Five experiments investigated the role of attention in identifying global and local targets in hierarchically structured patterns. Hierarchical patterns were presented at a variable stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) either after a cue (4 arrows or shaded boxes) or after no cue. Targets occurred at the cued level 80% of the time and at the uncued level 20%. On uncued trials, target level probability was .5. Global cues produced benefits for both global and local targets over SOA on cued trials. Local cues produced benefits only for local targets. For uncued trials, responses favored local targets overall when interspersed with locally cued trials but favored global targets when interspersed with globally cued trials. The role of an attentional window and discrete distribution of attention over global and local levels of hierarchical patterns are discussed. The cost of incongruent stimuli is reduced when conflict is expected. This series of experiments tested whether this improved performance is due to repetition priming or to enhanced cognitive control. Using a paradigm in which Word and Number Stroop alternated every trial, Experiment 1 assessed dynamic trial-to-trial changes. Incongruent trials led to task-specific reduction of conflict (trial n + 2) without cross-task modulation (trial n + 1), but this was fully explained by repetition priming. In contrast, an increased ratio of incongruent words did lead to sustained task-specific enhancement, above and beyond repetition priming (Experiment 2). Experiments 3 and 4 assessed the voluntary modulation of cognitive control: A cue predicted the congruency of the incoming trial, allowing participants to establish the correct mindset (Word Stroop in Experiment 3, Flanker task in Experiment 4). Preparing oneself to process an incongruent word (or flanker) enhanced conflict resolution in the subsequent Number Stroop, an example of cross-task modulation. Taken together, these experiments reveal the multifaceted aspects of conflict resolution: Trial-to-trial changes are often due to repetition priming; sustained modulations brought about by task demands are task specific; and voluntary modulations are task general. Target identification is faster when the target level (global or local) is the same as that on the previous trial, presumably because attention is directed to the appropriate level. L. C. Robertson (see record 1996-05632-001) found that eliminating low spatial frequencies by contrast balancing eliminated this level repetition effect and concluded that attentional selection between different levels of structure is based on spatial frequency. In contrast, M. R. Lamb and E. W. Yund (1996a) found no effect of contrast balancing on the level repetition effect and thus concluded that attentional selection is not based on spatial frequency. In this study, the authors identified the procedural difference between the 2 studies responsible for this difference in results and replicated both findings. The data show that spatial frequency is not a necessary basis for attentional selection between global and local forms. Although it remains possible that spatial frequency is the basis of attentional selection under some circumstances, the data supporting this proposition are not yet compelling. The authors propose that there are 2 different mechanisms whereby spatial cues capture attention. The voluntary mechanism is the strategic allocation of perceptual resources to the location most likely to contain the target. The involuntary mechanism is a reflexive orienting response that occurs even when the spatial cue does not indicate the probable target location. Voluntary attention enhances the perceptual representation of the stimulus in the cued location relative to other locations. Hence, voluntary attention affects performance in experiments designed around both accuracy and reaction time. Involuntary attention affects a decision as to which location should be responded to. Because involuntary attention does not change the perceptual representation, it affects performance in reaction time experiments but not accuracy experiments. L. Paquet and P. M. Merikle (1988) found that Ss can ignore the category of unattended local forms but not that of global forms. Does this finding reflect a priority for global information during perception? In 5 studies, 2 compound stimuli, each surrounded by a frame, were presented side by side, and attention was directed to 1 of the stimuli. The 1st 2 studies examined whether local dominance would emerge if a small gap (Exp 1) or the presence of small white lines (Exp 2) on the surrounding frame specified the target object. No evidence for local dominance was found. Three additional studies examined whether local dominance would be obtained if Ss had extensive practice identifying the local aspect of stimulus displays. Although local practice led to automatic detection of unattended local targets, it did not affect the processing of the global aspect. Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and normal controls (NCs) performed a negative priming task. NCs displayed the normal pattern of negative priming in that relative to a control condition they were slower to identify a target within a stimulus array when it had been a distractor in the previous array. PD patients did not display any evidence of negative priming. In contrast, both PD patients and NCs displayed statistically the same level of spatial priming and response repetition cost. Regression analyses indicated that although symptom severity, symptom characteristics, and global cognitive functioning were not reliable predictors of negative priming or spatial priming in PD patients, greater symptom severity and poorer global cognitive functioning were associated with less response repetition cost. Three experiments examined adult age differences in the efficiency of endogenous (voluntary) and exogenous (involuntary) attention shifts. Younger and older Ss performed a spatial cuing task in which abruptly onset peripheral cues (Exp 1) or central, symbolic cues (Exps 2 and 3) were presented before a target stimulus at intervals ranging from 50 to 250 msec. With peripheral cues, the magnitude of cuing effects was at least as great for older as for younger adults and followed a similar time course. Similar results were obtained with symbolic cues, although cuing effects for older adults varied with cue difficulty. Responding to a CS is impaired if the CS is trained in the presence of excitatory local context cues. Four lick suppression experiments with rats explored whether this local context effect arises from the influence of excitatory cues that precede or that follow a reinforced target CS. Pretrained nontarget stimuli served as local context cues that occurred (1) immediately before and after the target CS trial, (2) immediately before or after the target CS trial, or (3) only before or after the target CS trial with varying intervals between the nontarget stimulus and target CS. Results indicated similar control over responding to the target CS by the preceding and following nontarget cues. This outcome implies a symmetrical window of memory integration (local time horizon) for a Pavlovian CS. Recent experimental results suggest that human and nonhuman primates differ in how they process visual information to assemble component parts into global shapes. To assess whether some of the observed differences in perceptual grouping could be accounted for by the prevalence of different grouping factors in different species, we carried out 2 experiments designed to evaluate the relative use of proximity, similarity of shape, and orientation as grouping cues in humans (Homo sapiens) and capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Both species showed similarly high levels of accuracy using proximity as a cue. Moreover, for both species, grouping by orientation similarity produced a lower level of performance than grouping by proximity. Differences emerged with respect to the use of shape similarity as a cue. In humans, grouping by shape similarity also proved less effective than grouping by proximity but the same was not observed in capuchins. These results suggest that there may be subtle differences between humans and capuchin monkeys in the weighting assigned to different grouping cues that may affect the way in which they combine local features into global shapes. Visuospatial attention can be directed by voluntary or involuntary control independent of eye movement. The involvement of cortical and subcortical neural structures in this covert orienting mechanism has been studied using neuroimaging and electrophysiological techniques. This study was designed to investigate the role of the dopaminergic system in both voluntary and automatic orienting mechanisms of visuospatial attention. We recorded event-related evoked potentials (ERPs) and reaction time (RT) during a cued priming task in both patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and control subjects. Voluntary and automatic shifts in attention were studied by using central and peripheral cues, respectively. In the experiment using a central cue, the RT data showed that when the cue-target interval was long, PD patients' responses were delayed, and cue validity effects were reduced, whereas in the peripheral cue experiment the validity effects persisted across all trials. The ERPs demonstrated reduced sustained negativities preceding the imperative targets in both the central and peripheral cue experiments in PD patients. Furthermore, during the long cue-target interval in the central cue experiment, PD patients showed reduced attention shift-related negativities (ARNs) at the anterior scalp sites, whereas ARNs were generated widely in the peripheral cue experiment. The ERP findings were consistent with the RT data. These findings suggest that the dopaminergic system may contribute to voluntary and sustained control of visuospatial attention as well as to the neural system for response preparation, whereas automatic control of visuospatial attention is relatively independent of the dopamine system.  相似文献

In sequential retrieval, 2 repetition effects are observed: repetition facilitation and perseveration errors (incorrect repetition). The characteristics of these effects were examined in 2 mental arithmetic experiments. Addition problems were sequenced with frequent repetition, and trials were precued to indicate the probability of repetition or nonrepetition on the next trial. Both stimulus and response repetition trials were facilitated, especially after repetition cues. Perseveration errors were most frequent for consecutive trials similar to repetition pairs, supporting the hypothesis that repetition trials are identified by a familiarity assessment process. Although perseveration errors are typically less frequent than chance in arithmetic, this effect was not sensitive to nonrepetition cues, suggesting that perseveration errors are not controlled strategically. The implications of these results are discussed with reference to repetition effects and inhibitory processes in sequential retrieval. Predictive visual context facilitates visual search, a benefit termed contextual cuing (M. M. Chun & Y. Jiang, 1998). In the original task, search arrays were repeated across blocks such that the spatial configuration (context) of all of the distractors in a display predicted an embedded target location. The authors modeled existing results using a connectionist architecture and then designed new behavioral experiments to test the model's assumptions. The modeling and behavioral results indicate that learning may be restricted to the local context even when the entire configuration is predictive of target location. Local learning constrains how much guidance is produced by contextual cuing. The modeling and new data also demonstrate that local learning requires that the local context maintain its location in the overall global context. Emotion is conveyed in speech by semantic content (what is said) and by prosody (how it is said). Prior research suggests that older adults benefit from linguistic prosody when comprehending language but that they have difficulty understanding affective prosody. In a series of 3 experiments, young and older adults listened to sentences in which the emotional cues conveyed by semantic content and affective prosody were either congruent or incongruent and then indicated whether the talker sounded happy or sad. When judging the emotion of the talker, young adults were more attentive to the affective prosodic cues than to the semantic cues, whereas older adults performed less consistently when these cues conflicted. Participants’ reading and repetition of the sentences were recorded so that age- and emotion-related changes in the production of emotional speech cues could be examined. Both young and older adults were able to produce affective prosody. The age-related difference in perceiving emotion was eliminated when listeners repeated the sentences before responding, consistent with previous findings regarding the beneficial role of repetition in conversation. The results of these experiments suggest that there are age-related differences in interpreting affective prosody but that repeating may be a compensatory strategy that could minimize the everyday consequences of these differences. The cerebellum has been implicated in higher cognitive functions including learning, memory, and attention as well as its well-known role in motor programming. Recent studies have suggested that the cerebellum plays a role in shifts of attention. We investigated the contribution of the cerebellum to visuospatial attentional ability in a trial-by-trial cueing task involving the covert orienting of spatial attention. We recorded event-related evoked potentials (ERPs) and reaction times (RTs) in patients with cerebellar degenerative disorders affecting mainly the lateral cerebellum and compared them to age-matched controls. The RT data demonstrated that both the cerebellar patients and control subjects responded to the valid cues faster than to the invalid cues for both the central and the peripheral cues. Consistent with the RT data, the ERP data showed a comparable generation of attention shift-related negativities during the cue-target interval for both the central and the peripheral cue experiments. The early negative component of the ERP to the target was also comparably modulated in both groups as a function of cue validity, suggesting efficient facilitation of sensory pathways by prior allocation of spatial attention to the cued place. Conversely, the late negative deflection preceding the imperative target stimulus and the late sustained positivity following target presentation, which reflect neural activities for response preparation and selection, were reduced in the cerebellar group. These findings suggest that the lateral cerebellum makes little contribution to visuospatial attention shift in either the voluntary or automatic modes and support a role of the lateral cerebellum in the neural system required for response preparation and selection.  相似文献

Five experiments examined repetition effects on tachistoscopic word identification with masked and unmasked primes varying in lag (to the targets) and word frequency. Qualitative differences in lag effects were found between masked and unmasked primes, with only unmasked primes producing long-lasting repetition effects. Masked primes facilitated performance under conditions in which subjects did not discriminate the presence of prime letter strings; unmasked primes only facilitated target identification when there were visual cues segmenting primes from targets. These qualitative differences between masked and unmasked primes were attributed to effects occurring within a perceptual event (with masked primes) relative to those occurring across events (with unmasked primes). Increasing cue duration impairs performance in bar-probe partial report when cues are presented peripherally, but not centrally (P. Dixon, R. Gordon, A. Leung, & V. Di Lollo, 1997). Three experiments examined whether this cue-duration effect reflects processes of exogenous attention. The effect of cue duration on partial report performance with peripheral, but not central, cues was replicated (Experiment 1). Further experiments manipulated the degree that exogenous versus endogenous modes of selection were favored and found that the cue-duration effect for peripheral cues was reduced (1) when blocks contained a high proportion of central cues (Experiment 2) and (2) when the color of the cue indicated the location of the target (Experiment 3). These findings challenge the view that the cue-duration effect is restricted to exogenous attention and are discussed in terms of the process of disengaging attention from the cue to reallocate attention to the target representation. In 6 experiments, the performance of male rats in a 12-arm radial maze was examined. The focus of study was the extent to which the spatial location of individual baited maze arms was determined before the rat was exposed to the extramaze visual cues corresponding to the arm, and thereby guided the rat toward the location of baited arms. Such spatial guidance of choice behavior implies a spatially organized cognitive representation of maze arms (i.e., a cognitive map). A higher level of spatial guidance was found when visual access to extramaze cues was restricted than when it was unrestricted. There was no evidence of a difference between the level of spatial guidance in the context of working memory performance and reference memory performance. Some evidence that intramaze cues contributed to microchoice guidance was found. However, spatial guidance, under at least some conditions, is best explained in terms of cognitive mapping. On the basis of a review of neuropsychological evidence for several component processes of responding to global and local levels of hierarchically structured patterns, L. C. Robertson and M. R. Lamb (see record 1991-24938-001) hypothesized that interhemispheric communication between posterior cortexes would disrupt the typically interfering effects of global patterns on local response. These studies confirmed this hypothesis in 3 commissurotomized Ss. The normal interaction between visual field presentation and global or local level was present in normal Ss and all 3 patients, but global interference was absent or even reversed in patients. In Experiment 1, control rats and rats treated with atropine sulfate or atropine methyl nitrate (50 mg/kg) were trained to escape to a visible platform from different starting points in a swimming pool. All groups learned the task by concomitantly developing position responses, by orienting according to room cues, and by orienting to the platform, but probe trials showed that the atropine-sulfate group made more use of the platform as a local cue and made less use of distal cues than did the other groups. The atropine-sulfate group also made fewer searches during acquisition, made fewer searches when the platform was removed on probe trials, and were less responsive to novel cues placed above and around the pool. Swim speed, as estimated by the distance swum on probe trials, was also greater in atropine-sulfate-treated rats. The postulate that rats treated with atropine sulfate preferentially guide swimming by using position responses and local cues was tested in Experiment 2 by comparing their performance with that of control rats in a place task in which the target platform was hidden (no local cues present) and in a similar place task in which the target platform was visible, as was a second incorrect platform that sank when climbed upon (two competing local cues present). Although both tasks were acquired by the control and drugged rats, the two-platform task, as predicted, was comparatively more difficult for the atropine-treated rats. Effects of a spatial cue on representational momentum were examined. If a cue was present during or after target motion and indicated the location at which the target would vanish or had vanished, forward displacement of that target decreased. The decrease in forward displacement was larger when cues were present after target motion than when cues were present during target motion. If a cue was present during target motion, high-relevant cues (that indicated the final location of the target) led to larger decreases in forward displacement than did low-relevant cues (that indicated only the horizontal coordinate of the final location of the target). If a cue was present after target motion, there was a trend for low-relevant cues to lead to larger decreases in forward displacement than did high-relevant cues. Possible explanations involving displacement of the cue or landmark attraction are considered. Implications for the relationship of attention and representational momentum, and for whether representational momentum reflects an automatic process, are discussed.
