A quinine‐derived thiourea catalysed the enantioselective addition of 4‐substituted pyrazolones to isatin‐derived ketimines, providing a variety of aminooxindole‐pyrazolone adducts containing congested vicinal tetrasubstituted stereocentres with excellent outcomes (up to 98% yield, >20:1 dr and 98% ee).

We disclose the highly diastereoselective combination of monoamine oxidase‐catalyzed oxidation of meso‐pyrrolidines and aza‐Friedel–Crafts reactions in aqueous buffer to give valuable enantioenriched 2‐substituted pyrrolidines in a formal double C H activation process. A range of secondary as well as tertiary amines were shown to be suitable substrates for the biocatalytic oxidation and subsequent addition of a variety of C‐nucleophiles.

Silver‐catalyzed three‐component, tandem reactions of 4‐alkynyl‐2‐oxo‐2H‐chromene‐3‐carbaldehydes, amines and various nucleophiles result in the formation of highly functionalized chromeno[3,4‐c]pyridin‐5‐ones in high yields. Gold‐catalyzed [4+2] cycloadditions of 4‐alkynyl‐2‐oxo‐2H‐chromene‐3‐carbaldehydes with alkynes or alkenes have also been achieved to afford benzo[c]chromen‐6‐ones efficiently.

A practical and environmentally friendly strategy for generating alkoxycarbonyl radicals from readily available carbazates under metal‐free conditions has been developed. In the presence of tetrabutylammonium iodide and tert‐butyl hydroperoxide, 2‐isocyanobiphenyls smoothly underwent radical alkoxycarbonylation with carbazates to afford phenanthridine‐6‐carboxylates.

The selective copper‐catalyzed borylation of silylalkynes in the presence of a diboron reagent and methanol produced a variety of (Z)‐β‐(borylvinyl)silanes. The appropriate use of a selective ligand for copper allows the chemo‐, regio‐, and stereoselective monoborylation of silylalkynes. The β‐regioselectivity of an N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐copper catalyst was investigated by DFT calculations.

The asymmetric conjugate 1,4‐addition of arylboronic acids to α,β‐unsaturated carbonyl compounds is an extremely versatile and widely used organic transformation. While the rhodium(I)‐catalysed reaction has been thoroughly explored, the asymmetric palladium‐catalysed protocol is far less developed and understood, particularly with acyclic enones as substrates. Herein, we report the systematic evaluation of a series of metallacycles for this reaction and the conjugate addition of arylboronic acids to a wide range of α,β‐unsaturated enones, catalysed by an easily accessible and robust chiral phosphapalladacycle in high yields and enantioselectivities.

Zinc‐catalyzed 1,4‐oxofluorinations of 3‐en‐1‐ynamides with Selectfluor in acetonitrile/water proceeded with high regio‐ and stereoselectivity, giving E‐configured γ‐fluoro‐α,β‐unsaturated amides efficiently. Our control experiments indicate that kinetically unstable C‐bound zinc dienolates are chemically reactive to undergo SE2′‐electrophilic fluorinations whereas the detectable O‐bound dienolates preferably undergo protodemetalation reactions instead.

A highly efficient gold(I)‐catalyzed cascade reaction for the synthesis of fully substituted 3‐formyl‐4‐iodofurans has been developed. Mechanistic investigations indicate a reaction pathway that involves a direct iodination reaction of the organogold intermediate via functionalization of the Au C(sp2) bond, instead of a direct iodination of the 3‐formylfurans.

Meldrum’s acid has turned out to be a useful ketene equivalent when faced to nitrone dipoles to form various isoxazolidin‐5‐one derivatives under very mild Brønsted base organocatalytic conditions. The first asymmetric version of this original domino anionic formal [3+2] cycloaddition–decarboxylation reaction was demonstrated by means of quinine‐based organocatalysts.

The palladium‐catalyzed, one‐pot arylative cyclization of 3‐(γ,δ‐disubstituted)allylidene‐2‐oxindoles afforded spirodihydronaphthalene‐2‐oxindole frameworks via an oxidative Heck arylation (Fujiwara–Moritani reaction), an allylic palladium migration, and an aryl C H bond functionalization/arylation cascade of reactions. This is a first example of the palladium‐catalyzed oxidative arylation and an aryl C H bond functionalization/arylation cascade reaction which involves an electrophilic arylative quenching of a π‐allylpalladium intermediate and a regio‐controlled aryl C H bond activation assisted by a weak palladium‐arene interaction.

Densely functionalized polyether macrocycles can be prepared in one pot in yields up to 60% by the rhodium(II)‐catalyzed decomposition of methyl diazoacetoacetate in the presence of a variety of substituted or unsaturated 5‐ and 6‐membered ring cyclic ethers. A comprehensive analysis of the solid state conformations of the macrocyclic geometries is detailed as well as novel mechanistic insights about the multi‐component condensation reaction.

An enantioselective protonation by means of chiral scandium complex‐catalyzed aza‐Michael reaction was realized. A series of α‐aryl‐substituted vinyl ketones reacted with pyrazoles smoothly, affording the corresponding enantiomerically enriched pyrazole derivatives with excellent results (up to 99% yield, 94% ee). Water and hydrogen chloride were found to accelerate the protonation process.

A straightforward, tandem, copper‐catalyzed N‐arylation–condensation has been developed using chiral cyclic 1,2‐diamines and ortho‐haloaryl aldehydes or ketones. The corresponding chiral tricyclic 1,4‐benzodiazepines were synthesized in high yields. Subsequently, the 1,4‐diazepines have been converted to a new class of tetracyclic N‐fused imidazobenzodiazepines (ImBDs) using the van Leusen reaction. A one‐pot sequential strategy has also been demonstrated for the synthesis of ImBDs. The synthetic utility of 1,4‐benzodiazepines and ImBDs is described.

A gold(I)‐catalyzed cascade [3,3]‐propargylic rearrangement and [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of 2‐vinylindoles with propargylic esters is reported. The reaction leads to the synthesis of highly substituted tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives in high yields and diasteroselectivities. Furthermore, a preliminary screening for an asymmetric version of this reaction is described.

Water‐soluble gold(III/I) N‐heterocylic carbene complexes behave as efficient catalysts for the hydration of terminal alkynes in neat water. The transformation proceeds in the absence of Brønsted acids or halide scavengers and is suitable for sensitive substrates. Kinetic profiles and DFT studies provide a clear picture of intermediates present during catalysis.
