The sensitivity to surrounding refractive index (SRI) of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) can be effectively improved by decreasing the cladding radius. When the cladding is reduced, a three-layer model is necessary to evaluate the effective refractive index (ERI) of the core mode. A variation of SRI can induce a greater resonant wavelength shift when the core mode is coupled to a higher-order cladding mode. However, as the cladding is reduced further, the highest-order cladding mode would be cut off, i.e. the number of cladding modes that a given fiber structure can support would be less; thus, the higher-order cladding modes that can be used for higher sensitivity are limited. Hence, the implementation of high sensitivity for SRI sensing with cladding-reduced LPFGs is dependent on the proper combination of cladding radius and cladding mode order. Based on the vector coupled-mode theory, the transmission spectrum and sensitivity are numerically analyzed with respect to the cladding radius, which shows that the SRI sensitivity of the HE12 mode with cladding radius a 2?=?20?µm is 32 times as high as that with a 2?=?62.5?µm and the SRI resolution is available to the order of 10?7.  相似文献

We present a refractive index (RI) sensor based on a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) formed by two cascaded special long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with rotary refractive index modulation (RLPFGs), in which the coupling occurred between the guided mode and the high-order asymmetric cladding mode. The experimental results show that the RI sensitivity of a refractometer with an interaction length of 40?mm is up to 58.8?nm/RI in the range of 1.3344 to 1.3637, which is 3.5 times higher than that of an MZI formed by two normal LPFGs. The temperature sensitivity for the same parameters of an RLPFG-MZI is about 0.03?nm/°C. Such a kind of high-sensitivity, easy-to-fabricate and simple-structure interferometer may find applications in the chemical or biochemical sensing fields.  相似文献

We demonstrate the use of tilted fiber gratings to assist the generation of localized infrared surface plasmons with short propagation lengths and a sensitivity of dlambda/dn = 3,365 nm in the aqueous index regime. It was also found that the resonances could be spectrally tuned over 1,000 nm at the same spatial region with high coupling efficiency (in excess of 25 dB) by altering the polarization of the light illuminating the device.  相似文献

We fabricate a miniature tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) interferometer with enhanced sensitivity by acid microdroplets etching. This method is very simple and cost effective, avoiding elongating the PCF, moving and refixing the device during etching, and measuring. The refractive index sensing properties with different PCF diameters are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The tapering velocity can be controlled by the microdroplet size and position. The sensitivity greatly increases (five times, 750?nm/RIU) and the size decreases after slightly tapering the PCF. The device keeps low temperature dependence before and after tapering. More uniformly and thinly tapered PCFs can be realized with higher sensitivity (~100 times) by optimizing the etching process.  相似文献

Bending effects of a long period grating inscribed into the core of a single-mode fibre with the cladding having a parabolic-index profile are theoretically investigated. Fully vectorial bend mode solver is used to calculate field distributions of both core and cladding modes. A simplified mode expansion and propagation theory is used to calculate the spectrally dependent transmission in bent fibres. Theoretical results show that the parabolic-index profile of the cladding should help dramatically reduce the sensitivity of the grating to fibre bending.  相似文献

We present an analysis on the saturation of refractive index modulation of fiber Bragg gratings written in nonhydrogenated Ge-B co-doped single-mode photosensitive optical fiber by partially coherent pulsed UV beams. The UV beams of different spatial coherence properties were generated by second harmonic conversion of high repetition rate, high average power copper vapor laser (CVL) oscillators with different optical resonators. It is observed that for UV beams of higher spatial coherence, the fiber Bragg grating reflectivity growth was faster and saturation of refractive index modulation was higher. The experimental results are explained with the help of a physical model based on exponential decay of defect centers per unit volume on UV absorption in the fiber core. The subsequent increase in the refractive index was attributed to the structural modification and densification of the fiber core.  相似文献

A prism-pair interferometer comprising two homodyne interferometers with a common light source was developed for high-precision measurements of the refractive index of optical glasses with an uncertainty of the order of 10(-6). The two interferometers measure changes in the optical path length in the glass sample and in air, respectively. Uncertainties in the absolute wavelength of the common light source are cancelled out by calculating a ratio between the results from the interferometers. Uncertainties in phase measurement are suppressed by a quadrature detection system. The combined standard uncertainty of the developed system is evaluated as 1.1×10(-6).  相似文献
