A novel mode scrambler for multimode optical waveguides is proposed to stabilise branching characteristics against the mode excitation conditio. A 2 × 2 optical star coupler is fabricated using this mode scrambler, and a stable branching ratio is realised with an excess insertion loss of 2.7 dB.  相似文献

This paper describes a comparison of three types of 8×8 multimode star couplers made in polymeric multimode waveguides. The mode conversion behavior of planar dielectric branching waveguides is studied as a function of branching angle, propagation direction of modes, and thickness ratio of branches. The multimode coupled equation and new step approximation method of branch taper are introduced, which give the accurate analysis of mode behavior in the branching waveguide of a large taper angle.  相似文献

We propose a new method to design low-loss Y-branch waveguides. In conventional design methods, a specific geometry of branching structure is given first, and then structural parameters describing the details of the proposed geometry (for example, location, sizes, and refractive index of microprisms or phase-adjusting elements) are determined by ray optics or other means. In this paper, we take quite a different approach. Given a complex field distribution, one complex refractive index distribution that supports it is determined uniquely, according to the scalar Helmholtz equation. Using this relation, we first make up an ideal field distribution for dividing optical waves smoothly in the branching region. Next, we calculate the refractive index distribution corresponding to the ideal field. Finally, the imaginary part of the refractive index is set to be zero and its real part is discretized into three levels from the practical viewpoint. Numerical simulations show that the present design method offers extremely low-loss Y-branch waveguides  相似文献

Effective coupling between two remote optical waveguides without branching sections can be achieved in a three-guide system with multimode central waveguide. We investigate the nonlinear power switching of c.w. laser radiation by such radiatively coupled waveguides. It is shown that effective all-optical switches with spatially well separated input/output channels can be realized although the influence of multimode interference on the switching characteristics becomes more pronounced for increasing thickness of the central guide. Different coupling regimes are specified, and the changes in switching characteristics during the transformation from one regime to another is studied. Numerical calculations for the critical power are compared with an approximate analytical expression. It is also shown that, at a moderate input power, a small number of modes determines the switching behavior  相似文献

In this paper, we present a highly efficient one-dimensional cylindrical nonuniform finite-difference time-domain (1-D CNUFDTD) method, which utilizes the unsplit anisotropic perfectly matched layer (APML) for mesh truncation along the radial direction to analyze axisymmetric optical-fiber waveguides. As a first step, we validate the proposed FDTD algorithm by analyzing a uniform dielectric waveguide of circular cross section and show that the results are in excellent agreement with the conventional mode theory solutions. Next, we apply the algorithm to analyze propagation characteristics of a number of commonly used optical-fiber waveguides, i.e., step-index multimode, graded-index multimode, and single-mode step-index configurations  相似文献

Coupled mode theory is unnecessary for the analysis of pulse propagation in multimode optic waveguides. Instead, a very simple ray or continuum equation is derived from elementary plane-wave concepts to account for the effects of absorption loss and scattering. Two-dimensional (2-D) photonic crystal (PC) directional couplers (DCs) that have a triangular lattice pattern of air holes in a planar dielectric slab are theoretically and experimentally analyzed. Unlike the 2-D PC DC structure with a dielectric rod in air, which is frequently used in theoretical studies, more practical PC DCs tend to be multimode in nature and exhibit a large group velocity dispersion, thus creating decoupling points in the dispersion relation without any additional modifications to the structure. The multimode nature and large dispersion lead to interference which degrades the coupling properties. By inserting three rows of air holes between neighboring line-defect waveguides in order to separate them, we have successfully reduced the multimode region and obtained a single-mode region. In this case, the large dispersion allows the creation of a PC DC with wavelength selectivity and a coupling length as short as 30 a,/spl sim/10 /spl mu/m for a=345 nm, where a is the lattice constant. The transmission spectra obtained experimentally showed good agreement with the theory whereas their transmission ranges were restricted to those of bent waveguides. These results are encouraging for practical application to optical communications.  相似文献

We report a simple milled-groove process integrated with a two-step ion-diffused waveguide fabrication for efficient coupling between single-mode fibers and integrated optical waveguides andY- branches. We demonstrate such a coupling technique using a) a multimode transition to single-mode waveguide coupler, and b) an integrated optical 3-dB branching waveguide coupler from a single-mode fiber to silver/sodium ion-enchanged waveguide components. The coupling loss was about 1-2 dB over a propagation length of 2 cm at an operating wavelength of 633 nm.  相似文献

A ten-port planar star coupler has been developed, utilising multimode waveguides easily formed in a glass substrate by evaporated silver ion diffusion. The waveguides have circular cross-sections with graded-index profile, which matches well to graded-index multimode fibres. A hybrid (nonray, nonmodal) method for computing the fields of a paraxial beam propagating in a multimode waveguide (parallel-plate or dielectric slab) at large axial distances is presented. The method is based on the Fourier and Fresnel self-imaging properties of these waveguides, and is capable of high accuracy. Amorphous silicon waveguides were obtained by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition and anisotropic plasma etching. Rectangular multimode waveguides as well as singlemode ridge waveguides were fabricated. Scattered light measurements at 1550 nm (1300 nm) wavelength showed a low propagation loss of /spl les/0.5 dB/cm (1.6 dB/cm) for multimode waveguides and 2.0 dB/cm (5.0 dB/cm) for highly-confined singlemode waveguides.  相似文献

It is generally agreed that multimode graded index fiber has become the main fiber technology for optical communication applications. Multimode graded index fibers provide sufficient bandwidth for most applications without the critical tolerances of single mode fibers. In this paper, multimode fiber devices and components based on packaging miniaturized optical components for a GaAs laser array source package, and multichannel waveguides will be discussed. Experimental results, fabrication process and technology limitation for some of the multimode devices will be included. One major drawback of using multimode fibers is the difficulty to obtain simple and efficient switches and taps which are essential for data bus or other optical links. Some possible solutions for multimode fiber switches with miniaturized bulk wave devices will be presented.  相似文献

A polarization-insensitive dual-wavelength demultiplexer based on sandwiched multimode interference waveguides is presented. Polarization-insensitive multimode waveguides are achieved first by choosing a suitable refractive index of the SiN middle region. The demultiplxing function is then realized by adjusting the width and length of the multimode region. Simulation results obtained from three-dimensional beam-propagation method show that the demultiplexer can work at 1310- and 1550-nm bands for both polarizations simultaneously with a low insertion loss and a broad bandwidth.  相似文献

We introduce a new multimode interference structure that can be used as an integrated optical router. This structure is based on the existence of a first cross state in weakly guiding multimode waveguides. Such a cross image, not expected by the self-imaging technique, is tested by rigorous modal analysis as well as the nonmodal beam propagation method. We show that the quality of this image could be enhanced by strip loading the multimode section of the structure. Making use of this image, we propose a new optical router based on the large nonlinearity associated with the blockaded reservoir and quantum-well electron transfer structure  相似文献

Step approximation models provide a simple method of studying mode propagation and mode conversion in planar Y-branch optical waveguides. They are, however, only applicable to small branching angles since they neglect the wavefront tilt of the separating waveguides. A phasefront tilt approximation which can be used in conjunction with the local normal mode profile of the five-layer structure is introduced. By rotating the Y-branch about the branching point, a symmetrical branching angle is defined so that the phasefront approximation can be used not only for symmetrical Y-branches, but also for Y-branches which have an asymmetrical branching angle or have a change in branching angle along the longitudinal axis of the Y-branch  相似文献
