Observer and optimal boundary control design for the objective of output tracking of a linear distributed parameter system given by a two‐dimensional (2‐D) parabolic partial differential equation with time‐varying domain is realized in this work. The transformation of boundary actuation to distributed control setting allows to represent the system's model in a standard evolutionary form. By exploring dynamical model evolution and generating data, a set of time‐varying empirical eigenfunctions that capture the dominant dynamics of the distributed system is found. This basis is used in Galerkin's method to accurately represent the distributed system as a finite‐dimensional plant in terms of a linear time‐varying system. This reduced‐order model enables synthesis of a linear optimal output tracking controller, as well as design of a state observer. Finally, numerical results are prepared for the optimal output tracking of a 2‐D model of the temperature distribution in Czochralski crystal growth process which has nontrivial geometry. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 494–502, 2015  相似文献

The boundary feedback regulator design for heat exchangers with delayed feedback is developed. Counter-flow/parallel-flow heat exchanger systems described by a pair of coupled transport hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with delayed boundary feedback loop modeled by the boundary time lag are considered. The coupled transport hyperbolic PDEs and boundary delay by application of boundary transformation are transformed in the corresponding linear infinite-dimensional system utilized in the regulator design. The regulator design initially addresses a full state feedback controller realization augmented by the observer design to achieve simultaneously output exponential stabilization as well as tracking and disturbance rejection of polynomial and/or harmonic type of reference signals. The simulations studies demonstrate the proposed design for counter-flow and parallel-flow heat exchangers, two common configurations present in industrial practice.  相似文献

The guaranteed cost distributed fuzzy (GCDF) observer‐based control design is proposed for a class of nonlinear spatially distributed processes described by first‐order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Initially, a T–S fuzzy hyperbolic PDE model is proposed to accurately represent the nonlinear PDE system. Then, based on the fuzzy PDE model, the GCDF observer‐based control design is developed in terms of a set of space‐dependent linear matrix inequalities. In the proposed control scheme, a distributed fuzzy observer is used to estimate the state of the PDE system. The designed fuzzy controller can not only ensure the exponential stability of the closed‐loop PDE system but also provide an upper bound of quadratic cost function. Moreover, a suboptimal fuzzy control design is addressed in the sense of minimizing an upper bound of the cost function. The finite difference method in space and the existing linear matrix inequality optimization techniques are used to approximately solve the suboptimal control design problem. Finally, the proposed design method is applied to the control of a nonisothermal plug‐flow reactor. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 2366–2378, 2013  相似文献

In this work, we consider moving horizon state estimation (MHE)‐based model predictive control (MPC) of nonlinear systems. Specifically, we consider the Lyapunov‐based MPC (LMPC) developed in (Mhaskar et al., IEEE Trans Autom Control. 2005;50:1670–1680; Syst Control Lett. 2006;55:650–659) and the robust MHE (RMHE) developed in (Liu J, Chem Eng Sci. 2013;93:376–386). First, we focus on the case that the RMHE and the LMPC are evaluated every sampling time. An estimate of the stability region of the output control system is first established; and then sufficient conditions under which the closed‐loop system is guaranteed to be stable are derived. Subsequently, we propose a triggered implementation strategy for the RMHE‐based LMPC to reduce its computational load. The triggering condition is designed based on measurements of the output and its time derivatives. To ensure the closed‐loop stability, the formulations of the RMHE and the LMPC are also modified accordingly to account for the potential open‐loop operation. A chemical process is used to illustrate the proposed approaches. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 4273–4286, 2013  相似文献

A realistic pipeline modeled by a nonlinear coupled first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) system is studied for the long transportation pipeline leak detection and localization. Based on the so-called water hammer equation, a linear distributed parameter system is obtained by linearization. The structure and energy preserving time discretization scheme (Cayley–Tustin) is used to realize a discrete infinite-dimensional hyperbolic PDEs system without spatial approximation or model order reduction. In order to reconstruct pressure and mass flow velocity evolution with limited measurements, a discrete-time Luenberger observer is designed by solving the operator Riccati equation. Based on this distributed observer system, data on different normal and leakage conditions (various leak amounts and positions) are generated and fed to train a support vector machine model for leak detection, amount, and position estimation. Finally, the leak detection, amount estimation, and localization effectiveness of the developed method are proved by a set of simulations. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 65: e16532 2019  相似文献

This work explores the design of a model predictive controller of the continuous pulp digester process consisting of the co-current zone and counter-current zone modeled by a set of nonlinear coupled hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). The distributed parameter system of interest is not spectral, and slow–fast dynamic separation does not hold. To address this challenge, the nonlinear continuous-time model is linearized and discretized in time utilizing the Cayley–Tustin discretization framework, which ensures system theoretic properties and structure preservation without spatial discretization or model reduction. The discrete model is used in the full state model predictive controller design, which is augmented by the Luenberger observer design to achieve the output constrained regulation. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed controller designs.  相似文献

The thermal regulation problem for a lithium ion (Li‐ion) battery with boundary control actuation is considered. The model of the transient temperature dynamics of the battery is given by a nonhomogeneous parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) on a two‐dimensional spatial domain which accounts for the time‐varying heat generation during the battery discharge cycle. The spatial domain is given as a disk with radial and angular coordinates which captures the nonradially symmetric heat‐transfer phenomena due to the application of the control input along a portion of the spatial domain boundary. The Li‐ion battery model is formulated within an appropriately defined infinite‐dimensional function space setting which is suitable for spectral controller synthesis. The key challenges in the output feedback model‐based controller design addressed in this work are: the dependence of the state on time‐varying system parameters, the restriction of the input along a portion of the battery domain boundary, the observer‐based optimal boundary control design where the separation principle is utilized to demonstrate the stability of the closed loop system, and the realization of the outback feedback control problem based on state measurement and interpolation of the temperature field. Numerical results for simulation case studies are presented. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 3782–3796, 2013  相似文献

A novel combination of model predictive control (MPC) and iterative learning control (ILC), referred to learning‐type MPC (L‐MPC), is proposed for closed‐loop control in an artificial pancreatic β‐cell. The main motivation for L‐MPC is the repetitive nature of glucose‐meal‐insulin dynamics over a 24‐h period. L‐MPC learns from an individual's lifestyle, inducing the control performance to improve from day to day. The proposed method is first tested on the Adult Average subject presented in the UVa/Padova diabetes simulator. After 20 days, the blood glucose concentrations can be kept within 68–145 mg/dl when the meals are repetitive. L‐MPC can produce superior control performance compared with that achieved under MPC. In addition, L‐MPC is robust to random variations in meal sizes within ±75% of the nominal value or meal timings within ±60 min. Furthermore, the robustness of L‐MPC to subject variability is validated on Adults 1–10 in the UVa/Padova simulator. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010  相似文献

A mechanical geometric crystal growth model is developed to describe the crystal length and radius evolution. The crystal radius regulation is achieved by feedback linearization and accounts for parametric uncertainty in the crystal growth rate. The associated parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) model of heat conduction is considered over the time‐varying crystal domain and coupled with crystal growth dynamics. An appropriately defined infinite‐dimensional representation of the thermal evolution is derived considering slow time‐varying process effects. The computational framework of the Galerkin's method is used for parabolic PDE order reduction and observer synthesis for temperature distribution reconstruction over the entire crystal domain. It is shown that the proposed observer can be utilized to reconstruct temperature distribution from boundary temperature measurements. The developed observer is implemented on the finite‐element model of the process and demonstrates that despite parametric and geometric uncertainties present in the model, the temperature distribution is reconstructed with the high accuracy. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 60: 2839–2852, 2014  相似文献

Optimal control relies on a model, which is generally uncertain because of incomplete knowledge of the system and changes in the dynamics over time. Probing the system under closed‐loop control can reduce the model uncertainty through generating input‐output data that is more informative than the data generated from normal operation. This paper addresses the problem of model predictive control (MPC) with active learning, with a particular focus on how incorporating probing in the control action can reduce model uncertainty. We discuss some of the central theoretical questions in this problem, and demonstrate the potential of active learning for maintaining MPC performance in the presence of uncertainty in model parameters and structure. Simulation results show that active learning is particularly beneficial when a system undergoes abrupt changes (such as the sudden occurrence of a fault) that can compromise operational safety, reliability, and profitability. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 64: 3071–3081, 2018  相似文献

The design of a composite control system for nonlinear singularly perturbed systems using model predictive control (MPC) is described. Specifically, a composite control system comprised of a “fast” MPC acting to regulate the fast dynamics and a “slow” MPC acting to regulate the slow dynamics is designed. The composite MPC system uses multirate sampling of the plant state measurements, i.e., fast sampling of the fast state variables is used in the fast MPC and slow‐sampling of the slow state variables is used in the slow MPC. Using singular perturbation theory, the stability and optimality of the closed‐loop nonlinear singularly perturbed system are analyzed. A chemical process example which exhibits two‐time‐scale behavior is used to demonstrate the structure and implementation of the proposed fast–slow MPC architecture in a practical setting. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 58: 1802–1811, 2012  相似文献

This work focuses on control of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear processes with uncertain dynamics and actuator constraints. A Lyapunov-based nonlinear controller design approach that accounts explicitly and simultaneously for process nonlinearities, plant-model mismatch, and input constraints, is proposed. Under the assumption that all process states are accessible for measurement, the approach leads to the explicit synthesis of bounded robust multivariable nonlinear state feedback controllers with well-characterized stability and performance properties. The controllers enforce stability and robust asymptotic reference-input tracking in the constrained uncertain closed-loop system and provide, at the same time, an explicit characterization of the region of guaranteed closed-loop stability. When full state measurements are not available, a combination of the state feedback controllers with high-gain state observes and appropriate saturation filters, is employed to synthesize bounded robust multivariable output feedback controllers that require only measurements of the outputs for practical implementation. The resulting output feedback design is shown to inherit the same closed-loop stability and performance properties of the state feedback controllers and, in addition, recover the closed-loop stability region obtained under state feedback, provided that the observer gain is sufficiently large. The developed state and output feedback controllers are applied successfully to non-isothermal chemical reactor examples with uncertainty, input constraints, and incomplete state measurements. Finally, we conclude the paper with a discussion that attempts to put in perspective the proposed Lyapunov-based control approach with respect to the nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) approach and discuss the implications of our results for the practical implementation of MPC, in control of uncertain nonlinear processes with input constraints.  相似文献

Closed‐loop stability of nonlinear time‐delay systems under Lyapunov‐based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) is considered. LEMPC is initially formulated with an ordinary differential equation model and is designed on the basis of an explicit stabilizing control law. To address closed‐loop stability under LEMPC, first, we consider the stability properties of the sampled‐data system resulting from the nonlinear continuous‐time delay system with state and input delay under a sample‐and‐hold implementation of the explicit controller. The steady‐state of this sampled‐data closed‐loop system is shown to be practically stable. Second, conditions such that closed‐loop stability, in the sense of boundedness of the closed‐loop state, under LEMPC are derived. A chemical process example is used to demonstrate that indeed closed‐loop stability is maintained under LEMPC for sufficiently small time‐delays. To cope with performance degradation owing to the effect of input delay, a predictor feedback LEMPC methodology is also proposed. The predictor feedback LEMPC design employs a predictor to compute a prediction of the state after the input delay period and an LEMPC scheme that is formulated with a differential difference equation (DDE) model, which describes the time‐delay system, initialized with the predicted state. The predictor feedback LEMPC is also applied to the chemical process example and yields improved closed‐loop stability and economic performance properties. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 4152–4165, 2015  相似文献

The problem of valve stiction is addressed, which is a nonlinear friction phenomenon that causes poor performance of control loops in the process industries. A model predictive control (MPC) stiction compensation formulation is developed including detailed dynamics for a sticky valve and additional constraints on the input rate of change and actuation magnitude to reduce control loop performance degradation and to prevent the MPC from requesting physically unrealistic control actions due to stiction. Although developed with a focus on stiction, the MPC‐based compensation method presented is general and has potential to compensate for other nonlinear valve dynamics which have some similarities to those caused by stiction. Feasibility and closed‐loop stability of the proposed MPC formulation are proven for a sufficiently small sampling period when Lyapunov‐based constraints are incorporated. Using a chemical process example with an economic model predictive controller (EMPC), the selection of appropriate constraints for the proposed method is demonstrated. The example verified the incorporation of the stiction dynamics and actuation magnitude constraints in the EMPC causes it to select set‐points that the valve output can reach and causes the operating constraints to be met. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 2004–2023, 2016  相似文献

Economic model predictive control (EMPC) is a control scheme that combines real‐time dynamic economic process optimization with the feedback properties of model predictive control (MPC) by replacing the quadratic cost function with a general economic cost function. Almost all the recent work on EMPC involves cost functions that are time invariant (do not explicitly account for time‐varying process economics). In the present work, we focus on the development of a Lyapunov‐based EMPC (LEMPC) scheme that is formulated with an explicitly time‐varying economic cost function. First, the formulation of the proposed two‐mode LEMPC is given. Second, closed‐loop stability is proven through a theoretical treatment. Last, we demonstrate through extensive closed‐loop simulations of a chemical process that the proposed LEMPC can achieve stability with time‐varying economic cost as well as improve economic performance of the process over a conventional MPC scheme. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J 60: 507–519, 2014  相似文献

In this article, the problem of observer design in linear multi‐output systems with asynchronous sampling is addressed. The proposed multi‐rate observer is based on a continuous‐time Luenberger observer design coupled with an inter‐sample predictor for each sampled measurement, which generates an estimate of the output in between consecutive measurements. The sampling times are not necessarily uniformly spaced, but there exists a maximum sampling period among all the sensors. Sufficient and explicit conditions are derived to guarantee exponential stability of the multi‐rate observer. The proposed framework of multi‐rate observer design is examined through a mathematical example and a gas‐phase polyethylene reactor. In the latter case, the amount of active catalyst sites is estimated, with a convergence rate that is comparable to the case of continuous measurements. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3384–3394, 2017  相似文献

Process plants are operating in an increasingly global and dynamic environment, motivating the development of dynamic real‐time optimization (DRTO) systems to account for transient behavior in the determination of economically optimal operating policies. This article considers optimization of closed‐loop response dynamics at the DRTO level in a two‐layer architecture, with constrained model predictive control (MPC) applied at the regulatory control level. A simultaneous solution approach is applied to the multilevel DRTO optimization problem, in which the convex MPC optimization subproblems are replaced by their necessary and sufficient Karush–Kuhn–Tucker optimality conditions, resulting in a single‐level mathematical program with complementarity constraints. The performance of the closed‐loop DRTO strategy is compared to that of the open‐loop prediction counterpart through a multi‐part case study that considers linear dynamic systems with different characteristics. The performance of the proposed strategy is further demonstrated through application to a nonlinear polymerization reactor grade transition problem. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3896–3911, 2017  相似文献

Achieving operational safety of chemical processes while operating them in an economically‐optimal manner is a matter of great importance. Our recent work integrated process safety with process control by incorporating safety‐based constraints within model predictive control (MPC) design; however, the safety‐based MPC was developed with a centralized architecture, with the result that computation time limitations within a sampling period may reduce the effectiveness of such a controller design for promoting process safety. To address this potential practical limitation of the safety‐based control design, in this work, we propose the integration of a distributed model predictive control architecture with Lyapunov‐based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) formulated with safety‐based constraints. We consider both iterative and sequential distributed control architectures, and the partitioning of inputs between the various optimization problems in the distributed structure based on their impact on process operational safety. Moreover, sufficient conditions that ensure feasibility and closed‐loop stability of the iterative and sequential safety distributed LEMPC designs are given. A comparison between the proposed safety distributed EMPC controllers and the safety centralized EMPC is demonstrated via a chemical process example. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 3404–3418, 2017  相似文献

In this work, we develop model predictive control (MPC) designs, which are capable of optimizing closed‐loop performance with respect to general economic considerations for a broad class of nonlinear process systems. Specifically, in the proposed designs, the economic MPC optimizes a cost function, which is related directly to desired economic considerations and is not necessarily dependent on a steady‐state—unlike conventional MPC designs. First, we consider nonlinear systems with synchronous measurement sampling and uncertain variables. The proposed economic MPC is designed via Lyapunov‐based techniques and has two different operation modes. The first operation mode corresponds to the period in which the cost function should be optimized (e.g., normal production period); and in this operation mode, the MPC maintains the closed‐loop system state within a predefined stability region and optimizes the cost function to its maximum extent. The second operation mode corresponds to operation in which the system is driven by the economic MPC to an appropriate steady‐state. In this operation mode, suitable Lyapunov‐based constraints are incorporated in the economic MPC design to guarantee that the closed‐loop system state is always bounded in the predefined stability region and is ultimately bounded in a small region containing the origin. Subsequently, we extend the results to nonlinear systems subject to asynchronous and delayed measurements and uncertain variables. Under the assumptions that there exist an upper bound on the interval between two consecutive asynchronous measurements and an upper bound on the maximum measurement delay, an economic MPC design which takes explicitly into account asynchronous and delayed measurements and enforces closed‐loop stability is proposed. All the proposed economic MPC designs are illustrated through a chemical process example and their performance and robustness are evaluated through simulations. © 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2012  相似文献
