Abstract Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of a period of training in the use of the turtle graphics aspects of LOGO on both attitudes towards computers and the learning of BASIC and statistics. A group of 15 subjects spent 10 hours learning LOGO . Their performance on subsequent learning of BASIC was significantly better than that of a control group, but no differences were found in attitudes towards computers or in the learning of statistics.  相似文献

Abstract  This paper considers some results of a study designed to investigate the kinds of mathematical activity undertaken by children (aged between 8 and 11) as they learned to program in LOGO. A model of learning modes is proposed, which attempts to describe the ways in which children used and acquired understanding of the programming/mathematical concepts involved. The remainder of the paper is concerned with discussing the validity and limitations of the model, and its implications for further research and curriculum development.  相似文献

Abstract Previous research in the USA suggests that teachers use mainly drill and practice software programs to support reading problems for pupils with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs). More recently, holistic and active learning approaches have led to wider use of content free software. A small scale study was undertaken to explore teacher's use of software in supporting pupils' learning. The approach used questionnaires for 56 teachers and interviews for nine of those teachers who had responded. The teaching approach used by teachers was related to the type of software that they used (64 programs were identified). The software was categorised into 'drill and practice' and framework groups. The teachers who used whole book approaches to teaching preferred framework software. Teachers using structured approaches made more use of drill and practice software but also used framework software.  相似文献

Abstract  This paper is derived from the LOGO Maths Project's investigation of the potential of LOGO in the secondary school mathematics classroom (1983–1986). The main focus of the work has been to discover whether and under what conditions the computer language LOGO can be used as an aid to pupils' learning and thinking in mathematics. Longitudinal case studies were undertaken for four pairs of pupils throughout the three years of the project. In addition the research was extended for two years into another eight schools. This paper presents the findings concerned with peer collaboration and the role of the teacher in the LOGO environment. It describes how LOGO work can be used to gain insights into pupils' conceptions of mathematical ideas. It also makes reference to gender issues in the wider context of computer use in the United Kingdom.  相似文献

An Intel 8035 microcomputer-based system which interfaces a LOGO turtle robot drawing device to an asynchronous serial communications line is described. The system was required to receive and interpret commands and to control the turtle wheels, pen mechanism and hooter in obedience to commands. The use of a microcomputer made it possible to simplify the turtle mechanism, improve the drawing accuracy and minimize the number of components used in the interface.  相似文献

Abstract  The present study analysed the strategies and interactions of 60 7-year-old children working on LOGO tasks in gender pairs (girls, boys and boy/ girls). The results revealed that initially there were significant differences on some performance variables, based on gender, in one of the tasks. However, these disappeared when the task was changed to one with a focus on accuracy. By the end of the study differences in performance were found to be associated with the application of higher order strategies for problem-solving. The research investigated the nature of the early differences between the groups by examining the strategies and interactions of the pairs of children. The study highlights the importance of considering both the type of task and performance over a reasonable period of time when describing the nature and extent of young children's learning when problem solving in a novel environment.  相似文献

Control dependence forms the basis for many program analyses, such as program slicing. Recent work on control dependence analysis has led to new definitions of dependence that can allow for reactive programs with their necessarily non-terminating computations. One important such definition is the definition of Weak Order Dependence, which was introduced to generalize classical control dependence for a Control Flow Graph (CFG) without end nodes. In this paper we show that for a CFG where all nodes are reachable from each other, weak order dependence can be expressed in terms of traditional control dependence where one node has been converted into an end node.  相似文献

Online courses have become commonplace at many institutions of higher education. While the popularity on online courses is growing, there are still many questions regarding the effectiveness of such courses in facilitating learning outcomes. Using theories from mass communication and education, we designed an online lecture which employed a 2 (modality) × 2 (clarity) between-subjects factorial design to better understand how variations in the mode (text only; audio and text) and structure/clarity (high clarity; low clarity) of information impacted feelings of instructor closeness, credibility, and perceived and actual learning. Results indicated that online lectures presented in a multimodal format were better at facilitating positive student experiences with instructors, as well as perceived and actual learning than lectures that contained only one mode of information. Implications of these findings are discussed with a specific focus on instructional design and technology.  相似文献

Abstract This paper draws on recent research which includes the JITOL project, funded through the EC DELTA programme, and a current ESRC project on teachers' professional culture. It identifies a typology of contexts in which professional learning might take place. This typology was a product of the evaluation of the JITOL project and seeks to identify the learning which grows out of occupational environments. It problemetises the notion of 'professional', arguing that the term refers to a set of values which frame occupational practice and thus learning. Finally, it offers an approach which might form the basis of research into professional learning.  相似文献
