Cows were fed diets either supplemented with .2 ppm Se and 70 IU vitamin E/kg diet DM (21 cows) or unsupplemented (40 cows) during the dry period (approximately 60 d). From parturition to 21 d of lactation, cows were fed diets that were either supplemented with .3 ppm Se and 40 IU/kg vitamin E or unsupplemented. At d 21 following parturition, 18 cows fed the unsupplemented diet were switched to diets containing 0 or .3 ppm supplemental Se and 0 or 40 IU/kg supplemental vitamin E arranged factorially. These diets were fed for the next 32 d. The remaining cows continued their respective diets for 32 d. Plasma Se concentrations averaged .1 microgram/ml for supplemented cows but were .05 micrograms/ml for unsupplemented cows. Plasma Se concentration from cows fed supplemental Se from 21 to 53 d postpartum increased rapidly and were not different from long-term supplemented cows. Whole blood glutathione peroxidase activity was lower in unsupplemented than in supplemented cows. Short-term Se supplementation increased glutathione peroxidase activity above that for unsupplemented animals, but activity was still less than that in long-term supplemented animals. Plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations at parturition and d 21 postpartum were lower in unsupplemented than in supplemented animals. On d 53 postpartum, no differences in plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations were found between long-term supplemented and unsupplemented cows. Supplementing vitamin E during the dry period increased alpha-tocopherol content of colostrum.  相似文献

Selenium concentrations in blood serum of heifer calves from dams fed 0, 1, or 5 mg supplemental selenium daily during the dry period were compared. Dry cows were fed corn silage top dressed with a soybean meal mineral mix containing the desired amount of selenium. At birth, calves were assigned to one of six treatments in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement. Calf treatments were 0, 1 (at birth), or 2 (at birth and 14 days of age) injections of selenium/vitamin E with feeding of starter commencing at 14 or 28 days of age. Dosage per injection was .078 mg selenium and 5.4 IU vitamin E per kilogram body weight. Selenium concentrations of blood serum of cows at parturition were 14, 32, and 58 ppb for cows fed 0, 1, and 5 mg selenium per day. Amount of selenium fed to cows affected selenium concentrations in blood serum of their calves with those from cows fed 5 mg selenium having the greatest concentrations. Calves from cows fed no supplemental selenium showed increased selenium in serum at day 28 and 42 when given one or two injections of selenium. Two injections, however, were necessary to elicit a response in calves from cows fed 1 mg per day. Selenium in blood serum of calves from cows fed 5 mg per day was not elevated when calves were given one or two injections of selenium. Prepartum selenium supplementation of the dam elevated selenium of blood serum in the calf at birth.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The effects of dietary hay or silage on plasma α-tocopherol and Se concentrations during late gestation and early lactation were studied using 40 crossbred pregnant cows and their calves. Cows received solely either timothy hay or grass silage forage from midgestation to early lactation and 21 d prior to estimated calving were or were not injected with Se (30 mg) and α-tocopherol (3000 IU). Five blood samples were collected for determination of concentrations of α-tocopherol and Se twice during late gestation and three times after calving. Blood samples from calves were collected at birth and at 10 and 30 d of age. Serum concentrations of α-tocopherol were low at birth for both groups of calves and ranged from .83 to 1.08 μg/ml of plasma. Hay had less α-tocopherol than silage (15 vs. 35 ppm in the DM). Cows fed silage had significantly higher plasma α-tocopherol concentrations (3.41 μg/ml) than cows fed hay (2.25 μg/ml). Cows given one subcutaneous injection of Se plus α-tocopherol preparation had significantly higher Se concentration in plasma (30 ng/ml) than did cows in the control group (17 ng/ml). The Se concentration in the placenta of cows that were injected with the Se preparation was significantly higher (64 ppm) than that in the control (47 ppm). Plasma Se concentration of calves at birth was correlated significantly with that of dams soon after parturition.  相似文献

The effects of feeding dry and early lactation dairy cows diets with selenate or selenized yeast (Se-yeast) on concentrations of Se in serum, milk, and newborn calves, neutrophil function, and inflammatory response were determined. At 60 d before anticipated calving until approximately 30 d in milk (DIM), cows were fed diets that contained 0.3 mg of supplemental Se/kg of DM from sodium selenate or Se-yeast. Diets also contained 0.2% supplemental S (as sulfate) because it has been shown to reduce absorption of Se by dairy cows. The concentration of Se in serum at calving and 28 DIM was about 1.4 times greater for cows fed Se-yeast than for those fed selenate. Serum concentrations decreased 45 and 23% from dry-off to calving for cows fed selenate or Se-yeast, respectively. Selenium concentrations in serum from newborn calves were also about 1.4 times greater when the dams were fed Se-yeast. Concentrations of Se in colostrum and milk were about 1.8 times greater when cows were fed Se-yeast. Blood neutrophils were isolated from cows at 28 DIM and were used in an in vitro kill assay. Selenium treatment did not affect bacterial kill or the percentage of neutrophils that phagocytized bacteria. At approximately 28 DIM, one quarter from each cow was infused with a solution containing endotoxin. Peak body temperature (40.7°C) occurred 6 h postinfusion, and peak somatic cell count (6.5 log10/mL) occurred at 12 h postinfusion. Neither measure was influenced by Se treatment.  相似文献

Incidence of retained placenta in dairy cows was evaluated in 627 parturitions. The herd was divided prepartum into three groups: 1) control, no treatment (n = 217 cows); 2) cows injected intramuscularly (n = 190) 21 to 10 d prior parturition with 45 mg Se and 2040 IU of vitamin E; and 3) cows intraruminally administered (n = 220) with two 30-g pellets containing 10% elemental selenium 2 mo prior to expected calving. Incidence of retained placenta (22.1%) was not reduced by Se in combination with vitamin E injection or intraruminal Se pellet nor were other measures of reproduction improved for cows fed a prepartum diet adequate in Se. At parturition the blood plasma Se concentrations were higher in treated postpartum with Se than in untreated cows. No difference in blood plasma Se was observed at parturition between cows with or without placenta retention. Cows dosed intraruminally with Se had a significant increase in milk Se, but this was too small to be a danger to human health. The present results on placenta retention suggest that this disorder is not a Se responsive disease in the dairy cow.  相似文献

Vitamin E is immunostimulatory in calves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Thirty-two Holstein heifer calves, eight per group, were fed 0, 125, 250 or 500 IU/d of supplemental vitamin E/calf, from birth to 24 wk of age, in order to determine the effect on their immune responses. Overall mean lymphocyte blastogenic responses to various T-cell and B-cell mitogens were higher in supplemented calves than in control calves. Mean concentrations of cortisol in serum were lower in all supplemented calves than in control calves. Antibovine herpes-virus type 1 antibody titer (IgG) at 8 and 9 wk, in response to a commercial modified-live intranasal vaccine at 7 wk, was similar in all treatment groups. At 24 wk, in response to a booster at 21 wk, titer was higher in calves given 125 IU of vitamin E/d than in control calves. Based on the concentrations used, it is concluded that supplementation of conventional rations with 125 IU of vitamin E/d may maximize immune responses in calves and may be cost effective.  相似文献

Bovine neutrophil responses to parenteral vitamin E.   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Twenty-eight Holsteins were tested to determine effects of dietary and parenteral vitamin E supplementation during the dry period on plasma alpha-tocopherol and in vitro neutrophil functions at calving. Cows were assigned to one of four experimental groups receiving either supplemental dietary vitamin E, injections of vitamin E, both dietary and injections of vitamin E, or neither source of supplemental vitamin E during the dry period in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Cows receiving parenteral vitamin E were injected subcutaneously with 3000 IU of vitamin E (dl-alpha-tocopherol) at 10 and 5 d prior to anticipated calving. Cows not receiving parenteral vitamin E were injected with a placebo. Experimental groups receiving dietary vitamin E during the dry period were supplemented with 1040 IU/d compared with none for controls. Cows injected with vitamin E had greater plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration 5 d after the first injection, at calving, and 1 wk after calving than did cows injected with placebo. Plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations did not differ between dietary vitamin E treatment groups from calving through 4 wk postpartum. No interaction was found between dietary and parenteral supplementation of vitamin E on plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration. Neutrophils from cows injected with vitamin E had greater intracellular kill of bacteria at calving than did neutrophils from placebo-injected cows. Neither phagocytic index nor percentage of neutrophils phagocytizing differed between vitamin E-injected and placebo-injected cows. Dietary vitamin E during the dry period had no effect on neutrophil function at calving. Intracellular kill and plasma alpha-tocopherol were correlated at calving.  相似文献

To determine the effect of supplemental dietary vitamin D3 on concentration of vitamin D and its metabolites in milk, 20 Holstein cows were assigned to four groups and fed either 0, 10,000, 50,000, or 250,000 IU of vitamin D3/d beginning approximately 2 wk prepartum and continuing through wk 12 of lactation. Samples of blood plasma and milk were assayed for concentrations of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Only the daily dosage of 250,000 IU caused significant increases of concentrations of vitamin D or 25-hydroxyvitamin D in plasma. Concentrations of vitamin D and 25-hydroxyvitamin D in milk were approximately equal and averaged .2 ng/ml. Little 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and no 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D could be detected in milk from any of the four treatment groups. Cows fed 250,000 IU of vitamin D3/d produced milk containing 54 IU of vitamin D activity per liter, whereas unsupplemented cows produced milk containing 17 IU/L. Oral supplementation with up to 250,000 IU of vitamin D3/d does not increase effectively vitamin D activity of milk.  相似文献

Dairy calves (n = 18), separated from dams at birth, were fed 1 L of pooled-colostrum. For the remaining 7 wk of the study, they were fed one of three diets consisting of either a custom-formulated milk replacer without vitamin A (controls), or supplemented with retinyl palmitate (equivalent to 32,000 IU of vitamin A/d) or with beta-carotene (equivalent to 20,000 IU of vitamin A/d). Plasma retinol, beta-carotene, and RRR-alpha-tocopherol concentrations were lowest at birth, and increased substantially from birth to 1 wk postpartum in all groups, a probable consequence of ingestion of colostrum. From 1 to 7 wk of age, retinol concentrations were greatest in retinyl palmitate-supplemented calves, intermediate in beta-carotene-supplemented calves and lowest in control calves. At 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 wk, RRR-alpha-tocopherol concentrations were lower in retinyl palmitate-supplemented calves than in control calves. A negative correlation between plasma retinol and vitamin E concentrations existed from wk 2 to 7, suggesting vitamin A influences the absorption and distribution of RRR-alpha-tocopherol. Supplemental retinyl palmitate, but not beta-carotene, was associated with a reduction in the percentage of blood mononuclear leukocytes expressing CD2, CD4, and CD8-T cell antigens and interleukin-2 receptors. By wk 7, leukocyte populations from retinyl palmitate-supplemented calves were more similar to those from adult cattle than those from control calves, suggesting that supplemental vitamin A, as retinyl palmitate, affects the maturation of the neonatal immune system. Differences in the composition of blood mononuclear leukocyte populations may represent changes in immune competency.  相似文献

A 22-mo experiment was conducted to determine effects of mineral supplementation of cows on mineral elements in milk, colostrum, and blood serum. Purebred Brahman beef cows grazing pastures grown on sandy and well-drained soils were allotted to three treatments of 12 cows each as follows: control, a complete commercial mineral mixture, control plus dietary and injected Se, and control plus fortified mineral mixture. Milk and serum were analyzed for minerals 2 consecutive yr at parturition and 3 mo postpartum. Mean cow serum, Ca, Mg, P, and packed cell volume values were higher at parturition than 3 mo later, whereas serum Cu was highest at 3 mo. Mean serum concentrations were affected by year with higher Ca and hemoglobin and lower Cu concentrations in 1982 than in 1981. Increasing dietary Se resulted in higher serum Se. Colostrum was higher in Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Se, and Zn than milk, whereas milk was higher than colostrum in Mn. Means for treatment X time showed cows fed dietary and dietary plus injected Se and vitamin E had more Se in milk than milk from cows fed no supplemental Se.  相似文献

Evidence has suggested that the current requirement for vitamin A tabulated by the NRC [(approximately 3800 IU of vitamin A/kg of dry matter (DM)] for dairy calves fed liquid diets is too low. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of vitamin A content in milk replacers on serum and liver vitamin A concentrations, growth, and development of clinical signs of vitamin A deficiency in calves. Male Holstein calves were separated from their dams at birth and given standardized feedings of colostrum and milk replacer for 3 d. On d 4, calves were assigned to five groups and fed milk replacer containing 2300, 6200, 9000, 18,300, or 44,000 IU of vitamin A/kg of DM. Liver biopsies and serum samples were taken on d 4, 9, 15, 21, and 28 to monitor vitamin A concentrations. Weekly physical and neurological examinations were performed to monitor the development of deficiency signs. Fecal scores, body temperature, and the presence of nasal and ocular discharge were recorded daily. Liver vitamin A concentrations in calves allotted to diets with 2300 and 6200 IU of vitamin A/kg decreased from d 4 to 28. Calves fed 9000 IU of vitamin A/kg maintained liver stores, while those fed 18,300 and 44,000 IU of vitamin A/kg had significant increases in hepatic vitamin A. A strong negative association existed between incidence of hyperthermic temperatures and vitamin A concentration in the diet; calves fed 2300 IU of vitamin A/kg had approximately three times more hyperthermic readings than did calves fed other treatments. A strong negative association also existed between fecal score and concentration of vitamin A in the diet; calves fed diets containing low vitamin A concentration had a higher incidence of high fecal scores (more watery) than did calves fed diets with higher vitamin A concentrations. Although slight differences were detected in serum retinol concentration, growth performance and incidence of ocular and nasal discharges were not different among treatment groups. Our data indicate that vitamin A concentrations of less than 9000 IU/kg of DM in milk replacers result in declining liver vitamin A stores in preruminant calves. Using the human Dietary Reference Intakes as a model for calculating the requirement, we recommend that the vitamin A requirement for preruminant calves should be increased to 11,000 IU of vitamin A/kg of DM.  相似文献

A selenium supplementation study was conducted with Holstein cows to evaluate amounts and methods of administration, namely, oral supplementation (1 vs. 2 mg/head/d, last 60 d of gestation) and intramuscular injection (50 mg at 40 and 20 d prepartum vs. 50 mg at 60, 40, and 20 d prepartum). Blood was collected every 10 d, starting 60 d prepartum and extending 20 d postpartum for cows, and at birth to 20 d for calves. Hair samples of cows were obtained at 60 to 40 and 20 d prepartum, and of the calves at birth. Colostrum samples were obtained for assay. Oral (2 mg/d) and both injection treatments resulted in increased selenium in serum of cows, but selenium in serum of calves at birth was greater only for those whose dams received selenium by injection. Selenium in hair of cows was increased by both injection treatments as well as by the oral treatment of 2 mg/d. Selenium in hair of calves was increased by all methods of administering selenium to the dams. Selenium in colostrum was not affected by any treatment. Thus, pregnant dairy cattle respond to selenium supplementations of a daily oral intake of 2 mg/head/d, the last 60 d of gestation, or by injection of 50 mg each on d 40 and 20 prepartum.  相似文献

Effects of vitamin A or beta-carotene supplementation during the dry period and early lactation on the frequency of new intramammary infection and clinical mastitis and on SCC and milk yield were examined. Eighty-two Holstein cows were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) 50,000 IU/d of vitamin A per cow (approximately equivalent to 1978 NRC recommended daily intake for dairy cows); 2) 170,000 IU/d of vitamin A per cow; or 3) 50,000 IU/d of vitamin A plus 300 mg of beta-carotene per cow. Cows were supplemented during the 2 wk before drying off, throughout the dry period, and for the first 6 wk of lactation. Concentrations of serum vitamin A did not differ among treatment groups but tended to decrease for all treatment groups from 14 d before drying off to calving. After calving, serum vitamin A tended to increase in all groups through wk 6 of lactation. Serum beta-carotene tended to be higher in beta-carotene-supplemented cows at dry-off, in the early dry period, and again during lactation. Serum beta-carotene decreased sharply in all groups during the prepartum period. The frequency of clinical mastitis and of new intramammary infection during the dry period, near parturition, and for the first 6 wk of lactation did not differ among treatment groups. The percentage of quarters newly infected over the entire trial was 26.8 in the control, 25.0 in the high vitamin A, and 30.6 in the beta-carotene group. Pathogens isolated most frequently were coagulase-negative staphylococci, streptococci other than Streptococcus agalactiae, and coliforms.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Effect of supplemental vitamin E on the immune system of calves   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The effect of vitamin E on immune responses of Holstein calves was investigated. Treatments were: 0,1400, and 2800 mg of dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate given orally at weekly intervals or 1400 mg of dl-alpha-tocopherol weekly by injection. Calves were fed milk for 6 wk and then fed a complete calf starter ad libitum. Calves were on experiment until they were 12 wk of age. Lymphocyte stimulation indices were significantly higher for calves given the high amount of oral supplementation and for injected calves than for unsupplemented calves. There were no significant differences at any of the individual weeks between unsupplemented and orally supplemented calves. Injected calves showed significantly higher values than unsupplemented calves at wk 4 and than all other calves at wk 8. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of immunoglobulins G1 and G2 among treatments. Immunoglobulin M was significantly higher at wk 6 in calves given the high amount of oral supplementation than in all other calves. At wk 12, serum from calves given the high amount of oral supplementation and calves given injections inhibited infectious bovine rhinotracheitis viral replication in tissue cultures as compared with those of unsupplemented calves. In supplemental experiments serum alpha-tocopherol and lymphocyte stimulation indices of yearling heifers determined 7 d after a single injection of 2000 IU of dl-alpha-tocopherol were significantly higher than preinjection values. In vitro addition of vitamin E to lymphocyte cultures did not increase phytohemagglutinin-induced blastogenesis.  相似文献

An accurate assessment of vitamin A status can be determined by analysis of liver biopsy samples; however, liver biopsies are not always feasible. Plasma concentrations of vitamin A do not provide an accurate indication of vitamin A status. The objective of this study, therefore, was to determine the ability of the relative dose response assay to indicate the vitamin A status of Holstein calves. Calves were obtained at birth and assigned to vitamin A treatments (0, 1700, 34,000, or 68,000 IU/d) added to milk replacer. Liver biopsies and relative dose response assays were performed at birth and 4 wk. Calves supplemented with 1700, 34,000, or 68,000 IU of vitamin A/d had adequate (greater than 20 microg/g) liver concentrations of vitamin A at 4 wk of age. The relative dose response assay at 4 wk was correlated with liver concentrations of vitamin A. Both the relative dose response assay and liver concentrations of vitamin A indicated that calves not supplemented with vitamin A had low vitamin A status, whereas other treatment groups had adequate vitamin A status. Plasma concentrations of retinol increased by 4 wk of age in calves receiving supplemental vitamin A at 34,000 IU and 68,000 IU/d and decreased in unsupplemented calves; however, all calves had concentrations of <20 microg of retinol/dl of plasma. The relative dose response assay agreed with liver biopsies as an indication of vitamin A status, whereas plasma concentrations of retinol incorrectly indicated all treatment groups were deficient in vitamin A.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for ruminant animals affecting both performance and immune functions. Adding 3 mg of Se/L (in the form of Na selenite) to colostrum has been shown to improve IgG absorption in Se-deficient newborn dairy calves. The objective of our study was to determine the effect of supranutritional maternal and colostral Se supplementation on IgG status of Se-replete dairy calves. The study design was a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design. During the last 8 wk before calving, dairy cows at a commercial dairy were fed either 0 (control cows) or 105 mg of Se-yeast once weekly (supranutritional Se-yeast-supplemented cows), in addition to Na selenite at 0.3 mg of Se/kg of DM in their ration. After birth, calves were fed pooled colostrum from control or supranutritional Se-yeast-supplemented cows to which 0 or 3 mg of Se/L (in the form of Na selenite) was added. Concentrations of whole-blood (WB) Se and serum Se measured at birth and at 48 h and 14 d of age, and serum IgG concentrations measured at 48 h and 14 and 60 d of age were determined. Calves born to Se-yeast-supplemented cows had higher WB-Se and serum-Se concentrations for the first 2 wk, and higher IgG absorption efficiency (62% at 48 h), resulting in higher serum-IgG concentrations (43% at 48 h and 65% at 14 d) and higher total serum-IgG content (50% at 48 h and 75% at 14 d), compared with calves born to control cows. Calves that received colostrum with added Na selenite had higher WB-Se concentrations for the first 2 wk, but only at 14 d of age were serum-Se concentrations, serum-IgG concentrations (53% higher), and total serum-IgG content (56% higher) higher, compared with calves that were fed colostrum without added Na selenite. Calves born to Se-yeast-supplemented cows that received colostrum from Se-yeast cows without added Na selenite had a higher IgG absorption efficiency compared with all other treatment groups. Our results support that feeding cows supranutritional Se-yeast supplement during the dry period or spiking colostrum with Na selenite both improve IgG status of Se-replete calves.  相似文献

Vitamin A and beta-carotene improved mammary health in dairy cows around dry off. To define possible mechanisms, cows were fed 1) 53,000 IU vitamin A, 2) 213,000 IU vitamin A, or 3) 53,000 IU vitamin A plus 400 mg beta-carotene/cow per d (n = 10/treatment) from 6 wk before to 2 wk after dry off. Blood polymorphonuclear neutrophil function (phagocytosis, kill, and chemotaxis) and lymphocyte proliferation were measured at wk -6, 0 (dry off), and 2. Concentrations of vitamin A in serum did not differ across vitamin treatments. beta-Carotene in serum was elevated in cows fed beta-carotene. Treatment did not influence phagocytosis or kill. Kill ability increased after dry off in all treatment groups, but phagocytosis tended to decrease after dry off in cows fed vitamin A only. Lymphocyte blastogenesis stimulated by concanavalin A on wk 2 for cows fed 53,000 IU vitamin A but did not vary in the other two groups. Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated blastogenesis peaked at wk 0 and then decreased to pretreatment values by wk 2 in cows fed 213,000 IU vitamin A. These data indicate lymphocyte function is influenced by vitamin A supplementation and that beta-carotene supplementation seems to exert a stabilizing effect on neutrophil and lymphocyte function during the period around dry off.  相似文献

Sixteen pregnant Shorthorn cows were winter-fed either oat or barley silage, both of which were low in selenium (<.l ppm). Two months before calving, as well as at calving and a month later, four cows on each diet were given intramuscularly a preparation containing 1360 IU of vitamin E and 30 mg selenium as sodium selenite. Barley silage lipids contained higher linoleic (33.2 versus 22.3%) and palmitic acids (32.3 versus 23.1%), and lower oleic (6.3 versus 22.1%) and linolenic acids (20.9 versus 30.9%) than oat silage. Three calves born from the untreated dams on barley silage died from nutritional muscular dystrophy by 50 days of age whereas none of the calves died either from the untreated cows on oat silage or from any of the selenium/ vitamin E treated cows. Milk from untreated cows fed barley silage contained a higher proportion of linoleic acid than that from treated cows or from those on oat silage. The incidence of nutritional muscular dystrophy was associated closely with ingestion by the calves of an increased amount of dietary dienoic acid. It appears an advantage to include oat silage in winter feeding programs for beef cows to reduce the risk of development of nutritional muscular dystrophy in the offspring.  相似文献

Male Holstein calves were used to test the effect of feeding 400 mg of free gossypol/kg of diet and to determine whether vitamin E could counteract gossypol toxicity. Fifty-two calves were allotted to treatments as follows: 1) soybean meal-based starter; 2) cottonseed meal-based starter; 3) cottonseed meal-based starter + 2000 IU of vitamin E/d per calf, and 4) cottonseed meal-based starter + 4000 IU of vitamin E/d per calf. Vitamin E supplementation (treatments 3 and 4) improved weight gain and feed intake over calves on treatment 1. Gossypol concentrations in plasma were higher in calves on treatments 2, 3, and 4 than in calves on treatment 1; however, no differences were observed among animals receiving the three cottonseed meal diets. Hemoglobin and hematocrit were decreased in calves receiving treatment 2, and vitamin E supplementation counteracted this effect (treatments 3 and 4). Plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations were not affected by gossypol intake and followed the vitamin E supplementation pattern During the experimental period, 10 calves died, six from treatment 2 and two each from treatments 3 and 4. Necropsy findings from 4 of 10 calves were suggestive of gossypol toxicity. Histopathological examination revealed centrilobular necrosis in the liver and atrophy and vacuolation of cardiocytes. Feeding cottonseed meal caused death of some calves with gossypol related toxicity signs, but did not decrease plasma alpha-tocopherol; however, vitamin E supplementation increased performance and may have conferred some protection against gossypol toxicity.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to determine whether source of supplemental α-tocopherol fed to periparturient dairy cows affects neutrophil function and vitamin E status of the cow and the neonatal calf. Starting 14 d before anticipated calving and continuing until 14 d post-parturition, cows were fed diets with no supplemental vitamin E or with 2,500 IU/d of vitamin E from all-rac α-tocopheryl acetate or RRR α-tocopheryl acetate. All-rac α-tocopherol contains equimolar amounts of all 8 stereoisomers, whereas the RRR contains only the RRR isomer. Concentrations of α-tocopherol in cow plasma, colostrum, milk, and blood neutrophils were greatest for the RRR treatment, intermediate for all-rac, and lowest for cows fed no supplemental vitamin E. The concentration of α-tocopherol in plasma of newborn calves was very low and not affected by treatment but after 6 feedings of their dam's colostrum or milk, concentrations in calf plasma followed the same treatment pattern as cow plasma. The number of bacteria phagocytized was greater by neutrophils from cows fed all-rac vitamin E than for the other 2 treatments, which resulted in a greater number of bacteria being killed. For cows fed all-rac vitamin E, the RRR isomer comprised about 20% of the α-tocopherol consumed but approximately 60% of the α-tocopherol in plasma and milk. This enrichment was caused mostly by an almost complete discrimination against the 2S isomers. Because all-rac α-tocopherol is 50% 2S isomers, these data suggest that 1 g of all-rac tocopheryl acetate is equivalent to 0.5 g of RRR tocopheryl acetate.  相似文献
