PMMA/MMT nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via in situ intercalative polymerization, and characterized by means of wide‐angle X‐ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis and Fourier‐transform infrared analysis. The nanocomposites possess partially exfoliated and partially intercalated structure, in which the silicate layers are exfoliated into nanometre secondary particles with thickness of less than 20 nm and uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix. In comparison with pure PMMA, the thermal stability, glass transition temperature, and mechanical properties of the polymer are notably improved by the presence of the nanometric silicate layers. It was found that part of the PMMA chains in the nanocomposites are well immobilized inside and/or onto the layered silicates and, therefore, the unique properties of the nanocomposites result from the strong interactions between the nanometric silicate layers and the polymer chains. BACKGROUND: The nature of the dispersion of clay platelets in a resin composite will play an important role in the process of enhancement of the physical properties of that material. This paper examines how different modifiers and the quantity of surface treatment for the Cloisite® range of organically modified clays affect properties in in situ polymerised poly(methyl methacrylate). Another clay which is a mixture of rod‐ and platelet‐like minerals is also investigated to understand how the shape of the clay particles can affect the polymer properties. RESULTS: Five different clays, including Cloisite 30B and Cloisite 15A, were dispersed using ultrasound and the cure of the samples was monitored using the Strathclyde Rheometer. Rheology, transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction were used to determine that a good level of clay dispersion was achieved. The mixed mineral formed the most stable dispersion seen from settling tests. CONCLUSIONS: The cure accelerated in the presence of organoclay, although the affect was less pronounced at higher temperatures. The glass transition temperature was increased by 20 °C with only a few weight percent of clay and water uptake was not adversely affected. Copyright © 2008 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐poly(L ‐lactic acid)‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymer was prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The structure and properties of the copolymer were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR), thermogravimetry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic plot for the ATRP of methyl methacrylate using poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) as the initiator shows that the reaction time increases linearly with ln[M]0/[M]. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve grafted chains with well‐defined molecular weights, and block copolymers with narrowed molecular weight distributions. The thermal stability of PLLA is improved by copolymerization. A new wash‐extraction method for removing copper from the ATRP has also exhibits satisfactory results. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Clay‐dispersed poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) nanocomposites (PSAN) were synthesized by a free radical polymerization process. The montmorillonite (MMT) was modified by a cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. The structures of PSAN were determined by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. The dispersion of silicate layers in the polymer matrix was also revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was confirmed that the clay was intercalated and exfoliated in the PSAN matrix. The increased thermal stability of PSAN with the addition of clay was observed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dielectric properties of PSAN were measured in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz at 35–70°C. It was found that the dielectric constant from the dipole orientation had been suppressed due to the intercalation of clay. The dielectric loss is strongly related to the residual sodium content of clay, which increases as the sodium content increases by the addition of clay. Long‐fiber pellets were made by an in situ pultrusion process. Fiber‐reinforced composites were prepared by an injection‐molding process and an extrusion/injection‐molding method with pellets, respectively. SEM observations showed that the strong interface was maintained during the injection process for low shearing forces, although polymer adhesion to the fiber surface was completely delaminated in the process of extrusion/injection molding for very high shearing forces. Enhanced adhesion of composites promoted substantial improvement of mechanical properties compared to those with poor adhesion. However, the enhanced adhesion between the fiber and the matrix also sacrificed the impact resistance properties. Longer fibers substantially enhanced the properties of composites. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 93: 2478–2483, 2004  相似文献

In this study, the mechanical properties of two different permanent soft lining materials and their bonding to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were compared. Both of the soft liners were heat‐cured commercial materials. The polymerization was carried out by conventional methods suggested by manufacturer, and the curing was done at the temperature of boiling water for 5, 15, 25, and 35 min. The sample groups were tested in the computer‐aided tensile‐testing machine at a rate of 2 mm/min. The slow rate helps the collection of more and more reliable data. At this time, the stress–strain curves were used to calculate ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, resilience, and toughness. The measurements were carried for PMMA, Molloplast B, Flexor, and a combination of PMMA/soft liner. After introducing the soft lining material on PMMA of the same thickness, the new material structure was more elastic than the original PMMA. Flexor showed adhesive failure at studied curing periods, but Molloplast B gave larger tear strength values and cohesive rather than adhesive failure at the 25‐min and 35‐min curing times. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene‐clay nanocomposite (PsCN) materials were synthesized and their properties of crystallinity, thermal behavior, and dielectric characteristics were investigated. A polymerizable cationic surfactant, [2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]triphenylphonium bromide, was used for the intercalation of montmorillonite (MMT). The organophilic MMT was prepared by Na+‐exchanged MMT and ammonium cations of a cationic surfactant in an aqueous medium. Organophilic styrene monomers were intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts followed by a free‐radical polymerization. Exfoliation to 2 wt % MMT in the polystyrene (PS) matrix was achieved as revealed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Thermal properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were also studied. The dielectric properties of PsCNs in the form of film with clay loading from 1.0 to 5.0 wt % were measured under frequencies of 100 Hz–1 MHz at 25–70°C. A decreased dielectric constant and low dielectric loss were observed for PsCN materials. The dielectric response at low frequency that originated from dipole orientation was suppressed due to the intercalation of clay materials. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites were synthesized using reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) in miniemulsion. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant applicable at higher temperatures was used for miniemulsion stabilization. Successful RATRP was carried out by using 4,4′‐dinonyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbPy) as ligand. Monodispersed droplets and particles with sizes in the range of 200 nm were revealed by dynamic light scattering (DLS). Conversion and molecular weight study was carried out using gravimetry and size exclusion chromatography (SEC) respectively. By adding clay content, a decrease in the conversion and molecular weight and an increase in the PDI value of the nanocomposites are observed. Thermal stability of the nanocomposites in comparison with the neat copolymer is revealed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Increased Tg values by adding clay content was also obtained using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the nanoconposite with 1 wt % of nanoclay loading, display monodispersed spherical particles with sizes in the range of ~ 200 nm. SEM findings are more compiled with dynamic light scattering (DLS) results. Well‐dispersed exfoliated clay layers in the polymer matrix of the nanocomposite with 1 wt % nanoclay loading is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) data. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, the solvent effect on the miscibility between poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in ternary polymer solutions was examined by the viscometric method. In these systems, we could understand that the used solvents, tetrahydrofuran (THF) or N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF), mainly affect the interaction between PVC and PMMA, while prompting various miscible properties. In PVC/PMMA/THF solution, THF is a near θ‐solvent and a poor solvent for PVC and PMMA, respectively. The mixing of the tighter PMMA coils and more extended PVC coils in THF may cause the sea–island heterogeneous structure below the weight fraction of PMMA in the polymer mixture wPMMA = 0.7, resulting in immiscible PVC/PMMA mixtures. At wPMMA ≥ 0.7, the PVC/PMMA mixtures are relatively miscible, giving homogeneous polymer solutions. It means that the miscibility between PVC and PMMA depends on the composition of polymer mixture. However, due to the similar affinity of DMF to PVC and PMMA, PVC/PMMA/DMF solutions exhibit high miscibility between PVC and PMMA at about wPMMA = 0.5. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The plastic and fracture behavior of ‘model’ hybrid materials based on methyl methacrylate and methacryloxypropyl‐grafted nanosilica was investigated. A four‐step synthesis procedure allowed preparation of transparent nanosilica–poly(methyl methacrylate) networks of well‐defined architecture, of variable particle diameter, volume fraction of particles, number of methacryloyl units grafted per surface unit of silica particles and nature of the grafting agent. Plasticity behavior was investigated through compression tests. The evolution of yield stress with volume fraction of fillers can be understood by taking into account the undeformability of particles and using the geometrical Kerner approach. The reduction of plastic flow plateau by a substantial strain hardening was imputed to the presence of crosslinks on the particles. Fracture properties were deduced from three‐point bending experiments on notched samples. The effects on toughness of filler incorporation are tentatively related to plasticity and to the presence of crosslinks. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Polystyrene–clay nanocomposite (PsCN) materials have been prepared by a free radical polymerization process. Montmorillonite (MMT), modified by two different organics, was investigated: one contains a short chain and three benzyl groups on the ammonium ion (DAETPB), while the other contains a long chain (HTAC). The organic modification determines the extent of exfoliation or intercalation of the materials. Exfoliation is more likely to occur using HTAC, as then the gallery of clay has been opened more due to the long chain structure. Exfoliation of MMT in polystyrene (PS) matrix was revealed by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to confirm the increased thermal stability of these PsCN materials. Dielectric properties of polystyrene‐clay nanocomposites, in the form of film with clay loading from 1.0 to 5.0 wt %, were measured under frequencies of 100 Hz~1 MHz at 25~70°C. Decreased dielectric constant and low dielectric loss were observed for PsCN materials. Especially, the decrease of dielectric constant was found to be related to the extent of exfoliation of clay. It is recognized that the confinement effect of clay results in the suppression of the dielectric response of the nanocomposite materials at low frequency. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Star-branched poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMA) were synthesized by linking ‘living’ arms (produced by anionic polymerzation) with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Stars having arm molecular weights of 10000 and 40000 and between 4.9 and 18.7 branches were produced. The polymers were characterized using light scattering, size exclusion chromatography, and viscometry. It was found that well-defined PMMA stars were obtained only at the higher (40000) arm molecular weight. The stars prepared using the lower molecular weight (c. 10000) arms contained very high molecular weight gel components.  相似文献

In this study, we prepared a series of polymer–clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials that consisted of an emeraldine base of poly(o‐methoxyaniline) and layered montmorillonite. Organic o‐methoxyaniline monomers were first intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts followed by a one‐step in situ oxidative polymerization. The as‐synthesized PCN materials were subsequently characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, wide‐angle powder X‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The molecular weights of PMA extracted from PCN materials and bulk PMA were determined by GPC with THF as eluant. Effects of the material composition on the thermal stability, flame resistance, electrical conductivity, and corrosion inhibition performance of PMA, along with a series of PCN materials in the form of fine powder and coating, were also studied by TGA, limiting oxygen index measurements, four‐point probe technique, and electrochemical corrosion measurements, respectively. Morphological images of as‐synthesized materials were also investigated by SEM. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 88: 1072–1080, 2003  相似文献

Miscibility and properties of two atactic poly(methyl methacrylate)‐based blends [containing 10 and 20% of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate)] have been investigated as a function of thermal treatments. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis of blends quenched in liquid nitrogen or ice/water, after annealing at T > 190 °C, showed a single glass transition temperature, indicating miscibility of the components for the time‐temperature history. Two glass transition temperatures, equal to those of the pure components, are instead found for blends after annealing at T < 190 °C. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the homogeneity for the former quenched blends and phase separation for the latter. These results indicate the presence of an upper critical solution temperature (UCST). Tensile experiments, performed on two series of samples annealed at temperatures above and below the UCST, showed that the copolyester induces a decrease of Young's modulus and stresses at yielding and break points, and a marked increase of elongation at break. Differences in tensile properties between the two series of annealed blends are accounted for by the physical state of the components at room temperature after annealing above or below the UCST. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microspheres carrying poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) were prepared for the removal of heavy‐metal ions (copper, cadmium, and lead) from aqueous solutions with different amounts of these ions (50–600 mg/L) and different pH values (3.0–7.0). Ester groups in the PMMA structures were converted to imine groups in a reaction with PEI as a metal‐chelating ligand in the presence of NaH. The adsorption of heavy‐metal ions on the unmodified PMMA microspheres was very low [3.6 μmol/g for Cu(II), 4.6 μmol/g for Cd(II), and 4.2 μmol/g for Pb(II)]. PEI immobilization significantly increased the heavy‐metal adsorption [0.224 mmol/g for Cu(II), 0.276 mmol/g for Cd(II), and 0.126 mmol/g for Pb(II)]. The affinity order of adsorption (in moles) was Cd(II) > Cu(II) > Pb(II). The adsorption of heavy‐metal ions increased with increasing pH and reached a plateau value around pH 5.5. Their adsorption behavior was approximately described with the Langmuir equation. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 197–205, 2001  相似文献

A series of polymer–clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials that consist of poly(N‐vinylcarbazole) (PNVC) and layered montmorillonite (MMT) clay are prepared by effectively dispersing the inorganic nanolayers of MMT in an organic PNVC matrix via in situ photoinitiated polymerization with triarylsulfonium salt as the initiator. Organic NVC monomers are first intercalated into the interlayer regions of the organophilic clay hosts, followed by one‐step UV‐radiation polymerization. The as‐synthesized PCN materials are typically characterized by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The molecular weights of PNVCs extracted from the PCN materials and the bulk PNVC are determined by gel permeation chromatography analysis with tetrahydrofuran as the eluant. The morphological image of the synthesized materials is observed by an optical polarizing microscope. The effects of the material composition on the optical properties and thermal stability of PNVCs and a series of PCN materials (solution and fine powder) are also studied by UV–visible absorption spectra measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polycarbonates (PCs) having poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMAs) as graft chains were prepared by the polycondensation of PC oligomers bearing chloroformate groups as the end groups with dicarboxyl‐terminated PMMA macromonomers, which were prepared by the radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of thiomalic acid as a chain transfer. The resulting PC‐PMMA graft copolymers were transparent in comparison with PC/PMMA blend polymers, and had higher Vickers hardness than blend polymers when both of them had the same PMMA content. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, the improvement of Vickers hardness was conducive to length (46%) and number (37%) of PMMA branches. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The effect of tacticity on the interfacial region between poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and silica in a PMMA/silica nanocomposite was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The glass transition temperature (Tg) values of the syndiotactic (st-) and atactic (at-) PMMA/silica nanocomposites are higher than those of the neat PMMA. Conversely, the Tg of the isotactic (it-) PMMA/silica nanocomposite is slightly higher than that of the neat it-PMMA. DSC and XRD results suggest that the restriction of the PMMA chain mobility in the silica nanoparticle interfacial region heightens as the syndiotactic content increases. FT-IR results show that this phenomenon is caused by the interaction between the carbonyl group of PMMA and the silanol group on the silicon dioxide surface. Therefore, it can be concluded that the syndiotactic-rich PMMA has a significantly different molecular mobility from that of the neat PMMA in the interfacial region with silica nanoparticle surface than isotactic-rich PMMA.  相似文献

Polymer blends composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) were prepared via radical-initiated polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of PVAc. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis were employed to investigate the miscibility and phase behavior of the blends. The PMMA/PVAc blends of in situ polymerization were found to be phase separated and exhibited a two-phase structure, although some chain transferring reaction between the components occurred. The phase separation resulted from the solvent effect of MMA during the in situ polymerization, which was confirmed by the investigation of phase behavior based on solution cast blending. Solubility analysis of the polymerized blends indicated that some chain transferring reaction between the components occurred during the polymerization. An abrupt increase in gel content from 21.2 to 72.4 wt % was observed when the inclusion of PVAc increased from 30 to 40 wt %, and the gel component consisted of the component polymers as shown by infrared spectroscopy studies. The thermogravimetric analysis study indicated that the inclusion of a small amount of PVAc gives rise to a marked stabilization effect on the thermal stability. The PMMA/PVAc blends exhibited increased notched impact properties with the inclusion of 5 wt % PVAc. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 675–684, 1998  相似文献
