The optimization of TiO2-impregnated chitosan beads (TICB) as an arsenic adsorbent is investigated to maximize the capacity and kinetics of arsenic removal. It has been previously reported that TICB can 1) remove arsenite, 2) remove arsenate, and 3) oxidize arsenite to arsenate in the presence of UV light and oxygen. Herein, it is reported that adsorption capacity for TICB is controlled by solution pH and TiO2 loading within the bead and enhanced with exposure to UV light. Solution pH is found to be a critical parameter, whereby arsenate is effectively removed below pH 7.25 and arsenite is effectively removed below pH 9.2. A model to predict TICB capacity, based on TiO2 loading and solution pH, is presented for arsenite, arsenate, and total arsenic in the presence of UV light. The rate of removal is increased with reductions in bead size and with exposure to UV light. Phosphate is found to be a direct competitor with arsenate for adsorption sites on TICB, but other relevant common background groundwater ions do not compete with arsenate for adsorption sites. TICB can be regenerated with weak NaOH and maintain full adsorption capacity for at least three adsorption/desorption cycles.  相似文献

Adsorption of arsenite and arsenate on amorphous iron hydroxide   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
Adsorption isotherms in solutions with ionic strengths of 0.01 at 25°C were measured over the arsenite and arsenate concentration range 10−7−10−3 M and the pH range 4–10. At low concentrations, these isotherms obeyed equations of the Langmuir type. At higher concentrations the adsorption isotherms were linear, indicating the existence of more than one type of surface site on the amorphous iron hydroxide adsorbent. Removal of arsenite and arsenate by amorphous iron hydroxide throughout the concentration range were determined as a function of pH. By careful selection of the relative concentration of arsenic and amorphous iron hydroxide and pH, removals on the order of 92% can be achieved.  相似文献

The effect of Zn2+ on both the kinetic and equilibrium aspects of arsenic adsorption to magnetite nanoparticles was investigated at pH 4.5-8.0. At pH 8.0, adsorption of both arsenate and arsenite to magnetite nanoparticles was significantly enhanced by the presence of small amount of Zn2+ in the solution. With less than 3 mg/L of Zn2+ added to the arsenic solution prior to the addition of magnetite nanoparticles, the percentage of arsenic removal by magnetite nanoparticles increased from 66% to over 99% for arsenate, and from 80% to 95% for arsenite from an initial concentration of ∼100 μg/L As at pH 8.0. Adsorption rate also increased significantly in the presence of Zn2+. The adsorption-enhancement effect of Zn2+ was not observed at pH 4.5-6.0, nor with ZnO nanoparticles, nor with surface-coated Zn-magnetite nanoparticles. The enhanced arsenic adsorption in the presence of Zn2+ cannot be due to reduced negative charge of the magnetite nanoparticles surface by zinc adsorption. Other cations, such as Ca2+ and Ag+, failed to enhance arsenic adsorption. Several potential mechanisms that could have caused the enhanced adsorption of arsenic have been tested and ruled out. Formation of a ternary surface complex by zinc, arsenic and magnetite nanoparticles is a possible mechanism controlling the observed zinc effect. Zinc-facilitated adsorption provides further advantage for magnetite nanoparticle-enhanced arsenic removal over conventional treatment approaches.

Synopsis

Arsenic adsorption to magnetite nanoparticles at neutral or slightly basic pH can be significantly enhanced with trace amount of Zn2+ due to the formation of a ternary complex.  相似文献

The removal of phosphates from acidic wastewater using three types of soil minerals (Soil 1, Soil 2, and Soil 3) with a high content of paligorskite, smectite, and illite, respectively, is studied. The effect of the medium pH value, contact duration, and solid-liquid ratio is considered. The smectite-containing soil possesses the highest sorption capacity with respect to phosphate. The isotherms of phosphate sorption by soils are processed in the Freundlich and Langmuir equation coordinates. It is shown that the fitting of isotherms in the Freundlich equation coordinates results in better correspondence with experimental data. In addition, the adsorption selectivity of ions (PO4 3?, F?, Cl?) existing in the waste solution by these soils was studied, and the fluoride is more selective in the acid pH region.  相似文献

Phosphate treated sawdust shows remarkable increase in sorption capacity of Cr(VI) as compared to untreated sawdust. The adsorption process is pH dependent. 100% adsorption of Cr(VI) was observed in the pH range <2 for the initial Cr(VI) concentration of 8–50 mg 1−1. The effect of various adsorbent doses at pH 2 confirms Langmuir adsorption isotherms. 100% removal of Cr(VI) from synthetic waste as well as from electroplating waste containing 50 mg 1−1 Cr(VI) was achieved by batch as well as by column processes. The adsorbed Cr(VI) on phosphate treated sawdust was recovered (87%) using 0.01 M sodium hydroxide.  相似文献

Equilibrium and kinetic adsorption of tri-valent (arsenite) and penta-valent (arsenate) arsenic to activated alumina is elucidated. The properties of activated alumina, including porosity, specific surface area, and skeleton density were first measured. A batch reactor with temperature control was employed to determine both adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetics for arsenite and arsenate to activated-alumina grains. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm equations were then used to describe the partitioning behavior for the system at different pH. A pore diffusion model, coupled with the observed Freundlich or Langmuir isotherm equations, was used to interpret an observed experimental adsorption kinetic curve for arsenite at one specific condition. The model was found to fit with the experimental data fairly well, and pore diffusion coefficients can be extracted. The model, incorporated with the interpreted pore diffusion coefficient, was then employed to predict the experimental data for arsenite and arsenate at various conditions, including different initial arsenic concentrations, grain sizes of activated alumina, and system pHs. The model predictions were found to describe the experimental data fairly well, even though the tested conditions substantially differed from one another. The agreement among the models and experimental data indicated that the adsorption and diffusion of arsenate and arsenite can be simulated by the proposed model.  相似文献

Defluoridation from aqueous solutions by granular ferric hydroxide (GFH)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This research was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of granular ferric hydroxide (GFH) for fluoride removal from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were performed to study the influence of various experimental parameters such as contact time (1 min-24 h), initial fluoride concentration (1-100 mg L−1), temperature (10 and 25 °C), pH (3-12) and the presence of competing anions on the adsorption of fluoride on GFH. Kinetic data revealed that the uptake rate of fluoride was rapid in the beginning and 95% adsorption was completed within 10 min and equilibrium was achieved within 60 min. The sorption process was well explained with pseudo-first-order and pore diffusion models. The maximum adsorption capacity of GFH for fluoride removal was 7.0 mg g−1. The adsorption was found to be an endothermic process and data conform to Langmuir model. The optimum fluoride removal was observed between pH ranges of 4-8. The fluoride adsorption was decreased in the presence of phosphate followed by carbonate and sulphate. Results from this study demonstrated potential utility of GFH that could be developed into a viable technology for fluoride removal from drinking water.  相似文献

Mixed metal oxide impregnated chitosan beads (MICB) containing nanocrystalline Al2O3 and nanocrystalline TiO2 were successfully developed. This adsorbent exploits the high capacity of Al2O3 for arsenate and the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 to oxidize arsenite to arsenate, resulting in a removal capacity higher than that of either metal oxide alone. The composition of the beads was optimized for maximum arsenite removal in the presence of UV light. The mechanism of removal was investigated and a mode of action was proposed wherein TiO2 oxidizes arsenite to arsenate which is then removed from solution by Al2O3. Pseudo-second order kinetics were used to validate the proposed mechanism. MICB is a more efficient and effective adsorbent for arsenic than TiO2-impregnated chitosan beads (TICB), previously reported on, yet maintains a desirable life cycle, free of complex synthesis processes, toxic materials, and energy inputs.  相似文献

The paper investigates sorption removal of 90Sr from water media by the tobacco ore of the Kerch iron-ore basin. It has been found that effective sorption is observed within the pH interval 6–9, the limit value of adsorption of strontium ions calculate by means of the Langmuir equation constitutes 17.95 mg/g. It is shown that sorbent efficiency for the removal of 90Sr from water is determined, in the first place, by their salt composition—nature of macrocomponents characteristic for water media (Na+, K+ and Ca2+) and their concentration.  相似文献

A novel KMnO4–Fe(II) process was developed in this study for As(III) removal. The optimum As(III) removal was achieved at a permanganate dosage of 18.6 μM. At the optimum dosage of permanganate, the KMnO4–Fe(II) process was much more efficient than the KMnO4–Fe(III) process for As(III) removal by 15–38% at pH 5–9. The great difference in As(III) removal in these two processes was not ascribed to the uptake of arsenic by the MnO2 formed in situ but to the different properties of conventional Fe(III) and the Fe(III) formed in situ. It was found that the presence of Ca2+ had limited effects on As(III) removal under acidic conditions but resulted in a significant increase in As(III) removal under neutral and alkaline conditions in the KMnO4–Fe(II) process. Moreover, the effects of Ca2+ on As(III) removal in the KMnO4–Fe(II) process were greater at lower permanganate dosage when Fe(II) was not completely oxidized by permanganate. This study revealed that the improvement of As(III) removal at pH 7–9 in the KMnO4–Fe(II) process by Ca2+ was associated with three reasons: (1) the specific adsorption of Ca2+ increased the surface charge; (2) the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate and calcite precipitate that could co-precipitate arsenate; (3) the introduction of calcium resulted in more precipitated ferrous hydroxide or ferric hydroxide. On the other hand, the enhancement of arsenic removal by Ca2+ under acidic conditions was ascribed to the increase of Fe retained in the precipitate. FTIR tests demonstrated that As(III) was removed as arsenate by forming monodentate complex with Fe(III) formed in situ in the KMnO4–Fe(II) process when KMnO4 was applied at 18.6 μM. The strength of the “non-surface complexed” As–O bonds of the precipitated arsenate species was enhanced by the presence of Ca2+ and the complexation reactions of arsenate with Fe(III) formed in situ in the presence or absence of Ca2+ were proposed.  相似文献

Adsorption of As(V) and As(III) by nanocrystalline titanium dioxide   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study evaluated the effectiveness of nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) in removing arsenate [As(V)] and arsenite [As(III)] and in photocatalytic oxidation of As(III). Batch adsorption and oxidation experiments were conducted with TiO(2) suspensions prepared in a 0.04 M NaCl solution and in a challenge water containing the competing anions phosphate, silicate, and carbonate. The removal of As(V) and As(III) reached equilibrium within 4h and the adsorption kinetics were described by a pseudo-second-order equation. The TiO(2) was effective for As(V) removal at pH<8 and showed a maximum removal for As(III) at pH of about 7.5 in the challenge water. The adsorption capacity of the TiO(2) for As(V) and As(III) was much higher than fumed TiO(2) (Degussa P25) and granular ferric oxide. More than 0.5 mmol/g of As(V) and As(III) was adsorbed by the TiO(2) at an equilibrium arsenic concentration of 0.6mM. The presence of the competing anions had a moderate effect on the adsorption capacities of the TiO(2) for As(III) and As(V) in a neutral pH range. In the presence of sunlight and dissolved oxygen, As(III) (26.7 microM or 2mg/L) was completely converted to As(V) in a 0.2g/L TiO(2) suspension through photocatalytic oxidation within 25 min. The nanocrystalline TiO(2) is an effective adsorbent for As(V) and As(III) and an efficient photocatalyst.  相似文献

The precipitation features of calcium phosphate in a fluidized bed reactor in the concentration range between 5 and 100 mg P 1−1 were studied, and the conditions for optimum phosphate removal efficiency were established. The supply of calcium ions should be such that a Ca/P molar ratio of 3 at the inlet of the reactor is achieved. If the water to be treated does not contain magnesium or carbonate ions, the supply of base should suffice to promote a conversion of 50–65% of the incoming phosphate to the solid phase. In the presence of carbonate and magnesium ions, the base supply should provide a conversion of 80–95%. Magnesium and carbonate ions did not have a detrimental effect on the phosphate removal efficiency for inlet concentrations of up to 4.8 × 10−3 (Mg/P < 2 mol mol−1) and 1.8 × 10−3 kmol m−3, respectively. The feasibility of a process based on the precipitation of magnesium phosphate instead of calcium phosphate was demonstrated for waters with a low calcium content (Ca/P < 0.8 mol mol−1). Finally a method is presented to select process conditions where co-precipitation of unwanted phases can be avoided.  相似文献

The sorption of the arsenite (AsO33−) and the arsenate (AsO43−) ions and their conjugate acids onto iron oxides is one of main processes controlling the distribution of arsenic in the environment. The present work intends to provide a large vibrational spectroscopic database for comparison of As(III) and As(V) speciation in aqueous solutions and at the iron oxide - solution interface. With this purpose, ferrihydrite, feroxyhyte, goethite and hematite were firstly synthesized, characterized in detail and used for adsorption experiments. Raman spectra were recorded from As(III) and As(V) aqueous solutions at various pH conditions selected in order to highlight arsenic speciation. Raman Scattering and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) studies were carried out to examine the respective As-bonding mechanisms. The collected data were curve-fitted and discussed according to molecular symmetry concepts. X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) was applied to confirm the oxidation state of the sorbed species. The comprehensive spectroscopic investigation contributes to a better understanding of arsenic complexation by iron oxides.  相似文献

Chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] is adsorbed as HCrO4 on iron(III) hydroxide at pH below 8.5. The Cr(VI) adsorption is suppressed by the presence of other anions such as SO2−4 and SCN, and enhanced by the presence of metal ions such as Cd(II) and Pb(II). The suppression is due to the competitive adsorption of other anions, depending upon the stability of their iron complexes. The enhancement is probably due to the increase in adsorption sites as a result of coprecipitation of metal ion with iron(III) hydroxide.  相似文献

Synthesized are hybrid organoinoragnic adsorbents based on organic resins Dowex SBR-P, Dowex Marathon II and hydrated oxides Zn(IV), Ti(IV), Sn(IV) and Fe(III). Specific conductivity was measured of the specified resins and hybrid organoinorganic adsorbents in the initial form and after absorption of ions As(V) from 10–2 M aqueous solution of NaH2AsO4. Introduction of hydrated tin oxide increases ionic conductivity of organic resin Dowex SBR-P by 2.5 times. During the conversion to the arsenate form the conductivity of hybrid adsorbents changes insufficiently at the adsorption from the solution with pH 7 and increased by 2–10 times at adsorption from the solution with pH 2.  相似文献

A series of non-ionic surfactants of nonyl-phenol ethoxylates, with n = 4?23;0 ethylene oxide groups and dinonyl-phenol ethoxylate were studied in dilute aqueous solution. Their removal efficiencies and mechanisms by adsorption on powdered and granular activated carbon and on Na-montmorillonite clay were investigated. The powdered activated carbon proved to be the most efficient with 94–100% non-ionic surfactants removal by addition of 40–80 mg activated carbon.Various models of adsorption isotherms such as Langmuir, BET and S-type were used to determine Q4, the limiting adsorption capacity. The relationships between Qo and parameters affecting the adsorption of non-ionic surfactants such as n, HLB and CMC were determined. The cross-sectional area σ0 occupied by surfactant molecules on the adsorbent was calculated. Adsorption has been proven to be a potential advanced physicochemical treatment method for the effective removal of non-ionic surfactants present in effluents intended for reuse.  相似文献

The retention capacity for arsenic species of new nanomaterials based on tin(II) inorganic oxides or hybrid (inorganic and organic) materials was studied. The synthesis of a polymer-metal complex was performed with poly(acrylic acid) and tin(II) chloride. Poly(AA)-Sn(II) with 10 and 20 wt% of tin and a structure with a mol ratio tin:carboxylate group of 1:1, were characterized. These compounds with 10 and 20 wt% of tin content were used to compare the arsenic removal capability through the liquid-phase polymer-based retention, (LPR), technique. Also, tin oxide was prepared by adding alkaline solution to tin(II) chloride salt. The intermediate tin compound was studied by UV-Vis spectroscopy at different pH values and quantified by potentiometric titration. The solid structure is characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and specific area BET (N2). Removal of arsenite and arsenate species from solution by hydrolysated tin was carried out by LPR technique with ultrafiltration membranes and a fixed-bed column unsupported or supported on SiO2. In all these cases, a washing method at constant pH was applied. The arsenic retention ability depended on the class of tin compounds prepared, with a higher efficiency for arsenic being observed at basic pH for soluble complex poly(AA)-Sn(II) than that for tin hydroxide or hydrolysate of Sn+2.  相似文献

The absorption characteristics of some heavy metals, namely CU(II), Pb(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) onto the hydrous activated carbon surface are studied. Carbon type, pH and surface loading are the most important factors affecting the extent of metal removal. The adsorption reaction can be best described by a surface complex formation model. The free metal ions, M2+, and their hydroxo species, M(OH)y2−y all participate in the absorption reaction. Specific chemical bonding, probably hydrogen bonding provided the sole energy needed for adsorption reaction.  相似文献

This research studied As(III) and As(V) removal during electrocoagulation (EC) in comparison with FeCl3 chemical coagulation (CC). The study also attempted to verify chlorine production and the reported oxidation of As(III) during EC. Results showed that As(V) removal during batch EC was erratic at pH 6.5 and the removal was higher-than-expected based on the generation of ferrous iron (Fe2+) during EC. As(V) removal by batch EC was equal to or better than CC at pH 7.5 and 8.5, however soluble Fe2+ was observed in the 0.2-μm membrane filtrate at pH 7.5 (10-45%), and is a cause for concern. Continuous steady-state operation of the EC unit confirmed the deleterious presence of soluble Fe2+ in the treated water. The higher-than-expected As(V) removals during batch mode were presumed due to As(V) adsorption onto the iron rod oxyhydroxides surfaces prior to the attainment of steady-state operation. As(V) removal increased with decreasing pH during both CC and EC, however EC at pH 6.5 was anomalous because of erratic Fe2+ oxidation. The best adsorption capacity was observed with CC at pH 6.5, while lower but similar adsorption capacities were observed at pH 7.5 and 8.5 with CC and EC. A comparison of As(III) adsorption showed better removals during EC compared with CC possibly due to a temporary pH increase during EC. In contrast to literature reports, As(III) oxidation was not observed during EC, and As(III) adsorption onto iron hydroxides during EC was only 5-30% that of As(V) adsorption. Also in contrast to literature, significant Cl2 was not generated during EC, in fact, the rods actually produced a significant chlorine demand due to reduced iron oxides on the rod. Although Cl2 generation and As(III) oxidation are possible using a graphite anode, a combination of graphite and iron rods in the same EC unit did not produce As(III) oxidation. However, a two-stage process (graphite anode followed by iron anode in separate chambers) was effective in As(III) oxidation and removal. The competing ions, silica and phosphate interfered with As(V) adsorption during both CC and EC. However, the degree of interference depends on the concentration and presence of other competing ions. In particular, the presence of silica lowered the effect of phosphate with increasing pH due to silica’s own significant effect at high pHs.  相似文献
