Research shows that community socioeconomic status (SES) predicts, based on food service types available, whether a population has access to healthy food. It is not known, however, if a relationship exists between SES and risk for foodborne illness (FBI) at the community level. Geographic information systems (GIS) give researchers the ability to pinpoint health indicators to specific geographic locations and detect resulting environmental gradients. It has been used extensively to characterize the food environment, with respect to access to healthy foods. This research investigated the utility of GIS in determining whether community SES and/or demographics relate to access to safe food, as measured by food service critical health code violations (CHV) as a proxy for risk for FBI. Health inspection records documenting CHV for 10,859 food service facilities collected between 2005 and 2008 in Philadelphia, PA, were accessed. Using an overlay analysis through GIS, CHV were plotted over census tracts of the corresponding area. Census tracts (n = 368) were categorized into quintiles, based on poverty level. Overall, food service facilities in higher poverty areas had a greater number of facilities (with at least one CHV) and had more frequent inspections than facilities in lower poverty areas. The facilities in lower poverty areas, however, had a higher average number of CHV per inspection. Analysis of CHV rates in census tracts with high concentrations of minority populations found Hispanic facilities had more CHV than other demographics, and Hispanic and African American facilities had fewer days between inspections. This research demonstrates the potential for utilization of GIS mapping for tracking risks for FBI. Conversely, it sheds light on the subjective nature of health inspections, and indicates that underlying factors might be affecting inspection frequency and identification of CHV, such that CHV might not be a true proxy for risk for FBI.  相似文献

The influence of blade tenderization (T), vacuum massage time (2, 3 hr) and salt level (SL) (1.0, 1.25%) on the chemical, textural, and sensory characteristics of precooked chuck roasts prepared from Triceps brachii (TRI) and Supraspinatus (SUP) muscles was investigated. Cooking losses decreased and total yields increased with higher SL, while T increased product fat content. T decreased Warner-Bratzler shear values for the bind site (junction between the two muscles) and the edge of the roast. Instron values for hardness and chewiness of the muscle tissue were decreased by blade tenderization. Sensory panel evaluation showed that TRI had a more intense beef flavor and was more tender than SUP, while T improved first impression tenderness.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To use geographic information systems data and analyses to describe locations and characteristics of tobacco billboards in a large metropolitan area, and to assess the extent to which tobacco companies are locating billboards in close proximity to minority neighbourhoods and schools. DESIGN: Observational study of billboards in a large metropolitan region. SETTING: City and county of St Louis, Missouri. PARTICIPANTS: All stationary billboards in the city and county of St Louis were eligible to be observed, with the exception of bus stop and street side retail advertising signs (for example, cigarette advertising at gas stations). A total of 1239 non-blank billboards were observed. All data were collected in early 1998. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Tobacco and non-tobacco billboard geographic distribution; billboard type and product brand frequencies; and billboard neighbourhood characteristics. RESULTS: Almost 20% of the billboards contained tobacco advertising. Four of the top five and nine of the top 22 brands displayed on billboards were tobacco products. Billboards were located in all areas of St Louis except for the communities with the highest average incomes. Tobacco billboards were more likely to be found in low income areas and areas with a higher percentage of African Americans. Images of African American figures on tobacco billboards were concentrated in the most heavily African American populated regions of the city. Approximately 74% of all billboards in the city of St Louis were within 2000 feet (700 metres) of public school property. CONCLUSIONS: Tobacco products were the single most heavily advertised type of product on billboards in St Louis. The geographic distribution of tobacco billboards, as well as the types of images found on these billboards, is consistent with the hypothesis that tobacco companies are targeting poor and minority communities with their advertising. Methods employing geographic information systems are a powerful technique for examining outdoor tobacco advertising.  相似文献

Postharvest grain storage are a major problem in Mexico, influencing the economy, livelihoods, and food security of most farmers. At present, very limited information is available on postharvest maize losses and the associated insect pests in Mexico. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify and map maize storage losses in Central Mexico (State of Mexico) to analyze the effects of major pests in the different regions and to provide useful data to policymakers and local stakeholders. The study was conducted with 120 farmers dispersed across all regions of maize production in the State of Mexico. Storage losses were quantified using standardized maize samples that harvest, stored for a year, and sampled periodically. These data, together with geographic coordinates, were integrated into a geographic information system (GIS) to generate maps of maize storage damage and weight losses. The resulting maps show that in the southern region of the State of Mexico the standardized samples exhibited the highest maize losses after a one-year storage period, with an average of 76% loss and 100% grain damage, followed by the northern region, with an average of 18% loss and 52% damage. The eastern region reported 10% loss and 16% damage, whereas the Central region showed 5% loss and 14% damage. The main storage pests identified displayed localized geographic distributions, with the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, being mainly localized in the South, the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatu, in the East and North, and the angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella, in the Northeast and Central regions. Thus, these maps are robust tools that will help towards improving storage facilities and increasing food security for small-scale farmers.  相似文献

A number of countries are considering implementation of reporting requirements for greenhouse gases. Some reporting systems have been proposed that would require each entity or facility exceeding an annual emissions threshold to report their emissions to a governmental agency. The analysis presented here provides a first approximation of the number of facilities in selected U.S. economic sectors that would report under several different reporting thresholds. Results indicate that thresholds below 10,000 Mg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2E) per year may bring in relatively large numbers of facilities while minimally increasing the percentage of reported emissions. None of the reporting thresholds considered in this analysis would account for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions from the U.S. agricultural, transportation, or residential and commercial building sectors. If these sectors, in which large numbers of farms, vehicles, and buildings each emit relatively small amounts of greenhouse gases, are to be included in a reporting framework, additional or alternative approaches to reporting should be considered. Alternative approaches may include creating separate thresholds for individual greenhouse gases instead of using an aggregated CO2E unit, creating separate reporting thresholds for individual sectors, or combining sources of small emissions into a single reporting entity.  相似文献

Cocoa powder and chocolate products are known to sometimes contain cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) from environmental origins. A convenience sample of cocoa powder, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and cocoa nib products was purchased at retail in the US and analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to assess Cd and Pb concentrations. Cd and Pb were evaluated in relation to the percent cocoa solids and to the reported origin of the cocoa powder and chocolate products. Cd ranged from 0.004 to 3.15 mg/kg and Pb ranged from <LOD to 0.38 mg/kg. Cd and Pb were significantly correlated with percent cocoa, with correlations varying by product type and geographic origin. Geographic variation was observed for Cd, with higher Cd concentrations found in products reported as originating from Latin America than from Africa. The influence of percent cocoa solids and cocoa origin on Cd levels are relevant to international standards for Cd in chocolate products.  相似文献

In this study an inventory system was designed which fulfills the reporting requirements of the current European Union legislation for air emissions. Given the reporting requirements deriving from the EU Directives, International Conventions, and Inventory Methodologies developed at the EU level, there are significant differences in the required data in terms of industrial categories, definitions of point and area sources, whether TVOC or individual species must be determined, and expression of VOCs emissions. On the basis of this concept, an inventory system was structured that aims to comply with the framework set by the European Union for the evaluation of VOCs emissions from industrial activities and other facilities in Greece. This inventory can be very helpful to all the EU members states, as well as the Eastern European countries that are in pre-accession phase, who must implement the European legislation concerning VOCs emissions.  相似文献

In the past decade, substantial changes have occurred in the way dairy heifer calves are managed. The objectives of this study, part of phase I of the 2015 Canadian National Dairy Study, were to examine heifer calf health and adoption of rearing practices, and to explore factors associated with different rearing strategies on Canadian dairy farms. The questionnaire was open to all licensed dairy producers in Canada and had a 12% response rate (n = 1,373). Fifty-one percent of respondents reported never allowing heifer calves to nurse their dam, and 17% always removed calves within 30 min of birth. Sixty-seven percent reported always feeding heifer calves 4 L of colostrum within 12 h of birth; 17% always fed colostrum between 2100 and 0400 h; 5% pasteurized all colostrum fed on farm. Seventy-seven percent of respondents reported calving and stillbirth information for 2014; the mean reported stillbirth rate was 4.9% (SD = 3.3). Forty percent housed calves in individual pens, 34% in group pens, 21% in individual hutches, 2% reported tethering calves, and 1% used group hutches. Of those who housed calves in groups, 59% reported a maximum group size of 3 to 10 calves, 31% reported a pair (2) of calves per pen or hutch, and 10% reported a group >10 calves. The maximum amount of milk offered to calves per day during the preweaned period was a mean of 8 L (SD = 3). Fifty percent of respondents reported mortality data for 2014; mean preweaning mortality was 6.4% (SD = 8.3), and postweaning mortality was 2.4% (SD = 4.4). Over 95% of producers reported disbudding practices; 86% used cautery, 11% used surgical amputation, and 9% used caustic paste. Twenty-eight percent reported disbudding at less than 3 wk of age, 60% at 3 to 8 wk, and 22% at 8 to 16 wk; 5% of respondents reported dehorning at more than 16 wk of age. Sixty-six percent of cautery users reported use of local anesthetic, 33% used sedation, and 25% used a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Multivariable regression models showed that the use of local anesthetic when disbudding calves was associated with social media activity (odds ratio = 2.3) and high-speed internet access (odds ratio = 2.0), whereas sedation was associated with geographic region, and NSAID use was associated with disbudding at more than 3 wk of age. Exploring heifer rearing management practices, including adoption of best practices, may help focus future education and extension efforts. Poor reporting of mortality data may reflect a lack of recordkeeping on farm.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine differences in nutrient and energy intakes and in quantity of food eaten, and to compare the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of users of reduced-sugars foods and beverages with those who use only the full sugar versions of the same products. Records for adults (≥ 20 y old) responding to the 1994–1996 Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) and the Diet Health and Knowledge Survey were used. CSFII food lists were scanned for both full and reduced-sugar versions of yogurt, cocoa, and other milk beverages, frozen and gelatin desserts, puddings, breads, cookies, cakes, fruit drinks, carbonated and noncarbonated drinks, confectionary products, and sweeteners. Recalls were sorted for those reporting use of only full sugar (FS) products and those reporting mixed use of full sugar and reduced-sugar (RS) versions. Comparisons were made between demographic characteristics, body mass index, food group servings, food intake amounts, and nutrient densities. When compared with FS users, RS users consistently reported significantly higher intakes of fruit, lower intakes of discretionary fat and added sugars, and equal or lower intakes of other foods (in gram amounts), except for greater intake of yogurt and frozen and gelatin desserts. RS users tended to report similar or higher micronutrient intakes compared with FS users. After adjusting for energy intake, significantly higher micronutrient intakes were found for both males and females consuming RS foods and beverages (13 and 15 of 17 nutrients, respectively).  相似文献

Objective: To assess differences in demographic and smoking characteristics between smokers who have and have not used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Design: Mail survey of US smokers from a national research panel. Participants: Smokers 18 years and over who returned a survey on smoking (n = 9630). The sample was weighted to match the US smoker population on age and sex. Main outcome measures: Compared smokers who had/had not used NRT in a quit attempt (ever NRT use or over the counter (OTC) NRT use) on: demographic characteristics, nicotine dependence, history of craving and withdrawal, expected difficulty quitting, and self reported history of smoking related medical illness and psychopathology. Results: NRT users (both ever-users and OTC users) were more likely to be older, male, and better educated. They were also heavier smokers, had experienced more craving and withdrawal upon quitting, and scored higher on measures of dependence. These differences were evident among light smokers, and remained even when smoking rate and time to first cigarette were controlled. Conclusion: Smokers who elect to use NRT differ from non-NRT users in ways that predispose them to failure in cessation. Controlling for smoking rate and time to first cigarette does not eliminate these differences, even among light smokers. These differences must be considered when comparing the effectiveness of NRT among samples of smokers who self select their treatment and are likely to bias such outcome comparisons.  相似文献

The objective of the work was to test a web-based tool in the collection and presentation of data for our regular sunscreen surveys and to develop, test and conduct a web-based survey of sunscreen products, with instant data reporting. After the Photobiology Laboratory at MEDUNSA was approached by SurveyIT to pilot a new web-based data collection and reporting tool, companies were contacted via e-mail and invited to visit a secure web-based site to complete the provided questionnaire. Data collection and processing were greatly simplified by the new approach. The survey gleaned responses from 18 companies on 31 brands with a total of 110 primary sunscreen products. The data revealed a reduction in the number of companies marketing sunscreens in South Africa compared with the previous year, despite an increase in the volume of sunscreen sales. Ninety-eight percent of the products were claimed to be in vivo SPF tested. Fifty-seven percent of the products had undergone in vitro SPF testing for determination of their UVA protection. Fifty-one percent of the products were claimed to be water-resistant. Octyl methoxycinnamate was the most popular UV filter (88% of products), followed by benzophenone-3 (60%). Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane was in 52% of the products and surprisingly only 29% of the products contained titanium dioxide. The major conclusions are that the data collection tool was a success and that sunscreens are becoming more widely used and more thoroughly tested in South Africa.  相似文献

Members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (Fg complex) cause Gibberella ear rot in maize from northwest Argentina. The potential of these pathogens to contaminate maize grains with type B trichothecenes is a health risk for both humans and animals. We evaluated the reliability of multiplex PCR assays based on TRI3 and TRI12 genes, and single PCR assays based on TRI7 and TRI13 genes to infer trichothecene chemotypes of 112 strains of Fg complex collected from northwest Argentina, checking trichothecene production by chemical analysis. Single and multiplex PCR assays indicated that strains belonging to F. meridionale (87/112) had a NIV genotype. The remainder strains (25/112), which belonged to F. boothii, had a DON genotype (based on single PCR assays) or 15ADON genotype (based on multiplex PCR assays). No strains tested were incorrectly diagnosed with a DON/NIV genotype. Chemical analysis indicated that the F. meridionale strains were NIV producers only (44/87), major NIV producers with unexpected high DON/NIV ratios (36/87), or unexpected major DON producers with minor NIV production (7/87). Strains with atypical DON/NIV production seem to be new phenotypes under a putative NIV genotype, since PCR assays do not provide evidences of a new trichothecene genotype. DON production and absence of its acetylated forms were shown for strains of F. boothii. The inconsistencies between genetic and chemical data highlight the risk of inferring the trichothecenes potentially contaminating food and feedstuffs based only on PCR assays. This study confirms for the first time that strains of Fg complex from maize of northwest Argentina are DON and NIV producers. In addition, dominance of NIV producers in the Fg complex population isolated from maize is unprecedented in Argentina, and of significant concern to food safety and animal production.  相似文献

The anthocyanin and anthocyanidin pigment profiles of 46 authentic red raspberry juice samples were determined by HPLC. Total anthocyanin pigment content and percent polymeric color were also determined. This generated a database incorporating influences of cultivar, geographic origin, maturity, processing, and mold contamination. Cultivars exhibited characteristic patterns distinguished by quantitative rather than qualitative differences. Total pigment ranged from 4 to 1,102 mg/L. Commercial red raspberry juice concentrates (14) were also analyzed. Two were shown to be adulterated because of the presence of delphinidin glycosides. Three samples contained high amounts of polymerized pigments, indicating a history of processing or storage abuse.  相似文献

Evidence-based profiling of obesity and overweight in Indigenous Australian children has been poor. This study systematically reviewed evidence of the prevalence and patterns of obesity/overweight, with respect to gender, age, remoteness, and birth weight, in Indigenous Australian children, 0–18 years (PROSPERO CRD42014007626). Study quality and risk of bias were assessed. Twenty-five publications (21 studies) met inclusion criteria, with large variations in prevalence for obesity or overweight (11 to 54%) reported. A high degree of heterogeneity in study design was observed, few studies (6/21) were representative of the target population, and few appropriately recruited Indigenous children (8/21). Variability in study design, conduct, and small sample sizes mean that it is not possible to derive a single estimate for prevalence although two high-quality studies indicate at least one in four Indigenous Australian children are overweight or obese. Four of six studies reporting on gender, found overweight/obesity higher in girls and eight studies reporting on overweight/obesity by age suggest prevalence increases with age with one high quality large national study reporting total overweight/obesity as 22.4% of children aged 2–4 years, 27.5% of those aged 5–9, 38.5% aged 10–14, and 36.3% aged 15–17. Three of four studies, reporting obesity/overweight by region, found lower rates for children living in more remote areas than urban areas.  相似文献

This paper presents a seasonal transportation of raw milk (SToRM) model. Irish raw milk collection is estimated to annually cost in excess of €80 million. Employing a capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP) methodology and incorporating geographic information system (GIS) data, SToRM simulates a two‐day collection schedule using the Irish road network. Differences of over 60% in total route distance required between January (trough) and May (peak) were observed. However, varied seasonal patterns did not dramatically affect overall transport needs. Results highlight the need for dynamic scheduling. SToRM provides practitioners access to a powerful model for use in milk collection scheduling.  相似文献

Three to 16 animals were necessary to detect a difference of 50-20% in total collagen contents in Longissimus thoracis muscle, between two experimental groups of cattle, using the facilities available in our laboratory. The inter-assay variability was higher for insoluble collagen content than for total collagen content. Consequently differences between two groups are determined less accurately for insoluble collagen content than for total collagen content. This may be partly compensated by repeated measurements (minimum 4) to detect a difference of 40% or even higher. The low reproducibility of type I and type III collagen contents determined by electrophoretic analysis is due to uncontrollable technical parameters. Normalisation of the results is thus necessary for accurate quantification. The recommended procedure is to use total protein content detected and quantified on the gels as a covariable in the statistical model. This procedure induces a 15% reduction in intra-subject variability, and hence in sample size required to detect significant differences.  相似文献

Because of concerns about Vibrio vulnificus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering requirements for postharvest processing (PHP) of oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico during warm‐weather months and intended for raw consumption. As described in the paper, feasible PHP methods for warm‐weather‐harvested oysters include cool pasteurization, high hydrostatic pressure, and low‐dose gamma‐irradiation. We estimate that the costs of applying PHP are approximately 5 to 6 cents per half‐shell oyster intended for raw consumption. However, most oyster processors have insufficient volumes to cost‐effectively install PHP equipment. To assist these smaller operations, central PHP facilities operated by a 3rd party would be needed. A geographic information system analysis that minimized volume‐weighted travel distances from each Gulf oyster operation identified 6 optimal PHP facility locations in the Gulf region. Even with the establishment of central PHP facilities, some oyster operations will become unprofitable and be at risk for closure.  相似文献

One hundred eighty-one small-scale cheese factories (annual production < 100,000 kg) were tested for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in cheese and smear samples from 1997 to 2000. In total, 2615 samples were drawn. Fifty (27.6%) of 181 enterprises yielded L. monocytogenes. From 14 of the cheese-making facilities, we obtained more than four L. monocytogenes isolates. A total of 182 mostly cheese- and smear-borne L. monocytogenes strains were characterized by serotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. In 12 of 14 cheese factories, over half of the L. monocytogenes isolates were genetically indistinguishable by pulsetype. On average, genetically indistinguishable isolates were recovered for 11.9 months. Regarding serotypes, 27.3% of the isolates were of serovar 4b. Inadequate personal hygiene could explain the high prevalence of serovar 4b isolates in small-scale cheesemaking facilities. Forty-two percent of the serovar 4b isolates recovered from epidemiologically unlinked facilities (in comparison to 40 and 29% of the 1/2a and 1/2b isolates, respectively) were genetically indistinguishable from at least one other isolate. Indistinguishable serovar 1/2a and 1/2b isolates belonged to five and six different pulsetypes, respectively, whereas serovar 4b isolates belonged to only two pulsetypes. This finding suggested a wide distribution of genetically homologous serovar 4b isolates among the facilities tested in our study.  相似文献
