Linguistic Isolation of American Psychology.

Comments on the original article "Linguistic isolation of American social psychology: A comparative study of journal citations," by L. J. Finison and C. L. Whittemore (see record 1990-57169-001). In this comment, the author makes two remarks relevant to the linguistic isolation of American psychology in general. First, the low citation rate to foreign language publications in American psychology journals, such as that found by Finison and Whittemore for social psychology journals, does not necessarily mean that almost every piece of research published in psychology is contributed by an American psychologist, or that American psychologists ignore the work of foreign researchers. Second, another factor that may explain partially, and at least in some areas of psychology, the high English-language citation rate in psychology journals is the translation of the work by foreign psychologists into the English language. Linguistic isolation of American social psychology: A comparative study of journal citations.

Examined articles in 9 social psychology (SP) journals from 5-yr intervals between 1945 and 1970 to determine the extent of linguistic isolation in SP, the historical development of isolation, and the extent of isolation relative to other scientific disciplines. Results indicate that 98.2% of citations were to English language sources and that US social sciences tend to be linguistically isolated in comparison to US physical sciences. International Humanitarian Award: Karen L. Hanscom.

Karen L. Hanscom received the 2001 International Humanitarian Award. She was given this award for her commitment to human rights, to the healing of torture victims, and to educating the world community about torture. She has touched the lives of hundreds of women who survived the civil war in Guatemala through her work with the Puentes de Paz health project. Her training programs have contributed to increased understanding of the needs of torture victims by a wide variety of professionals and community groups. Linguistic constraints on participation in psychology.

Suggests that R. W. Russell (see record 1985-21215-001) provides examples of how linguistic and semantic factors (particularly the dominance of English as a universal language in psychology) limits psychology's potential development as an international discipline. Data that describe the linguistic characteristics of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, International Journal of Psychology, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and the Interamerican Journal of Psychology indicate that articles written in languages other than English (and their authors) are virtually excluded from the international communication process. How American surgeons introduced radiology into U.S. medicine

In 1985, Wilhelm Roentgen of Germany discovered "x-rays." His findings were so startling and the expectations for x-rays were of such inestimable value that, within just a few weeks, an English language translation of his paper was published verbatim in the United States. It was immediately apparent that the usefulness of x-rays for clinical diagnosis was implicit in their ability to demonstrate pathologic problems of the skeleton and to visualize foreign objects in the body. Not unexpectedly, it was surgeons who were the first group of clinicians to put the new discovery to immediate use. Consequently, during 1896, American surgeons were at the forefront of understanding and utilizing this new modality. By reviewing the work of William Keen, James White, De Forest Willard, and Carl Beck, it becomes apparent that U.S. surgeons acted as dutiful midwives during the birth of modern radiology.     

Adequacy of a translation of the MMPI into American Sign Language for use with deaf individuals: Linguistic equivalency issues.

Translated the MMPI into American Sign Language (ASL) via the back-translation procedure and recorded it on videotape to determine the linguistic equivalency of a sign language translation of a psychological test for use with deaf individuals. The bilingual retest technique was conducted whereby both forms of the instrument were administered to 28 ASL-English bilingual deaf Ss. Due to the advent of the MMPI-2 during the conduct of this study, a new set of T scores was calculated from the present MMPI data to compare the effect of shifting to the MMPI-2 norms. The results demonstrate adequate linguistic equivalencies of the ASL MMPI items and underscore the potential utility and practicality of future ASL translations of psychological tests for use with deaf individuals. Recognizes Karen Wynn for her receipt of the 2000 Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions to Psychology. The award was given for her outstanding research program on the ontogenetic foundations of mathematical knowledge.
