The dynamic viscosity () of stimulated whole saliva in a typical pre-orthodontic sample population was characterized as a function of temperature (T). Samples were collected from 30 adolescents or young adults, after screening for factors that are known to have an effect on salivary viscosity. Using a cone and plate viscometer, 1.5 ml of stimulated whole saliva was evaluated at a constant shear rate of 450 s-1 from T=20°C to T=40°C. Data from the -T plots showed a negative dependence of the form, =a–bT, over a range of from 1.08 to 2.45 centipoise (cps) at 34°C. Most of the samples fell into a narrow envelope, where the mean of the saliva samples ranged from 2.42±0.61 cps at 20°C to 1.57±0.32 cps at 37°C. With regard to sample stability, viscosity-time plots indicated that a small but predictable decrease in occurred during the 3 h period. The -T plots generated from fresh and frozen saliva samples demonstrated an appreciable change in as a result of refrigeration. With regard to sample reproducibility, viscometric data obtained from a typical pre-orthodontic patient over a 1-week period fluctuated within a fairly broad envelope of values.Presented, in part, at the 21st Annual Meeting and Exhibition of the A.A.D.R., Boston, Massachusetts, March, 1992.  相似文献

An analysis has been made of phase-slip and critical-velocity data for both the ac and dc flow of superfluid 4 He through a 2 m by 2 m aperture in a 0.1-m-thick titanium foil between 0.36 and 2.10 K. Single-2 phase slips were resolvable over the entire range of temperature in the ac flow measurements, carried out between 10 and 20 Hz, making it possible to determine the width of the critical-velocity distribution throughout the temperature range from these measurements. These data have been interpreted in terms of the thermal nucleation of vortex half-rings at the walls of the aperture, involving a velocity- and temperature-dependent energy barrier. The barrier can be modeled with moderate success using an approach close to that of Avenel and Varoquaux and coworkers.  相似文献

The absorption spectrum of ZnO precipitates in ZnSe saturated with oxygen is studied in the spectral range 500–2000 cm–1 and is shown to correlate with the transmission spectrum of single-crystal ZnO. Saturation of ZnSe with oxygen in the course of growth leads to ZnO precipitation during cooling. The precipitates give rise to narrow absorption bands in the range 5.8–7.1 m, which correlate with the components of the multiphonon absorption spectrum of ZnO, formed by combinations of LO and TO phonons. The 2LO mode defines the long-wavelength transmission edge of ZnO. In addition, the spectrum shows strong absorptions due to the LO + TO(10.2 m) and 2TO (11.3 and 12.7 m) modes. The possible role of SeO2 is discussed. It is suggested that ZnO with a high carrier concentration may act as a gray filter in the spectral range 2–9 m.  相似文献

The field dependence of real () and imaginary () component of ac susceptibility of superconductors within the critical state model can conveniently be used for evaluating the critical current when field amplitude is larger than the penetration field. A method to analyze the real () and imaginary () component of fundamental ac susceptibility with the objective of extracting the temperature dependence of critical current density J c(T) is reported. The procedure makes use of the ac susceptibility data of two polycrystalline (Bi-Pb)-2223 samples measured with different excitation amplitudes below and close to the critical temperature. The temperature dependence of J c is extracted using the isothermal scan over and data. Results obtained from this procedure are found to be in fair agreement with J c(T) calculated from traditional loss-maximum data.  相似文献

Single-mode As–S glass fibers with a core diameter from 3 to 20 m and a clad diameter of 125 m are prepared by the double-crucible method. The cutoff wavelength of the fibers is 0.9–6 m. The lowest transmission losses in the fibers at 2.2–2.3 m are 100 dB/km, and their mean bending strength is 800–1000 MPa.  相似文献

We have observed an excess heat capacity in liquid and bcc solid 3He at low temperatures. The heat capacity in the normal fluid is found to be the sum of the heat capacity of bulk normal fluid and a temperature-independent heat capacity C due to amorphous solid layers on the silver sinter surface, where C=7.3±6.8 JK–1m–2 corresponds to 1.6±0.6 amorphous solid layers. The heat capacity for bcc solid 3He is the sum of the heat capacity originating from the multiple-exchange interaction and a temperature independent heat capacity. The excess heat capacity C=12.1±3.1 JK–1m–2 for bcc solid corresponds to 1.9±0.3 amorphous solid layers. Our result indicates that the amorphous solid layers on an amorphous substrate yield a universal C in unit area throughout liquid, solid and adsorbed 3He.  相似文献

Summary The flow of a viscous ferrofluid over a stretching sheet in the presence of a magnetic dipole is considered. The fluid momentum and thermal energy equations are fomulated as a five-parameter problem, and the influence of the magneto-thermomechanical coupling is explored numerically. Simultaneous measurements of magnetic susceptibility from 0.5 to 10 mK and pressure from 2.88 to 3.54 MPa have been made in 3 He nano-clusters embedded in a 4 He matrix, following phase separation. The susceptibility of the 3.54 MPa, all-solid sample behaves similarly to that of bulk 3 He for v=21.3 cm 3 /mole, with a Weiss constant =–250K. For the 2.88 MPa, liquid-droplet sample, =140K, indicating a ferromagnetic tendency, similar to 2-D films at some coverages. At intermediate pressures, has a peak near 1.05 mK, but without a discontinuity. For all samples, had a solid-like contribution to the lowest temperatures. Magnetic ordering in nano-clusters appears to be different than the U2D2 phase of bulk 3 He.  相似文献

We have measured ac susceptibility, nuclear magnetic resonance, and nuclear heat capacity of two PtFe x samples with concentrations of magnetic impurities x = 11 ppm and 41 ppm at magnetic fields (0 ± 0.05) mTB248 mT. The susceptibility data have been measured at temperatures of 0.3 KT100 mK, no hint for nuclear magnetic ordering could be detected to a temperature of 0.3 K. The nuclear heat capacity data taken at 1.4 KT10 mK show enhanced values which scale with x at low polarization. This effect is described by a model assuming an internal magnetic field caused by the impurities. No indication for nuclear magnetic ordering could be detected to 1.4 K. The nuclear magnetic resonance experiments have been performed on these samples at 0.8 KT0.5 mK and 2.5 mTB22.8 mT as well as on three other samples with x = 5, 10, 31 ppm in a different setup at 40 KT0.5 mK and at 5.4 mTB200 mT. Spin-lattice and effective spin-spin relaxation times 1and 2 * of 195 Pt strongly depend on x and on the external magnetic field. No temperature dependence of 1and 2 * could be detected and the NMR data, too, give no hint for nuclear magnetic ordering to 0.8 K.  相似文献

We describe a technique for performing high resolution calorimetry on samples with very small heat capacity (10J/K). This involves using ac calorimetry, in which the sample is subjected to temperature oscillations, with simultaneous dc regulation of the average temperature. This method works well for small samples of 4 He, where adiabatic calorimetry would be impossible. We study the frequency response of our system using a modified Sullivan-Seidel equation, which allows for small temperature inhomogeneities at high frequencies. These procedures enable one to obtain heat capacity data possessing a high degree of absolute accuracy.  相似文献

Recent measurements in superfluid 3 He-B have been interpreted as evidence in support of the Kibble-Zurek hypothesis for the formation of defects in the early Universe. The superfluid 3 He analogue to the cosmic string is the quantum vortex. We report here the preliminary attempts to detect the heat evolution from the decay of this vorticity in superfluid 3 He-B at temperatures down to 110 K. We produce vorticity by neutron irradiation of a small superfluid 3 He-B sample and attempt to measure the heat released as the vorticity decays. We detect a long time scale heat release and find that the lifetime of this decay varies inversely proportional to the quasiparticle excitation number density in the superfluid. However, we have yet to be convinced that this heat is from the decay of vorticity.  相似文献

Casting of TiAl alloys is receiving more and more research because of its relatively low cost. One problem with this technology is that the coarse microstructure developed during solidification is harmful to material properties. Thus it is essential to seek an approach to refining the cast microstructure and this approach may also be applicable to cast components. In this study, a novel heat treatment route is proposed to obtain a fine fully lamellar structure from a cast TiAl alloy with a grain size of 1000 m. This route consists of three steps, namely pretreatment to have a feathery structure, annealing in the + region to have a fine near gamma structure and solution treatment to develop a fully lamellar structure with a grain size of 30 m.  相似文献

We report the first investigation of the impact of nuclear magnetism on superconductivity in the tetragonal metal indium. We have measured the superconducting critical field Bc(T) and in its vicinity the nuclear magnetic heat capacity at ultralow temperatures, 170 KT200 mK. We compare the measured quantities with calculations which consider the nuclear magnetic Zeeman and the dominating nuclear electric quadrupole interaction in indium. The heat capacity data support the occurence of a positive sign of the electrical field gradient at nuclear sites and in consequence the existence of a nuclear low spin ground state. Surprisingly, at lowest investigated temperatures, 170 KT1 mK, the reduction of the critical field Bc(T) clearly exceeds the size of the calculated magnetization 0 M(Bc, T) which is limited by the nuclear low spin ground state. In all other materials the interplay of nuclear magnetism and superconductivity has been studied so far (Al, AuAl 2 , AuIn 2 , Rh, and Sn), the bare nuclear magnetization appeared as an upper limit of the reduction of the critical field.  相似文献

The profile distributions of a focused Gaussian beam of 63-m laser radiation for E- and H-polarizations were recorded by a thin-wire bolometer 3 m in diameter. The profiles were used to determine the beam diameters, which were D E = (8.16 ± 0.12) m and D H = (8.00 ± 0.12) m upon elimination of the dominant systematic errors.  相似文献

This paper deals with the problem of twisting of a non-homogeneous, isotropic, half-space by rotating a circular part of its boundary surface (0ra, z = 0) through a given angle. A ring (a<r<b, z = 0) outside this circle is stress-free and the remaining part (r>b, z = 0) is rigidly clamped. The shear modulus is assumed to vary with the cylindrical coordinates r, z by the power law ( = , r z ). Such a dependence is of practical interest in the context of Soil Mechanics. The problem leads to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind which is solved numerically, giving an evaluation of the influence of non-homogeneity on the torque at the surface and the stress intensity factor. The homogeneous case studied in [16] is recovered. Expressions for some quantities of physical importance such as the torque applied at the surface and stress intensity factor are obtained. It appears from our investigation that the influence of clamping dies out with increasing and . Quantitative evaluations are given and some curves for the relative increase, due to clamping, in the torque and in the stress intensity factor are presented.  相似文献

Ferroelectric PbTi0.6Zr0.4O3films 0.5–1.5 m in thickness were produced on platinum substrates by spray pyrolysis of carboxylate solutions. The optimized compositions of the precursor solutions, containing methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol, are stable under normal conditions, allow the annealing temperature to be reduced, and lead to higher quality film surfaces and large grains. The film exhibit the following electrical properties: T C= 360–460°C, max= 1750 at T C, tan = 0.02–0.1 at 1 kHz and room temperature, P s max = 18 C/cm2, P r max = 15 C/cm2at 50 Hz, and E c= 42–120 kV/cm.  相似文献

Sensitive vapor pressure (P sat) measurements of 3 He- 4 He mixtures by means of a low-temperature strain gauge are described over the temperature range 0.5–1.5 K and the range 0.4<X<0.85, whereX is the 3 He mole fraction in the liquid phase. The vapor pressure cell is flat, with a height of only 2 mm, in order to reduce concentration gradients near the tricritical point. The pressure-sensitive device, which resolves changes of about 5×10 –8 atm, is described, and its advantages over a conventional manometer system are discussed. Data taken successively on mixtures of small mole fraction difference are used to locate the phase separation boundary in theT-X plane and also the lambda line from a change in (P sat/T) x at these transitions. The limiting slopes (dT/dX) and (dT/dX) of the phase separation curve and the lambda line in the vicinity of their junction point, the tricritical point, are presented and compared with previous work. From the vapor pressure data, the concentration susceptibility (X/) T,P was obtained. Here = 3 4 is the chemical potential difference of the respective isotopic components 3 He and 4 He. It is shown that (X/) t diverges as the tricritical point is approached along various paths in theT-X plane, and the relevant tricritical exponents are presented. The weak divergence of (X/) T along the lambda line predicted from the postulates of Griffiths and Wheeler could not be detected and it is believed that such divergence has to occur in a temperature interval that is far too small to be resolved with present-day techniques. Furthermore, gravity effects might well prevent observation of the weak divergence. The lambda transition is well evidenced by a distinct shoulder in a plot of (X/) T at constantX as a function ofT. This shoulder becomes smaller and gradually gets topped by a peak asX decreases from the tricritical mole fractionX t . From a combination of vapor pressure and calorimetric data the chemical potential difference [(X, T)- t ] is calculated between 0.78 and 1.22 K. Here t is the value at the tricritical point. From this tabulation the critical line and its slope (d/dT) are obtained and compared with previous values based on calorimetric experiments only and with calculations based on the excess chemical potentials 3 E and 4 E derived from saturated vapor pressure data.Work supported by a Grant from the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

A series of thin monocrystalline KNO3 layers has been grown from the melt by a special technique. The changes of the dielectric constant, d.c. resistivity, activation energy and pyro-electric current behaviour with the layer thickness and temperature have been investigated. Also, the effect of the a.c. frequency on the dielectric constant is checked in the frequency range 1 to 10 kHz. A sharp drop in dielectric constant could be recorded up to 6 kHz. The layers exhibit essentially the same dielectric and pyroelectric properties as bulk KNO3 single crystals. The various measured parameters of these layers were found to be thickness-dependent. TheI-V characteristics of the layers (5m thickness) reveal the presence of breakdown voltage at 10.95V. Maximum pyrocurrent was obtained at positive d.c. biasing voltage. Also, the layers show a high pyroelectric coefficient, e.g. for layer thickness 8.9m, = 60C cm–2 K–1 at 180° C. The study proved that thin layers of potassium nitrate have good pyroelectric properties and should be useful as pyroelectric thermal detector material.  相似文献

Single-crystal (Cz) silicon wafers [(100) p-type] were cut in air, d6onked (DI) water and ethanol, at room temperature, 150 and 200°C by a diamond impregnated dicing wheel using a specially designed apparatus. The effects of environmental fluids and temperature on the cut surface morphology were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM investigation showed that gouging and ploughing is predominant when silicon is cut in DI water or ethanol. Debris size analysis showed that the mean diameter of the volume distribution (MV) of debris formed in ethanol at room temperature was 9.5 m while that formed in air was 1.3 m. The surface morphology is significantly different at 150 and 200° C as compared to room temperature, i.e. the width of individual wear tracks varied from 0,8 m for room temperature to 1.6 m for 200° C.  相似文献

We have measured the nuclear specific heat Cn and nuclear susceptibility n of In nuclei (I=9/2, =5.5 n) in the cubic intermetallic compound AuIn2 (Korringa constant =0.11 Ksec) in the normal conducting state at 30K10mK and 2mTB115 mT. Our data show a positive nuclear Weiss temperature =+ 43 K and that the In nuclei undergo a nuclear ferromagnetic transition at Tc=35 K. The In nuclei experience an internal field of about 10 mT (obtained from Cn at T>Tc ). The nuclear ordering temperature Tc and the internal field increase with applied magnetic field. From the data we deduce exchange constants for the investigated system. The critical entropy reduction S(Tc)/Smax=8.6% and critical enthalpy E=0.28 RTc are in reasonable agreement with the measured ordering temperature Tc,applying the Heisenberg model for a simple cubic I=9/2 spin system. The nuclear spin relaxation time calculated from the real and imaginary parts of n is 10 msec at T>50 K, but drops to <1msec at Tc.This is the first observation of a spontaneous nuclear magnetic ordering transition in a not-hyperfine-enhanced metal at thermal equilibrium, i.e. at T nuclear =T electron .  相似文献
