John Keats——The Nightingale of His Own Life

"Ode to the Nightingale" is one of the masterpieces of John Keats. The great poem has described on hearing of the beautiful songs of nightingale, the melody inspires the poet's internal expectation of freedom and getting rid of all of the miseries and sadness of life. It can be felt in the poem that emotional changes of the poets and his greatness of his soul in the conflict between the beautiful world with the nightingale and the real world. He is the nightingale of his own life.

Commemorating and celebrating Raymond Unwin (1863–1940)

The 150th anniversary of Raymond Unwin's birth in 1863 provided an opportunity for reviewing his contributions to town planning and housing in their international context. His socialist values derived from John Ruskin, William Morris and Edward Carpenter provided the basis for democratizing design, aided by the visualization of his ideals provided initially by Barry Parker, his partner in architectural practice from 1896 to 1914. Evolution of housing design themes and space standards enabled demonstration of their efficacy in the context of his master plans for Garden City communities. The influence spread through his tract, ‘Nothing Gained by Overcrowding’, and the 1919 Housing Act, which required Garden City standards for public housing, administered by Unwin in the Ministry of Health. During the 1920s, he initiated a transatlantic dialogue with planners and housing officials in the USA, where he died in 1940.

Design methodology for a school prototype: Jean Prouvé’s Jules Ferry School Group in Dieulouard,France, 1952–1953

The catastrophic destruction of buildings in France during World War II demanded that reconstruction become one of the primary objectives in the immediate post-war period. This favoured a culture of experimentation, and created a context for Jean Prouvé to develop designs for school buildings. He developed these designs with a research-based process focusing on technical solutions and their prototypes, and with models whose fundamental premises were rapid and easy assembly-disassembly, lightness and economy. The constant correlation between the projected object and the object created in the workshop shaped the basis for the precision of his designs. This article analyses the methodology followed by Prouvé in the Jules Ferry School Group in Dieulouard, France (1952–1953), in the singular context of the post-war period, illustrating the route followed in developing the model rather than the aesthetics of the building. The prototype used in his schools, and the models generated from this system, demonstrate his architectural methods.
