Environmental concerns and limited resource of petroleum fuels have caused interests in the development of alternative fuels for internal combustion (IC) engines. For diesel engines, alcohols are receiving increasing attention because they are oxygenated and renewable fuels. Therefore, in this study, the effect of injection timing on the exhaust emissions of a single cylinder, naturally aspirated, four-stroke, direct injection diesel engine has been experimentally investigated by using methanol-blended diesel fuel from 0% to 15% with an increment of 5%. The tests were conducted for three different injection timings (15°, 20° and 25 °CA BTDC) at four different engine loads (5 Nm, 10 Nm, 15 Nm, 20 Nm) at 2200 rpm. The experimental test results showed that Bsfc, NOx and CO2 emissions increased as BTE, smoke opacity, CO and UHC emissions decreased with increasing amount of methanol in the fuel mixture. When compared the results to those of original injection timing, NOx and CO2 emissions decreased, smoke opacity, UHC and CO emissions increased for the retarded injection timing (15 °CA BTDC). On the other hand, with the advanced injection timing (25 °CA BTDC), decreasing smoke opacity, UHC and CO emissions diminished, and NOx and CO2 emissions boosted at all test conditions. In terms of Bsfc and BTE, retarded and advanced injection timings gave negative results for all fuel blends in all engine loads.  相似文献

Research into novel internal combustion engines requires consideration of the diversity in future fuels in an attempt to reduce drastically CO2 emissions from vehicles and promote energy sustainability. Hydrogen has been proposed as a possible fuel for future internal combustion engines and can be produced from renewable sources. Hydrogen’s wide flammability range allows higher engine efficiency than conventional fuels with both reduced toxic emissions and no CO2 gases. Most previous work on hydrogen engines has focused on spark-ignition operation. The current paper presents results from an optical study of controlled autoignition (or homogeneous charge compression ignition) of hydrogen in an engine of latest spark-ignition pentroof combustion chamber geometry with direct injection of hydrogen (100 bar). This was achieved by a combination of inlet air preheating in the range 200–400 °C and residual gas recirculated internally by negative valve overlap. Hydrogen fuelling was set to various values of equivalence ratio, typically in the range ? = 0.40–0.63. Crank-angle resolved flame chemiluminescence images were acquired for a series of consecutive cycles at 1000 RPM in order to calculate in-cylinder rates of flame expansion and motion. Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) of OH was also applied to record more detailed features of the autoignition pattern. Single and double (i.e. ‘split’ per cycle) hydrogen injection strategies were employed in order to identify the effect of mixture preparation on autoignition’s timing and spatial development. An attempt was also made to review relevant in-cylinder phenomena from the limited literature on hydrogen-fuelled spark-ignition optical engines and make comparisons were appropriate.  相似文献

This paper experimentally investigates the sintered porous heat sink for the cooling of the high-powered compact microprocessors for server applications. Heat sink cold plate consisted of rectangular channel with sintered porous copper insert of 40% porosity and 1.44 × 10?11 m2 permeability. Forced convection heat transfer and pressure drop through the porous structure were studied at Re ? 408 with water as the coolant medium. In the study, heat fluxes of up to 2.9 MW/m2 were successfully removed at the source with the coolant pressure drop of 34 kPa across the porous sample while maintaining the heater junction temperature below the permissible limit of 100 ± 5 °C for chipsets. The minimum value of 0.48 °C/W for cold plate thermal resistance (Rcp) was achieved at maximum flow rate of 4.2 cm3/s in the experiment. For the designed heat sink, different components of the cold plate thermal resistance (Rcp) from the thermal footprint of source to the coolant were identified and it was found that contact resistance at the interface of source and cold plate makes up 44% of Rcp and proved to be the main component. Convection resistance from heated channel wall with porous insert to coolant accounts for 37% of the Rcp. With forced convection of water at Re = 408 through porous copper media, maximum values of 20 kW/m2 K for heat transfer coefficient and 126 for Nusselt number were recorded. The measured effective thermal conductivity of the water saturated porous copper was as high as 32 W/m K that supported the superior heat augmentation characteristics of the copper–water based sintered porous heat sink. The present investigation helps to classify the sintered porous heat sink as a potential thermal management device for high-end microprocessors.  相似文献

A 3-cylinder port fuel injection engine was adopted to study engine power, torque, fuel economy, emissions including regulated and non-regulated pollutants and cold start performance with the fuel of low fraction methanol in gasoline. Without any retrofit of the engine, experiments show that the engine power and torque will decrease with the increase fraction of methanol in the fuel blends under wide open throttle (WOT) conditions. However, if spark ignition timing is advanced, the engine power and torque can be improved under WOT operating conditions. Engine thermal efficiency is thus improved in almost all operating conditions. Engine combustion analyses show that the fast burning phase becomes shorter, however, the flame development phase is a little delay. When methanol/gasoline fuel blends being used, the engine emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) decrease, nitrogen oxides (NOx) changes little prior to three-way catalytic converter (TWC). After TWC, the conversion efficiencies of HC, CO and NOx are better. The non-regulated emissions, unburned methanol and formaldehyde, increase with the fraction of methanol, engine speed and load, and generally the maximum concentrations are less than 200 ppm. Experimental tests further prove that methanol and formaldehyde can be oxidized effectively by TWC. During the cold start and warming-up process at 5 °C, with methanol addition into gasoline, HC and CO emissions decrease obviously. HC emission reduces more than 50% in the first few seconds (cold start period) and nearly 30% in the following warming-up period, CO reduces nearly 25% when the engine is fueled with M30. Meanwhile, the temperature of exhaust increases, which is good to activate TWC.  相似文献

Selection of an appropriate HTF is important for minimising the cost of the solar receiver, thermal storage and heat exchangers, and for achieving high receiver and cycle efficiencies. Current molten salt HTFs have high melting points (142–240 °C) and degrade above 600 °C. Sodium’s low melting point (97.7 °C) and high boiling point (873 °C) allow for a much larger range of operational temperatures. Most importantly, the high temperatures of sodium allow the use of advanced cycles (e.g. combined Brayton/Rankine cycles). In this study, a comparison between the thermophysical properties of two heat transfer fluids (HTFs), Hitec (a ternary molten salt 53% KNO3 + 40% NaNO2 + 7% NaNO3) and liquid sodium (Na), has been carried out to determine their suitability for use in high-temperature concentrated solar thermal central-receiver systems for power generation. To do this, a simple receiver model was developed to determine the influences of the fluids’ characteristics on receiver design and efficiency. While liquid sodium shows potential for solar thermal power systems due to its wide range of operation temperatures, it also has two other important differences – a high heat transfer coefficient (~an order of magnitude greater than Hitec) and a low heat capacity (30–50% lower than Hitec salt). These issues are studied in depth in this model. Overall, we found that liquid sodium is potentially a very attractive alternative to molten salts in next generation solar thermal power generation if its limitations can be overcome.  相似文献

A thermal energy storage system, consisting of a packed bed of rocks as storing material and air as high-temperature heat transfer fluid, is analyzed for concentrated solar power (CSP) applications. A 6.5 MWhth pilot-scale thermal storage unit immersed in the ground and of truncated conical shape is fabricated and experimentally demonstrated to generate thermoclines. A dynamic numerical heat transfer model is formulated for separate fluid and solid phases and variable thermo-physical properties in the range of 20–650 °C, and validated with experimental results. The validated model is further applied to design and simulate an array of two industrial-scale thermal storage units, each of 7.2 GWhth capacity, for a 26 MWel round-the-clock concentrated solar power plant during multiple 8 h-charging/16 h-discharging cycles, yielding 95% overall thermal efficiency.  相似文献

Two special biporous wicks are adopted in stainless-steel–ammonia loop heat pipes (LHPs) with flat evaporator to enhance their heat transfer performances. The experimental results demonstrate that thermal and hydraulic characteristics of the wick with porosity of 69% (in LHP 2) are better than that of the wick with porosity of 65% (in LHP 1). The maximum heat loads of LHP 1 and LHP 2 could, respectively, reach 120 W (heat flux 11.8 W/cm2) and 130 W (12.8 W/cm2) at the allowable evaporator temperature below 60 °C. Meanwhile, they can start up at heat load as low as 2.5 W. The LHPs show very fast and smooth response to heat load and operate stably without obvious temperature oscillation. The total thermal resistances of the LHPs vary between 1.47 and 0.33 °C/W at heat load ranging from 10 to 130 W.  相似文献

In this study, an exergoeconomic analysis of condenser type parallel flow heat exchangers is presented. Exergy losses of the heat exchanger and investment and operation expenses related to this are determined with functions of steam mass flow rate and water exit temperature at constant values of thermal power of the heat exchanger at 75240 W, cold water mass flow rate and temperature. The inlet temperature of water is 18 °C and exit temperatures of water are varied from 25 °C to 36 °C. The values of temperature and pressure of saturated steam in the condenser are given to be Tcon=47 ° C and Pcon=10.53 kPa. Constant environment conditions are assumed. Annual operation hour and unit price of electrical energy are taken into account for determination of the annual operation expenses. Investment expenses are obtained according to the variation of heat capacity rate and logarithmic mean temperature difference and also heat exchanger dimension determined for each situation. The present analysis is hoped to be useful in determining the effective parameters for the most appropriate exergy losses together with operating conditions and in finding the optimum working points for the condenser type heat exchangers.  相似文献

In this paper, two single-acting, twin power piston and four power pistons, gamma-configuration, low-temperature differential Stirling engine are designed and constructed. The engine performance is tested with air at atmospheric pressure by using a gas burner as a heat source. The engine is tested with various heat inputs. Variations of engine torque, shaft power and brake thermal efficiency at various heat inputs with engine speed and engine performance are presented. The Beale number obtained from testing of the engines is also investigated. The results indicate that, for twin power piston engine, at a maximum actual heat input of 2355 J/s with a heater temperature of 589 K, the engine produces a maximum torque of 1.222 N m at 67.7 rpm, a maximum shaft power of 11.8 W at 133 rpm, and a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 0.494% at 133 rpm, approximately. For the four power pistons engine, the results indicate that at the maximum actual heat input of 4041 J/s with the heater temperature of 771 K, the engine produces a maximum torque of 10.55 N m at 28.5 rpm, a maximum shaft power of 32.7 W at 42.1 rpm, and a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 0.809% at 42.1 rpm, approximately.  相似文献

In this research, mesoporous silica (MPSiO2) nanoparticles were dispersed in n-octadecane as an organic phase change material (PCM) in order to produce a novel composite for thermal storage. Stable PCMs containing 1 wt.%, 3 wt.% and 5 wt.% MPSiO2 nanoparticles (PCM/MPSiO2) were fabricated by dispersing MPSiO2 in PCM. MPSiO2 particles were investigated by SEM and TEM techniques, which showed high order of porosity and spherical particles of ca. 300 nm. The thermal conductivity in both solid and liquid phases was measured by transient plane source (TPS) technique in the temperature range of 5–55 °C. A maximum thermal conductivity enhancement of 5% for 3 wt.% MPSiO2 at 5 °C, and 6% for 5 wt.% MPSiO2 at 55 °C was experimentally obtained. Moreover, it was observed that enhancement in thermal conductivity is non-monotonic in solid phase with increasing MPSiO2 particle loading. The viscosity results showed that for mass fractions of nanoparticles greater than 3% in liquid PCM, the behavior of liquid is non-Newtonian. Also, the viscosity of PCM containing MPSiO2 nanoparticles was measured to be increased up to 60% compared to the liquid PCM for 5 wt.% MPSiO2 at 35 °C.  相似文献

In this work, transient characteristics of thermal energy storage in partitioned enclosures filled with microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) particles were examined experimentally and numerically. The enclosure is partitioned with aspect ratio λ and packed with different MEPCMs with melting temperatures about TM = 28 °C and 37 °C. The top and bottom surfaces of the partitioned enclosure are, respectively, maintained at hot and cold temperatures, while the other surfaces are kept thermally insulated. The results showed that at the initial transient, the net energy storage in partitioned enclosure, Qnet, increases with the time. Finally, the Qnet approaches quickly the steady state. Additionally, higher dimensionless accumulated energy through the hot wall Qh and cold wall Qc are found for a case with higher hot wall temperature Th. that the faster melting is experienced for the system with higher Stefan number and the subcooling number is the main parameter to dominate the thermal latent heat storage of the MEPCM system. In addition, better net energy storage is noted for a partitioned enclosure with a smaller aspect ratio.  相似文献

The temperature distribution in combustion engine components is highly influenced by thermal contact resistance. For the prediction and optimisation of the thermal behaviour of modern combustion engines knowledge about the contact heat transfer is crucial.Available correlations to predict the contact resistance are simplifications of the real geometric conditions and only tested for moderate pressures up to 7 MPa. Typical combustion engine applications include contact pressures up to 250 MPa.The experimental approach presented here to derive the thermal contact resistance in terms of contact heat transfer coefficients for high temperature and high pressure conditions is based on transient infrared temperature measurements. Two bodies initially at two different temperatures are brought in contact and the surface temperature histories are recorded with a high-speed infrared camera. The contact heat flux is calculated by solving the related inverse problem. From the contact heat flux and from the measured temperature jump at the interface the contact heat transfer coefficient is calculated. The inverse method used for the calculation of the heat flux is based on the analytical solution for a semi-infinite body and a step response to a Neumann boundary condition. This method provides an algorithm that is used in a sequential manner. The use of “future” temperature data greatly improve the stability of the governing equations and reduce the sensitivity to measurement errors.  相似文献

A hydrogen fuelled, 30 W proton exchange membrane fuel-cell (PEMFC) system is presented that is able to operate at an ambient temperature between −20 and 40 °C. The system, which comprises the fuel-cell stack, pumps, humidifier, valves and blowers is fully characterized in a climatic chamber under various ambient temperatures. Successful cold start-up and stable operation at −20 °C are reported as well as the system behaviour during long-term at 40 °C. A simple thermal model of the stack is developed and validated, and accounts for heat losses by radiation and convection. Condensation of steam is addressed as well as reaction gas depletion. The stack is regarded as a uniform heat source. The electrochemical reaction is not resolved. General design rules for the cold start-up of a portable fuel-cell stack are deduced by the thermal model and are taken into consideration for the design. The model is used for a comparison between active-assisted cold start-up procedures with a passive cold start-up from temperatures below 0 °C. It is found that a passive cold start-up may not be the most efficient strategy. Additionally, the influence of different stack concepts on the start-up behaviour is analysed by the thermal model. Three power classes of PEMFC stacks are compared: a Ballard Mk902 module for automotive applications with 85 kW, the forerunner stack Ballard Mk5 (5 kW) for medium power applications, and the developed OutdoorFC stack (30 W), for portable applications.  相似文献

A study was performed to evaluate the use of thermal cracking to overcome cold flow and stability limitations of current biodiesel. Experiments were conducted in a batch cracking reactor system using soy methyl ester and canola methyl ester feedstocks. The amount of high-MW C16–C24 FAMEs was reduced from nearly 100% in the original feedstock by an order of magnitude. Yields of desirable cracking product ranged from 70 to 85% while cloud and pour points decreased around 20 °C and 15 °C, respectively. The stability of the fuel was improved by converting all of the unsaturated esters into lower-MW saturated esters. This method may lead to an attractive process to produce an improved biodiesel that is more conductive to cold temperature utilization and more stable during storage.  相似文献

The engine coolant (water/ethylene glycol mixture type) becomes one of the most commonly used commercial fluids in cooling system of automobiles. However, the heat transfer coefficient of this kind of engine coolant is limited. The rapid developments of nanotechnology have led to emerging of a relatively new class of fluids called nanofluids, which could offer the enhanced thermal conductivity (TC) compared with the conventional coolants. The present study reports the new findings on the thermal conductivity and viscosity of car engine coolants based silicon carbide (SiC) nanofluids. The homogeneous and stable nanofluids with volume fraction up to 0.5 vol.% were prepared by the two-step method with the addition of surfactant (oleic acid). It was found that the thermal conductivity of nanofluids increased with the volume fraction and temperature (10–50 °C), and the highest thermal conductivity enhancement was found to be 53.81% for 0.5 vol.% nanofluid at 50 °C. In addition, the overall effectiveness of the current nanofluids (0.2 vol.%) was found to be ~ 1.6, which indicated that the car engine coolant-based SiC nanofluid prepared in this paper was better compared to the car engine coolant used as base liquid in this study.  相似文献

This paper presents the surface temperature and voltage distributions on a prismatic lithium-ion battery pack at 1C, 2C, 3C, and 4C discharge rates and 5 °C, 15 °C, 25 °C, and 35 °C boundary conditions (BCs) for water cooling and ~ 22 °C for air cooling methods. It provides quantitative data regarding thermal behaviour of lithium-ion batteries for designing thermal management systems and developing reliable thermal models. In this regard, three large LiFePO4 20 Ah capacity, prismatic batteries are connected in series with four cold plates used between cells and eighteen thermocouples are placed at distributed locations on the principle surface of all three cells: the first six for the first cell, the second six for the second cell, and the third six for the third cell, and the average and peak surface temperatures as well as voltage distributions are measured and presented in this study. In addition, the simulated heat generation rate, temperature and voltage distributions are validated with an experimental data for the above mentioned C-rates and BCs. The present study shows that increasing discharge rates and BCs results in increase in the maximum and average surface temperatures at the three locations (near the anode, cathode, and mid surface of the body). The highest value of the average surface temperature is obtained for 4C and 35 °C BC (36.36 °C) and the lowest value is obtained for 1C and 5 °C BC (7.22 °C) for water cooling method.  相似文献

The average heat transfer rates of gravitational and magnetic convection of water heated from below and cooled from above are measured for two cases of cold wall temperature θc at 10 °C and 30 °C. The height of the cylindrical enclosure is 2 mm with 40 mm in diameter. The magnetic field is imposed in a vertical direction to increase or decrease 29% of the gravitational acceleration in a bore space of a super-conducting magnet of 10 T at the solenoid center. The group of data at θc = 30 °C gives a better agreement with the classical heat transfer rate of Silveston than that at θc = 10 °C. This is probably due to the almost constant value in the volumetric magnetic susceptibility of water at about 10 °C.  相似文献

Palmitic acid (PA, 59.8 °C) and lauric acid (LA, 42.6 °C) are phase change materials (PCM) having quite high melting temperatures which can limit their use in low temperature solar applications such as solar space heating and greenhouse heating. However, their melting temperatures can be tailored to appropriate value by preparing a eutectic mixture of the lauric and the palmitic acids. In the present study, the thermal analysis based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique shows that the mixture of 69.0 wt% LA and 31 wt% PA forms a eutectic mixture having melting temperature of 35.2 °C and the latent heat of fusion of 166.3 J g−1. This study also considers the experimental determination of the thermal characteristics of the eutectic mixture during the heat charging and discharging processes. Radial and axial temperature distribution, heat transfer coefficient between the heat transfer fluid (HTF) pipe and the PCM, heat recovery rate and heat charging and discharging fractions were experimentally established employing a vertical concentric pipe-in-pipe energy storage system. The changes of these characteristics were evaluated with respect to the effect of inlet HTF temperature and mass flow rate. The DSC thermal analysis and the experimental results indicate that the LA–PA eutectic mixture can be a potential material for low temperature thermal energy storage applications in terms of its thermo-physical and thermal characteristics.  相似文献

The imbalance of electrical demand in summer due to cooling system demand is a big problem in many countries. One promising solution is shifting peak demand from early afternoon to night by utilizing natural cold energy resources such as cool outside air during night or running a refrigerator driven by midnight power. In these cases, using the thermal energy storage (TES) of phase change material (PCM) which has a melting point from 15 to 25 °C is one of the most effective ideas. However, few suitable PCMs for this temperature range are at present commercially available. This study aims to evaluate the potential of Mn(NO3)2 · 6H2O (manganese (II) nitrate hexahydrate) as a new PCM for the TES of cooling systems. First, experiments on the modulation of the melting point of Mn(NO3)2 · 6H2O and reduction of supercooling were made by dissolving small amounts of salts in the material. Consequently, MnCl2 · 4H2O was found to have good performance with regard to both modulation of the melting temperature and the heat of fusion. Next, a thermal response test was carried out by using a small cylindrical vessel. Results showed that the required temperature levels for charging and discharging the heat of this mixture were clarified. In addition, the price and safety of this material as a PCM are discussed.  相似文献

Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of an absorbent salt solution in a commercial plate heat exchanger serving as a solution sub-cooler in the high loop of triple-effect absorption refrigeration cycle was investigated. The main objectives of this research were to establish the correlation equations to predict the heat transfer and pressure drop and to analyze and optimize the operating parameters for use in the design of absorption systems. In order to conduct above studies, a single-pass cross-corrugated ALFA-LAVAL plate heat exchanger, Model PO1-VG, with capacity of 14,650 W (50,000 Btu/h) was used. In order to evaluate the performance, hot solution inlet temperatures from 55 °C (130 °F) to 77 °C (170 °F), and inlet temperature differences from 14 °C (25 °F) to 20 °C (35 °F) were used. The cold side of the heat exchanger was operated to match the equal heat capacity rate of hot side.Based on the empirical models proposed in the literature, a program was developed and experimental data were curve fitted. From the best-fitted curves, the power-law equations for heat transfer and pressure losses were established and the performance was evaluated. In the hot salt solution side, the Reynolds number was varied from 250 to 1100 and the resulting Nusselt number varied from 7.4 to 15.8. The measured overall heat transfer coefficient Uoverall varied from 970 W/m2 °C (170 Btu/h ft2 °F) to 2270 W/m2 °C (400 Btu/h ft2 °F) and the Fanning friction factor in the absorbent side of the heat exchanger varied from 5.7 to 7.6. The correlation equations developed to predict the heat transfer and friction factor perfectly agree with the experimental results. Those equations can be used to predict the performance of any solution with Prandtl numbers between 82 and 174, for heat exchangers with similar geometry.  相似文献
