Exocrine secretion from the pancreas and concentrations of cholecystokinin, gastrin, secretin, and somatostatin in plasma were measured in relation to feeding in 70- to 120-d-old preruminant calves fed either a milk diet or a soybean diet. Pancreatic fluid was continuously collected, measured, and reintroduced in catheterized calves. Blood samples were withdrawn for measurements of gut regulatory peptide concentrations in plasma. A slight increase in outflow of pancreatic fluid was observed 30 min before the milk diet was introduced but not before the soybean diet was fed. In contrast, concentrations and outflows of protein and trypsin immediately after feeding were higher when calves were fed the soybean diet. Overall, during the first 5 h postfeeding, the outflow of pancreatic fluid was 40% higher when the milk diet was fed than when the soybean diet was fed. No difference in outflow of protein was observed, but that of trypsin was 82% higher when the soybean diet was fed. This enhanced enzyme secretion could have been related to the increased plasma concentrations of gastrin and cholecystokinin after the soybean diet was fed. Secretin release was less in calves fed the milk diet that in calves fed the soybean diet during the first 2 h postfeeding, suggesting that this gut peptide along with gastrin and cholecystokinin, contributed to the stimulation of enzyme secretion. Plasma gut regulatory peptides could be influenced by the soybean diet, which does not coagulate in the stomach, inducing faster gastric emptying of protein and fat, and by the chemical form of protein from the soybean diet and the lower susceptibility of these proteins to protease compared with casein. However, the resulting enhancement of pancreatic trypsin secretion and activity seemed to be insufficient to increase the digestibility of soybean protein up to a level similar to that of milk.  相似文献

The estrogen hormones have been shown to be highly glycogenic as well as lipolytic in nature. It is unknown whether the metabolic actions of estrogens impact upon energy metabolism during exercise. The composition of prior diet, however, does affect exercise energy metabolism. This study examined the influence of menstrual cycle phase (mid-follicular [FP; low estrogen] vs. mid-luteal [LP; high estrogen]) and diet composition on the rate of substrate oxidation for carbohydrate (CHO) and lipid at rest and during various intensities of physical exercise. Nine subjects completed an experimental session under four different menstrual cycle-diet conditions: 1) FP following a 3-day high CHO diet [75% total caloric intake], 2) FP following a 3-day low CHO diet [35% total caloric intake], 3) LP following a 3-day high CHO diet, and 4) LP following a 3-day low CHO diet. In each of the experimental sessions substrate oxidation was determined at rest and during cycle ergometer exercise at intensities of 30, 50, and 70% VO2max, respectively. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) interaction effects on substrate oxidation due to the menstrual cycle phase and diet conditions were found at rest and during 30%-50% exercise. In general, CHO oxidation was lowest and lipid oxidation highest in the LP under a low CHO diet condition.  相似文献

The effects of dietary protein types and methionine supplementation on phospholipid metabolism were investigated to clarify the mechanism of the hypocholesterolemic action of soybean protein in rats fed a cholesterol-free diet. The effect of switching from a casein diet to a soybean protein diet was also investigated. Rats were fed casein, soybean protein or soybean protein + methionine diet for 14 d. Compared with casein diet, feeding of soybean protein diet led to significantly higher proportions of linoleic acid and linoleic acid-containing molecular species, especially 16:0-18:2, in plasma and liver microsomal phosphatidylcholine (PC). In addition, significantly lower plasma cholesterol concentration, hepatic S-adenosylmethionine concentration and liver microsomal PC:phosphatidylethanolamine ratio resulted. These alterations caused by the soybean protein diet were significantly suppressed by supplementing methionine to the level of the casein diet (3.4 g/kg diet). The proportion of the sum of certain plasma PC molecular species, which contain 18:1 or 18:2 in the sn-2 position, increased in response to the switch from the casein diet to the soybean protein diet at a rate similar to the decrease in plasma cholesterol concentration; there was a significant correlation between the two variables (r = -0.992, P < 0.001). These results indicate that about 40% of the hypocholesterolemic action of soybean protein is due to the low methionine content of the protein and might be associated with alterations of the plasma phospholipid molecular species profile.  相似文献

The hydration of soybean protein or casein prior to mixing of the diet improves the apparent protein efficiency ratio (PER). The PER of soybean protein was improved more than that of casein, so that an increase in adjusted PER of soybean protein was observed also. The improvement did not appear to be associated with digestibility. It is theorized that some diets with dry protein isolates may be less acceptable to the rat due to the dusty nature of the isolate. Consequently, diets with such isolates may have a lower PER. The effect can be overcome by hydrating the protein isolates prior to mixing the diet.  相似文献

The effects of replacing dietary casein with soybean protein on mean life span, mean life span of the last one-tenth of a group, grading scores of senescence and deposition of senile amyloid were investigated in senescence accelerated mice (SAM-P/1) compared with a control strain (SAM-R/1). SAM-R/1 mice fed the soybean protein-containing diet had mean life spans of 618 +/- 42 d (males) and 578 +/- 62 d (females), 58% (males) and 44% (females) longer than those of corresponding casein fed mice (P < 0.01). Similarly, in SAM-P/1 mean life-spans were 265 +/- 16 d (males) and 307 +/- 23 d (females) in the soybean diet group, 27% (males) and 30% (females) longer than in the casein diet groups (P < 0.01). The mean life span of the last one-tenth of each group fed soybean protein was significantly longer than the corresponding group fed casein. In SAM-R/1 mice, pathological studies revealed that severe secondary amyloid deposition (amyloid A protein) in the kidneys, spleen, stomach and liver was significantly suppressed, in males only, by replacing casein with soybean protein (P < 0.01). The occurrence of contracted kidneys caused by the infiltration of amyloid A protein was suppressed in SAM-R/1 mice fed the soybean protein-containing diet (P < 0.05). The deposition of senile amyloid in SAM-P/1 mice with aging was retarded by replacing casein with soybean protein (P < 0.01). These results indicate that dietary protein source is important in modulating the advance of senescence in SAM mice.  相似文献

This study measured the body mass index (BMI), and assessed attitudes and knowledge about obesity, of 197 male and 217 female patients aged 20-59 years attending the primary care clinic of the university hospital in Kelantan, Malaysia. There was no significant difference between the mean BMI of males (23.7) and females (24.2). In the overweight group (BMI 25-29.9) were 60 men (30%) and 66 women (30%). In the obese group (BMI 30 and above) were 12 men (6%) and 22 women (10%). Both diabetes mellitus and hypertension were associated with significantly higher BMI's. Knowledge about obesity was lacking. Sixty-three (15%) failed to recognize that obesity is bad for health. When asked the causes of obesity, 88 (21%) failed to mention either diet or lack of exercise. "Being happy" was suggested as a cause by 32 (8%). When asked if certain foods would cause obesity if eaten in excess, 45 (11%) said "No" for fatty foods, and 164 (40%) said "No" for sweet foods. Concerning appearance, 30 (15%) men regarded an obese man as normal or even handsome, while 49 (23%) women regarded an obese woman as normal or beautiful. Obesity is common among our adult patients, and is associated with some of their common health problems. However, a substantial minority do not regard obesity as unhealthy, do not relate it to diet or lack of exercise, do not recognize important groups of fattening foods, and do not regard obesity as unattractive.  相似文献

The effects of dietary soybean protein on lipogenic enzyme gene expression in livers of genetically fatty rats (Wistar fatty) have been investigated. When Wistar fatty rats and their lean littermates (7-8-wk old) were fed a casein or soybean protein isolate diet containing hydrogenated fat (4% hydrogenated fat plus 1% corn oil) or corn oil (5%) for 3 wk, the hepatic messenger RNA concentrations and activities of lipogenic enzymes were significantly lower in rats fed soybean protein than in those fed casein, regardless of genotype or dietary fat. The conversion rates of thyroxine to triiodothyronine by liver microsomes and plasma triiodothyronine concentrations were lower in the fatty rats than in the lean rats and were significantly greater in rats fed soybean protein than in those fed casein. Conversely, plasma and liver triacylglycerol concentrations were lower in soybean protein-fed fatty and lean rats than in those fed casein. The body weight was less in the fatty rats fed soybean protein than in those fed casein after 3 wk of feeding. Moreover, dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids suppressed lipogenic enzyme gene expression in the lean rats but did not in the fatty rats. Dietary soybean protein appeared to be useful for the reduction of obesity.  相似文献

Five ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein steers (305 kg) were used in a switchback experiment with three periods to evaluate two experimental treatments: a basal diet with or without 45 ppm of lasalocid. The basal diet contained approximately 43% rolled corn, 45% alfalfa hay, and 10% soybean meal (DM basis). Lasalocid did not affect feed intake or ruminal digestion of OM and NDF. Ruminal digestion of ADF tended to increase with supplemental lasalocid. Total tract digestion of OM, NDF, ADF, and N and intestinal flow of amino acids were not affected by lasalocid. Also, the ratio of microbial to nonmicrobial N fractions at the duodenum remained unchanged. Ruminal pH and concentrations of NH3, VFA, peptides, and amino acids were not affected by lasalocid. Ruminal protease activity decreased with supplemental lasalocid, but this decrease was not reflected in other variables, such as ruminal concentrations of peptides and amino acids. Ruminal deaminase activity remained unchanged. Thus, we concluded that dietary lasalocid did not alter ruminal protein degradation or postruminal flow of amino acids.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate dietary protein-induced changes in whole body leucine turnover and oxidation and in skeletal muscle branched chain 2-oxo acid dehydrogenase (BCOADH) activity, at rest and during exercise. Postabsorptive subjects received a primed constant infusion of L-[1-13C,15N]leucine for 6 h, after previous consumption of a high- (HP; 1.8 g . kg-1 . day-1, n = 8) or a low-protein diet (LP; 0.7 g . kg-1 . day-1, n = 8) for 7 days. The subjects were studied at rest for 2 h, during 2-h exercise at 60% maximum oxygen consumption, then again for 2 h at rest. Exercise induced a doubling of both leucine oxidation from 20 micromol . kg-1 . h-1 and BCOADH percent activation from 7% in all subjects. Leucine oxidation was greater before (+46%) and during (+40%, P < 0.05) the first hour of exercise in subjects consuming the HP rather than the LP diet, but there was no additional change in muscle BCOADH activity. The results suggest that leucine oxidation was increased by previous ingestion of an HP diet, attributable to an increase in leucine availability rather than to a stimulation of the skeletal muscle BCOADH activity.  相似文献

Studies ranging from epidemiological to molecular suggest that dietary antioxidants protect against chronic diseases. The hypothesis was investigated that hamster kidney homogenate are better protected against induced oxidative damage after animals were fed a purified vitamin E deficient diet supplemented with 30 international units (IU) vitamin E/kg (30 IU diet) than fed the minimum required 3 IU vitamin E/kg (3 IU diet). The addition of 200 mg (+)-catechin to the 3 IU diet may offer protection. The effects of dietary (+)-catechin and alpha-tocopherol on tissue oxidizability were investigated by measuring (i) fluorescent products in lipid extracts, (ii) heme protein oxidation and (iii) heme destruction. A rapid initial increase of oxidation markers was measured over the 4 h incubation period for iron + ascorbate induced oxidation and a constant increase for lipoxygenase catalyzed products. Analysis of covariance over time and comparison at specific incubation times showed that iron + ascorbate induced homogenates from hamsters fed the 30 IU diet generated less fluorescent products and oxidized heme proteins than homogenates from the 3 IU or the 3 IU plus (+)-catechin fed animals. Incubation with lipoxygenase produced more lipid fluorescent products and heme protein oxidation in the 3 IU than in the 30 IU vitamin E group. In conclusion, supplementary dietary vitamin E but not supplementary (+)-catechin in a diet containing the minimum requirement of vitamin E for the species enhances oxidative resistance of kidney tissue.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted with White Leghorn chicks hatched from hens fed diets varying in levels of protein, fat, and vitamin B12. Adding animal fat at a level of 10% in the chick diet caused growth depression of vitamin B12 deficient chicks, regardless of protein or energy level of hen or chick diet. Increasing the level of fat to 20% in the chick diet caused further growth depression and increased mortality. Feed efficiency of vitamin B12 deficient chicks was severely depressed by each additional increment in the fat level. Increasing protein content from 20 to 30% in the chick diet resulted in severe growth depression and poor feed efficiency. Although the added fat in the 30% protein chick diet depressed growth of chicks hatched from hens fed the 16 and 32% protein with added fat, it improved growth of those hatched from hens fed the similar diets with no added fat. Added fat in the 30% protein chick diet also improved feed efficiency of all chicks regardless of breeder diet treatments. Chicks hatched with an adequate carry-over of vitamin B12 from hens or chicks fed a diet with 10 micrograms of added vitamin B12/kg of feed did not show the growth depression caused by the high level of fat in the 20 and 30% protein chick diets. Feed efficiency was greatly improved by the addition of vitamin B12 to all chick diets. In a 22% protein vitamin B12 deficient diet, isocaloric substitution of glucose for fat depressed chick growth significantly and this growth depression was counteracted by supplementing the diet with 10 or 100 micrograms of vitamin B12/kg of feed. The vitamin B12 requirement was not increased by such substitution in the 22% protein diet. In contrast, isocaloric substitution of fat for glucose in the 32% protein chick diet increased the vitamin B12 need for optimum growth.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine whether premedication with dextromethorphan, a clinically available N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor antagonist, could reduce postoperative pain after tonsillectomy. Thirty-six patients scheduled for elective bilateral tonsillectomy were investigated in a double-blinded, randomized study. The patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control, dextromethorphan 30 mg (Dex 30), and dextromethorphan 45 mg (Dex 45) groups. In the control group, premedication was with oral placebo and intramuscular (i.m.) midazolam and atropine. In the Dex 30 and Dex 45 groups, patients were premedicated with i.m. midazolam and atropine and oral dextromethorphan 30 mg and 45 mg, respectively. Pain was evaluated repeatedly throughout 7 postoperative days, at rest and on swallowing, using a self-rating visual analog scale (VAS). The total doses of analgesics administered postoperatively were also recorded. The Dex 45 group showed significantly lower VAS scores than the control group both at rest and on swallowing throughout the 7 days. The total doses of postoperative analgesics in the Dex 45 group were significantly less than those in the control group. The Dex 30 group showed significantly lower VAS scores than the control group at rest, but not on swallowing. These results indicate that premedication with Dex 45 reduces postoperative pain after tonsillectomy, not only at rest but on swallowing. IMPLICATIONS: Recently, it has been suggested that central sensitization caused by the activation of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptors may contribute to the postoperative pain. We found that premedication with 45 mg of dextromethorphan, a clinically available N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor antagonist, reduced postoperative pain after tonsillectomy.  相似文献

Twenty-four multiparous Holstein cows were randomly assigned at calving to treatment diets using a modified split-plot design to determine the effects of protein source on milk production and composition. The treatment diets consisted of an 80:20 combination of corn and alfalfa silages and whole cottonseed at 12% of the dietary dry matter (DM). The treatment diets were formulated to contain 17% crude protein (CP) and 20% acid detergent fiber on a DM basis. One of the following sources of supplemental CP was included in each treatment diet: 1) cottonseed meal, 2) cottonseed meal plus a rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) supplement, 3) soybean meal, and 4) soybean meal plus an RUP supplement. Cows were fed the initial treatment diet for 6 wk and then were switched to the other oilseed meal source but continued to receive the same amount of RUP during the second period of the study. Milk production and composition were not affected by treatment diet. Cows fed treatment diets without RUP supplementation consumed more DM and thus more CP. Supplementation with RUP resulted in greater milk production efficiency per unit of DM consumed. Cows fed treatment diets containing cottonseed meal had higher plasma gossypol concentrations than did cows fed treatment diets containing soybean meal. Plasma gossypol concentrations for all cows in each group were below the recommended upper limit that is considered to be safe. Data suggest that cottonseed meal in the diet can be substituted for soybean meal, resulting in similar milk production and composition.  相似文献

The effect of roasted soybeans, blood meal, and tallow as sources of fat and RUP for lactating dairy cows was studied. Forty-five cows, blocked by age, calving date, and milk yield during the previous lactation, were assigned randomly to the following treatments (ingredient in the DM, RUP as a percentage of CP, and fat in the DM, respectively): 1) soybean meal (16, 35, and 3.2%), 2) whole roasted soybeans (18, 40, and 6.2%), 3) ground roasted soybeans (18, 40, and 6.2%), 4) blood meal (2.7, 40, and 3.2%), and 5) blood meal plus tallow (2.7 and 3, 40, and 6.2%). Diets were fed from wk 3 to 18 of lactation and consisted of 20% alfalfa silage, 30% corn silage, and 50% concentrate. The DMI of blood meal and whole roasted soybean diets was about 11% lower than DMI of the soybean meal diet. Milk yield (38.4 kg/d) and milk fat percentage (3.37%) were similar among diets. The roasted soybean diets resulted in the lowest milk protein percentage. Less than 2.7% blood meal might be advisable for diets fed to high yielding dairy cows to avoid reduced DMI.  相似文献

The influence of energy source (silage- or grain-based) on empty body and carcass composition and adipocyte cellularity independent of rate of gain was tested. Sixty-four Angus steers were allotted to either a forage (ad libitum) or grain (limit-fed) diet for a growing phase (145 d) followed by 45, 75, or 105 d of ad libitum access to a grain-based diet. Eight steers were slaughtered initially and eight from each treatment were slaughtered at the end of the growing phase, and at each of the termination dates. The silage growing diet consisted (DM basis) of 55% sorghum silage (approximately 24% dry matter), 22% alfalfa hay, 11% ground shelled corn, and 11% soybean meal. The grain-based growing diet was composed of 77% ground shelled corn, 5% soybean meal, 14% cottonseed hulls, 3% molasses, and 1% salt and mineral; it was limit-fed to produce the same rate of gain as the silage diet. No implants or ionophores were used. At the end of the growing phase, the steers fed grain were heavier and had a higher percentage of fat in the empty body (24 vs 19% fat) and the carcass (26 vs 21% fat) than did steers fed forage. Rate of gain during the growth phase was related positively to percentage of carcass fat; when corrected for fill, data for both diets fit one regression line for fat vs rate of gain. When adjusted for gain during the growing phase, fat content was not different in empty body or carcass, but internal fat was higher (P < .10) for steers fed grain. After 45 d on the finishing diet, carcass fat remained low (23%), but after 75 and 105 d, fat content reached 27%. Source of energy did not detectably affect carcass composition independent of rate of gain. Cell size of adipocytes from four adipose depots increased with time on feed but were not affected by diet during the growing phase. Lean Choice beef can be produced in only 45 d in the feedlot with medium-framed Angus cattle.  相似文献

In Exp. 1, six steers (254 kg) were used in a 6 x 4 incomplete Latin square to determine the effects of solvent-extracted soybean meal alone or in combination with rumen-protected methionine and lysine on N balance in steers limit-fed a high-corn diet to gain 1.1 kg/d. The basal diet contained (DM basis) 80% rolled corn, 15% alfalfa, and .9% urea (13.9% CP), and 2 or 4% soybean meal replaced corn to give CP concentrations of 14.8 and 15.6%, respectively. Each diet was fed with and without 5 g/d of Smartamine-ML (.75 and 2.0 g of rumen-protected methionine and lysine, respectively). Nitrogen retention increased linearly (P = .09) with level of soybean meal. Rumen-protected methionine and lysine had no effect on N balance. In Exp. 2, seven steers (233 kg) were used in a 7 x 4 incomplete Latin square experiment to investigate optimal levels and sources of CP for steers limit-fed to gain 1 kg/d. Treatments included a negative-control diet (urea; 11.7% CP) and six diets containing either 13.5, 15.4, or 17.2% CP with either solvent-extracted or expeller-processed soybean meal. Diets provided 75, 87.5, 100, or 112.5% of estimated CP requirement for a gain of 1 kg/d. The basal diet contained 83% rolled corn, 15% alfalfa, and .2% urea. Nitrogen retention increased linearly (P = .006) with soybean meal addition, and no differences were observed between CP sources. The CP system underpredicted the protein requirements of limit-fed steers under our conditions.  相似文献

A 4 x 5 Youden square design was used to determine the effect of roasting temperature of whole soybeans on escape of CP from the rumen and disappearance of N from the small intestine in steers. Four steers (average BW 373 kg +/- 30.7) cannulated at the rumen, duodenum, and ileum were fed each of five diets (1.8% of BW) over five periods. The basal diet contained corn silage (50% of diet DM), alfalfa hay (24%), corn-urea premix (6%), corn starch grits (16.6%), and soybean oil (3.4%). Soybeans (16% of diet DM), either raw or heated to an exit temperature of 141, 149, or 157 degrees C in a commercial roaster, replaced the soybean oil and most of the corn starch grits in the soybean-containing diets. Ruminal ammonia N was lower (P < .05) for the basal diet than for the soybean-containing diets. Roasting temperature of whole soybeans had no significant impact on ruminal ammonia N. Total N reaching the duodenum was greater (P < .05) for steers fed the soybean diets than for steers fed the basal diet. Non-bacterial N (dietary N) at the duodenum was increased (P < .05) by feeding soybeans. Soybean N reaching the duodenum decreased with increased roasting temperature. Increased roasting temperature of whole soybeans seemed to make the soybeans more brittle, subsequently increasing degradation of CP in the rumen. However, disappearance of soybean N in the small intestine, as a proportion of the soybean N entering the small intestine, increased with increased roasting temperature. Apparent total tract N digestibility was increased (P < .05) by feeding soybeans. Flow to the duodenum and small intestinal digestibility of total, essential, and nonessential amino acids increased (P < .05) when soybeans were fed and when roasted vs raw soybeans were fed. Under normal roasting conditions, it seemed that little potential for heat damage to the soybean protein existed. Instead, undesirable effects of heating on handling characteristics of the soybeans were reached before the point at which loss of nutritive value occurred. Feeding steers diets containing roasted whole soybeans increased the N and amino acids available to steers over steers fed diets containing raw soybeans due to increased ruminal soybean nitrogen escape and increased small intestinal digestibility.  相似文献

The effect of the type of dietary starch (gelatinized vs native) on the biological value of fish meal (FP) and fish soluble protein concentrate (CPSP) was studied through the nitrogen balance in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reared for 3 weeks at 2 water temperatures: 8 or 18 degrees C. The protein sources were included in diets at a level of 60% and gelatinized or raw starch at a level of 30%. Gelatinized starch improved the biological value of FP and CPSP by reducing the metabolic nitrogen losses. Trout fed the diet with CPSP had a higher nitrogen excretion than those fed the diet with FP. The biological value of both protein sources was unaffected by water temperature.  相似文献

An increasing number of clinical trials have demonstrated that obese patients are more likely than lean individuals to be hypertensive. Moreover, both obesity and arterial hypertension have been identified as independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Pathophysiologically, obesity appears to have a major influence on the hemodynamic changes associated with hypertension. The available evidence suggests that at any given level of arterial pressure, obese hypertensive patients have a higher cardiac output and lower total peripheral resistance than do lean patients. Recent reports have indicated that obesity exerts a disparate effect on target organs in hypertension. Whereas at rest obesity seems to mitigate cardiovascular changes in the systemic vascular bed caused by hypertension, no such mitigation was observed in the renovasculature; left ventricular hypertrophy as a major cardiovascular risk factor was even exacerbated by the presence of obesity. The different hemodynamic patterns in obese hypertensive patients have recently been shown clinically relevant for treating hypertensive patients.  相似文献
