Nanocomposites containing a thermoplastic blend and organophilic layered clay (organoclay) were produced by melt compounding. The blend composition was kept constant [polyamide 6 (PA6) 70 wt % + polypropylene (PP) 30 wt %], whereas the organoclay content was varied between 0 and 10 wt %. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined on injection‐molded specimens in both tensile and flexural loading. Highest strength values were observed at an organoclay content of 4 wt % for the blends. The flexural strength was superior to the tensile one, which was traced to the effect of the molding‐induced skin‐core structure. Increasing organoclay amount resulted in severe material embrittlement reflected in a drop of both strength and strain values. The morphology of the nanocomposites was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy‐dispersion X‐ray analysis (EDX), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). It was established that the organoclay is well dispersed (exfoliated) and preferentially embedded in the PA6 phase. Further, the exfoliation degree of the organoclay decreased with increasing organoclay content. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 175–189, 2004  相似文献

A thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) containing 70 wt % styrene–ethylene–butadiene‐styrene‐g‐maleic anhydride and 30 wt % polypropylene and its nanocomposites reinforced with 0.3–1.5 wt % organoclay were prepared by melt mixing followed by injection molding. The mechanical and fracture behaviors of the TPO/clay nanocomposites were investigated. The essential work of fracture (EWF) approach was used to evaluate the tensile fracture behavior of the nanocomposites toughened with elastomer. Tensile tests showed that the stiffness and tensile strength of TPO was enhanced by the addition of low loading levels of organically modified montmorillonite. EWF measurements revealed that the fracture toughness of the TPO/clay nanocomposites increased with increasing clay content. The organoclay toughened the TPO matrix of the nanocomposites effectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Linear, one‐binding‐site or two‐binding‐site (N+) organifiers with two hydroxyl end groups were synthesized, and novel organoclays were prepared through a cation‐exchange reaction between pristine sodium montmorillonite and the synthesized organifiers. After sonication of the as‐prepared organoclay in N,N′‐dimethylformamide for 10 min, the average size of the clay decreased to about 1 μm. The X‐ray diffraction patterns confirmed that the d‐spacing of the silicate layers of the organoclay expanded from 1.1 to about 1.9 nm and the peak intensity decreased with the molecular weight of the organifier increasing. Polyurethane/clay nanocomposites were synthesized by a one‐shot polymerization method. Both intercalated and exfoliated structures of the layered silicates in the polyurethane matrix were observed from transmission electron microscopy micrographs, and the d‐spacing ranged from 4 to 10 nm. The thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite were enhanced by the introduction of the organoclay into the polyurethane matrix. An approximately 40–46°C increase in the onset decomposition temperature, a 200% increase in the tensile strength with a 0.5 wt % clay loading, and a 49% increase in Young's modulus with a 3 wt % clay loading were achieved. The effects of the molecular weight and the number of binding sites of the organifier on the properties of the nanocomposites were also evaluated. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene‐based ternary nanocomposites were prepared with different clay structures, obtained by the modification of purified Resadiye bentonite as the reinforcement, a random terpolymer of ethylene, butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride with the trade name Lotader3210 as the compatibilizer, and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) as the polymer matrix in an intensive batch mixer. The quaternary ammonium/phosphonium salts used for the modification of bentonite were dimethyldioctadecyl ammonium (DMDA) chloride (Cl), tetrakisdecyl ammonium (TKA) bromide (Br), and tributylhexadecyl phosphonium (TBHP) Br. The effects of the physical properties and structure of the organoclay on the clay dispersion were studied at different clay contents (2 and 5 wt %) and at a compatibilizer/organoclay ratio of 2.5. The extent of organoclay dispersion was determined by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and was verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), mechanical testing, and rheological analysis. XRD analysis showed that the nanocomposite with the organoclay DMDA contained intercalated silicate layers, as also verified by TEM. The TEM analysis of the nanocomposites with TBHP exhibited intercalated/partially exfoliated clay dispersion. TKA, with a crowded alkyl environment, sheltered and hindered the intercalation of polymer chains through the silicate layers. In comparison to pure LLDPE, nanocomposites with a 33–41% higher Young's modulus, 16–9% higher tensile strength, and 75–144% higher elongation at break were produced with DMDA and TBHP, respectively (at 5 wt % organoclay). The storage modulus increased by 807–1393%, and the dynamic viscosity increased by 196–339% with respect to pure LLDPE at low frequencies for the samples with DMDA and TBHP (at 5 wt % organoclay). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/clay nanocomposites (PCNs) with N‐methyl diethanol amine (MDEA)‐based organoclays are synthesized by using in situ polymerization. Four kinds of MDEA‐based materials are prepared and used as organifiers of pristine montmorillonite. The clay treated with the organifiers has a d‐spacing range that is about 14–21 Å. The PCNs with these organoclays are characterized by using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, capillary rheometry, and tensile and barrier testing. The PCNs form an intercalated and delaminated structure. The well‐stacked nanoclays are broken down into small pieces in the PET matrix and the thickness of the clay bundle decreases to 20 nm. The melt viscosity and tensile strength of these PCNs increases with only 0.5 wt % clay. In oxygen barrier testing, the PCN with 1 wt % well‐dispersed organoclay shows a twofold higher barrier property than pure PET. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/(ethylene acrylic acid) (EAA)/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by using the melt intercalation technique. EAA was used as compatibilizer and organoclay was used as inorganic filler. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results indicated the addition of compatibilizer led to a large increase in basal spacing of nanocomposites and better overall dispersion of organoclay in the PBS matrix. However, the basal spacing was found to be invariant as the organoclay content increased. The differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed that the incorporation of the organoclay and EAA and the variation of organoclay content altered the melting behavior and crystallization properties of PBS. Storage and loss modulus of virgin matrix increased with the incorporation of organoclay and EAA, and a maximum for the nanocomposite with 9 wt% organoclay. Moreover, the glass transition temperatures also increased for the various organoclay‐containing samples. Mechanical properties showed an increase with the incorporation of organoclay and EAA. The 5 wt% organoclay‐filled PBS gave the highest tensile strength and notched Izod impact strength among all the composites. Further increments in organoclay loading reduced the tensile strength and notched impact strength of nanocomposites, which was thought to be the result of agglomeration. However, increments in clay loading enhanced the flexural strength and flexural modulus of nanocomposites, with a maximum at 9 wt% organoclay. J. VINYL ADDIT. The effect of three types of organoclays on the morphology and mechanical properties of lower critical solution temperature‐type poly(acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (ABS/PMMA) blends was investigated. Polymers were melt‐compounded with 2 and 4 wt % of clays using a twin‐screw extruder. X‐ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the intercalation of the nanoclay in the hybrid nanocomposite was more affected by the polarity of the organoclay. Although the morphology of the blends varied by PMMA content, scanning electron microscopy showed smaller PMMA domains for the hybrid systems containing clay particles. Although good dispersion of the nanoclay through the ABS matrix and at the blend interface led to enhancement of tensile strength, the increment of the stiffness was more noticeable for nanocomposites including less polar organoclay. Well‐dispersed clay platelets increased the glass transition temperature. In addition, nanoscratching analysis illustrated an improvement in scratch resistance of ABS because of the presence of PMMA and organoclay. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of nanocomposites of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with the organoclay dodecyltriphenylphosphonium‐mica (C12PPh‐mica) were synthesized with the in situ polymerization method. PET hybrid fibers with various organoclay concentrations were melt‐spun at various draw ratios (DRs) to produce monofilaments. The thermomechanical properties and morphologies of the PET hybrid fibers were characterized with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and universal tensile analysis. The organoclay was intercalated in the polymer matrix at all magnification levels, and some of the agglomerated organoclay layers were greater than 50 nm thick. The thermal stabilities and initial tensile moduli of the hybrid fibers increased with an increasing clay content for DR = 1. For DR = 1, the ultimate tensile strengths of the PET hybrid fibers increased with the addition of clay up to a critical clay loading and then decreased above that critical concentration. However, the tensile mechanical properties of the hybrid fibers did not improve with increasing DR. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2009–2016, 2005  相似文献

Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) reinforced with organo‐montmorillonite clay nanoplatelets were investigated using anhydride‐ and amine‐curing agents. The sonication technique was used to process epoxy/clay nanocomposites. The basal spacing of clay nanoplatelets was observed by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) techniques, and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the basal spacing of clay nanoplatelets in epoxy matrix was expanded after mixing with either DGEBA/DGEBF or methyltetrahydrophthalic‐anhydride (MTHPA) curing agent. The sonication technique provided larger d‐spacing of clay nanoplatelets. Because of the different curing temperatures, MTHPA‐cured epoxy/clay nanocomposites produced more expanded d‐spacing of clay nanoplatelets modified with methyl, tallow, bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium (MT2EtOH) than triethylenetetramine‐cured nanocomposites. Depending on the selection of curing agent and organic modification for clay nanoplatelets, the d‐spacing was expanded to be up to 8.72 nm. POLYM. ENG. Natural rubber (NR)/poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) blend–clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. The blend nanocomposites were prepared through the melt mixing of NR/EVA in a ratio of 40/60 with various amounts of organoclay with an internal mixer followed by compression molding. X‐ray diffraction patterns revealed that the nanocomposites formed were intercalated. The formation of the intercalated nanocomposites was also indicated by transmission electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy, used to study the fractured surface morphology, showed that the distribution of the organoclay in the polymer matrix was homogeneous. The tensile modulus of the nanocomposites increased with an increase in the organoclay content. However, an increase in the organoclay content up to 5 phr did not affect the tensile strength, but the organoclay reduced this property when it was increased further. This study also indicated that a low silicate content dispersed in the blend matrix was capable of increasing the storage modulus of the material. The addition of the organoclay also increased the decomposition temperature of the NR/EVA blends. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 353–362, 2006  相似文献

Bicyclo[2.2.2]oct‐7‐ene‐2,3,5,6‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BCDA)‐based polyimide–clay nanocomposites were prepared from their precursor, namely polyamic acid, by a solution‐casting method. The organoclay was prepared by treating sodium montmorillonite (Kunipia F) clay with dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide at 80 °C. Polyamic acid solutions containing various weight percentages of organoclay were prepared from 4,4′‐(4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenyl‐1,1′‐diyldioxy)‐dianiline and BCDA in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone containing dispersed particles of organoclay at 20 °C. These solutions were cast on a glass plate using a Doctor's blade and then heated subsequently to obtain nanocomposite films. The nanocomposites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal mechanical analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, polarizing microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and thermogravimetric analysis. The glass transition temperature of the nanocomposites was found to be higher than that of pristine polymer. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the nanocomposites decreased with increasing organoclay content. WAXD studies indicated that the extent of silicate layer separation in the nanocomposite films depended upon the organoclay content. Tensile strength and modulus of the nanocomposite containing 1% organoclay were significantly higher when compared to pristine polymer and other nanocomposites. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites was found to be higher than that of pristine polymer in air and nitrogen atmosphere. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The influence of organic modifiers on intercalation extent, structure, thermal and mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)–clay nanocomposites were studied. Two different organic modifiers with varying hydrophobicity (single tallow versus ditallow) were investigated. The nanocomposites were prepared from melt processing method and characterized using wide angle X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and tensile tests. Mechanical properties such as tensile modulus (E), break stress (σbrk), and % break strain (εbrk) were determined for nanocomposites at various clay loadings. Extent of PMMA intercalation is sufficient and in the range 9–15 Å depending on organoclay and filler loading. Overall thermal stability of nanocomposites increases by 16–30°C. The enhancement in Tg of nanocomposite is merely by 2–4°C. With increase in clay loading, tensile modulus increases linearly while % break strain decreases. Break stress is found to increase till 4 wt % and further decreases at higher clay loadings. The overall improvement in thermal and mechanical properties was higher for the organoclay containing organic modifier with lower hydrophobicity and single tallow amine chemical structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. PVC/Na+–montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared via a simple technique of emulsion polymerization at several different MMT clay concentrations. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed the formation of a mixture of intercalated and exfoliated nanostructure. Tensile testing results showed that the tensile modulus of the nanocomposites increased with the addition of clay, while the tensile strength decreased little. The notched impact strength of the nanocomposites was also improved. For systems containing clay in the range of 2.1 to 3.5 wt %, the impact strength was almost two times as large as that of pure PVC. However, those mechanical properties began to decrease with the continuously increasing amount of clay. The fracture surface of pure PVC and the nanocomposites was observed by scanning electron microscope. Thermal properties of the nanocomposites were found to increase as a result of clay incorporation. The glass transition temperatures of the PVC/clay nanocomposites were nearly identical to that of pure PVC. The Vicat softening points exhibited a progressively increasing trend with the clay content added. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 277–286, 2004  相似文献

Nanocomposites of polypropylene‐based RTPO with organically modified clays were prepared by melt compounding of three components, that is, polypropylene‐based RTPO, maleic anhydride‐grafted polypropylene oligomer (PPgMA), and organically modified clay. Their morphologies, tensile behaviors, and flammability properties were investigated. In the clay nanocomposites, the silicate layers were dispersed at the nanometer level, which was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The tensile yield strength of nanocomposites containing 10 wt % clay exhibited 2.8 times higher value compared with that of neat resin. The combustion behavior of the nanocomposites was evaluated by measuring the heat release rate (HRR) using cone calorimetry. The peak HRR was lowered greatly and the char yield was very high compared with those of neat resin. However, these flame retardant properties of clay are not sufficient as a flame retardant used alone in cable applications. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by solution intercalation method. The clay was organo‐modified with the intercalation agent cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the layers of MMT were intercalated by CPC. Four nanocomposites with organoclay contents of 1, 5, 10, and 15 wt % were prepared by solution blending. XRD showed that the interlayer spacing of organoclay in the nanocomposites depends on the amount of organoclay present. According to the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, clay behaves as a nucleating agent and enhances the crystallization rate of PET. The maximum enhancement of crystallization rate for the nanocomposites was observed in those containing about 10 wt % organoclay within the studied range of 1–15 wt %. From thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we found that the thermal stability of the nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of 1–15 wt % organoclay. These nanocomposites showed high levels of dispersion without agglomeration of particles at low organoclay content (5 wt %). An agglomerated structure did form in the PET matrix at 15 wt % organoclay. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 140–145, 2004  相似文献

Two different kinds of clay were organomodified with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as an intercalation agent. Poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT)/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by the solution intercalation method. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) indicated that the layers of clay were intercalated by CPC and the interlayer spacing was a function of the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the clay: the higher the CEC, the larger the interlayer spacing is. The WAXD studies showed that the interlayer spacing of organoclay in the nanocomposites depends on the amount of organoclay. From the results of differential scanning calorimetry analysis it was found that clay behaves as a nucleating agent and enhances the crystallization rate of PTT. The maximum enhancement of the crystallization rate for the nanocomposites was observed in nanocomposites containing about 5 wt % organoclay with a range of 1–15 wt %. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites was enhanced by the addition of 1–10 wt % organoclay as found from thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal stability of the PTT/organoclay nanocomposites was related to the organoclay content and the dispersion in the PTT matrix. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The aim of this work is the production of new nanocomposites from metallocene polyethylene‐octene elastomer (POE), montmorillonite and biodegradable starch by means of a melt blending method. Characterizations of clay, modified clay, POE, POE‐g‐AA, and the hybrids produced from polymer, clay, and/or starch were performed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Instron mechanical tester. As to the results, organophilic clay can be well dispersed into acrylic acid grafted polyethylene‐octene elastomer (POE‐g‐AA) in nanoscale sizes since cetyl pyridium chloride is partially compatible with POE‐g‐AA and allows POE‐g‐AA chains to intercalate into clay layers. Based on consideration of thermal and mechanical properties, it is also found that 12 wt % of clay content is optimal for preparation of POE‐g‐AA/clay nanocomposites. The new partly biodegradable POE‐g‐AA/clay/starch hybrid could obviously improve the elongation and the tensile strength at break of the POE‐g‐AA/starch hybrid since the former can give the smaller starch phase size and nanoscale dispersion of silicate layers in the polymer matrix. The nanocomposites produced from our laboratory can provide a stable tensile strength at break when the starch content is up to 40 wt %. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/clay nanocomposites were synthesized using the solution intercalation method. Na ion‐exchanged clays [Na+–saponite (SPT) and Na+–montmorillonite (MMT)] and alkyl ammonium ion‐exchanged clays (C12–MMT and C12OOH–MMT) were used for the PVA nanocomposites. From the morphological studies, the Na ion‐exchanged clay is more easily dispersed in a PVA matrix than is the alkyl ammonium ion‐exchanged clay. Attempts were also made to improve both the thermal stabilities and the tensile properties of PVA/clay nanocomposite films, and it was found that the addition of only a small amount of clay was sufficient for that purpose. Both the ultimate tensile strength and the initial modulus for the nanocomposites increased gradually with clay loading up to 8 wt %. In C12OOH–MMT, the maximum enhancement of the ultimate tensile strength and the initial modulus for the nanocomposites was observed for blends containing 6 wt % organoclay. Na ion‐exchanged clays have higher tensile strengths than those of organic alkyl‐exchanged clays in PVA nanocomposites films. On the other hand, organic alkyl‐exchanged clays have initial moduli that are better than those of Na ion‐exchanged clays. Overall, the content of clay particles in the polymer matrix affect both the thermal stability and the tensile properties of the polymer/clay nanocomposites. However, a change in thermal stability with clay was not significant. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 3208–3214, 2003  相似文献

Nanocomposite polyurethane (PU)–organoclay materials have been synthesized via in‐situ polymerization. The organoclay is first prepared by intercalation of tyramine into montmorillonite (MMT)‐clay through ion exchange process. The syntheses of polyurethane–organoclay hybrid films containing different ratios of clay were carried out by swelling the organoclay into diol and diamine followed by addition of diisocyanate and then cured. The nanocomposites with dispersed and exfoliated structure of MMT were obtained as evidenced by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. X‐ray diffraction showed that there is no peak corresponding to d001 spacing in organoclay with the ratios up to 20 wt%. SEM images confirmed the dispersion of nanometer silicate layers in the polyurethane matrix. Also, it was found that the presence of organoclay leads to improvement in the mechanical properties. The tensile strength was increased with increasing the organoclay contents to 20 wt% by 221% in comparision to the PU with 0% organoclay. POLYM. Mesua ferrea L. seed oil based highly branched polyester and epoxy resins blends were prepared by mechanical mixing at different weight ratios. The best performing blend was used as the matrix for the preparation of nanocomposites with different dose levels of organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanoclay. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Data resulting from the mechanical and thermal studies of the blends and nanocomposites indicated improvements in the tensile strength and thermal stability to appreciable extents for the nanocomposites with OMMT loading. The nanocomposites were characterized as well‐dispersed, partially exfoliated structures with good interfacial interactions. From the X‐ray diffraction analysis, the absence of d001 reflections of the OMMT clay in the cured nanocomposites indicated the development of an exfoliated clay structure, which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The homogeneous morphologies of the pure polyester/epoxy blend and clay hybrid systems were ascertained with scanning electron microscopy. The tensile strength of the 5 wt % clay‐filled blend nanocomposite system was increased by 2.4 times compared to that of the pure blend resin system. The results suggest that the prepared nanocomposites have the potential to be used as active thin films for different applications. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献
