in the second stage and the addition method on the morphology of the composite particles were studied. The results were shown as follows: If the amount of emulsifier added in one batch to the seed emulsion in the second stage was less than or equal to the saturating capacity of emulsifier of the seed emulsion (Cs), the morphology of the particles was “core–shell”; otherwise, a few particles were of a core–shell structure. However, if shell materials were preemulsified and added dropwise at an appropriate rate, the latex particles were still of a core–shell structure, even when the amount of emulsifier added to the seed emulsion was greater than the Cs. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this work, butyl acrylate and styrene were used as monomers in the first stage and second stage of polymerization, respectively, and potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) was used as the initiator to synthesize the poly(butyl acrylate)–polystyrene (PBA/PS) composite latex by the method of two-stage soapless emulsion polymerization. The morphology of the latex particles was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which showed that the composite latex particles had a core–shell structure. The particle-size distribution of the composite latex was very uniform. A thin layer of a PBA-graft-PS copolymer was formed in between the core (PBA) and shell (PS) regions, which thus increased the compatibility between the PBA and PS phases. The process of heating and pressuring influenced the morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal properties of the PBA/PS composite polymer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The self‐assembly of pH‐responsive poly (methyl methacrylate‐co‐acrylic acid) latex particles at emulsion droplet interfaces was achieved. Raising pH increases the hydrophilicity of the latex particles in situ and the latex particle acts as an efficient particulate emulsifier self‐assembling at emulsion droplet interface at around pH 10–11 but exhibits no emulsifier activity at higher pH. This effect can be reversibly induced simply by varying the aqueous phase pH and thus the latex emulsifier can be reassembled. The effect factors, including the aqueous phase pH, the surface carboxyl content, ζ‐Potential of the latex particles and oil phase solvent have been investigated. Using monomer as oil phase, the latex particles could stabilize emulsion droplets during polymerization and cage‐like polymer microspheres with hollow core/porous shell structure were obtained after polymerization. The mechanism of the latex particles self‐assembly was discussed. The morphologies of emulsion and microspheres were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core shell latex particles with a glassy core and a low Tg polymeric shell are usually preferred. More so, the glassy core happens to be a fluoropolymer with a shell polymer that helps in processability. We describe here the preparation and characterization of core shell nanoparticles consisting of poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene‐co‐ethylvinylether) as core encapsulated in poly(styrene‐acrylate) copolymer shell using seeded emulsion polymerization method under kinetically controlled monomer starved conditions. Properties of the emulsion using surfactants (fluoro/conventional) and surfactant free conditions were investigated. Average size (100 nm), spherical shape and core–shell morphology of the latex particles was confirmed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Absence of C? F and C? Cl peaks in X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy proves that cores are completely covered. Polymerization in the presence of fluorocarbon surfactant was found to give optimum features like narrow size distribution, good shell deposition and no traces of agglomeration. Films of core shell latex particles exhibited improved transparency and enhanced water contact angles thus making them suitable for applications in various fields including coatings. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Emulsion and suspension polymerization processes have widely been studied for more than 40 years. Although both polymerization processes are performed in heterogeneous media, each one presents its own typical characteristics, such as the particle size distribution, molecular weight distribution, polymer particle nucleation rate, and polymerization rate. In this study, semibatch styrene suspension polymerizations were carried out with feed compositions typical of emulsion processes. The initial reactor charge resembled the recipe of standard styrene suspension polymerizations, and the emulsion polymerization constituents were added during the batch. The influence of the moment at which the emulsion feed was started on the course of the polymerization and the effects of the feed on the polymer properties were analyzed. The polymer particle morphology and the average molecular weights changed very significantly with the emulsion feed time, and the changes could lead to the production of broad molecular weight distributions. Core–shell polymer particles could also be obtained, with the core being formed of polymer particles originating from the suspension polymerization process and the shell being formed of polymer particles originating from the emulsion polymerization. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel approach based on an emulsion in situ suspension polymerization process for synthesizing poly(acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene) (ABS) resin is reported. Experimental results show that the reaction system can be transformed from an emulsion state to a suspension polymerization state steadily with the content of polybutadiene (PB) in the range 0–15 wt% in ABS resin. When PB is replaced by poly(styrene‐co‐butadiene) with the content of rubber particles being kept below 20 wt%, the emulsion system can be easily transferred to the suspension polymerization state through a process of latex coagulation in the forward direction, which means that the emulsion solution was dripped slowly into the suspension reaction system in the presence of coagulating agent. The dispersion status of the rubber particles in the ABS resin was studied using transmission electron microscopy, which indicated that the rubber particles were in a dispersed state in a continuous matrix of poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) when the content of rubber particles was below 20 wt%. The mechanical properties of the ABS resins obtained are as follows: elongation at break, 9.4–45.7%; yield tensile strength, 35.1–42.2 MPa; impact strength, 98.2–116.3 J m?1.
