The performances of porous bearings under different operating conditions were experimentally investigated in this study. Material groups studied are 90%Cu+10%Sn bronze and 1%C + % balance Fe iron-based self-lubricating P/M bearings at constant (85%) density. In the experiments, the variation of the coefficient of friction and wear ratio of those two different group materials for different sliding speeds, loads, and temperatures were investigated. As a result, the variation of the friction coefficient - temperature for both constant load, and constant sliding speed, friction coefficient - average bearing pressure, PV - wear loss and temperature-wear loss curves were plotted and compared with each other for two materials, separately. The test results showed that Cu-based bearings have better friction and wear properties than Fe-based bearings.

In this study, we investigated the effect of temperature on the friction and wear of rice bran (RB) ceramics, a hard porous carbon material made from rice bran, sliding against alumina, stainless steel, and bearing steel balls under dry conditions. Friction tests were performed using a ball-on-disk-type friction tester wherein a ceramic heater was installed in the rotational stage. The surface temperature of the RB ceramic disk specimens was controlled at 20, 100, 150, or 200°C. The normal load was 1.96 N, sliding velocity was 0.1 m/s, and number of cycles was 20,000. The effect of surface temperature on the friction and wear of RB ceramics substantially differed among the ball material types. The friction coefficient for the RB ceramics sliding against an alumina ball decreased with increasing temperature and exhibited an extremely low value (0.045) at 200°C. The friction coefficient in the case of the RB ceramics sliding against a stainless steel ball exhibited a stable value as the temperature was increased to 150°C and slightly decreased as the temperature was increased further, reaching a low value of 0.122 at 200°C. The friction coefficient for the RB ceramics sliding against bearing steel ball drastically increased with increasing temperature, reaching 0.381 at 200°C. The specific wear rate of the RB ceramics increased with increasing temperature; it was lowest when sliding against alumina and highest when sliding against bearing steel. The wear of the alumina ball was the lowest and that of the bearing steel ball was the highest under all investigated temperature conditions. On the basis of these results, we concluded that alumina is a promising counterpart material for RB ceramics sliding at high temperatures (≤200°C).

The performance and durability of advanced, high temperature foil air bearings are evaluated under a wide range (10 to 50 kPa) of loads at temperatures from 25° to 650 °C. The bearings are made from uncoated nickel based superalloy foils. The foil surface experiences sliding contact with the shaft during initial start/stop operation. To reduce friction and wear, the solid lubricant coating, PS304, is applied to the shaft by plasma spraying. PS304 is a NiCr based Cr2O3 coating with silver and barium fluoride/calcium fluoride solid lubricant additions.

The results show that the bearings provide lives well in excess of 30,000 cycles under all of the conditions tested. Several bearings exhibited lives in excess of 100,000 cycles. Wear is a linear function of the bearing load. The excellent performance measured in this study suggests that these bearings and the PS304 coating are well suited for advanced high temperature, oil-free turbomachinery applications.

A sputter-deposited bilayer coating of gold and chromium was investigated as a potential solid lubricant to protect alumina substrates in applications involving sliding at high temperatures. The lubricant was tested in a pin-on-disk tribometer with coated alumina disks sliding against uncoated alumina pins. Three test parameters—temperature, load and sliding velocity—were varied over a wide range in order to determine the performance envelope of the Au/Cr solid lubricant film. The tribo-tests were run in air at temperatures of 25° to 1000°C, under loads of 4.9 to 49.0 N and at sliding velocities from 1 to 15 ms?1. Posttest analyses included surface profilometry, wear factor determination and SEM/EDS examination of worn surfaces.

Compared to unlubricaled Al2O3 sliding, the use of the Au/Cr film reduced friction by 30 to 50 percent and wear by one to two orders of magnitude. Increases in test temperature resulted in lower friction and the Au/Cr film continued to provide low friction, about 0.3, even at 1000°C. Pin wear factors and friction were largely unaffected by increasing loads up to 29.4 N. Sliding velocity had essentially no effect on friction, however, increased velocity reduced coaling life (total sliding distance). Based upon these research results, the Au/Cr film is a promising lubricant for moderately loaded, low-speed applications operating at temperatures as high as 1000°C.

An extensive test program was conducted to determine the performance characteristics (friction, wear, temperature) of a linear high temperature perfluoroalkylpolyether (PFPE) and two branched PFPE lubricants under normal and severe operating conditions. These include temperatures up to 200° C and Hertzian pressures as high as 2.8 GPa. A four-ball wear tester was used to measure wear scar and a two-disk machine was used to measure friction. The linear perfluoroalkylpolyether lubricant demonstrated low friction and wear at elevated temperatures under the test conditions considered. A bearing testing apparatus was used to measure friction and temperature of tapered roller bearings under various operating conditions for a branched PFPE and the results are reported.

Si3N4/9Cr18在常温下摩擦因数低于9Cr18/9Cr18配副,而在低温下则高于9Cr18/9Cr18配副。

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) becomes of great interest to applications as bearing and slider materials. In this paper, PEEK coatings with three kinds of crystallinities were deposited using the flame spray process. Employing a uniform design experiment, the friction and wear behavior of the three PEEK coatings were systematically investigated under dry sliding conditions against a 100C6 counterbody on a ball-on-disc arrangement for several loads and sliding velocities. For the three coatings, the friction coefficient significantly followed the normal distribution. The average friction coefficients appeared to decrease while increasing the sliding velocity, but were insensitive to the applied load in the range of investigation. Among the three coatings, the higher the crystallinity of the coating, the lower its average friction coefficient was. The wear rate of the coating with the lowest crystallinity decreased with an increase in the load and a decrease in the sliding velocity. The wear rate of the coating with the intermediate crystallinity decreased with an increase in the load, but increased with an increase in the sliding velocity at lower loads, and then decreased with an increase in the velocity at higher loads. The wear rate of the coating with the highest crystallinity decreased with the increase of both the load and the sliding velocity. The wear mechanisms of the different coatings are explained in terms of plastic deformation, plogh marks and fatigue tearing.

Novel poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) resins have become of great interest in applications such as bearing and slider materials. In this paper, dry sliding wear of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and graphite-filled PPESK composites against polished steel counterparts were investigated on a block-on-ring apparatus at the same sliding velocities and different loads. The results indicated that the addition of 5–25 wt% PTFE and 5–30 wt% graphite contribute to an obvious improvement of tribological performance of PPESK at room temperature. Worn surfaces were investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the PPESK composites decreased gradually with addition of fillers. A moderately low friction coefficient and specific wear rate were reached when the filler contents were above 20 wt%. The mechanical properties of PPESK composites were also investigated. The tensile and impact strength of PPESK composites decrease slightly as the addition of fillers contents were below 15 wt%.

The presence of hard contaminants in lubrication can lead to the premature failure of rolling bearings. To reduce the negative effect of such contaminants, hard carbon-based coatings (diamond-like carbon; DLC) can be applied to the surfaces of steel bearings. DLC coatings generate a low friction and a high sliding wear resistance to enhance the tribological properties and improve the durability of running components. This work explores the merits of DLC coatings for use in very demanding applications, such as in highly contaminated environments. The wear properties of DLC-coated bearing rollers were evaluated by comparing them with uncoated rollers. The degree of wear found on the coated rollers was serious, especially under relatively high contaminant concentrations. The three-body abrasive wear produced a relatively coarse scoring of the coating surface, which caused the corresponding disc to suffer more damage than the disc running against an uncoated roller under the same operating conditions. The results indicate that supposedly wear-protective coatings cause even more damage to running surfaces once they have been broken up by hard contaminants, and highlight the importance of keeping the bearing coating intact. In practise, it is important to eliminate contaminants from the lubricant of rolling bearings, in particular for bearings with a DLC anti-wear coating.

Surface texturing is used to increase hydrodynamic pressure and reduce friction and wear between gas-lubricated parallel sliding surfaces in a variety of applications. The shape, geometry, and density of the patterned microtexture features (“dimples”) play a key role in the tribological performance of textured slider bearings. In this paper we evaluate the friction coefficient and stiffness of gas-lubricated textured parallel slider bearings as a function of six different texture shapes. The texture geometry and density are optimized in terms of minimum friction coefficient and maximum bearing stiffness for each individual texture shape, and then compared relative to each other. The ellipsoidal shape is found to yield the minimum friction coefficient and the highest bearing stiffness, independent of the operating conditions.

Moving machine assemblies are generally designed to operate in full film lubrication regime to ensure high efficiency and durability of components. However, it is not always possible to ensure this owing to changes in operating conditions such as load, speed, and temperature. The overall frictional losses in machines are dependent on the operating lubrication regimes (boundary, mixed or full-film). The present work is thus aimed at investigating the role of different surface modification technologies on friction of a sliding bearing/roller tribopair both in boundary and mixed lubrication regimes. A special test rig comprising of two bearings was built for the experimental studies. Tribological tests were conducted in a wide speed range to enable studies in boundary and mixed lubrication regimes. The influence of application of different surface modification technologies on both the sliding bearing and the roller surfaces on friction has been studied. The rollers used in these studies were provided with five different coatings (hard DLCs and a soft self-lubricating coating). Additionally, two uncoated rollers having different surface roughness were also studied. Uncoated bearings were used in all tribopairs except two. These two bearings were coated with DLC and phosphate coatings respectively and uncoated rollers were the mating counterparts. Friction measurements were made on the new as well as the previously run-in surfaces. It was found that the rollers with self-lubricating coating resulted in lowest boundary friction closely followed by the rollers with the hardest DLC coatings. The DLC coating applied on to the bearing showed lower boundary friction after running-in. Mixed friction has been found to be mainly dependent on the surface topography characteristics of both the original and the run-in surfaces of bearings and rollers. The harder DLC coatings and the phosphated bearing showed the lowest mixed friction due to an efficient running-in of the bearing surface.

DLC solid lubricant coatings on ball bearings for space applications
The environment of space offers special challenges for the lubrication of components in sliding and rolling mechanisms. Hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are being studied as solid lubricant coatings to simultaneously fulfil specifications regarding wear resistance and low friction behaviour under ambient atmosphere and in vacuum. In this paper, the tribological behaviour of highly hydrogenated DLC coatings (50 at% hydrogen) is assessed. Coating composition was optimised on flat AISI 52100 steel substrates based on ball-on-disc tribotest results in air, vacuum and dry nitrogen environments. The developed DLC coatings can be tailored to yield ultra-low friction values in vacuum (μ=0.008). The average friction coefficient range obtained in humid air, dry nitrogen and vacuum for the range of applied loads were, respectively, 0.22 to 0.27, 0.02 to 0.03, and 0.007 to 0.013.New in this work is that optimised DLC coatings were applied to ball bearings for space applications. The torque and life tests of coated pairs of angular contact bearings in air revealed that relatively high bearing torques are generated which increase with time, but the amount of coating wear generated during in-air operation appears relatively light. In vacuum, low torques are generated after a prolonged running-in period. Low-torque life exceeds that observed for MoS2 by a factor of about two. It is concluded that, in contrast to MoS2 coated bearings, DLC-coated bearings for space applications might therefore be capable of undergoing in-air ground testing without too much disruption of the subsequent in-space performance.

This article aims to study the friction and wear behavior of Ti3Al2.5V alloy sliding against EN-31 steel under dry condition using a multi-tribotester. The effect of variation in load and sliding velocity on wear rate, average coefficient of friction, and contact temperature has been studied and analysis of wear debris has been carried out. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed to study the morphology of the wear tracks and deduce microchemical information at the elemental level of worn samples, respectively. Results reveal that the wear rate of Ti-3Al-2.5V increases with increasing sliding velocity and increasing normal load with few exceptions. The average coefficient of friction decreases as the normal load increases with exceptions at some loads. SEM micrographs of worn samples obtained at different loads and sliding velocities show the formation of wear tracks on the surface due to ploughing and flaking of the matrix. The main mechanism responsible for wear of Ti3Al2.5V alloy sample is rupture of the matrix and abrasion. Wear debris analysis shows irregular-shaped wear particles with very sharp edges that appeared to be plastically deformed at high sliding velocity, whereas the wear debris is very loose and fine at lowest sliding velocity.

A test program to determine the relative slitting durability of an alumina-silica candidate ceramic fiber for high temperature sliding seal applications is described. Pin-on-disk tests were used to evaluate the potential seal material by sliding a tow or bundle of the candidate ceramic fiber against a superalloy test disk. Friction was measured during the tests and fiber wear, indicated h the extent of fibers broken in the tow or bundle, was measured at the end of each test. Test variables studied included ambient temperature from 25° to 900°C, loads from 1.3 to 21.2 N, and sliding velocities from 0.025 to 0.25 m/sec. In addition, the effects of fiber diameter and elastic modulus on friction and wear were measured. Thin gold films deposited on the superalloy disk surface were evaluated in an effort to reduce friction and wear of the fibers.

In most cases, wear increased with test temperature. Friction ranged from 0.36 at 500°C and low velocity (0.025 miser) to over 1.1 at 900°C and high velocity (0.25 m/sec). The gold films resulted in satisfactory lubrication of the fibers at 25°C. At elevated temperatures diffusion of substrate elements degraded the films. These results indicate that the alumina-silica (Al2O3SiO2) fiber is a good candidate material system for high temperature sliding seal applications. More work is needed to reduce friction.

Ball bearings incorporating two different types of dry self-lubricating retainer materials were successfully operated in a vacuum over the pressure range of 1 × 10?7 to 2 × 10?8 (mm of H) torr for prolonged periods of time. A 20 mm bore ball bearing of AISI M-10 tool steel with a filled plastic retainer was operated over a range of temperatures from 100 F to 160 F and similar bearings with filled metal retainers were operated over a temperature range of ?300 F to 450 F, at radial loads up to 75 pounds. Other ball bearings using both types of self-lubricating retainer materials were operated in electric motors in the vacuum environment.

In selecting the dry self-lubricating materials for the ball bearing tests, plastics powders and composite materials were screened in an inert atmosphere to determine wear and friction characteristics. Each of the materials that exhibited desirable lubricating properties was then subjected to a vacuum at elevated temperatures to determine the rate of outgassing. These materials were then satisfactorily used as the dry self-lubricating retainers in the 20 mm bearings which operated in the vacuum environment.

Use of composite material is increasing due to economical processing of complicated shapes in large quantities. Addition of fiber/particulates improves the composite strength. In the current study, the tribological characterization of polymer based particulate composites which are processed at room temperature are investigated. The friction and wear behavior of polystyrene reinforced with steel powder (polymer–metal), alumina powder (polymer–ceramic) and a mix of steel and alumina powders (polymer–metal–ceramic) have been investigated under dry sliding conditions using a pin-on-disc tribometer. Tests were conducted at different normal loads and sliding velocities at room temperature. Coefficient of friction and wear loss during the wear tests are determined. Presence of metal and ceramic particulates affects the tribological behavior of the composite. The rise in temperature of the pin during sliding was measured. The rise in contact temperature is influenced by the composition which in turn influences the wear behaviour. The polymer–ceramic composite exhibits the lowest wear rate among the materials investigated.

Solid lubricants such as molybdenum disulfide can provide very low friction, but their effectiveness especially in the geometrically constrained sliding pairs is limited by plowing of coated surfaces by wear particles. Even in the presence of solid lubricants wear particles cause higher friction by plowing the interface. To minimize plowing, undulated surfaces with microgrooves perpendicular to the sliding direction can be used to trap wear particles. Smooth and undulated stainless steel surfaces were coated with molybdenum disulfide by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and friction tested. Under identical test conditions, the friction coefficient of coated undulated surfaces is between 20–40 percent lower than that of coated smooth surfaces. The friction coefficient of undulated uncoated surfaces is about 100–350 percent less than that of smooth uncoated surfaces. Moreover, the entrapment of wear particles at the interfaces of geometrically constrained bearings may lead to seizure even when bearing surfaces are coated with solid lubricants. The use of undulated surf aces on these sliding systems has shown improved operating time and a reduced maintenance cycle.
