The authors discuss information transmission errors occurring between design engineers involved in software development and describe an interface design documentation system that can prevent them. The equivalence of human errors in software design and hardware manufacturing activities is established. The characteristics that must be included in an interface documentation system to prevent communication errors in software design activities, based on foolproofing principles that were identified for hardware manufacturing, are discussed. Utilizing these characteristics, an example of an interface documentation system for software products which control measuring equipment is presented. Hardware/software codesign seeks to integrate system level, hardware, and software design. Ideally, we would like tools that allow rapid evaluation of design decisions and a full exploration of the design space. Available tools are often too slow and concentrate on the low level cosimulation of hardware and software parts, after the design has been partitioned. We are attempting to remedy these problems with Tosca (Tools for System Codesign Automation), a hardware/software codesign environment. Targeted at single chip implementations consisting of a CPU core cell and dedicated hardware, Tosca performs a high level cosimulation for what-if analyses before hardware/software cosynthesis. After cosynthesis, Tosca generates simulatable software to be run on a retargetable instruction level model of the CPU. The software and hardware bound parts are then cosimulated using a commercial VHDL simulator. The performance of the low level cosimulation strategy and the high level simulator is remarkable. Low level cosimulation performance is about that of dedicated CPU software emulators-7200 pseudo assembly instructions per second. High level cosimulation is three times faster than the low level cosimulation. Both simulators allow functional debugging by interfacing to a commercial waveform visualizer (Mentor Graphics SimView). Ever increasing embedded system design complexity combined with a very tight time-to-market window has revolutionized the embedded-system design process. The concurrent design of hardware and software has displaced traditional sequential design. Further, hardware and software design now begins before the system architecture (or even the specification) is finalised. System architects, customers, and marketing departments develop requirement definitions and system specifications together. System architects define a system architecture consisting of cooperating system functions that form the basis of concurrent hardware and software design. Interface design requires the participation of both hardware and software developers. The next step integrates and tests hardware and software-this phase consists of many individual steps. Reusing components taken from previous designs or acquired from outside the design group is a main design goal to improve productivity and reduce design risk. The Blit is an experimental bitmap graphics terminal built for research into interactive computer graphics on the UNIX time-sharing system. The hardware is inexpensive and the graphics functions are implemented entirely in software. Nevertheless, the graphics performance of the Blit is comparable or superior to some displays with special-purpose graphics hardware. This paper explains the paradox by referring to some principles of design: the hardware and software should be designed together to complement each other; carefully designed software can outperform infelicitous hardware; and simplicity of design leads to efficiency of execution.
