Hydrogels of N‐vinylimidazole and sodium styrenesulfonate were synthesized by radical crosslinking copolymerization. Transient swelling measurements in water, at room temperature, reveal an unusual behavior. For some gel compositions, the swelling time dependency is about a δ function: dry hydrogel pellets swell up readily to reach a high degree of swelling and, spontaneously, they deswell to collapse. Such peculiarity was interpreted in terms of several competing events in the swelling mechanism: water diffusion toward the gel, chain disentanglement, sodium–proton interchange through the gel–external bath boundary, approaching of chains to allow interaction of sulfonate groups with neighboring protonated imidazole moieties and diffusion of water outside the gel. The results of cyclic swelling–deswelling following abrupt changes of composition in the external bath, from water to sodium hydroxide solution, support that mechanism. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermoresponsive hydrogels based on N‐isopropylacrylamide and N‐vinylimidazole were synthesized, and their swelling–deswelling behavior was studied as a function of the total monomer concentration. For copolymeric structures with better thermoresponsive properties with respect to poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐N‐vinylimidazole) hydrogels, these hydrogels were protonated with HCl and HNO3, and the copolymer behaviors were compared with those of the unprotonated hydrogels. The temperature was changed from 4 to 70°C at fixed pHs and total ionic strengths. The equilibrium swelling ratio, dynamic swelling ratio, and dynamic deswelling ratio were evaluated for all the hydrogels. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94: 1619–1624, 2004 相似文献

A series of pH‐thermoreversible hydrogels that exhibited volume phase transition was synthesized by various molar ratios of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), acrylamide (AAm), and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). The influence of environmental conditions such as temperature and pH value on the swelling behavior of these copolymeric gels was investigated. Results showed that the hydrogels exhibited different equilibrium swelling ratios in different pH solutions. Amide groups could be hydrolyzed to form negatively charged carboxylate ion groups in their hydrophilic polymeric network in response to an external pH variation. The pH sensitivities of these gels also depended on the AAm content in the copolymeric gels; thus the greater the AAm content, the higher the pH sensitivity. These hydrogels, based on a temperature‐sensitive hydrogel, demonstrated a significant change of equilibrium swelling in aqueous media between a highly solvated, swollen gel state and a dehydrated network response to small variations of temperature. pH‐thermoreversible hydrogels were used for a study of the release of a model drug, caffeine, with changes in temperature. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) monomer and N,N‐methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAAm) crosslinker. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels in deionized water was investigated as a function of temperature and MBAAm content. The results indicated that the swelling behavior and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels were affected by the amount of MBAAm content. The average molecular mass between crosslinks and polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. The swelling variations were explained according to swelling theory based on the hydrogel chemical structure. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was also investigated as a function of temperature in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). In deionized water, the hydrogels showed a discontinuous volume phase transition at 32°C. In SDS and DTAB solutions, the equilibrium swelling ratio and the volume phase transition temperature (lower critical solution temperature) of the hydrogels increased, which is ascribed to the conversion of nonionic PNIPA hydrogel into polyelectrolyte hydrogels because of binding of surfactant molecules through the hydrophobic interaction. Additionally, the amount of free SDS and DTAB ions was measured at different temperatures by a conductometric method; it was found that the electric conductivity of the PNIPA–surfactant systems depended strongly on both the type and concentration of surfactant solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The degree of swelling (S) of crosslinked polymers depends on several variables whose individual contributions are difficult to be distinguished. The aim of this work is to determine the contributions of the morphology to S, discriminating them from the effect of the crosslinking density. Under usual conditions of synthesis, these two characteristics vary simultaneously but here, several samples of chemically crosslinked poly(N‐vinylimidazole) having the same permanent crosslinking density (determined by DSC) and different porous morphologies (determined by SEM) were prepared. It was thus found that the variation of S with porosity, keeping constant the rest of variables, is strongly solvent dependent. Swelling in methanol is almost constant whereas for ethanol, deionized water, and aqueous HCl solutions, S depends on morphological features in a different way for each medium. It was concluded that S increases with inherent porosity and solvent effects arise from the counterbalance of such increment with the dependence of the polymer‐solvent interaction parameter on the polymer volume fraction. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study the poly(acrylamide‐co‐maleic acid) hydrogels containing small amounts of maleic acid have been synthesized, and the effect of pH, ionic strength, and nature of counterions on the equilibrium water uptake has been investigated. The incorporation of small amount of maleic acid results in the transition of swelling mechanism from Fickian to non‐Fickian. The equilibrium mass swelling has been found to increase with pH of the swelling medium while increase in ionic strength causes a decrease in the swelling. The amount of maleic acid present in the hydrogel affects the swelling behavior in rather an unusual way. With lower acid contents, the equilibrium mass swelling increases while higher concentrations of maleic acid cause a decrease in the degree of swelling. The hydrogels have been found to undergo a number of swelling–deswelling cycles when pH of the swelling medium changes from 8.0 to 2.0. Hydrogels require more time to deswell compared to the time required for swelling, which has been explained on the basis of the fact that gels follow different mechanisms for the two processes. Various swelling parameters such as equilibrium mass swelling, diffusion coefficient, intrinsic diffusion coefficient, swelling exponent, etc., have been evaluated. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide‐co‐sodium acrylate) [poly(NIPAM‐co‐SA)] hydrogels were modified with three different kind of surfactants (cationic, anionic, and nonionic) to study the effect on the swelling properties. The structural variation of the surfactant‐modified hydrogels was investigated in detail. The interaction between the surfactants and the hydrogel varies and strictly depends on the surfactant type. The variation in thermal stability of the modified surfactant hydrogels was investigated and compared with unmodified hydrogel. Further, the hydrogel swelling/diffusion kinetic parameters were investigated and diffusion of water into hydrogel was found to be of the non‐Fickian transport mechanism. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric ligand exchangers (PLE) are generally composed of a crosslinked hosting resin that can firmly hold a transition metal ion which can act as terminal functional groups. In this study, poly(N‐vinylimidazole) (PVIm) hydrogels were synthesized by free radical polymerization/crosslinking of N‐vinylimidazole in aqueous solution. Swelling behavior of PVIm hydrogels was investigated and the gel with minimum amount of crosslinking agent, hence showing maximum swelling was selected as the optimum gel system for further studies. To prepare the corresponding PLE for the removal of phosphate, PVIm hydrogels were loaded with Cu(II) ions. Copper loading capacity of PLE was determined to be 5 mmol of Cu(II)/g of dry gel. For removal of phosphate, adsorption experiments were performed in batch mode at different pH (3–9) and phosphate concentrations. It was found that phosphate adsorption capacity did not change significantly within this pH range. The effect of initial concentration of phosphate on the adsorption behavior of PLE was determined for 10 different phosphate concentrations (0.1–1000 mg/L) at pH 7. NaCl solution was used for regeneration of phosphate adsorbed Cu(II) loaded PVIm hydrogels with 100% regeneration efficiency. The new PLE showed high affinity for phosphate; the highest uptake was found to be 218 mg/g dry PLE from 1000 mg/L phosphate solution. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011 相似文献

A series of N‐isopropylacrylamide/3‐methyl‐1‐vinylimidazolium iodide (NIPAAm/MVI) copolymer gels were prepared from the various molar ratios of NIPAAm, cationic monomer MVI, and N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (NMBA) in this study. The influence of the amount of MVI in the copolymer gels on the swelling behaviors was investigated in various aqueous saline solutions. Results showed that the swelling ratios (SRs) of copolymer gels were significantly greater than those of NIPAAm homopolymer gels, and the higher the MVI content, the higher the volume phase transition temperature. The SRs for the NIPAAm/MVI copolymer gels decreased with an increase of the salt concentration. In various saline solutions, results showed that the effect of divalent ions on the SR was greater than that of monovalent ions for these hydrogels. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. BACKGROUND: Stimuli‐responsive hydrogels are typically obtained from non‐biodegradable monomers. The use of biodegradable crosslinkers can overcome this limitation. In this context, the main aim of this work was to use modified polycaprolactone as a crosslinker in the preparation of pH‐responsive hydrogels based on N‐isopropylacrylamide and methacrylic acid to give poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(methacrylic acid)] (P(N‐iPAAm‐co‐MAA)). RESULTS: Poly(caprolactone) dimethacrylate macromonomer was synthesized and successfully employed as crosslinker with various ratios in the synthesis of well‐known pH‐responsive hydrogels of P(N‐iPAAm‐co‐MAA). The swelling properties of these degradable hydrogels were investigated. They practically do not swell at pH = 2, but exhibit a very high swelling capacity in distilled water and in solutions of pH = 7. In addition, degradation studies at pH = 12 showed that the hydrolysis of the ester groups in the polycaprolactone chains produces, after a relatively short time, the total solubilization of the polymer chains. CONCLUSION: The hydrogels under study have certain characteristics that could make them good candidates for use as matrices in controlled drug delivery. On the one hand, they do not swell in acid pH solution (stomach conditions) but they swell extensively at neutral pH. On the other hand, they became rapidly water soluble following degradation. The poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide‐co‐methoxy polyethyleneglycol monomethacrylate, NIPAM‐co‐MPEG) with different length of ethylene oxide (EO) were synthesized from their monomers, NIPAM and MPEGs. The numbers of repeating units of EO were 6, 10, 24, and 46. The chemical structure and mole ratio of the monomers was determined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. The d‐spacing increased with the number of EO and the values of the copolymers were in the range of 0.437–0.452 nm. The lower critical solution temperature of the poly(NIPAM‐co‐MPEG) shifted to higher temperature as the number of EO and the amount of MPEG increased. The change of chemical shift for methoxy proton in MPEG exhibited a larger than those of the other protons of the poly(NIPAM‐co10?2MPEG). Activation energy (Ea) for methoxy proton in MPEG showed a larger value than that of the methyl proton in NIPAM. These NMR results indicate the fact that more significant conformational transformations occur in the methoxy group through the phase separation than in the methyl group in NIPAM. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: In this study, poly[(N‐vinylimidazole)‐co‐(maleic acid)] (poly(VIm/MA)) hydrogels were prepared by γ‐irradiation of ternary mixtures of N‐vinylimidazole–maleic acid–water using a 60Co γ‐source. Spectroscopic and thermal analyses of these hydrogels as a function of protonation showed that the results are consistent with the existence of an H‐bridged complex when the imidazole rings are partially protonated. Finally, the efficiency and binding trends of Cu2+, Co2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions with both protonated and unprotonated poly(VIm/MA) hydrogels were determined. RESULTS: Gelation of 90% was reached at around 180 kGy dose at the end of irradiation. The poly(VIm/MA) hydrogels synthesized were further protonated in HCl solutions with different concentrations. Hydrogels originally showed 450% volumetric swelling; this ratio reached 1900% after protonation at pH = 5.0. Fourier transform infrared spectral changes in the +N? H stretching region (3200–3600 and 1173 cm?1) and the ring mode deformation at 915 cm?1 are consistent with the formation of an H‐bridged complex between the protonated and unprotonated imidazole rings upon partial protonation. Similar changes were obtained from NMR spectra of both the protonated and unprotonated forms of the hydrogels. CONCLUSION: Protonated and unprotonated hydrogels have been used in heavy metal ion adsorption studies for environmental purposes. Adsorption decreased with decreasing pH value due to the protonation of the VIm ring. The adsorption of Me2+ ions decreased in the order Cu2+ > Co2+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+, which is related to the complexation stability as well as the ionic radius of the metal ions. These results show that P(VIm/MA) hydrogels can be used efficiently to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. However, the protonated form is a bad choice for heavy metal ion adsorption due to electrostatic repulsion forces; it can nevertheless be assumed to be a good choice for anion adsorption from environmental waste water systems. The complexation of copper (Cu2+), cobalt (Co2+), and cadmium (Cd2+) ions with poly(N‐vinylimidazole) (PVIm) and its protonated form in aqueous solution was studied conductometrically and viscometrically. From the conductometric and viscometric curves, it was found that four imidazole units were coordinated with one metal ion in the complex systems. Both studies showed that the complex formation tendency decreased in the following order: Cu2+ > Co2+ > Cd2+. Complex properties of metal ions with imidazole group were explained by referring to Pearson's treatment, as hard and soft acids and bases. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We prepared submicron‐sized N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPA)–N‐cyanomethyl acrylamide (NCMA) copolymer gel particles by precipitation polymerization. Volume phase transition behaviors of gel particles with various compositions and crosslinking density were observed by using photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). The experimental data showed that both the volume transition temperature and the swelling ratio of copolymer gel particles were varied with the mole ratio of NCMA and NIPA. Hydrogels of N‐isopropylacrylamide and itaconic acid were synthesized with different monomer ratios and with two crosslinking agent concentrations. The different xerogels were immersed in water and the swelling process was conducted up to equilibrium conditions at two temperatures (22 and 37°C). These temperatures are lower and higher than the transition temperature shown by PNIPA hydrogels. The mechanical properties of the different solvated hydrogels were examined by oscillatory shear measurements at 22 and 37°C. The copolymer volume fraction and the elastic storage modulus of the hydrogels decreased as the itaconic acid percentage in the copolymer increased. This behavior was attributed to the higher hydrophilic character of the itaconic acid comonomer. Effective crosslinking density, molar mass between crosslinks, and the polymer–solvent interaction parameter were determined from the experimental values of the elastic storage moduli and the copolymer volume fractions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A hydrogel incorporating the hydrophilic polymer poly(ethylene glycol) and a copolymer of acrylamide and styrene was synthesized, and the dynamics of the water‐sorption process were studied. The effects of the composition of the hydrogel and the temperature of the swelling medium were investigated with respect to the water‐sorption characteristics of the hydrogel, and the kinetic parameters, including the swelling exponent and diffusion constant, were evaluated. The hydrogel was also judged for the antithrombogenic property of its surface. The experimental findings were explained on the basis of the core–shell polymeric structure of the hydrogel. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 85: 1419–1428, 2002 相似文献

Caption of Hg(II) from acid aqueous solution by immersed poly(N‐vinylimidazole) hydrogel particles was studied as a function of pH, counterion, and cation concentration. Fitting parameters to several sorption isotherms have been determined. Their values depend mostly on pH and less, on temperature and counterion, and suggest a large affinity of imidazole groups in the gel and mercury cations. Practically total removal (94.4%) of Hg(II) is achieved at pH = 2, with 10 g of dry gel per liter of solution, when cation concentration was as large as 15,000 ppm (0.075 M). Polymer protonation decreases about fourfold the cation affinity, supporting competitive protonation‐complexation mechanisms. By its side, metal uptake decreases polymer protonation. Thermal stability of loaded gels decreases with respect to metal free hydrogels. Scanning electron micrographs reveal no changes in the gel morphology upon cation binding, but Tg increases significantly with the Hg(II) content of loaded gels and swelling decreases moderately, indicating the role of the cation as ionic crosslinker. Practically total elution of Hg(II) is achieved with 1 M HNO3 in consecutive loading‐elution cycles. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 79: 1467–1475, 2001 相似文献

Macroporous superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs) composed of acrylamide (AAm) and sodium methacrylate (NMA) were prepared by aqueous solution polymerization in the presence of a glucose solution. Their swelling capacity was investigated as a function of the concentrations of the glucose solution, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and activator. The porosity of the poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) superabsorbent hydrogels was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy. The SAHs were characterized by IR spectroscopy. To estimate the effect on the swelling behavior, three types of crosslinkers were employed: N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide, 1,4‐butanediol diacrylate, and diallyl phthalate. Network structural parameters such as initial swelling rate, swelling rate constant, and maximum equilibrium swelling were evaluated by water absorption measurement. The equilibrium water content (EWC%) of the AAm–NMA macroporous SAHs was found to be in the range of 93.31–99.68, indicating that these SAHs may have applications as biomaterials in the medicinal, pharmaceutical, and veterinary fields. Most of the SAHs prepared in this investigation followed non‐Fickian‐type diffusion, and few followed a case II– or super–case II‐type diffusion. The diffusion coefficients of these macroporous SAHs were investigated. Further, the swelling behavior of these SAHs also was investigated at different pHs and in different salt solutions and simulated biological fluids. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) poly(AAm‐co‐SMA) were prepared by the semi IPN method. These IPN hydrogels were prepared by polymerizing aqueous solution of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate, using ammonium persulphate/N,N,N1,N1‐tetramethylethylenediamine (APS/TMEDA) initiating system and N,N1‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker in the presence of a host polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol). The influence of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of PVA, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and reaction temperature, on the swelling behavior of these IPNs was investigated in detail. The results showed that the IPN hydrogels exhibited different swelling behavior as the reaction conditions varied. To verify the structural difference in the IPN hydrogels, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the morphological changes in the IPN as the concentration of crosslinker varied. In addition to MBA, two other crosslinkers were also employed in the preparation of IPNs to illustrate the difference in their swelling phenomena. The swelling kinetics, equilibrium water content, and water transport mechanism of all the IPN hydrogels were investigated. IPN hydrogels being ionic in nature, the swelling behavior was significantly affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, ionic strength, and pH of the swelling medium. Further, their swelling behavior was also examined in different physiological bio‐fluids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 302–314, 2005 相似文献

Poly(acrylamide‐co‐2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid) hydrogels were synthesized using gamma‐radiation‐initiated polymerization. The progress of copolymerization and crosslinking was observed by viscosity measurement on reaction mixtures subjected to varying radiation doses. The copolymer gels were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The swelling behavior and other properties of the gels were found to be very similar to those of poly(acrylamide‐co‐2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid) hydrogels synthesized using conventional free‐radical initiation in the presence of crosslinkers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
