The purpose of this paper is to construct bandwidth-satisfied multicast trees for QoS applications in large-scale ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Recent routing protocols and multicast protocols in large-scale MANETs adopt two-tier infrastructures to avoid the inefficiency of the flooding. Hosts with a maximal number of neighbors are often chosen as backbone hosts (BHs) to forward packets. Most likely, these BHs will be traffic concentrations/bottlenecks of the network. In addition, since host mobility is not taken into consideration in BH selection, these two-tier schemes will suffer from more lost packets if highly mobile hosts are selected as BHs. In this paper, a new multicast protocol is proposed for partitioning large-scale MANET into two-tier infrastructures. In the proposed two-tier multicast protocol, hosts with fewer hops and longer remaining connection time to the other hosts will be selected as BHs. The objective is not only to obtain short and stable multicast routes, but also to construct a stable two-tier infrastructure with fewer lost packets. Further, previous MANET quality-of-service (QoS) routing/multicasting protocols determined bandwidth-satisfied routes for QoS applications. Some are implemented as a probing scheme, but the scheme is inefficient due to high overhead and slow response. On the contrary, the others are implemented by taking advantage of routing and link information to reduce the inefficiency. However, the latter scheme suffers from two bandwidth-violation problems. In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to avoid the two problems, and it is integrated with the proposed two-tier multicast protocol to construct bandwidth-satisfied multicast trees for QoS applications in large-scale MANETs. The proposed algorithm aims to achieve better network performance by minimizing the number of forwarders in a tree.  相似文献

Forward error correction (FEC) schemes have been proposed and used successfully for multicasting realtime video content to groups of users. Under traditional IP multicast, application-level FEC can only be implemented on an end-to-end basis between the sender and the clients. Emerging overlay and peer-to-peer (p2p) networks open the door for new paradigms of network FEC. The deployment of FEC within these emerging networks has received very little attention (if any). In this paper, we analyze and optimize the impact of network-embedded FEC (NEF) in overlay and p2p multimedia multicast networks. Under NEF, we place FEC codecs in selected intermediate nodes of a multicast tree. The NEF codecs detect and recover lost packets within FEC blocks at earlier stages before these blocks arrive at deeper intermediate nodes or at the final leaf nodes. This approach significantly reduces the probability of receiving undecodable FEC blocks. In essence, the proposed NEF codecs work as signal regenerators in a communication system and can reconstruct most of the lost data packets without requiring retransmission. We develop an optimization algorithm for the placement of NEF codecs within random multicast trees. Based on extensive H.264 video simulations, we show that this approach provides significant improvements in video quality, both visually and in terms of PSNR values.  相似文献

A wireless ad hoc network consists of mobile nodes that are powered by batteries. The limited battery lifetime imposes a severe constraint on the network performance, energy conservation in such a network thus is of paramount importance, and energy efficient operations are critical to prolong the lifetime of the network. All-to-all multicasting is one fundamental operation in wireless ad hoc networks, in this paper we focus on the design of energy efficient routing algorithms for this operation. Specifically, we consider the following minimum-energy all-to-all multicasting problem. Given an all-to-all multicast session consisting of a set of terminal nodes in a wireless ad hoc network, where the transmission power of each node is either fixed or adjustable, assume that each terminal node has a message to share with each other, the problem is to build a shared multicast tree spanning all terminal nodes such that the total energy consumption of realizing the all-to-all multicast session by the tree is minimized. We first show that this problem is NP-Complete. We then devise approximation algorithms with guaranteed approximation ratios. We also provide a distributed implementation of the proposed algorithm. We finally conduct experiments by simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms all the other known algorithms.  相似文献

Adaptive clustering is one of the fundamental problems behind autonomic systems and, more generally, an open research issue in the area of networking and distributed systems. The problem of giving structure to large-scale, dynamic systems through clustering and of electing centrally located nodes (cluster heads) is nontrivial. This is in fact an NP-complete problem when striving for optimality. We propose an innovative strategy based on code mobility that dynamically computes near-optimal clusters in linear time. Our approach is autonomic, does not require any user intervention, is self-configuring, self-optimal, and self-healing. We demonstrate these features through an extensive set of simulations, discussing the viability of the algorithm based on state-of-the art technologies, and elaborating on its applicability to distributed monitoring, peer-to-peer systems, application-level multicast, and content adaptation networks.  相似文献

An important problem in both wireless and wired communication networks is to be able to efficiently multicst information to a group of network sites. Multicasting reduces the transmission overhead of both wireless and wired networks and the time it takes for all the nodes in the subset to receive the information. Since transmission bandwidth is a scarce commodity especially in wireless networks, efficient and near minimum-cost multicast algorithms are particularly useful in the wireless context. In this paper, we discuss methods of establishing efficient and near minimum-cost multicast routing in communication networks. In particular, we discuss an efficient implementation of a widely used multicast routing method which can construct a multicast tree with a cost no greater than twice the cost of an optimal tree. We also present two efficient multicast tree constructions for a general version of the multicast routing problem in which a network consists of different classes of nodes, where each class can have one or more nodes of the same characteristic which is different from the characteristics of nodes from other classes. Because of their efficient running times, these multicast routing methods are particularly useful in the mobile communication environments where topology changes will imply recomputation of the multicast trees. Most existing algorithms for the problem of optical signal splitter placement or multicast splitting-capable node placement in a WDM network are based on the performance of attempting a large set of randomly generated multicast sessions in the network. Experiments show that placement of multicast capable nodes based on their importance for routing one set of multicast sessions may not be a right choice for another set of multicast sessions. In this work, we propose placement algorithms that are based on network topology and the relative importance of a node in routing multicast sessions, which is measured by our proposed metrics. Since a network topology is fixed once given, the proposed algorithms are essentially network traffic independent. We evaluate the proposed placement algorithms given static sets of multicast sessions as well as under dynamic traffic conditions, which are routed using our splitter constrained multicast routing algorithm. Our results show that the proposed algorithms perform better, compared to existing algorithms.  相似文献

This paper investigates the problem of protecting multicast sessions in mesh wavelength‐division multiplexing (WDM) networks against single link failures, for example, a fiber cut in optical networks. First, we study the two characteristics of multicast sessions in mesh WDM networks with sparse light splitter configuration. Traditionally, a multicast tree does not contain any circles, and the first characteristic is that a multicast tree has better performance if it contains some circles. Note that a multicast tree has several branches. If a path is added between the leave nodes on different branches, the segment between them on the multicast tree is protected. Based the two characteristics, the survivable multicast sessions routing problem is formulated into an Integer Linear Programming (ILP). Then, a heuristic algorithm, named the adaptive shared segment protection (ASSP) algorithm, is proposed for multicast sessions. The ASSP algorithm need not previously identify the segments for a multicast tree. The segments are determined during the algorithm process. Comparisons are made between the ASSP and two other reported schemes, link disjoint trees (LDT) and shared disjoint paths (SDP), in terms of blocking probability and resource cost on CERNET and USNET topologies. Simulations show that the ASSP algorithm has better performance than other existing schemes.  相似文献

Wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks using wavelength-routing are considered to be potential candidates for the next generation wide-area backbone networks. Multicasting is the ability to transmit information from a single source node to multiple destination nodes and is becoming an important requirement in high-speed networks. As WDM technology matures and multicast applications become increasingly popular, supporting multicast routing at the WDM layer becomes an important and yet a challenging topic. This paper concerns with the problem of optical multicast routing in WDM networks. A few nodes in the network may have wavelength conversion and/or splitting capabilities. In this paper, a new multicast tree construction algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is based on a concept called virtual source. A virtual source is a node having both the splitting and wavelength conversion capabilities. By exploiting the presence of virtual source nodes, the proposed algorithm achieves improved performance. To further improve the performance, the algorithm assigns priorities to nodes based on their capabilities. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified through extensive simulation experiments.  相似文献

The emergence of new services demands multicast function in optical network.Because of the high cost and complex architecture of multicast capable (MC) node, splitter-sharing switch structure is introduced in which the light splitters are shared by all input signals.To accommodate to this situation, by extending resource ReSerVation protocol-traffic engineering (RSVP-TE) and open shortest path first-traffic engineering (OSPF-TE), a new optical multicast mechanism is provided and the signaling flow and its finite state machine model are given.At the same time, a multicast routing algorithm in splitter-sharing optical network and a changing link weight policy to balance network traffic are proposed.Simulations in NSFNET show no matter with or without wavelength converters, when the number of splitters is 25% of that demanded by traditional MC nodes, the multicast performance has been close to the ideal circumstance.Wavelength converters and changing link weight help much in improving the traffic performance when the number of splitters is adequate.  相似文献

This article studies the problem of constructing optimal layered multicast with network coding for heterogeneous networks.Based on the flexibility of layered source coding, a global-favorable optimization scheme is proposed, which maximizes the aggregate throughput of heterogeneous sink nodes for layered multicast with network coding by determining the optimal bit rates of the layers. To solve this global-favorable optimization scheme, especially in the large-scale heterogeneous networks, a new problem-specific genetic algorithm (GA) is further proposed. It not only searches efficiently for the optimal allocation of layer bit rates, but also guarantees the validity of candidate solutions in the whole evolutionary process. Simulation results demonstrate that this new GA-based optimization scheme could obtain efficiently the optimal or satisfactorily near-optimal bit rates for layered multicast with network coding, even in the large-scale heterogeneous networks.  相似文献

Ad hoc networks are collections of mobile nodes communicating using wireless media without any fixed infrastructure. Existing multicast protocols fall short in a harsh ad hoc mobile environment, since node mobility causes conventional multicast trees to rapidly become outdated. The amount of bandwidth resource required for building up a multicast tree is less than that required for other delivery structures, since a tree avoids unnecessary duplication of data. However, a tree structure is more subject to disruption due to link/node failure and node mobility than more meshed structures. This paper explores these contrasting issues and proposes PPMA, a Probabilistic Predictive Multicast Algorithm for ad hoc networks, that leverages the tree delivery structure for multicasting, solving its drawbacks in terms of lack of robustness and reliability in highly mobile environments. PPMA overcomes the existing trade-off between the bandwidth efficiency to set up a multicast tree, and the tree robustness to node energy consumption and mobility, by decoupling tree efficiency from mobility robustness. By exploiting the non-deterministic nature of ad hoc networks, the proposed algorithm takes into account the estimated network state evolution in terms of node residual energy, link availability and node mobility forecast, in order to maximize the multicast tree lifetime, and consequently reduce the number of costly tree reconfigurations. The algorithm statistically tracks the relative movements among nodes to capture the dynamics in the ad hoc network. This way, PPMA estimates the node future relative positions in order to calculate a long-lasting multicast tree. To do so, it exploits the most stable links in the network, while minimizing the total network energy consumption. We propose PPMA in both its centralized and distributed version, providing performance evaluation through extensive simulation experiments.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel dynamic core-based selection (DCS) algorithm for the multicast restoration in WDM mesh networks. The core-based fault tolerance scheme provides a flexible way to control a number of core nodes with less control overheads for searching the routing path, wavelength assignment (RWA), and restoration paths when fault occurs in the one-to-many multicast domain. Compared with the source-based scheme, core-based schemes are easier to maintain, and specifically scalable in large-scale topologies. In the core-based fault tolerance scheme, k-tuple domination nodes are selected to form a minimum sized vertex subset such that each vertex in the graph is dominated by at least k vertices, where the k is defined as two in this paper. The proposed DCS algorithm is defined as each node in multicast tree session must be directly connected to at least one core node in multicast tree session and also has to be directly connected to at least one core node out of multicast tree session. The primary aim of this work is to provide the scalable and fast local survivability based on the information from core nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the Dual Tree and MRLR algorithms in terms of total hop counts needed for all recovery paths and blocking probability for different network topologies.  相似文献

A set of applications such as Internet video broadcasts, corporate telecasts, and distance learning require the simultaneous streaming of video to a large population of viewers across the Internet. The high bandwidth requirements and the multi-timescale burstiness of compressed video make it a challenging problem to provision network resources for streaming multimedia. For such applications to become affordable and ubiquitous, it is necessary to develop scalable techniques to efficiently stream video to a large number of disparate clients across a heterogeneous Internet. In this paper, we propose to multicast smoothed video over an application-level overlay network of proxies, and to differentially cache the video at the intermediate nodes (proxies) in the distribution tree, in order to reduce the network bandwidth requirements of video dissemination. We formulate the multicast smoothing problem as an optimization problem, and develop an algorithm for computing the set of transmission schedules for the tree that minimize the peak rate and rate variability, given buffer constraints at different nodes in the tree. We also develop an algorithm to compute the minimum buffer allocation in the entire tree, such that feasible transmission to all the clients is possible, when the tree has heterogeneous rate constraints. We show through trace-driven simulations that substantial benefits are possible from multicast smoothing and differential caching, and that these gains can be realized even with modest proxy caches.  相似文献

The issue of wavelength assignment is one of the most important factors that affect the capacity for the deployment of optical networks. This issue becomes more critical for multicast connections, especially when the network nodes have no wavelength conversion capability. Although the wavelength assignment can be more flexible if each node can perform wavelength conversion, the deployment cost increases accordingly. A compromise is to support a limited portion of conversion nodes in the WDM network. We propose a systematic approach for the wavelength assignment of multicast connections in WDM networks with sparse wavelength conversion nodes. The efficiency of the arrangement of wavelength is measured by its influences on the available capacity of the network and the consumption of wavelengths. By using the proposed approach, the Static Cost Greedy (SCG) algorithm [8] can be easily extended to be applicable in a Sparse Wavelength Conversion Network (SWCN). In addition, instead of SCG, the Minimum-Effect-First (MEF) algorithm is proposed to maximize the network capacity during wavelength assignment. We compare the performance of the proposed MEF methods with the extended SCG scheme through exhaustive simulations. The experimental results indicate that the proposed MEF schemes demonstrate much better performance than the SCG scheme. We also found that the performance is not always improved proportionally to the increment of the wavelength conversion nodes. The improvement reaches saturation when the number of conversion nodes is above 35% of the total number of nodes.
