Location update optimization in personal communication systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mobility tracking is concerned with finding a mobile subscriber (MS) within the area serviced by the wireless network. The two basic operations for tracking an MS, location updating and paging, constitute additional load on the wireless network. The total cost of updating and paging can be minimized by optimally dividing the service area into location registration (LR) areas. There are various factors affecting this cost, including the mobility and call patterns of the individual MS, the shape, size and orientation of the LR area, and the method of searching for the MS within the LR area. Based on various mobility patterns of users and network architecture, the design of the LR area is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem. The objective is to minimize the location update cost subject to a constraint on the size of the LR area. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The two basic operations for tracking an MS, location updating and paging, constitute additional load on the wireless network. The total cost of updating and paging can be minimized by optimally dividing the cellular area into location registration (LR) areas. In current systems broadcast paging messages are sent within the LR area to alert the MS of an incoming call. In this paper we propose a selective paging strategy which uses the MS mobility and call patterns to minimize the cost of locating an MS within an LR area subject to a constraint on the delay in locating the MS. A 0-1 integer programming model is considered to determine the most appropriate dynamic location registration (LR) area of each subscriber in microcellular systems. The minimization model of the LR area updating and paging signal costs is examined. The model is based on the subscriber characteristics, such as the call arrival rate and the velocity, as well as the regional information. The control channel blocking probabilities are considered as constraints to meet the service level of subscribers. A dynamic scheme which adaptively updates the size and shape of the LR area is developed by solving the minimization problem. Paging and location updating procedures are presented based on the dynamic procedure. The superiority of the proposed scheme is demonstrated with various computational results  相似文献

This paper introduces a mobility tracking mechanism that combines a movement-based location update policy with a selective paging scheme. Movement-based location update is selected for its simplicity. It does not require each mobile terminal to store information about the arrangement and the distance relationship of all cells. In fact, each mobile terminal only keeps a counter of the number of cells visited. A location update is performed when this counter exceeds a predefined threshold value. This scheme allows the dynamic selection of the movement threshold on a per-user basis. This is desirable as different users may have very different mobility patterns. Selective paging reduces the cost for locating a mobile terminal in the expense of an increase in the paging delay. We propose a selective paging scheme which significantly decreases the location tracking cost under a small increase in the allowable paging delay. We introduce an analytical model for the proposed location tracking mechanism which captures the mobility and the incoming call arrival patterns of each mobile terminal. Analytical results are provided to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the proposed scheme under various parameters  相似文献

Replication strategy is mostly useful for replicating the mobile user’s profile at selected locations from which some callers have higher calling rate. Location management scheme also include replication strategy to reduce the location lookup cost of called mobile user. It plays important role in personal communication services in order to reduce call setup cost, call setup time, and increases the QoS (quality of service). In prior replication schemes, called user’s location profile is placed at some fixed and limited number of visitor location registers (VLRs) based on call history of the caller. In prior hybrid schemes location update and replication strategies are combined together. These prior hybrid schemes apply pointer forwarding strategy and replication. But these schemes have limitations like holding “loose” form of location profile and higher location update cost. We have proposed a new hybrid scheme which includes adaptive replication of updated user’s location profile and mobility anchoring point (MAP) for location update. The main objective of the proposed scheme is to reduce call setup cost and call setup time. In order to achieve the objective, adaptive replication is applied at certain visitor location registers (VLRs) according to movement of caller. The replica is kept updated at MAP and replicated to neighbor VLRs as per movement of the caller. We have presented fluid-flow based analytical modeling which shows that proposed scheme outperforms the prior hybrid scheme.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an extension to the personal communication services (PCS) location management protocol which uses dynamically overlapped registration areas. The scheme is based on monitoring the aggregate mobility and call pattern of the users during each reconfiguration period and adapting to the mobility and call patterns by either expanding or shrinking registration areas at the end of each reconfiguration period. We analytically characterize the trade-off resulting from the inclusion or exclusion of a cell in a registration area in terms of expected change in aggregate database access cost and signaling overhead. This characterization is used to guide the registration area adaption in a manner in which the signaling and database access load on any given location register (LR) does not exceed a specified limit. Our simulation results show that it is useful to dynamically adapt the registration areas to the aggregate mobility and call patterns of the mobile units when the mobility pattern exhibits locality. For such mobility and call patterns, the proposed scheme can greatly reduce the average signaling and database access load on LRs. Further, the cost of adapting the registration areas is shown to be low in terms of memory and communication requirements.  相似文献

This paper presents a mobile tracking scheme that exploits the predictability of user mobility patterns in wireless PCS networks. In this scheme, a mobile's future location is predicted by the network, based on the information gathered from the mobile's recent report of location and velocity. When a call is made, the network pages the destination mobile around the predicted location. A mobile makes the same location prediction as the network does; it inspects its own location periodically and reports the new location when the distance between the predicted and the actual locations exceeds a threshold. To more realistically represent the various degrees of velocity correlation in time, a Gauss-Markov mobility model is used. For practical systems where the mobility pattern varies over time, we propose a dynamic Gauss-Markov parameter estimator that provides the mobility parameters to the prediction algorithm. Based on the Gauss-Markov model, we describe an analytical framework to evaluate the cost of mobility management for the proposed scheme. We also present an approximation method that reduces the computational complexity of the cost evaluation for multidimensional systems. We then compare the cost of predictive mobility management against that of the regular, nonpredictive distance-based scheme, for both the case with ideal Gauss-Markov mobility pattern and the case with time-varying mobility pattern.  相似文献

We propose and analyze a cross-layer integrated mobility and service management scheme called DMAPwSR in Mobile IPv6 environments with the goal to minimize the overall mobility and service management cost for serving mobile users with diverse mobility and service characteristics. The basic idea of DMAPwSR is that each mobile node (MN) can utilize its cross-layer knowledge to choose smart routers to be its dynamic mobility anchor points (DMAPs) to balance the cost associated with mobility services versus packet delivery services. These smart routers are just access routers for MIPv6 systems except that they are capable of processing binding messages from the MN and storing the current location of the MN in the routing table for forwarding service packets destined to the MN. The MN’s DMAP changes dynamically as the MN roams across the MIPv6 network. Furthermore the DMAP service area also changes dynamically reflecting the MN’s mobility and service behaviors dynamically. Unlike previous mobility management protocols such as HMIPv6 that focus only on mobility management, DMAPwSR considers integrated mobility and service management. We develop an analytical model based on stochastic Petri nets to analyze DMAPwSR and compare its performance against MIPv6 and HMIPv6. We validate analytical solutions obtained through extensive simulation including sensitivity analysis of simulation results with respect to the network coverage model, the MN’s residence time distribution and the DMAP service area definition.  相似文献

Important aspects of mobility and security in the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) system are discussed in this paper. Mobility management functions are broadly categorized into three groups: a) mobile turned on, b) mobile turned off, and c) mobile in conversation. The paper first outlines the mobile synchronization sequence followed by its mobility functions: mobile identification, authentication, international mobile station identity attach/detach, and its location update. The important role of security in the GSM system is fully explored, including authentication, encryption, and positive identification of mobile equipment before the user is provided with the service. The future of mobility management with respect to subscriber identification module roaming, intersystem roaming, advancement in mobile service, and its impact on data base requirements, is covered  相似文献

A predictive model‐based mobility tracking method, called dead reckoning, is developed for mobile ad hoc networks. It disseminates both location and movement models of mobile nodes in the network so that every node is able to predict or track the movement of every other node with a very low overhead. The basic technique is optimized to use ‘distance effect’, where distant nodes maintain less accurate tracking information to save overheads. The dead reckoning‐based location service mechanism is evaluated against three known location dissemination service protocols: simple, distance routing effect algorithm for mobility (DREAM) and geographic region summary service (GRSS). The evaluation is done with geographic routing as an application. It is observed that dead reckoning significantly outperforms the other protocols in terms of packet delivery fraction. It also maintains low‐control overhead. Its packet delivery performance is only marginally impacted by increasing speed or noise in the mobility model, that affects its predictive ability. Mobile user location update and paging under delay constraints   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Wireless personal communication networks (PCNs) consist of a fixed wireline network and a large number of mobile terminals. These terminals are free to travel within the PCN coverage area without service interruption. Each terminal periodically reports its location to the network by a process calledlocation update. When a call for a specific terminal arrives, the network will determine the exact location of the destination terminal by a process calledterminal paging. This paper introduces a mobile user location management mechanism that incorporates a distance based location update scheme and a selective paging mechanism that satisfies predefined delay requirements. An analytical model is developed which captures the mobility and call arrival pattern of a terminal. Given the respective costs for location update and terminal paging, the average total location update and terminal paging cost is determined. An iterative algorithm is then used to determine the optimal location update threshold distance that results in the minimum cost. Analytical results are also obtained to demonstrate the relative cost incurred by the proposed mechanism under various delay requirements.  相似文献

Dynamic hierarchical mobility management strategy for mobile IP networks   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
One of the major challenges for the wireless network design is the efficient mobility management, which can be addressed globally (macromobility) and locally (micromobility). Mobile Internet protocol (IP) is a commonly accepted standard to address global mobility of mobile hosts (MHs). It requires the MHs to register with the home agents (HAs) whenever their care-of addresses change. However, such registrations may cause excessive signaling traffic and long service delay. To solve this problem, the hierarchical mobile IP (HMIP) protocol was proposed to employ the hierarchy of foreign agents (FAs) and the gateway FAs (GFAs) to localize registration operations. However, the system performance is critically affected by the selection of GFAs and their reliability. In this paper, we introduce a novel dynamic hierarchical mobility management strategy for mobile IP networks, in which different hierarchies are dynamically set up for different users and the signaling burden is evenly distributed among the network. To justify the effectiveness of our proposed scheme, we develop an analytical model to evaluate the signaling cost. Our performance analysis shows that the proposed dynamic hierarchical mobility management strategy can significantly reduce the system signaling cost under various scenarios and the system robustness is greatly enhanced. Our analysis also shows that the new scheme can outperform the Internet Engineering Task Force mobile IP hierarchical registration scheme in terms of the overall signaling cost. The more important contribution is the novel analytical approach in evaluating the performance of mobile IP networks.  相似文献

We investigate the notion of per-user integrated location and service management in personal communication service (PCS) networks by which a per-user service proxy is created to serve as a gateway between the mobile user and all client-server applications engaged by the mobile user. The service proxy is always colocated with the mobile user's location database such that whenever the MU's location database moves during a location handoff, a service handoff also ensues to colocate the service proxy with the location database. This allows the proxy to know the location of the mobile user all the time to reduce the network communication cost for service delivery. We investigate four integrated location and service management schemes. Our results show that the centralized scheme performs the best when the mobile user's SMR (service to mobility ratio) is low and CMR (call to mobility ratio) is high, while the fully distributed scheme performs the best when both SMR and CMR are high. In all other conditions, the dynamic anchor scheme is the best except when the service context transfer cost is high, under which the static anchor scheme performs the best. Through analytical and simulation results, we demonstrate that different users with vastly different mobility and service patterns should adopt different integrated location and service management methods to optimize system performance. Further, the best integrated scheme always performs better than the best decoupled scheme that considers location and service managements separately and management schemes that do not use any service proxy.  相似文献

Location management provides the guarantee to deliver a call to mobile user during the mobility of user and it is a key challenge in wireless cellular networks. In this paper, we are introducing a new index-based location management scheme. It is based on indexing of location update information at the home agent of network. A tuple of index will keep track of range of location update information and corresponding thread of it, connected to stack of information table. To register a new mobile user, the mobile switching centre will generate a new identification number with the help of mobile switching centre identification number and temporary mobile subscriber identity of subscriber. If, the identification number is with in the range of index then, the Care of Address of mobile subscriber is added to information table else, the index will be reconstruct based on new range of identification number. It has been observed that in proposed technique, the call setup delay and network overheads is reduces over the limitation of minor increment of registration delay. The analytical model and numerical result represents the effectiveness of proposed scheme over the existing schemes.  相似文献

The partition of location areas is designed to minimize the total costs of finding users' location and tracking their movement in personal communication networks (PCNs). A new scheme to partition and track mobile users and its implementation based on cellular architecture are proposed. According to the tracking strategy, the mobile station (MS) transmits only update messages at specific reporting cells, while the search for a mobile user is done at the vicinity of the cell to which the user has just reported. We use the cost analysis model to demonstrate the feasibility of updating and searching costs to reduce the amount of resources when using wireless channels. Simulations are performed to compare the performance of three schemes: always update, always search, and our new scheme  相似文献

A personal communications network (PCN) location tracking scheme called local anchoring is introduced which reduces the signalling cost as compared to the location management strategy proposed in the IS-41 standard. Local anchoring reduces the number of location registration messages between the home location register (HLR) and the visitor location registers (VLRs) in a way that location change is reported to a nearby VLR called the local anchor (LA) instead of to the HLR. This method successfully reduces the cost for location tracking when the call arrival rate is low relative to the mobility rate and the cost for location registration is high. A dynamic local anchoring mechanism is then introduced which dynamically selects the LA such that the expected cost for location registration and call delivery can be further reduced. It is demonstrated that the cost of dynamic local anchoring is always lower than or equal to that of the IS-41 scheme  相似文献
