Are you one of the growing army of unemployed? Or are you afraid you might be soon? If so, you are one of millions in today's business world whose emotional structure has either collapsed or is in danger of collapsing. Your ability to cope, to function optimally, and to enjoy your life may, indeed, be in danger in the current business scene. In times like these, it is normal to feel a great sense of loss. As a result, you may even feel depressed. In order to pull yourself out of the doldrums and get on with your life, you'll need to find a way to regain some measure of stability so that you can replenish your confidence in yourself. This is a vital step that must be taken before you go out to find another job... the right job. If you don't pull yourself together, you will jeopardize the very result you want so badly: to get back into the workforce and reestablish your identity as a responsible, earning, worthwhile individual. The author briefly outlines a concept from her book 'Dealing effectively with job loss' on rebuilding the emotional and physical structure of your life.

Librarians, like most professionals, may arrive at a stage in their careers when they start questioning themselves about their job satisfaction and importance. The reasons are many, from not being challenged by their work to abrupt changes in the workplace dictated by management and the economy. At this stage, professionals may begin to feel unappreciated by management and not in control of their work environment. In this piece, I offer some suggestions that could help mid-career librarians to re-energize themselves and survive in a workplace that is in constant flux. How you react to the anxiety of "job disconnect" will affect the rest of your career life. Should you become more proactive at your job, increasing your responsibility and value to your institution? What does your personality have to do with how you adjust to management changes? Does tenure fit into this equation? Should you even think about changing your job at this stage of your career? What other factors could "spice" up your career? Specific strategies and options for each of these questions will be discussed.

This paper provides some tips to help guide you in making a midcareer jump: 1) take initiative - tackle any available projects at your company related to the areas you're interested in moving, 2) know thyself - know what kind of personality do you have, and 3) have a plan B - develop a backup plan so that if you don't like your career move, you can make another transition. The idea is to have a goal but to have an open mind about the variety of settings that can accommodate your skills and personality.

The process of getting a US patent goes something like this: you work with your patent lawyer or agent to prepare an application that describes your invention in exhaustive detail; the Patent Office rejects all of your claims in curt, dismissive terms; your counsel says not to panic and, in most cases, persuades the patent examiner to allow at least some claims; and, finally, two or more years after you first filed, agony gives way to ecstasy and the beribboned patent deed issues forth. But legal traps along the way may deprive the unwary of some or even all patent riots. Worse, you may not learn of a mistake until years later, after the patent has issued, when some alert lawyer asks a few innocent-sounding questions about a conference paper you gave and, shortly after, asks the court to invalidate your patent. The author describes how the most common mistakes fall into three categories: those that threaten US rights, those affecting foreign rights, and the effects of patent filings on trade secrets.

Making a success of a consultancy means finding a niche where you can offer clients an edge over competing consultants. You cannot be all things to all people. If, for instance, you want to function as a customer's representative reviewing process designs, project economics and schedules, be sure to portray yourself as such. If you want to specialize in particular unit operations, you should emphasize that forte. Among other choices, you may intend to make your name as an expert witness, or as an economic and market analyst, an adviser on educational curricula, a counselor to government or nongovernmental organizations, or to equipment vendors or technology licensors; whatever the choice, be sure to advertise yourself specifically as such. In any case, be objective and never stretch the facts as to your capabilities. Later in this article, we give recommendations on how to market your services.

Most of us have attended a lecture or a meeting in which a whiteboard was an integral part of the learning and communication process. Whether you are an educator explaining some finer point of a lesson or you are simply conveying an idea to a colleague, whiteboards provide a way to augment the fidelity of your communication. This is particularly true when text alone will not do the trick. Wouldn't it be great if the common dry-erase whiteboard could digitally store all your handwritten text and sketches? How about if you could engage in the same free-style, creative, problem-solving discourse with other participants who are not in the same room with you? What if you could review the notes written on a whiteboard from a meeting that you could not attend?

The author talks on how a recently discovered flaw in the Internet's Domain Name System makes it easy for scammers to lure you to fake Web sites. It turns out to be easy for a malicious computer hacker to trick your browser into steering you anywhere he wants and then to pilfer sensitive information, like your user name, password, and credit card number.

You don?t need your own exercise equipment to get fit, so why do you need your own machine tools to build something cool? Such thinking led Jim Newton to found the first TechShop, a high?tech workshop open to anyone who pays a modest membership fee. Think of it as a health club for geeks. Instead of treadmills and elliptical trainers, you?ll find laser and plasma cutters, milling machines and lathes, oscilloscopes and frequency generators. What?s more, you?ll run into like-minded folk who can give you tips on everything from tungsten inert-gas welding to computer-aided design, either through organized classes or informal coaching.

Chill Out
《Spectrum, IEEE》2009,46(10):34-39
Heat is one of the worst enemies of electronics. Sit on the sofa with your laptop and you quickly feel the heat on your lap. Often though, overheating can be hard to diagnose. You may notice random errors occurring no matter what program you're running. This is especially true if you use your computer to play advanced video games, which can really tax the microprocessor and the graphics card. If your machine frequently experiences fatal errors or "the blue screen of death" on such occasions, chances are it has thermal management problems. And overheating doesn't just degrade a computer's performance; it can also shorten its useful life.

Have you ever tried to measure the response time across a network? Do you sometimes wonder what throughput rate you're getting over a particular link? Are you concerned about the impact of adding streaming multimedia traffic to a network? Would you like to know the exact route your data is taking? Individual tools are available to measure the throughput and response time of your applications, trace a network route, or test a network's capacity for handling multimedia traffic. But a software tool called Qcheck can perform all of these tasks and more, while providing a quick check of network performance. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

One of the software programs we take for granted is antivirus software. Perhaps part of the reason for not being excited about protecting our computers resides in the fact that most PCs marketed over the past few years are bundled with an antivirus solution. When you initialize the computer you also start your virus protection program, which will often provide you with only a short period of protection before pop‐up messages appear reminding you to renew your antivirus program license to ensure your protection is up to date. What is more than likely never mentioned to consumers is the fact that the antivirus software bundled with your computer was positioned there due to the software vendor paying the computer manufacturer a fee. While most third‐party software placed on new computers must pass a certain level of quality assurance, the computer manufacturer is more interested in the placement fee than whether the software is the best for the purchaser of the computer. Thus, one of the things we should do when our antivirus software license expires, if not sooner, is to look at other possible solutions beyond the software bundled with the computer. One such antivirus product that warrants our attention and which is the focus of this column is ESET's NOD32 for Windows antivirus solution, which was originally developed in Slovakia.
