The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for test-day milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and its relationships with milk production traits. Three test-day morning milk samples were collected from 1,953 Holstein-Friesian heifers located on 398 commercial herds in the Netherlands. Each sample was analyzed for somatic cell count, net energy concentration, MUN, and the percentage of fat, protein, and lactose. Genetic parameters were estimated using an animal model with covariates for days in milk and age at first calving, fixed effects for season of calving and effect of test or proven bull, and random effects for herd-test day, animal, permanent environment, and error. Coefficient of variation for MUN was 33%. Estimated heritability for MUN was 0.14. Phenotypic correlation of MUN with each of the milk production traits was low. The genetic correlation was close to zero for MUN and lactose percentage (−0.09); was moderately positive for MUN and net energy concentration of milk (0.19), fat yield (0.41), protein yield (0.38), lactose yield (0.22), and milk yield (0.24), and percentage of fat (0.18), and percentage of protein (0.27); and was high for MUN and somatic cell score (0.85). Herd-test day explained 58% of the variation in MUN, which suggests that management adjustments at herd-level can reduce MUN. This study shows that it is possible to influence MUN by herd practice and by genetic selection.  相似文献

Estimation of genetic parameters for concentrations of milk urea nitrogen   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The objective of this study was to use field data collected by dairy herd improvement programs to estimate genetic parameters for concentrations of milk urea nitrogen (MUN). Edited data were 36,074 test-day records of MUN and yields of milk, fat, and protein obtained from 6102 cows in Holstein herds in Ontario, Canada. Data were divided into three sets, for the first three lactations. Two analyses were performed on data from each lactation. The first procedure used ANOVA to estimate the significance of the effects of several environmental factors on MUN. Herd-test-day effects had the most significant impact on MUN. Effects of stage of lactation were also important, and MUN levels tended to increase from the time of peak yield until the end of lactation. The second analysis used a random regression model to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations of MUN and the yield traits. Heritability estimates for MUN in lactations one, two, and three were 0.44, 0.59, and 0.48, respectively. Heritabilities for the yield traits were of a similar magnitude. Little relationship was observed between MUN and yield. Raw phenotypic correlations were all <0.10 (absolute value). Genetic correlations with production traits were close to zero in lactations one and three and only slightly positive in lactation two. The results indicate that selection on MUN is possible, but relationships between MUN and other economically important traits such as metabolic disease and fertility are needed.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for major milk fatty acids and milk production traits. One morning milk sample was collected from 1,918 Holstein-Friesian heifers located in 398 commercial herds in the Netherlands. Each sample was analyzed for total percentages of fat and protein, and for detailed fatty acid percentages (computed as fatty acid weight as a proportion of total fat weight). Intraherd heritabilities were high for C4:0 to C16:0, ranging from 0.42 for C4:0 to 0.71 for C10:0. Saturated and unsaturated C18 fatty acids had intraherd heritability estimates of approximately 0.25, except for C18:2 cis-9, trans-11, which was 0.42. Standard errors of the heritabilities were between 0.07 and 0.12. Genetic correlations were high and positive among C4:0 to C14:0, as well as among unsaturated C18, but correlations of C4:0 to C14:0 with unsaturated C18 were generally weak. The genetic correlation of C16:0 with fat percentage was positive (0.65), implying that selection for fat percentage should result in a correlated increase of C16:0, whereas unsaturated C18 fatty acids decreased with increasing fat percentage (−0.74). Milk fat composition can be changed by means of selective breeding, which offers opportunities to meet consumer demands regarding health and technological aspects.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to estimate heritabilities of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and lactose in the first 3 parities and their genetic relationships with milk, fat, protein, and SCS in Canadian Holsteins. Data were a random sample of complete herds (60,645 test day records of 5,022 cows from 91 herds) extracted from the edited data set, which included 892,039 test-day records of 144,622 Holstein cows from 4,570 herds. A test-day animal model with multiple-trait random regression and the Gibbs sampling method were used for parameter estimation. Regression curves were modeled using Legendre polynomials of order 4. A total of 6 separate 4-trait analyses, which included MUN, lactose, or both (yield or percentage) with different combinations of production traits (milk, fat and protein yield, fat and protein percentages, and somatic cell score) were performed. Average daily heritabilities were moderately high for MUN (from 0.384 to 0.414), lactose kilograms (from 0.466 to 0.539), and lactose percentage (from 0.478 to 0.508). Lactose yield was highly correlated with milk yield (0.979). Lactose percentage and MUN were not genetically correlated with milk yield. However, lactose percentage was significantly correlated with somatic cell score (−0.202). The MUN was correlated with fat (0.425) and protein percentages (0.20). Genetic correlations among parities were high for MUN, lactose percentage, and yield. Estimated breeding values (EBV) of bulls for MUN were correlated with fat percentage EBV (0.287) and EBV of lactose percentage were correlated with lactation persistency EBV (0.329). Correlations between lactose percentage and MUN with fertility traits were close to zero, thus diminishing the potential of using those traits as possible indicators of fertility.  相似文献

A total of 13,066 first-lactation test-day records of 2,277 Valle del Belice ewes from 17 flocks were used to estimate genetic parameters for somatic cell scores (SCS) and milk production traits, using a repeatability test-day animal model. Heritability estimates were low and ranged from 0.09 to 0.14 for milk, fat, and protein yields, and contents. For SCS, the heritability of 0.14 was relatively high. The repeatabilities were moderate and ranged from 0.29 to 0.47 for milk production traits. The repeatability for SCS was 0.36. Flock-test-day explained a large proportion of the variation for milk production traits, but it did not have a big effect on SCS. The genetic correlations of fat and protein yields with fat and protein percentages were positive and high, indicating a strong association between these traits. The genetic correlations of milk production traits with SCS were positive and ranged from 0.16 to 0.31. The results showed that SCS is a heritable trait in Valle del Belice sheep and that single-trait selection for increased milk production will also increase SCS.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of milk urea concentration (MU) and its genetic correlations with milk production traits, longevity, and functional traits in the first 3 parities in dairy cows. The edited data set consisted in 9,107,349 MU test-day records from the first 3 parities of 560,739 cows in 2,356 herds collected during the years 1994 to 2020. To estimate the genetic parameters of MU, data of 109 randomly selected herds, with a total of 770,016 MU test-day records, were used. Genetic parameters and estimated breeding values were estimated using a multiple-trait (parity) random regression model. Herd-test-day, age-year-season of calving, and days in milk classes (every 5 d as a class) were used as fixed effects, whereas effects of herd-year of calving, permanent environment, and animal were modeled using random regressions and Legendre polynomials of order 2. The average daily heritability and repeatability of MU during days in milk 5 to 365 in the first 3 parities were 0.19, 0.22, 0.20, and 0.48, 0.48, 0.47, respectively. The mean genetic correlation estimated among MU in the first 3 parities ranged from 0.96 to 0.97. The average daily estimated breeding values for MU of the selected bulls (n = 1,900) ranged from −9.09 to 7.37 mg/dL. In the last 10 yr, the genetic trend of MU has gradually increased. The genetic correlation between MU and 11 traits of interest ranged from –0.28 (milk yield) to 0.28 (somatic cell score). The findings of this study can be used as the first step for development of a routine genetic evaluation for MU and its inclusion into the genetic selection program in the Walloon Region of Belgium.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration and describe the genetic relationship between MUN and reproductive performance and between MUN and diseases in Holsteins. Dairy Records Management Systems (Raleigh, NC) provided lactation data. The Danish Agricultural Advisory Center provided breeding value estimates for diseases. Infrared (IR) and wet chemistry (WC) data were analyzed separately. Heritabilities and genetic correlations for 2 different measures of MUN and reproductive performance were estimated with an animal model using ASREML. Heritabilities for MUN were estimated using all lactations combined (lactations 1 through 5) and separately for first lactation and second lactation. Genetic correlations with reproduction and health were estimated separately for parities 1 and 2. Herd-test-day or herd-year-season along with age at calving and days in milk were included as fixed effects in all models. Heritability estimates for all lactations combined were 0.15 for WC MUN and 0.22 for IR MUN. Genetic correlations between WC MUN and 2 measures of reproductive performance, days to first service, and first service conception were not different from zero. In contrast, the genetic correlation between WC MUN and days open of 0.21 in first lactation and 0.41 in second lactation indicated that higher WC MUN values were associated with increased days open. Correlations among estimated breeding values for MUN and estimated breeding values for Danish diseases identified no significant relationships. Although the results of this study indicate that heritable variation for MUN exists, the inability to identify significant genetic relationships with several measures of disease or reproductive performance appears to limit the value of MUN in selection for disease resistance and improved reproduction.  相似文献

Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) is correlated with N balance, N intake, and dietary N content, and thus is a good indicator of proper feeding management with respect to protein. It is commonly used to monitor feeding programs to achieve environmental goals; however, genetic diversity also exists among cows. It was hypothesized that phenotypic diversity among cows could bias feed management decisions when monitoring tools do not consider genetic diversity associated with MUN. The objective of the work was to evaluate the effect of cow and herd variation on MUN. Data from 2 previously published research trials and a field trial were subjected to multivariate regression analyses using a mixed model. Analyses of the research trial data showed that MUN concentrations could be predicted equally well from diet composition, milk yield, and milk components regardless of whether dry matter intake was included in the regression model. This indicated that cow and herd variation could be accurately estimated from field trial data when feed intake was not known. Milk urea N was correlated with dietary protein and neutral detergent fiber content, milk yield, milk protein content, and days in milk for both data sets. Cow was a highly significant determinant of MUN regardless of the data set used, and herd trended to significance for the field trial data. When all other variables were held constant, a percentage unit change in dietary protein concentration resulted in a 1.1 mg/dL change in MUN. Least squares means estimates of MUN concentrations across herds ranged from a low of 13.6 mg/dL to a high of 17.3 mg/dL. If the observed MUN for the high herd were caused solely by high crude protein feeding, then the herd would have to reduce dietary protein to a concentration of 12.8% of dry matter to achieve a MUN concentration of 12 mg/dL, likely resulting in lost milk production. If the observed phenotypic variation is due to genetic differences among cows, genetic choices could result in herds that exceed target values for MUN when adhering to best management practices, which is consistent with the trend for differences in MUN among herds.  相似文献

The objectives of the present study were to estimate genetic parameters of milk fatty acid unsaturation indices in Canadian Holsteins. Data were available on milk fatty acid composition of 2,573 Canadian Holstein cows from 46 commercial herds enrolled in the Québec Dairy Production Centre of Expertise, Valacta (Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec, Canada). Individual fatty acid percentages (g/100 g of total fatty acids) were determined for each milk sample by gas chromatography. The unsaturation indices were calculated as the ratio of an unsaturated fatty acid to the sum of that unsaturated fatty acid and its corresponding substrate fatty acid, multiplied by 100. A mixed linear model was fitted under REML for the statistical analysis of milk fatty acid unsaturation indices. The statistical model included the fixed effects of parity, age at calving, and stage of lactation, each nested within parity, and the random effects of herd-year-season of calving, animal, and residual. Estimates of heritabilities for the C14, C16, C18, conjugated linoleic acid, and total unsaturation indices were 0.48, 0.25, 0.29, 0.14, and 0.19, respectively. Phenotypic and genetic correlation estimates among unsaturation indices were all positive and ranged from 0.20 to 0.65 and 0.23 to 0.81, respectively. The estimates of heritabilities and genetic correlations for milk fatty acid unsaturation indices suggest that genetic variation exists among cows in milk fatty acid unsaturation, and the proportions of desirable unsaturated fatty acids from a human health point of view may be increased in bovine milk through genetic selection.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for milk yield, contents of fat, total protein, casein and serum protein, individual laboratory cheese yield, and somatic cell counts (SCC) were estimated from 7492 monthly test-day records of 1119 Churra ewes. Estimates were from multivariate REML using analytical gradients (AG-REML) procedures. Except for fat content, estimates for the other routinely recorded traits (milk yield, protein content, and SCC) agreed with those previously obtained in this and other dairy sheep populations. Protein content and composition had the highest heritabilities and repeatabilities. Heritabilities for protein and casein contents were very similar (0.23 and 0.21, respectively), and genetic correlation between the traits was close to unity (0.99). Accordingly, casein content is not advisable as an alternative to protein content as a selection criterion in dairy ewes; it does not have any compelling advantages and costs more to measure. Individual laboratory cheese yield (ILCY) obtained with Churra ewes had a low heritability (0.08), suggesting that potential for selection for this parameter would be possible but is not recommended. All correlations with ILCY were high and positive except for milk yield. A high SCC was accompanied by an increase in serum protein content and involved a loss in milk yield.  相似文献

Crossbreeding has been shown to improve the longevity of dairy cattle in countries across the world. The aim of this study was to estimate heterosis, breed effects, and genetic parameters for longevity in crossbred dairy cattle among Danish Holstein (DH), Danish Red (DR), and Danish Jersey (DJ) breeds. Data were provided from 119 Danish commercial herds that use systematic crossbreeding (i.e., rotational crossbreeding). Additional data from 11 mixed-breed herds with DH and DJ were included to estimate reliable breed effects for DJ. Survival information on 73,741 cows was analyzed with a linear animal model using the artificial insemination–REML algorithm in the DMU package. Five longevity (L) traits were defined: days from first calving until the end of first lactation or culling (L1), days from first calving until the end of second lactation or culling (L2), days from first calving until the end of third lactation or culling (L3), days from first calving until the end of fourth lactation or culling (L4), and days from first calving until the end of fifth lactation or culling (L5). Heritabilities ranged between 0.022 and 0.090. Additive breed effects in units of days were estimated relative to DH for DR as ?0.5 (L1), +10.5 (L2), +18.5 (L3), +11.9 (L4), and +28.6 (L5), and corresponding figures for DJ were +2.0, +0.5, +14.2, +27.7, and +44.0. Heterosis effects in L1 were low (1.2%) but favorable in crosses between DH and DR, whereas negative heterosis effects were estimated for crosses between DH and DJ (?2.5%) and DR and DJ (?1.2%). The largest heterosis effects for L2, L3, L4, and L5 were found in DH × DR and were favorable (+3.3, +5.7, +7.7, and +8.5%, respectively). Corresponding figures for heterosis effects in DH × DJ and DR × DJ were favorable as well: +2.3, +4.1, +5.6, and +6.2% in DH × DJ and +3.1, +7.3, +6.9, and +7.2% in DR × DJ. The favorable heterosis effects show that crossbreeding is an efficient tool for improving longevity in Danish dairy cattle.  相似文献

Dietary protein levels are a risk factor for poor reproductive performance. Conception is particularly impaired in cases of high blood or milk urea. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between conception and low milk urea or changes in milk urea around artificial insemination (AI). Data were obtained from the French Milk Control Program for a 4-yr period (2009–2012). Milk urea values between 250 and 450 mg/kg (4.3 and 7.7 mM) were considered intermediate (I), and values ≤150 mg/kg (2.6 mM) were considered low (L). Milk urea values before and after each AI were allocated into 4 classes representing the dynamics of milk urea (before-after; I-I, I-L, L-I, and L-L). Subclinical ketosis was defined using milk fat and protein contents before AI as proxies. A logistic regression with a Poisson correction and herd as a random variable was then performed on data from Holstein or all breeds of cows. The success of conception was decreased [relative risk (95% confidence interval) = 0.96 (0.94–0.99)] in low-urea cows compared with intermediate-urea cows after AI; no significant association was found for urea levels before AI. When combining data on urea before and after AI, I-L urea cows exhibited a 5 to 9% decrease in conception compared with I-I urea cows, and L-I urea cows showed no difference in conception success compared with I-I urea cows. A decreased conception success for L-L urea cows compared with I-I urea cows was observed for the analysis with cows of all breeds. This work revealed that a decrease in urea from intermediate (before AI) to low (after AI) is a risk factor for conception failure. Surveys of variation in milk urea in dairy cows close to breeding are highly recommended.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to identify and evaluate production and environmental factors that influence milk urea (MU) in Israeli dairy herds, to analyze the relationships between MU concentration and nutritional variables, and to examine a possible association between MU and pregnancy rate (PR). Production and environmental data were obtained from the Israeli Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) Center (n = 1,279,600). Programmed total mixed rations (feeds and quantities) on milk-test day were collected from 42 dairy herds. Data on 36,073 cows that were inseminated close to milk-test day and pregnancy diagnosis results were obtained from the DHI data bank. Highly significant positive relationships were found between MU concentration and milk yield and fat percentage; relationships between MU and milk total protein percentage and somatic cell count were negative. Milk urea levels were higher during the summer months and were higher for adult cows. These levels increased as lactation progressed. Milk urea was positively associated with dietary levels of crude protein, ruminal digestible protein, and neutral detergent fiber contents; it was negatively associated with ration energy and nonstructural carbohydrate contents. Significant influences of specific feeds on MU were detected. A significant negative association was found between MU level and PR. Least squares means for PR for cows in the lowest and highest MU quartiles were 38.4 and 36.1%, respectively. Increasing levels of MU were negatively related to reproductive performance of dairy cows, but the risk of nonpregnancy caused by high levels of MU was lower than reported in previous studies.  相似文献

The hypothesis of this field study was that providing farmers with information regarding their herd's milk urea nitrogen (MUN) would result in more accurate feed management and a change in MUN toward target values. All dairy herd bulk tanks (n = 1156) in the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers' Cooperative were tested for MUN each month for six months ending in May 1999. Farmers (n = 454) who returned a survey were provided with the results of their MUN analysis each month along with interpretive information. Survey results indicated that most (89.5%) dairy farmers did not routinely use MUN prior to participating in the project, but most (88%) extension agents and nutritionists in the region recommended it. The average MUN across all farms in the study increased in the spring, but the increase was 0.52 mg/dl lower for farmers receiving MUN results than for those who did not participate in the program. Farmers who indicated they increased dietary crude protein (CP) due to low MUN started with MUN values that were 3 mg/dl below target but ended with target values. Farmers who indicated that they decreased CP due to high MUN began the project with high MUN but decreased it by 1 mg/dl compared to non-participating farmers. At the end of the project, 30% of farmers responding to a follow-up survey indicated they would use MUN analysis in the future. Providing MUN results and interpretive information to farmers was documented to change feeding practices and subsequent MUN results.  相似文献

A marker-assisted selection program (MAS) has been implemented in dairy cattle in France. The efficiency of such a selection program depends on the use of correct genetic parameters for the marked quantitative trait loci (QTL). Therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate the proportion of genetic variance explained by 4 QTL described in previous studies (these QTL are segregating on chromosomes 6, 14, 20, and 26). Genotypes for 11 markers were available for 3,974 bulls grouped within 54 sire families of the French Holstein population undergoing MAS. The parameters were estimated for 4 QTL and 5 dairy traits: milk, fat and protein yields, and fat and protein percentages. The proportion of genetic variance explained by the QTL ranged from as low as 0.03 to 0.36%. Both lack of marker informativity and poor monitoring of QTL transmission might limit the accuracy of estimation. The QTL explained a larger proportion of genetic variance for milk composition traits. The QTL on chromosome 14 and chromosomes 6 and 20 have their largest influence on fat and protein percentages, respectively. The overall proportions of genetic variance explained by the QTL were 27.0, 30.7, 24.1, 48.2, and 33.6% for milk, fat and protein yields, and fat and protein percentages, respectively. These results clearly indicated that a large part of the genetic variance is explained by a small number of QTL and that their use in MAS might be beneficial for dairy cattle breeding programs.  相似文献

Goat milk somatic cell counts have been collected for several years in France by the national milk recording organization. Information is used for health management, because repeatedly elevated somatic cell counts are a good indirect predictor of intramammary infection. Genetic parameters were estimated for 67,882 and 49,709 primiparous goats of the dairy Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively, with complete information for milk somatic cell counts and milk production traits. About 40% of the goats had additional information for 11 udder type traits scored by official classifiers of the breeders’ association CAPGENES. Estimates were obtained by REML with an animal model. The studied trait was lactation somatic cell score (LSCS), the weighted mean of somatic cell score (log-transformed SCC) adjusted for lactation stage. Heritability of LSCS was 0.20 and 0.24 in the Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively. Relationships with milk production and udder type traits were additionally estimated by using multitrait analyses. Heritability estimates in first lactation ranged from 0.30 to 0.35 for lactation milk, fat, and protein yields; from 0.60 to 0.67 for fat and protein contents; and from 0.22 to 0.50 for udder type traits. Genetic correlations of somatic cell score with milk production traits were generally low, ranging from −0.13 to 0.12. Slightly more negative correlations were estimated for fat content: −0.18 and −0.20 in Saanen and Alpine breeds, respectively. Lactation somatic cell score was genetically correlated with udder floor position (rg = −0.24 and −0.19 in the Alpine and Saanen breeds, respectively), and, in Saanen, teat length, teat width, and teat form (rg = 0.29, 0.34 and −0.27, respectively). These results suggest that a reduction in somatic cell count can be achieved by selection while still improving milk production and udder type and teat traits.  相似文献

Heritability of digital dermatitis (DD) and correlations between DD and type traits related to legs and feet were estimated from a linear animal model. Data comprised 93,391 national type evaluation records of pedigreed first-lactation Holstein-Friesian cows that calved from 2002 through 2006. At the time of classification, cows were housed in different housing systems (i.e., cubicles, straw yards, slatted or loafing yards) and on pasture. The type traits evaluated were locomotion score (LOCO), rear legs side view (RLS), foot angle (FA), bone quality and leg and feet composite (L&F). In addition, cows were examined for DD lesions at classification. The relationships among these type traits, lifespan (LS), production (milk and fat), fertility (calving interval and 56-d nonreturn) and DD were examined by estimating the approximate genetic correlations from sire estimated breeding values. The study also evaluated the association between DD and the housing systems as well as the general conditions of the farm flooring where classification took place. In general, cows on pasture were less susceptible to DD than cows in other housing systems, whereas the association between DD and the flooring conditions was counterintuitive. Heritability estimate for DD was 0.011 on the 0/1 scale, which is equivalent to 0.029 on the assumed underlying normally distributed scale. Bone quality, LOCO, and L&F had moderate to high negative genetic correlations with DD, indicating that flatter, more refined bones, higher LOCO, and better L&F were associated with less incidence of DD. The genetic correlations between DD, RLS, and FA were not significantly different from zero. Digital dermatitis had moderate but negative genetic correlations with LS and milk and fat, suggesting that breeding for resistance to DD will result in an increase in both longevity and production. Cows affected with DD had a slightly shorter calving interval than healthy cows, an association found to be mediated through the reduced milk yield of these cows. Generally, the type traits included in this study had low genetic correlations with production and fertility traits whereas the associations between these traits and LS ranged from moderate to high. This indicates that good locomotion, straighter RLS, steeper FA, better L&F, and flatter, more refined bones are associated with increased longevity.  相似文献

Samples of herd milk (506) were analyzed to assess sources of variation for milk coagulation properties (MCP) for 5 different dairy cattle breeds. Data were recorded in 55 single-breed dairy herds in the Trento province, a mountain area in northeast Italy. The 5 cattle breeds were Holstein-Friesian (8 herds), Brown Swiss (16 herds), Simmental (10 herds), Rendena (13 herds), and Alpine Gray (8 herds). Herd milk samples were analyzed for the MCP traits, milk rennet coagulation time (RCT), curd-firming time, and curd firmness (a30), as well as protein and fat percentages, somatic cell count, Soxhlet-Henkel acidity, and bacterial count. An ANOVA was performed to study the effect of breed, herd within breed, DIM, month of lactation, protein and fat percentages, somatic cell score, titratable acidity, and log bacterial count within breed on MCP. Breed was the most important source of variation. In particular, the Rendena breed showed the best MCP traits at 13.5 min and 27.0 mm for RCT and a30, respectively. The Holstein-Friesian breed had the worst coagulation properties at 18.0 min and 17.5 mm for RCT and a30, respectively. The other 3 breeds showed intermediate coagulation properties. The RCT values were better at the beginning of lactation, whereas RCT and a30 values were better in September and October (14.3 min and 25.7 mm, respectively). Among the composition traits, only the titratable acidity affected MCP traits of herd milk positively.  相似文献

Currently, breeding values for dairy goats in the United Kingdom are not estimated and selection is based only on phenotypes. Several studies from other countries have applied various methodologies to estimate breeding values for milk yield in dairy goats. However, most of the previous analyses were based on relatively small data sets, which might have affected the accuracy of the parameter estimates. The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for milk yield in crossbred dairy goats in lactations 1 to 4. The research was based on data provided by 2 commercial goat farms in the United Kingdom comprising 390,482 milk yield records on 13,591 dairy goats kidding between 1987 and 2012. The population was created by crossing 3 breeds: Alpine, Saanen, and Toggenburg. In each generation, the best-performing animals were selected for breeding and, as a result, a synthetic breed was created. The pedigree file contained 28,184 individuals, of which 2,414 were founders. The data set contained test-day records of milk yield, lactation number, farm, age at kidding, and year and season of kidding. Data on milk composition was unavailable. Covariance components were estimated with the average information REML algorithm in the ASReml package (VSN International Ltd., Hemel Hempstead, UK). A random regression animal model for milk yield with fixed effects of herd test day, year-season, and age at kidding was used. Heritability was the highest at 200 and 250 d in milk (DIM), reaching 0.45 in the first lactation and between 0.34 and 0.25 in subsequent lactations. After 300 DIM, the heritability started decreasing to 0.23 and 0.10 at 400 DIM in the first and subsequent lactations, respectively. Genetic correlation between milk yield in the first and subsequent lactations was between 0.16 and 0.88. This study found that milk yields in first and subsequent lactations are highly correlated, both at the genetic and phenotypic level. Estimates of heritability for milk yield were higher than most of the values reported in the literature, although they were in the range reported in this species. This should facilitate genetic improvement for the population studied as part of a broader multi-trait breeding program.  相似文献

Dairy products offer an important source of iodine for humans, particularly infants and children. An adequate iodine content in the diet of lactating animals must guarantee a suitable milk iodine concentration. In this experiment, the effects of iodine supplementation of dairy goat diets on the iodine concentration, milk yield, and milk composition of goat milk were studied. Thirty crossbred dairy goats of the Sarda population were divided into 3 groups supplemented with 0 (control group), 0.45 (group 1), or 0.90 (group 2) mg of KI/d per goat. The dose of KI (76.5% of iodine) was dissolved in water and orally administered with a syringe every day for 10 wk. Mean milk iodine concentrations were 60.1 ± 50.5, 78.8 ± 55.4, and 130.2 ± 62.0 μg/L (mean ± SD) in the control group, group 1, and group 2, respectively. The extent of iodine enrichment in milk was approximately 31% in group 1 and 117% in group 2 compared with the control group. Milk yield was not influenced by KI supplementation and averaged 1,229, 1,227, and 1,179 g/d in groups 0, 1, and 2, respectively. Milk urea nitrogen concentration was significantly lower in the KI-supplemented groups (32 and 33 mg/dL in groups 1 and 2, respectively) than in the control group (37 mg/dL). Iodine supplementation of dairy goat diets can increase milk iodine content without adverse effects on milk production traits.  相似文献
