Typical digital video search is based on queries involving a single shot. We generalize this problem by allowing queries that involve a video clip (say, a 10-s video segment). We propose two schemes: (i) retrieval based on key frames follows the traditional approach of identifying shots, computing key frames from a video, and then extracting image features around the key frames. For each key frame in the query, a similarity value (using color, texture, and motion) is obtained with respect to the key frames in the database video. Consecutive key frames in the database video that are highly similar to the query key frames are then used to generate the set of retrieved video clips. (ii) In retrieval using sub-sampled frames, we uniformly sub-sample the query clip as well as the database video. Retrieval is based on matching color and texture features of the sub-sampled frames. Initial experiments on two video databases (basketball video with approximately 16,000 frames and a CNN news video with approximately 20,000 frames) show promising results. Additional experiments using segments from one basketball video as query and a different basketball video as the database show the effectiveness of feature representation and matching schemes.  相似文献

We present a scheme for reliable and accurate surface reconstruction from stereoscopic images containing only fine texture and no stable high-level features. Partial shape information is used to improve surface computation: first by fitting an approximate, global, parametric model, and then by refining this model via local correspondence processes. This scheme eliminates the window size selection problem in existing area-based stereo correspondence schemes. These ideas are integrated in a practical vision system that is being used by environmental scientists to study wind erosion of bulk material such as coal ore being transported in open rail cars. For admission control in real-time multimedia systems, buffer space, disk bandwidth and network bandwidth must be considered. The CBR-based mechanisms do not use system resources effectively, since media data is usually encoded with VBR compression techniques. We propose an admission control mechanism based on a VBR data model that has a dynamic period length. In our mechanism, the period can be adaptively changed to maximize the performance, considering both disk bandwidth and buffer space. To compare the performance, extensive simulations are conducted on RR, SCAN, and GSS schemes which have the dynamic period length and the static period length.  相似文献

  We have discovered a class of fractal functions that are differentiable. Fractal interpolation functions have been used for over a decade to generate rough functions passing through a set of given points. The integral of a fractal interpolation function remains a fractal interpolation function, and this new fractal interpolation function is differentiable. Tensor products of pairs of these fractal functions form fractal surfaces with a well-defined tangent plane. We use this surface normal to shade fractal surfaces, and demonstrate its use with renderings of fractal mirrors.  相似文献

Many phenomena in nature and engineering happen simultaneously on rather diverse spatial and temporal scales. In other words, they exhibit a multi-scale character. A special numerical multilevel technique associated with a particular hierarchical data structure is adaptive mesh refinement (AMR). This scheme achieves locally very high spatial and temporal resolutions. Due to its popularity, many scientists are in need of interactive visualization tools for AMR data. In this article, we present a 3D texture-based volume-rendering algorithm for AMR data that directly utilizes the hierarchical structure. Thereby fast rendering performance is achieved even for high-resolution data sets. To avoid multiple rendering of regions that are covered by grids of different levels of resolution, we propose a space partitioning scheme to decompose the volume into axis-aligned regions of equal-sized cells. The Enhanced Pay-Per-View (EPPV) model for providing continuous-media services associates with each continuous-media clip a display frequency that depends on the clip's popularity. The aim is to increase the number of clients that can be serviced concurrently beyond the capacity limitations of available resources, while guaranteeing a constraint on the response time. This is achieved by sharing periodic continuous-media streams among multiple clients. The EPPV model offers a number of advantages over other data-sharing schemes (e.g., batching), which make it more attractive to large-scale service providers. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive study of the resource-scheduling problems associated with supporting EPPV for continuous-media clips with (possibly) different display rates, frequencies, and lengths. Our main objective is to maximize the amount of disk bandwidth that is effectively scheduled under the given data layout and storage constraints. Our formulation gives rise to -hard combinatorial optimization problems that fall within the realm of hard real-time scheduling theory. Given the intractability of the problems, we propose novel heuristic solutions with polynomial-time complexity. We also present preliminary experimental results for the average case behavior of the proposed scheduling schemes and examine how they compare to each other under different workloads. A major contribution of our work is the introduction of a robust scheduling framework that, we believe, can provide solutions for a variety of realistic EPPV resource-scheduling scenarios, as well as any scheduling problem involving regular, periodic use of a shared resource. In this paper, we explore image reconstruction by natural neighbour interpolation from irregularly spaced samples. We sample the image irregularly with techniques based on the Laplacian or the derivative in the direction of the gradient. Local coordinates based on the Voronoi diagram are used in natural neighbour interpolation to quantify the “neighbourliness” of data sites. Then we use natural neighbour interpolation in order to reconstruct the image. The main result is that the image quality is always very good in the case of the sampling techniques based on the Laplacian.  相似文献

The promise of a broadband integrated service digital network has led to the design of mechanisms for efficient transport of real-time compressed video in packet switching networks. We examine feedback control for video transport in ATM networks where the available feedback is a single bit of information carried in the cell header. We investigate the performance of three single-bit schemes for source rate adaptation. Two were originally for congestion control of bursty data traffic and are modified to control video traffic. The third scheme conveys more information about the state of queue(s) at the bottleneck. The simulation results show that all three schemes for feedback control of VBR video streams work remarkably well. During severe network congestion, the signal quality degrades gracefully, but not uniformly across all connections. Based on insights from the initial simulations, we propose a scheme to improve the fairness of service and demonstrate its effectiveness.  相似文献

In a video-on-demand (VOD) environment, batching requests for the same video to share a common video stream can lead to significant improvement in throughput. Using the wait tolerance characteristic that is commonly observed in viewers behavior, we introduce a new paradigm for scheduling in VOD systems. We propose and analyze two classes of scheduling schemes: the Max_Batch and Min_Idle schemes that provide two alternative ways for using a given stream capacity for effective batching. In making a video selection, the proposed schemes take into consideration the next stream completion time, as well as the viewer wait tolerance. We compared the proposed schemes with the two previously studied schemes: (1) first-come-first-served (FCFS) that schedules the video with the longest waiting request and (2) the maximum queue length (MQL) scheme that selects the video with the maximum number of waiting requests. We show through simulations that the proposed schemes substantially outperform FCFS and MQL in reducing the viewer turn-away probability, while maintaining a small average response time. In terms of system resources, we show that, by exploiting the viewers wait tolerance, the proposed schemes can significantly reduce the server capacity required for achieving a given level of throughput and turn-away probability as compared to the FCFS and MQL. Furthermore, our study shows that an aggressive use of the viewer wait tolerance for batching may not yield the best strategy, and that other factors, such as the resulting response time, fairness, and loss of viewers, should be taken into account.  相似文献

NeTra: A toolbox for navigating large image databases   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
We present here an implementation of NeTra, a prototype image retrieval system that uses color, texture, shape and spatial location information in segmented image regions to search and retrieve similar regions from the database. A distinguishing aspect of this system is its incorporation of a robust automated image segmentation algorithm that allows object- or region-based search. Image segmentation significantly improves the quality of image retrieval when images contain multiple complex objects. Images are segmented into homogeneous regions at the time of ingest into the database, and image attributes that represent each of these regions are computed. In addition to image segmentation, other important components of the system include an efficient color representation, and indexing of color, texture, and shape features for fast search and retrieval. This representation allows the user to compose interesting queries such as “retrieve all images that contain regions that have the color of object A, texture of object B, shape of object C, and lie in the upper of the image”, where the individual objects could be regions belonging to different images. Multimedia data, especially continuous media including video and audio objects, represent a rich and natural stimulus for humans, but require large amount of storage capacity and real-time processing. In this paper, we describe how to organize video data efficiently on multiple disks in order to support arbitrary-rate playback requested by different users independently. Our approach is to segment and decluster video objects and to place the segments in multiple disks using a restricted round-robin scheme, called prime round-robin (PRR). Its placement scheme provides uniform load balance of disks for arbitrary retrieval rate as well as normal playback, since it eliminates hot spots. Moreover, it does not require any additional disk bandwidth to support VCR-like operations such as fast-forward and rewind. We have studied the various effects of placement and retrieval schemes in a storage server by simulation. The results show that PRR offers even disk accesses, and the failure in reading segment by deadline occurs only at the beginning of new operations. In addition, the number of users admitted is not decreased, regardless of arbitrary-rate playback requests.  相似文献

A new general theory about restoration of network paths is first introduced. The theory pertains to restoration of shortest paths in a network following failure, e.g., we prove that a shortest path in a network after removing k edges is the concatenation of at most k+1 shortest paths in the original network. The theory is then combined with efficient path concatenation techniques in MPLS (multi-protocol label switching), to achieve powerful schemes for restoration in MPLS based networks. We thus transform MPLS into a flexible and robust method for forwarding packets in a network. Finally, the different schemes suggested are evaluated experimentally on three large networks (a large ISP, the AS graph of the Internet, and the full Internet topology). These experiments demonstrate that the restoration schemes perform well in actual topologies. Although 3D texture-based volume rendering guarantees image quality almost interactively, it is difficult to maintain an interactive rate when the technique has to be exploited on large datasets. In this paper, we propose a new texture memory representation and a management policy that substitute the classical one-texel per voxel approach for a hierarchical approach. The hierarchical approach benefits nearly homogeneous regions and regions of lower interest. The proposed algorithm is based on a simple traversal of the octree representation of the volume data. Driven by a user-defined image quality, defined as a combination of data homogeneity and importance, a set of octree nodes (the cut) is selected to be rendered. The degree of accuracy applied for the representation of each one of the nodes of the cut in the texture memory is set independently according to the user-defined parameters. The variable resolution texture model obtained reduces the texture memory size and thus texture swapping, improving rendering speed.  相似文献

inverse subdivision algorithms , with linear time and space complexity, to detect and reconstruct uniform Loop, Catmull–Clark, and Doo–Sabin subdivision structure in irregular triangular, quadrilateral, and polygonal meshes. We consider two main applications for these algorithms. The first one is to enable interactive modeling systems that support uniform subdivision surfaces to use popular interchange file formats which do not preserve the subdivision structure, such as VRML, without loss of information. The second application is to improve the compression efficiency of existing lossless connectivity compression schemes, by optimally compressing meshes with Loop subdivision connectivity. Our Loop inverse subdivision algorithm is based on global connectivity properties of the covering mesh, a concept motivated by the covering surface from Algebraic Topology. Although the same approach can be used for other subdivision schemes, such as Catmull–Clark, we present a Catmull–Clark inverse subdivision algorithm based on a much simpler graph-coloring algorithm and a Doo–Sabin inverse subdivision algorithm based on properties of the dual mesh. Video services are likely to dominate the traffic in future broadband networks. Most of these services will be provided by large- scale public-access video servers. Research to date has shown that disk arrays are a promising technology for providing the storage and throughput required to serve many independent video streams to a large customer population. Large disk arrays, however, are susceptible to disk failures which can greatly affect their reliability. In this paper, we discuss suitable redundancy mechanisms to increase the reliability of disk arrays and compare the performance of the RAID-3 and RAID-5 redundancy schemes. We use cost and performability analyses to rigorously compare the two schemes over a variety of conditions. Accurate cost models are developed and Markov reward models (with time-dependent reward structures) are developed and used to give insight into the tradeoffs between system cost and revenue earning potential. The paper concludes that for large-scale video servers, coarse-grained striping in a RAID-5 style of disk array is most cost effective.  相似文献

Periodic broadcasting can be used to support near-video-on-demand for popular videos. For a given bandwidth allocation, pyramid broadcasting schemes substantially reduce the viewer latency (waiting) time compared to conventional broadcasting schemes. Nevertheless, such pyramid schemes typically have substantial storage requirements at the client end, and this results in set-top boxes needing disks with high transfer rate capabilities. In this paper, we present a permutation-based pyramid scheme in which the storage requirements and disk transfer rates are greatly reduced, and yet the viewer latency is also smaller. Under the proposed approach, each video is partitioned into contiguous segments of geometrically increasing sizes, and each segment is further divided into blocks, where a block is the basic unit of transmission. As in the original pyramid scheme, frequencies of transmission for the different segments of a video vary in a manner inversely proportional to their size. Instead of transmitting the blocks in each segment in sequential order, the proposed scheme transmits these blocks in a prespecified cyclic permutation to save on storage requirements in the client end. Performance analyses are provided to quantify the benefits of the new scheme.  相似文献

Many real-time database applications arise in electronic financial services, safety-critical installations and military systems where enforcing security is crucial to the success of the enterprise. We investigate here the performance implications, in terms of killed transactions, of guaranteeing multi-level secrecy in a real-time database system supporting applications with firm deadlines. In particular, we focus on the buffer management aspects of this issue. Our main contributions are the following. First, we identify the importance and difficulties of providing secure buffer management in the real-time database environment. Second, we present SABRE, a novel buffer management algorithm that provides covert-channel-free security. SABRE employs a fully dynamic one-copy allocation policy for efficient usage of buffer resources. It also incorporates several optimizations for reducing the overall number of killed transactions and for decreasing the unfairness in the distribution of killed transactions across security levels. Third, using a detailed simulation model, the real-time performance of SABRE is evaluated against unsecure conventional and real-time buffer management policies for a variety of security-classified transaction workloads and system configurations. Our experiments show that SABRE provides security with only a modest drop in real-time performance. Finally, we evaluate SABRE's performance when augmented with the GUARD adaptive admission control policy. Our experiments show that this combination provides close to ideal fairness for real-time applications that can tolerate covert-channel bandwidths of up to one bit per second (a limit specified in military standards). In this paper, we have proposed efficient admission control algorithms for multimedia storage servers that are providers of variable-bit-rate media streams. The proposed schemes are based on a slicing technique and use aggressive methods for admission control. We have developed two types of admission control schemes: Future-Max (FM) and Interval Estimation (IE). The FM algorithm uses the maximum bandwidth requirement of the future to estimate the bandwidth requirement. The IE algorithm defines a class of admission control schemes that use a combination of the maximum and average bandwidths within each interval to estimate the bandwidth requirement of the interval. The performance evaluations done through simulations show that the server utilization is improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Furthermore, the quality of service is also improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Several results depicting the trade-off between the implementation complexity, the desired accuracy, the number of accepted requests, and the quality of service are presented.  相似文献

We present efficient schemes for scheduling the delivery of variable-bit-rate MPEG-compressed video with stringent quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Video scheduling is being used to improve bandwidth allocation at a video server that uses statistical multiplexing to aggregate video streams prior to transporting them over a network. A video stream is modeled using a traffic envelope that provides a deterministic time-varying bound on the bit rate. Because of the periodicity in which frame types in an MPEG stream are typically generated, a simple traffic envelope can be constructed using only five parameters. Using the traffic-envelope model, we show that video sources can be statistically multiplexed with an effective bandwidth that is often less than the source peak rate. Bandwidth gain is achieved without sacrificing the stringency of the requested QoS. The effective bandwidth depends on the arrangement of the multiplexed streams, which is a measure of the lag between the GOP periods of various streams. For homogeneous streams, we give an optimal scheduling scheme for video sources at a video-on-demand server that results in the minimum effective bandwidth. For heterogeneous sources, a sub-optimal scheduling scheme is given, which achieves acceptable bandwidth gain. Numerical examples based on traces of MPEG-coded movies are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of our schemes.  相似文献
