In July 2007, a 250 m long suspension bridge for pedestrians was inaugurated in the city of Saßnitz on Rügen Island in the German part of the Baltic Sea. The curved part of the deck of 120 m length is supported by cables on one side only. The bridge, one of the longest of its kind, is part of an urban renewal project. It reconnects Saßnitz Harbour to the city, being separated from each other during the cold war. The most interesting feature of this bridge is the cantilevering support girders that protrude from the deck to connect to the hangers so that their axes aim towards the centre of gravity of the pertinent deck section. This structural solution allows for one‐sided hanger supports without causing bending or torsion in the curved girder due to distributed dead load or live loads. The paper describes the structural concept of the Saßnitz Bridge. It also elaborates on structural design and erection issues.

The Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum – an industrial building transformed to a concert hall. A protected historical industrial building, the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum, has been transformed into a high‐quality concert hall according to the design of the architects Petzinka Pink Architekten, Düsseldorf. The highly motivated team was confronted with great demands on architecture, technique and function and successfully satisfied all expectations.

The unknown angle of Fritz Leonhardt – His contribution to steel construction. Fritz Leonhardt (1909–1999) is one of the best known civil engineers of the 20th century. Publicly best known is his television tower in Stuttgart, civil engineers perceive him as a constructor of bridges, whose publications on pre‐stressed concrete set a standard. With this paper we focus on the less known role of Leonhardt as a steel constructor. His early works are mainly dedicated to this branch. With these constructions his fame within the civil engineering community startes. Additionally, after World War II Leonhardt had been one of the outstanding engineers developing light weight structures that had a great influence on the architecture of the Federal Republic of Germany. From a historical point of view, the personal networks created by Leonhardt are of special interest: his contacts to architects like Paul Bonatz, Gerd Lohmer, and engineers like Otto Graf in Stuttgart were formative for his rapid advancement in post‐war Germany.

Timber bridges – Long term monitoring results of moisture diffusion in the load carrying cross‐sections Timber road bridges have been built worldwide for centuries. The high performance of wood is approved through many constructions. However, there are still doubts about using wood by the planning engineer, which reduce the number of realized projects. The moisture induced stresses in cross‐sections according to the varied ambient climate are mainly investigated under laboratory conditions. The results show that the moisture content changes differently over the cross‐section and leads to moisture induced stresses. The discussion about methods for the assessment of the moisture induced stresses in timber bridge cross‐ections is continuing. Results observed in the long term monitoring of seven timber bridges provide first guidelines for practitioners. For all constructions, the moisture content was measured regarding the ambient micro climate. As result, the influences according to the ambient micro climate are not insignificant. Positive is that the directly measured moisture content is less compared to the equilibrium moisture content calculated from the data of a close by meteorological station. The analysis of the moisture gradient over the cross‐section allows the definition of an active or passive zone.
