A three-dimensional numerical simulation is conducted to investigate the effect of geometrical parameters on laminar water flow and forced convection heat transfer characteristics in grooved microchannel heat sink (GMCHS). Four geometry variables which are; the depth, tip length, pitch and orientation of the cavities are taken into account in order to optimize the aluminum heat sink design. These geometric parameters could change the cavity shape from triangular to trapezoidal and then to rectangular shape. The governing and energy equations are solved using the finite volume method (FVM). The performance of GMCHS is evaluated in terms of Nusselt number ratio, thermal/hydraulic performance (JF) and isotherm and streamlines contours. The results showed that the trapezoidal groove with groove tip length ratio of δ = 0.5, groove depth ratio β = 0.4, groove pitch ratio of ψ = 3.334, grooves orientation ratio of ζ = 0.00 and Re = 100 is the optimum thermal design for GMCHS with Nusselt number enhancement of 51.59% and friction factor improvement of 2.35%.  相似文献

In this paper, experimentally determined pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of flow of water in a 75-start spirally grooved tube with twisted tape insert are presented. Laminar to fully turbulent ranges of Reynolds numbers have been considered. The grooves are clockwise with respect to the direction of flow. Compared to smooth tube, the heat transfer enhancement due to spiral grooves is further augmented by inserting twisted tapes having twist ratios Y ? 10.15, 7.95 and 3.4. It is found that the direction of twist (clockwise and anticlockwise) influences the thermo-hydraulic characteristics. Constant pumping power comparisons with smooth tube characteristics show that in spirally grooved tube with and without twisted tape, heat transfer increases considerably in laminar and moderately in turbulent range of Reynolds numbers. However, for the bare spiral tube and for spiral tube with anticlockwise twisted tape (Y = 10.15), reduction in heat transfer is noticed over a transition range of Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

This study investigates heat transfer and flow characteristics of water flowing through horizontal internally grooved tubes. The test tubes consisted of one smooth tube, one straight grooved tube, and four grooved tubes with different pitches. All test tubes were made from type 304 stainless steel. The length and inner diameter of the test tube were 2 m and 7.1 mm, respectively. Water was used as working fluid, heated by DC power supply under constant heat flux condition. The test runs were performed at average fluid temperature of 25 °C, heat flux of 3.5 kW/m2, and Reynolds number range from 4000 to 10,000. The effect of grooved pitch on heat transfer and pressure drop was also investigated. The performance of the grooved tubes was discussed in terms of thermal enhancement factor. The results showed that the thermal enhancement factor obtained from groove tubes is about 1.4 to 2.2 for a pitch of 0.5 in.; 1.1 to 1.3 for pitches of 8, 10, and 12 in., respectively; and 0.8 to 0.9 for a straight groove.  相似文献

In this paper, mixed convection flow and heat transfer around a long cylinder of square cross-section under the influence of aiding buoyancy are investigated in the vertical unconfined configuration (Reynolds number, Re = 1–40 and Richardson number, Ri = 0–1). The semi-explicit finite volume method implemented on the collocated grid arrangement is used to solve the governing equations along with the appropriate boundary conditions. The onset of flow separation occurs between Re = 1–2, between Re = 2–3 and between Re = 3–4 for Ri = 0, 0.5 and 1, respectively. The flow is found to be steady for the range of conditions studied here. The friction, pressure and total drag coefficients are found to increase with Richardson number, i.e., as the influence of aiding buoyancy increases drag coefficients increase at the constant value of the Reynolds number. The temperature field around the obstacle is presented by isotherm contours at the Prandtl number of 0.7 (air). The local and average Nusselt numbers are calculated to give a detailed study of heat transfer over each surface of the square cylinder and an overall heat transfer rate and it is found that heat transfer increases with increase in Reynolds number and/or Richardson number. The simple expressions for the wake length and average cylinder Nusselt number are obtained for the range of conditions covered in this work.  相似文献

A numerical analysis has been carried about to study the heat and mass transfer of forced convection flow with liquid film evaporation in a saturated non-Darcian porous medium. Parametric analyses were conducted concerning the effects of the porosity ε, inlet liquid Reynolds number Rel, inlet air Reynolds number Rea on the heat and mass transfer performance. The results conclude that better heat and mass transfer performances are noticed for the system having a higher Rea, a lower Rel, and a higher ε. Rel plays a more important role on the heat and mass transfer performance than Rea and ε. For the case of ε = 0.4 and Rea = 10,000, the increases of Nu and Sh for Rel = 50 are about by 33.9% and 35.3% relative to the values for Rel = 250.  相似文献

Experimental investigation was performed on the mixed convection heat transfer of thermal entrance region in an inclined rectangular duct for laminar and transition flow. Air flowed upwardly and downwardly with inclination angles from ?90° to 90°. The duct was made of duralumin plate and heated with uniform heat flux axially. The experiment was designed for determining the effects of inclination angles on the heat transfer coefficients and friction factors at seven orientations (θ = ? 90°, ?60°, ?30°, 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°), six Reynolds numbers (Re  420, 840, 1290, 1720, 2190 and 2630) within the range of Grashof numbers from 6.8 × 103 to 4.1 × 104. The optimum inclination angles that yielded the maximum heat transfer coefficients decreased from 30° to ?30° with the increase of Reynolds numbers from 420 to 1720. The heat transfer coefficients first increased with inclination angles up to a maximum value and then decreased. With further increase in Reynolds numbers, the heat transfer coefficients were nearly independent of inclination angles. The friction factors decreased with the increase of inclination angles from ?90° to 90° when Reynolds numbers ranged from 420 to 1290, and independent of inclination angles with higher Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

The forced convective heat transfer in straight and coiled tubes, having smooth and corrugated wall, was experimentally investigated in two ranges of the Reynolds number: a lower one (5 < Re < 13) obtained with Glycerol and a higher one (150 < Re < 1500) obtained with Ethylene Glycol. The aim of the research was to verify the effectiveness of these passive heat transfer enhancement techniques when highly viscous fluids are treated. This issue is particularly crucial in applications in which the thermal processing of high Prandtl number fluids is required, such as in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. In the present note, preliminary results, obtained by considering a given geometrical configuration characterized by a tube diameter of 14 mm, a curvature ratio of 0.06, a corrugation depth of 1 mm and a corrugation pitch of 16 mm, are presented. The main conclusion is that the wall curvature enhances heat transfer at all Re, whereas the wall corrugation enhances heat transfer only in the higher Re range; moreover the wall corrugation is totally ineffective in the low Re range and, if helical coils are present, it also destroys the benefit induced by the wall curvature. The largest increment in heat transfer rates is thus obtained by using smooth helical coils at low Re, and corrugated helical coils at larger Re. The results, although of preliminary nature, suggest interesting applications of the passive heat transfer enhancement technique based on smooth wall coiled tubes in the very low Reynolds number values range, while the combined passive technique based on wall corrugation and curvature represents an interesting solution for Reynolds number values in the range 150–1500.  相似文献

The nonlinear flow and heat transfer characteristics for a slot-jet impinging on slightly-curved surfaces are experimentally studied here. The effects of curved surface geometry and jet Reynolds number on the jet velocity distribution and circumferential Nusselt numbers are examined. Two different slightly-curved surface geometries of convex and concave are used as target surfaces. The nozzle geometry is a rectangular slot, and the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance equals to L1 = 8. The constant heat fluxes are accordingly applied to the surfaces to obtain an impingement cooling by the air jet at ambient temperature. The measurements are made for the jet Reynolds numbers of Re = 8617, Re = 13 350 and Re = 15 415 for both curved surfaces. The velocity distributions of issuing jet from the nozzle exit to the target surface are obtained by a highly sensitive hot-wire anemometer. The T-type thermocouples are used to measure local temperatures of both the air jet and the plates. Two-dimensional velocity measurements show that the surfaces are remained out of the potential core region for all Re tested here. New correlations for local, stagnation point, and average Nusselt numbers as a function of jet Reynolds number and dimensionless circumferential distance are reported. The correlations reveal that the impinging cooling rate is higher with the concave surface and increase with increasing Re.  相似文献

An experimental study of heat transfer and pressure drop in a rectangular channel roughened by scaled surfaces on two opposite walls with flows directed in the forward and downward directions for Reynolds numbers (Re) in the range of 1500  Re  15,000 was performed. Nusselt number ratios between the scale-roughened and smooth-walled ducted flows (Nu/Nu) were in the range of 7.4–9.2 and 6.2–7.4 for laminar forward and downward flows respectively. The Nu/Nu values for turbulent developed flows in the scale-roughened channel with forward and downward flows were about 4.5 and 3 respectively. A comparison of present data with reported results using different types of surface roughness demonstrated the better thermal performances of present scale-roughened channel with forward flow at conditions of Re > 10,000. Experimental correlations of heat transfer and friction coefficient were derived for the present scale-roughened rectangular channel.  相似文献

In this study heat transfer and fluid flow of Al2O3/water nanofluid in two dimensional parallel plate microchannel without and with micromixers have been investigated for nanoparticle volume fractions of ϕ = 0, ϕ = 4%  and base fluid Reynolds numbers of Ref = 5, 20, 50. One baffle on the bottom wall and another on the top wall work as a micromixer and heat transfer enhancement device. A single-phase finite difference FORTRAN code using Projection method has been written to solve governing equations with constant wall temperature boundary condition. The effect of various parameters such as nanoparticle volume fraction, base fluid Reynolds number, baffle distance, height and order of arrangement have been studied. Results showed that the presence of baffles and also increasing the Re number and nanoparticle volume fraction increase the local and averaged heat transfer and friction coefficients. Also, the effect of nanoparticle volume fraction on heat transfer coefficient is more than the friction coefficient in most of the cases. It was found that the main mechanism of enhancing heat transfer or mixing is the recirculation zones that are created behind the baffles. The size of these zones increases with Reynolds number and baffle height. The fluid pushing toward the wall by the opposed wall baffle and reattaching of separated flow are the locations of local maximum heat transfer and friction coefficients.  相似文献

A product of friction factor and Reynolds number (f · Re) of gaseous flow in a quasi-fully developed region of a micro-tube was obtained numerically and experimentally. Two-dimensional compressible momentum and energy equations were solved for a wide range of Reynolds number and Mach number for both ‘no heat conduction’ and isothermal flow conditions. It was found from numerical results that the product of friction factor and Reynolds number (f · Re) in a quasi-fully developed region is expressed as a function of Mach number. The tube cutting method was adopted to obtain the pressure variation along the tube. Fused silica tubes of nominal diameter of 150 μm, were used for experiments. The experimental results also indicate that (f · Re) is a function of Mach number.  相似文献

This article presents an experimental study of the local heat transfer on the rotor surface in a discoidal rotor–stator system air-gap in which an air jet comes through the stator and impinges the rotor. To determine the surface temperatures, measurements were taken on the rotor, using an experimental technique based on infrared thermography. A thermal balance was used to identify the local convective heat transfer coefficient. The influence of the dimensionless spacing interval G between the disks and of the rotational Reynolds number Re was measured and compared with the data available in bibliography. Local convective heat transfer coefficients were obtained for an axial Reynolds number Rej = 41.6 × 103, a rotational Reynolds number Re between 0.2 × 105 and 5.16 × 105, and a dimensionless spacing interval G ranging from 0.01 to 0.16.  相似文献

Turbulent convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of magnetic Fe3O4 nanofluid flowing through a uniformly heated horizontal circular tube with and without twisted tape inserts are estimated experimentally. Experiments are conducted in the particle volume concentration range of 0 < φ < 0.6%,twisted tape inserts of twist ratio in the range of 0 < H/D < 15and Reynolds number range of 3000 < Re < 22000. Heat transfer and friction factor enhancement of 0.6% volume concentration of Fe3O4 nanofluid in a plain tube with twisted tape insert of twist ratio H/D = 5 is 51.88% and 1.231 times compared to water flowing in a plain tube under same Reynolds number. Generalized regression equation is presented for the estimation of Nusselt number and friction factor for both water and Fe3O4 nanofluid in a plain tube and with twisted tape inserts under turbulent flow condition.  相似文献

This study presents the numerical study of transient conjugate heat transfer in a high turbulence air jet impinging over a flat circular disk. The numerical simulation of transient, two-dimensional cylindrical coordinate, turbulent flow and heat transfer is adopted to test the accuracy of the theoretical model. The turbulent governing equations are resolved by the control-volume based finite-difference method with a power-low scheme, and the well-known low-Re κω turbulence model to describe the turbulent structure. The SIMPLE algorithm is adopted to solve the pressure–velocity coupling. The parameters studied include turbulent flow Reynolds number (Re = 16,100–29,600), heated temperature of a circular disk (Th = 373 K) or heat flux (q = 63–189 kW/m2), and orifice to heat-source spacing (H/D = 4–10). The numerical results of the transient impinging process indicate that the jet Reynolds number has a significant effect on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer, particularly in the stagnation region of an impinging jet. High turbulence values lead to greater heat transfer coefficients in the stagnation region and cause a bypass of the laminar-to-turbulent transition region in the wall jet region. Induced turbulence from the environment around the jet also influences the variation of the stagnation heat transfer. The modeling approach used here effectively captures both the stagnation region behavior and the transition to turbulence, thus forming the basis of a reliable turbulence model.  相似文献

According to the current literature on the cooling of two cylinders in row, by a uniform flow of air, the first cylinder is always a heat transfer promoter versus the second one. The aim of the present paper is to summarize the state of art of the literature on the cooling of two cylinders in row by a slot jet of air. Additional experiments are carried on in order to investigate the possible application of jet cooling to heat transfer apparatuses, including electronics, in order to study the positions of the two cylinders in row which realize the same heat transfer on each cylinder. In the experiments a slot jet of air with low turbulence is employed with a slot height, S, equal to the impinged cylinder diameter, D, i.e. D/S = 1.0. The first cylinder is set at two distances H from the slot exit, H/S = 4 and 6, while the distance of the second cylinder from the first one, L, is variable from L/S = 2–11. The Reynolds number, Re, defined with the cylinder diameter D, spans in the range Re = 11,000–22,200. If the first cylinder is set at the dimensionless distance from the slot exit which realizes the maximum mean heat transfer on the first cylinder, i.e. H/S = 6, the second one has generally a lower mean Nusselt number. The only exception is when the second cylinder is set at the dimensionless distance L/S = 4 and the Reynolds number is at the maximum value experimented, i.e. Re = 22,200. If the first cylinder is set at the dimensionless distance H/S = 4 the mean Nusselt number on the second cylinder is greater if its distance from the first one is in the range L/S = 3.5–7 for Re = 14,300–22,200. The first cylinder acts as a heat transfer promoter, as happens in uniform flow, only for Re = 22,200.  相似文献

A great number of experimental investigations allowing one to reveal the physical mechanism of processes responsible for their thermal and hydraulic performance are carried out in attempt to solve problems of updating constructions and methods of thermal design of heating surfaces of transversely finned tubes widespread in power engineering. Results of flow visualization and investigation of pressure fields and local heat transfer at the fin surface over the Reynolds number range Re = (1.0 ? 6.6) · 104 are presented for the case of a wide variation of geometric characteristics of finned tubes and parameters of their arrangement in a bundle. Regularities substantially changing the existing concept of transfer processes in the interfin space and in the wake behind a finned tube are revealed. It is found that the flow behavior and the distribution of local heat transfer coefficients over the fin surface change significantly at the fin height-to-finned tube diameter h/d approximately equal to 0.4. The results obtained are generalized in the form of the patterns of flow and heat transfer at the finned tube surface, including seven characteristic regions and four types of flow separation.  相似文献

This study is to experimentally investigate the heat transfer enhancement by perforation in air cooling of two in-line rectangular heat sources module. Two separation distances between the heat sources were investigated at s/L = 0.5 and 1.0. The area between the heat sources in both cases were perforated in aligned arrangement such that the holes open area ratio (β) are of 0, 0.0736, 0.1472 and 0.2944. The dimensionless temperature distribution and the average Nusselt number are considered at different values of Reynolds number (3391 ? ReL ? 10798) and holes open area ratio. It could be seen that perforation could enhance the heat transfer coefficients and reduce the module temperature significantly. Correlations are obtained for the average Nusselt number utilizing the present measurements within the investigated range of the different parameters.  相似文献

Structure of unsteady laminar flow and heat transfer of power-law fluids in two-dimensional horizontal plane channel with a built-in heated square cylinder is studied numerically. The governing equations are solved using a control volume finite element method (CVFEM) adapted to the staggered grid. Computations are performed over a range of Reynolds and Richardson numbers from Re = 20 to 200 and from Ri = 0 to 8, respectively at fixed Prandtl number Pr = 50 and blockage ratio value β′ = 1/8. Three different values of the power-law index (n = 0.5, 1 and 1.4) are considered in this study to show its effect on the value of the critical Reynolds number defining the transition between two different flow regimes (symmetrical and periodic flows), the variations of Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients and the heat transfer from the square cylinder as function of Reynolds number. Heat transfer correlations are obtained through forced convection. A discussion about the buoyancy effect on the flow pattern and the heat transfer for different power-law index is also presented.  相似文献

An experimental investigation is presented on mixed (free and forced) convection to study the local and average heat transfer for hydrodynamically fully developed, thermally developing and thermally fully developed laminar air flow in a horizontal circular cylinder. The experimental setup consists of aluminum cylinder as test section with 30 mm inside diameter and 900 mm heated length (L/D = 30), is subjected to a constant wall heat flux boundary condition. The investigation covers Reynolds number range from 400 to 1600, the heat flux varied from 60 W/m2 to 400 W/m2 and with cylinder inclination angle of θ = 0° (horizontal). The hydrodynamically fully developed condition is achieved by using an aluminum entrance section pipes (calming sections) having the same inside diameter as test section pipe but with variable lengths. The entrance sections included two long calming sections, one with length of 180 cm (L/D = 60), another one with length of 240 cm (L/D = 80) and two short calming sections with lengths 60 cm (L/D = 20), 120 cm (L/D = 40). The surface temperature variation along the cylinder surface, the local and average Nusselt number variation with the dimensionless axial distance Z+ were presented. For all entrance sections, it was found an increase in the Nusselt number values as the heat flux increases. It was concluded that the free convection effects tended to decrease the heat transfer results at low Re while to increase the heat transfer results for high Re. The combined convection regime could be bounded by a suitable selection of Re number ranges and the heat flux ranges. The obtained Richardson numbers (Ri) range varied approximately from 0.13 to 7.125. The average Nusselt numbers were correlated with the (Rayleigh numbers/Reynolds numbers). The proposed correlation has been compared with available literature and showed satisfactory agreement.  相似文献

Momentum and heat transfer characteristics of a semi-circular cylinder immersed in unconfined flowing Newtonian fluids have been investigated numerically. The governing equations, namely, continuity, Navier–Stokes and energy, have been solved in the steady flow regime over wide ranges of the Reynolds number (0.01 ? Re ? 39.5) and Prandtl number (Pr ? 100). Prior to the investigation of drag and heat transfer phenomena, the critical values of the Reynolds number for wake formation (0.55 < Rec < 0.6) and for the onset of vortex shedding (39.5 < Rec < 40) have been identified. The corresponding values of the lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and Strouhal number are also presented. After establishing the limit of the steady flow regime, the influence of the Reynolds number (0.01 ? Re ? 39.5) and Prandtl number (Pr = 0.72, 1, 10, 50 and 100) on the global flow and heat transfer characteristics have been elucidated. Detailed kinematics of the flow is investigated in terms of the streamline and vorticity profiles and the variation of pressure coefficient in the vicinity of the cylinder. The functional dependence of the individual and total drag coefficients on the Reynolds number is explored. The Nusselt number shows an additional dependence on the Prandtl number. In addition, the isotherm profiles, local Nusselt number (NuL) and average Nusselt number (Nu) are also presented to analyze the heat transfer characteristic of a semi-circular cylinder in Newtonian media.  相似文献
