Instant Places is an investigation into the role of Bluetooth presence and naming as techniques for situated interaction around public displays. The authors' utilization of Bluetooth naming extends beyond identity representation, introducing the use of a simple instruction mechanism in which the system can recognize parts of the Bluetooth device name as explicit instructions to trigger the generation of pervasive content on situated displays. The study specifically addresses the suitability of these techniques and the type of social practices that emerges from their availability in a real setting. The results of the study, which involved the deployment of a fully functional prototype in a bar for several weeks, suggest that, despite their simplicity, these techniques were effective in their ability to sustain situated interaction around a public display and were easily and creatively appropriated for new forms of social practices.

Computer graphics research at the University of Tokyo includes the Raster Technology Project, begun in 1968 by Tosiyasu L. Kunii in cooperation with H. Takahasi and E. Goto. This early system included a 12-bit, 4096-color frame buffer and software for interactive fashion design; pictured at right are a portion of fabric and a ?cutout doll? dressed in a similar fabric. Recent work at the lab includes a solid modeling project that Involves octrees for visible surface determination. An example of this work appears at top right.

In the July 1981 issue of IEEE CG&A (p. 49), James E. George and Anders Vinberg provided an example of a typical two-dimensional engineering data set along with eight black-and-white graphics methods for displaying this type of data. The methods they presented included carpet plots (solutions 7 and 8) as effective ways of presenting the data; this discussion continued in the May 1982 issue with E. P. Miles's low-resolution color solutions (pg. 102).

As announced in the July 1981 issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, "Display Solutions" is to be a regular feature of this department. In July we challenged readers to submit graphical representations of the raw data discussed in an article in the same issue-"The Display of Engineering and Scientific Data." Here, we present one reader's display solution.

Working at Cranston-Csuri Productions, Inc., in Columbus, Ohio, Hsuen-Chung Ho and Michael T. Collery produced ?Pencil City and Balls? (top right) on a VAX 11/780 and displayed the image on a 640 × 484 × 32-bit frame buffer. The image was created through the use of polygon-based and ray-tracing display algorithms. (Ho developed the ray-tracing algorithm with an improved antialiasing method.) The reflection and refraction on the balls, as well as the perspective view of the ground image, were calculated during the ray-tracing process.

We invite readers to submit data posing interesting representation problems and/or solutions to such problems, including display illustrations and briefdiscussions of techniques. In addition to such display solutions, we welcome the contribution ofany computer graphics image that shows effective design and skillful application of technology. Please send transparencies or prints, preferlems, ably 4 x 5-inch or larger. Send all material to Displays Editors, cdo IEEE CG&A, 10662 Los Vaqueros Circle, Los Alamitos, CA 90720.

Color, resolution, and speed, though important factors in computer graphics, must be subordinate to the message the image must deliver. While many graphics designers and users have understood this, many others, bedazzled by the powerful hardware/software tools available to them, have been tempted to use all the techniques they can instead of the ones they should. If they had a system that could graph in eight colors and fifteen fonts, for example, they used them all-with confusion of the viewer the result.
