The effect of a mixture of calcium alginate, iron(III)ferrocyanide and potassium iodide added to rat diet on 85Sr, 137Cs and 131I metabolism and health was investigated in female rats after four weeks of treatment. The retention of these radioisotopes was determined in the whole body and critical organs six days after 85Sr and 137Cs and one day after 131I oral administration. The health effect of the mixture was evaluated by measuring body weights, haematological parameters, concentrations of iron, zinc and manganese in the kidneys, liver and femur, bone parameters (femur composition and morphometry) and by a histopathological examination.The mixture reduced 85Sr retention in the femur 11 times, 137Cs retention in the thigh muscle 102 times and 131I retention in the thyroid 134 times. Treated animals were in good health and the only differences found between the control and experimental rats were slightly lower haemoglobin values in the blood and a slightly lower iron concentration in the liver.It is concluded that the mixture was very efficient for decreasing body retention of three important fission products and that it can be used over long periods without causing adverse health effects.  相似文献

Adult diets obtained from a population in Ayr, Scotland, U.K., known to be exposed to lead from water were analysed for arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, nickel, tin and zinc to assess the intake of these elements. With few exceptions, the concentration of each element varied little from diet to diet, and therefore the range of intakes varied only in proportion to the weights of the diets. With the exception of nickel, the difference between the observed average dietary intakes of the metals studied and those expected on the basis of a nationwide Total Diet Study is largely accounted for on the basis of the difference between the weights of the duplicate diet and the weight for the Total Diet Study.  相似文献

Within the framework of a monitoring programme, carried out by order of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, fishery products from Dutch coastal waters, estuaries and inland waters were investigated for the presence of trace elements. In this report the results for the period 1977-1984 are presented. The investigated fishery products included sole, cod, plaice, herring, eel, pike-perch, shrimp and mussel, in which the elements chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, mercury and lead were determined. The results are compared with data from the literature and with the trace element levels usually found in other animal products. The daily intake of trace elements in The Netherlands through the consumption of Dutch fishery products is calculated.  相似文献

Levels of lead, cadmium, zinc and copper were measured in the blood of normal children and adults of Greater Bombay, India using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry. The median concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu in the whole blood of children and adults were 11.54, 0.21, 484.2 and 86.2 μg dl−1, respectively. The blood lead concentration showed an increase with age. Children living in industrial zones with high vehicular traffic have significantly higher blood lead concentrations than their counterparts living in the cleaner suburban parts of the city. The mean levels of Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu in blood of Bombay children and adults are compared with those from other countries.  相似文献

Increased mortality due to various malignancies is reported from long-term exposed, non-ferrous smelter workers. In the present study the post-mortem distribution of cadmium, lead and zinc in lung, liver and kidney is reported and related to exposure and mortality.The study involved 86 male copper smelter workers who died after April 1975. Lung samples were taken from all workers and liver and kidney samples were taken from about one-quarter of the workers. Two control groups were used. The exposed workers were divided into six groups based upon diagnoses in medical records and autopsy protocols.Lead and zinc were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and cadmium by neutron activation analysis. For the skewly distributed tissue levels, non-parametric statistical processing was used.Of the workers, 53% died from cardiovascular diseases and 30% from malignancies (8% from lung cancer). Cardiovascular diseases predominated in the two control groups: about 75 and 100%, respectively.Lung and liver cadmium concentrations were significantly higher in the lung cancer group of smelter workers than in the other groups of smelter workers (p < 0.05) and rural controls (p < 0.01). Cadmium in kidney, and lead in lung and liver were significantly higher (p < 0.03) in the lung cancer group than in rural controls, but did not differ from that of the other workers. Zinc in lung, liver and kidney did not differ between exposed workers and controls. Rather strong Spearman rank-order correlation coefficients were found between the cadmium content of lung, liver and kidney tissue, especially in non-smoking smelter workers and rural controls. Smoking was more common in the lung cancer group than in the total group of smelter workers. Cadmium levels in the lungs of exposed workers were significantly higher (p < 0.001) in smokers than in both ex-smokers and non-smokers.Earlier studies of the same workers gave significantly lower selenium levels in lung tissue compared with other groups of smelter workers and controls. As other carcinogenic substances are present in the working environment, e.g. arsenic, chromium and benzo[a]-pyrene, the specific effect of cadmium in the development of lung cancer cannot be evaluated at present.  相似文献

Samples of caribou and reindeer muscle (127 samples) and liver (126 samples) were collected from four locations during two seasons plus 3 years in Greenland. The levels of lead, zinc, cadmium, mercury, selenium, and copper were determined, and analyzed in relation to location, two seasons, age and year of sampling. The lead concentrations (geometric mean) ranged from below the detection limit to 0.007 microgram/g wet weight (wet wt.) in muscle and from 0.027 to 0.926 microgram/g wet wt. in liver. Zinc geometric mean concentrations ranged from 17.5 to 39.6 micrograms/g wet wt. in muscle and from 23.2 to 31.7 micrograms/g wet wt. in liver. For cadmium, the geometric mean concentrations were at, or below the detection limit in muscle, while concentrations in liver ranged from 0.121 to 0.695 microgram/g wet wt. Mercury levels ranged from 0.003 to 0.043 microgram/g wet wt. in muscle and from 0.040 to 0.618 microgram/g wet wt. in liver. Selenium concentration levels in muscle ranged from 0.030 to 0.252 microgram/g wet wt., and from 0.085 to 0.984 microgram/g wet wt. in liver. Copper levels in muscle ranged from 2.09 to 3.60 micrograms/g wet wt., and from 21.8 to 71.0 micrograms/g wet wt. in liver. Mercury concentrations were higher than those found at lower latitudes in Norway and Canada, especially in Isortoq in southern Greenland. Selenium levels were also high compared to other Arctic regions. Concentrations of lead, zinc, cadmium and copper are similar to those reported in caribou from Canada and Norway. Concentrations of elements generally decreased in the following order: Isortoq > Akia > Itinnera > Kangerlussuaq, and there was only found minor variation in the annual levels during 3 years in Itinnera. Late winter levels were generally significantly higher than early winter levels especially in the lichen-rich localities, and it is suggested that the availability of lichens as winter forage is the key determining the level of elements. Accordingly, when using caribou and reindeer as monitoring organism, knowledge of winter forage is very important for interpretation of results.  相似文献

To reconstruct the profiles of heavy metal levels in the South Ocean ecosystem of Antarctica, the concentrations of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) in seal hairs and lake sediments spanning the past 1500 years from Fildes Peninsula of King George Island and in weathering lake sediments from Nelson Island of West Antarctica were determined. The lead contents in the seal hairs and the weathering sediments show a sharp increase since the late 1800s, very likely due to anthropogenic contamination from modern industries. After the 1980s, the Pb content in seal hairs dropped by one-third, apparently due to the reduced usage of leaded gasoline in the Southern Hemisphere. Copper arises mainly from the weathering process, and its level may be substantially affected by climatic conditions. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Zn do not show any clear temporal trends.  相似文献

Lake Velenje is located in one of the most polluted regions in Slovenia, the Salek Valley. The major source of pollution in the valley is the coal-fired thermal power plant in Sostanj (STPP, capacity 775 MW). It has five separate units. All units have electrostatic precipitators for fly ash removal. Unit 4 also has installed a wet flue gas desulfurisation system (FGD system). Total mercury (THg) concentrations were measured in lignite, slag and ash samples from the STPP. In flue gas, different mercury species (THg, MeHg, Hg2+, Hg0) were determined separately for unit 4 and unit 5 which use different flue gas cleaning technology. Mercury and methyl mercury (MeHg) concentrations were also measured in lake water at different depths, in inflow water, outflow water, rain, snow and lake sediments in order to establish the influence of the power plant on the lake. Most mercury emitted from the power plant is in the elemental form. The ratio between oxidised and elemental Hg depends on the flue gas cleaning technology. Mass balance calculations have been performed for the STPP. The results show that the major sources of mercury in Lake Velenje are wet deposition and lake inflows. Total and MeHg concentrations in the water column are very low and can be compared to other non-contaminated freshwater lakes in the world.  相似文献

Trace elements Cd, Zn, Cu, As, Se and Hg were analysed in muscle and liver of Brünnich's guillemot, Common guillemot, Puffin, Black guillemot, Little auk, Razorbill, Common eider, King eider, Glaucous gull, Herring gull, Black-legged kittiwake, Northern fulmar and Arctic tern collected in 1991-1992 at the main breeding colonies in the Barents Sea. The highest levels of the most toxic elements Cd and Hg were found in birds nesting north of Spitsbergen. Extremely high levels of As were detected in tissues of all seabird species collected at colonies in Chernaya Guba (Novaya Zemlya), where nuclear tests were carried out in the 1960s. In general, levels of all of the trace elements in the Barents Sea seabirds were similar or lower in comparison with those reported for the same seabird species from the other Arctic areas. Data on metallothionein concentrations in different seabird species need to be collected in order to understand the mechanism of bioaccumulation and possible toxic effects of trace elements in Arctic seabirds.  相似文献

The main factor of environmental contamination is the presence of the heavy metals lead, cadmium, and arsenic. The aim of serum protein profile analysis of people chronically exposed to heavy metals is to find protein markers of early pathological changes. The study was conducted in a group of 389 healthy men working in copper foundry and 45 age-matched non-exposed healthy men. Toxicological test samples included whole blood, serum, and urine. Thirty-seven clinical parameters were measured. Based on the parameters values of the healthy volunteers, the centroid in 37-dimensional space was calculated. The individuals in the metal-exposed and control groups were ordered based on the Euclidean distance from the centroid defined by the first component according to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Serum samples of two individuals, one from the control and one from the metal-exposed group, were chosen for proteomic analysis. In optimized conditions of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), two protein maps were obtained representing both groups. Twenty-eight corresponding protein spots from both protein maps were chosen and identified based on PDQuest analysis and the SWISS-2DPAGE database. From a panel of six proteins with differences in expression greater than a factor of two, three potential markers with the highest differences were selected: hemoglobin-spot 26 (pI 7.05, Mw 10.53), unidentified protein-spot 27 (pI 6.73, Mw 10.17), and unidentified protein-spot 25 (pI 5.75, Mw 12.07). Further studies are required to prove so far obtained results. Identified proteins could serve as potential markers of preclinical changes and could be in the future included in biomonitoring of people exposed to heavy metals.  相似文献

Weekly wet deposition and throughfall rain samples were collected in the Blacklick Run (BLK) and Herrington Creek Tributary (HCRT), two streams in western Maryland (MD). Samples were analyzed for total mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MMHg). arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), and Icad (Pb). Hg concentrations generally fell between 50 and 100 pM. comparable to concentrations in wet deposition measured at other MD sites. While Hg concentrations decreased with rainfall amount, a similar washout trend was not seen for MMHg. Cd, Pb, As, and Se concentrations were comparable overall to those measured in the region. Concentrations of Hg, Cd, and Pb in throughfall were similar between sites and equivalent or higher than wet deposition concentrations. As and Se concentrations were similar in throughfall at the two sites, though throughfall at BLK seemed to be punctuated with slightly higher concentrations of these two metals. Concentrations of Hg, MMHg, Cd, Pb, As, Se, and SPM were measured in monthly stream collections and compared with concentrations found in other MD rivers. In addition to the monthly collections, four storm events were sampled. These measurements demonstrate the importance of storm events in trace metal transport, especially for Hg, Pb and MMHg. For these metals, a strong correlation between metal and suspended particulate concentration was evident. Retention efficiencies of the watersheds for the metals were calculated for each watershed. Of all the metals, Hg is the most and As is the least strongly retained in the watershed.  相似文献

Arsenic, cadmium, lead, copper and zinc in cattle from Galicia, NW Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Knowledge of trace and toxic metal concentrations in livestock is important for assessing the effects of pollutants on domestic animals and contaminant intakes by humans. Metal levels in cattle have been measured in various countries but not in Spain. In this study, the (wet wt.) concentrations of three toxic elements (arsenic, cadmium, lead) and two trace elements (copper, zinc) were quantified in the liver (Li), kidney (Ki), muscle (M) and blood (Bl) of calves (males and females between 6 and 10 months old) and cows (2-16 years old) from Galicia, NW Spain. For the toxic elements, geometric mean concentrations of arsenic in calves (sexes combined) and cows were 10.8 and 10.2 microg/kg (Li), 11.3 and 15.2 microg/kg (Ki), 3.75 and 4.25 microg/kg (M), 3.23 and 2.92 microg/l (Bl). The corresponding cadmium concentrations were 7.78 and 83.3 microg/kg (Li), 54.3 and 388 microg/kg (Ki), 0.839 and 0.944 microg/kg (M), 0.373 and 0.449 microg/l (Bl). Geometric mean concentrations of lead in calves and cows were similarly low and were 33.0 and 47.5 microg/kg (Li), 38.9 and 58.3 microg/kg (Ki), 6.37 and 12.5 microg/kg (M), 5.47 and 12.2 microg/l (Bl). Sex had almost no effect on the amount of toxic metal accumulated except that kidney cadmium concentrations were significantly higher in females than males. Age did influence accumulation; cadmium and lead (but not arsenic) concentrations in most tissues were significantly greater in cows than female calves. For the trace elements, geometric mean copper levels in calf and cow tissues were 49.9 and 36.6 mg/kg (Li), 4.27 and 3.63 mg/kg (Ki), 0.649 and 1.68 mg/kg (M) and 0.878 and 0.890 mg/l (Bl). The corresponding zinc concentrations were 46.3 and 52.5 mg/kg (Li), 14.2 and 20.7 mg/kg (Ki), 47.3 and 52.5 mg/kg (M) and 2.80 and 2.22 mg/l (Bl). Female calves had significantly higher levels than males of muscle zinc and blood copper and zinc. Female calves accumulated more copper but less zinc in the liver and kidneys compared with cows; this may have been associated with the chronic, low-level cadmium accumulation observed in cows. Overall, the levels of arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc in cattle in Galicia do not constitute a risk for animal health. However, up to 20% of cattle in some regions in Galicia had levels of copper in the liver that exceeded 150 mg/kg wet wt. These animals may be at risk from copper poisoning.  相似文献

Over 500 faeces of otter (Lutra lutra) from Britain, with a small sample from northeast Greece, were analyzed for Cd, Hg and Pb. A small sample of mink (Mustela vison) faeces was also analyzed. Mean concentrations of metals (mg kg-1 dry weight) in otter faeces ranged from 1.53 to 3.97 Cd, 0.25 to 0.74 Hg and 12.4 to 20.9 Pb. Mink faeces generally contained less Cd and Hg, but more Pb. Metal concentrations in faeces may reflect both natural and anthropogenic sources. Estimates of daily Cd and Pb intake were made from faecal concentrations and these were in good agreement with concentrations in major fish prey. The estimates of daily Cd and Pb intake are high, but nevertheless most samples came from thriving otter populations. The value of faecal analysis in assessing metal burdens during surveys of otters is discussed.  相似文献

The levels of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were measured in duplicate whole blood samples of 946 apparently normal children ranging in age from 2 years to 12 years and living in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. The metals were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry: graphite furnace AAS for Cd and Pb, and flame AAS for Cu and Zn. The median and extreme values expressed as milligram of metal per litre of whole blood for the total population were: Cd ? 0.0005, Cu 1.11 (0.69–1.78), Pb 0.112 (0.020–0.400), and Zn 4.30 (2.10–6.53). No significant variations were noted in the median metal values either with age or with sex. The median Cu, Pb and Zn values were within the normal range.  相似文献

Muscle, liver, and kidney tissues from 100 polar bears (Ursus maritimus), caught in the Avanersuaq area, north-west Greenland, and Ittoqqortoormiit area, central-east Greenland, were analysed for zinc, cadmium, mercury and selenium. The zinc concentrations in muscle and liver were higher than in kidney. Mean zinc concentrations ranged from 19.7 to 76.0 micrograms/g (all data are presented as geometric means on a wet wt. basis). The presented cadmium concentrations by area and age groups were all low in muscle and in many cases below the detection limit (range: < 0.015-0.048 microgram/g). Cadmium concentrations were intermediate in liver (range: 0.120-1.98 micrograms/g) and highest in kidney tissue (range: 2.16-28.9 micrograms/g). Mercury was likewise lowest in muscle tissue (range: 0.034-0.191 microgram/g). Mercury concentration ranged quite similarly in liver and kidney tissue (liver range: 2.13-22.0 micrograms/g; kidney range: 2.87-32.0 micrograms/g). The selenium concentration increased from muscle (range: < 0.2-0.452 microgram/g) over liver (range: 1.20-9.80 micrograms/g) to kidney (range: 2.34-13.9 micrograms/g). No age accumulation was found for zinc. A weak increase was found for selenium, whereas cadmium and mercury clearly accumulated with age. An exception was mercury concentrations in muscle tissue, where no clear pattern was observed. Polar bears had significantly lower cadmium concentrations than ringed seals from the same area in all three tissues. Likewise mercury was significantly lower in the muscle tissue of polar bears than in ringed seals, whereas liver and kidney concentrations were higher. Biomagnification factors are provided for different tissues and age groups. Tissue ratios are given for different age groups and metals to enable a rough extrapolation from one tissue to another. Tissue ratios for cadmium, selenium and for mercury vary up to a factor of 6 with age. No significant differences could be detected between the elements analysed in bears from two management zones in north-west Greenland. This finding is in agreement with the genetic pattern in the two areas. In central-east Greenland, however, cadmium, selenium, and some of the mercury concentrations in polar bears from the southern area were higher than from the northern area, indicating that the east Greenland area represents two different ecological regions with different polar bear populations. Geographical differences between polar bears from north-west and east Greenland were only found for mercury and cadmium in liver tissue, where the concentrations were highest in bears from north-west Greenland. The geographical trend of increasing cadmium concentrations in polar bear liver tissue from west to east, which has been found previously in Canada, could be extended to cover north-west Greenland as well. East of this region a decrease was found. Mercury concentrations in polar bear liver tissue showed an increase from Svalbard over east and north-west Greenland, peaking in bears from south-west Melville Island. A marked decrease was found west of Melville Island, and the lowest concentrations were found in the Chukchi Sea.  相似文献

Four metals were determined by AAS techniques in 56 samples of 23 wild mushroom species collected in a heavily polluted area in eastern Slovakia in 1997 and 1998. The area has been contaminated from historical polymetallic ores mining and smelting and by emissions from a mercury smelter between 1969 and 1993 and from a copper smelter since 1951. No significant differences in metal concentrations (P < 0.05) were found in four species when comparing the periods 1992-1993 and 1997-1998. Considerable contamination of most species was observed mainly for mercury and cadmium. The highest levels of mercury, up to 50 mg kg-1 dry matter, were found in Boletus reticulatus, Lycoperdon perlatum and Marasmius oreades, and of cadmium up to 20 mg kg-1 dry matter in Xerocomus chrysenteron and Lycoperdon perlatum. The latter species also had extremely high lead and copper concentrations in hundreds of milligrams per kilogram dry matter. Concentrations of mercury and copper in caps of four Boletaceae species were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those in stipes.  相似文献

The main factors influencing Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb concentrations in the sediments of the highly polluted Vesdre River (eastern Belgium) have been investigated. Only negative correlations were demonstrated between the clay content and heavy metals. The composition of the clay minerals could partially explain this paradox. However, the pretreatment of the minerals might influence the geochemical data obtained from analysis. Iron-hydroxides and phosphates seem to be the main sinks for Pb, Cd and Zn whereas organic components might play a less important role.  相似文献

The adsorption of cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc ions on maize Zea mays stalk meal was examined by equilibrium studies at 29°C. The amounts of the metal ions removed from solution depended on the metal ion type, the ionic size of the metals and were enhanced by EDTA (% N = 12.05) modification of the cellulosic sorbent. The sorption coefficient, Kd, of the metal ions between the adsorbent phase and the bulk aqueous phase was found. The sorption on the unmodified sorbent of lead ions from solutions containing zinc ions shows that lead ions are preferentially removed from solution.  相似文献

The distribution of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) was studied at three locations with different heavy metal loads in the Limfjord, Denmark.The eelgrass was fractionated into roots, rhizome, stem, and leaves according to age, and the heavy metal concentrations in each fraction were determined. The distribution patterns of the four heavy metals in eelgrass were independent of the heavy metal loads at the sampling stations. The concentrations of all metals were greater in the roots than in the rhizomes. In the aerial1 parts two different age-dependent distribution patterns were observed. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn increased with age while the opposite was true for Cu. The distribution of lead correlated with the distribution of ash content. These age-dependent distribution patterns were maintained throughout the observation period and were most pronounced for Cu and Zn in winter.The heavy metal distribution in eelgrass is discussed in relation to gross morphology, especially age-structure. It is suggested that the accumulation of Cd, Pb, and Zn is due to a slow irreversible uptake or to the existence of more binding sites in old leaves. The distribution of Cu can be explained by translocation within the plant, dilution due to growth or leakage from the older leaves.  相似文献
