A total of 850 cows distributed among 13 commercial Holstein herds were involved in this study to compare the effects of 2 different dry period (DP) management strategies on milk and component yields as well as body condition score (BCS) over complete lactations. Within each herd and every 2 mo, cows were assigned to a short (35 d dry; SDP) or conventional (60 d dry; CDP) DP management based on previous lactation 305-d milk yield, predicted calving interval, and parity: primiparous (n = 414) and multiparous (n = 436). Cows assigned to CDP were fed a far-off dry cow ration from dry-off until 21 d prepartum, and were then switched to a precalving ration. Cows assigned to SDP were fed the precalving ration throughout their DP. Rations were different across herds, but the late-lactation, precalving, and early lactation rations were identical for both treatment groups within each herd. Additional milk was obtained at the end of lactation from cows assigned to SDP due to the extended lactation. Average daily milk yield in the following lactation was not different between treatments for third- or greater-lactation cows, but was significantly decreased in second-lactation SDP cows. However, when expressed as energy-corrected milk, this difference was not significant. Although lower for primiparous than multiparous cows, body weight and BCS were not affected by DP management strategy. Milk production and BCS responses to treatments varied among herds. Results from the present study suggest that a short DP management strategy could be more appropriate for today's dairy cows, although not suitable for all cows or all herds.  相似文献

As part of a cross-sectional study of Norwegian Red Cattle, associations of lameness, lesions at the tarsus, claw shapes, claw lesions, and claw trimming with milk yield were examined. Fifty-five tie-stall herds and 57 free-stall herds were sampled by computerized systematic selection, and 2,665 cows were trimmed and limb and claw disorders recorded. After exclusions, 2,599 cows were included in this study. Monthly recordings of milk were extracted from the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System. Most claw lesions were mild (score 1). The prevalence of moderate and severe lesions (score 2 and 3) did not exceed 5% for any of the lesions. Associations with test-day milk yield were identified using regression analyses (Proc Mixed) with repeated measurements within lactation and herd as random effect. Lactation curves were fit to visualize differences in changes in milk yield throughout the lactation. Milk yield was generally higher in cows with lesions at the tarsus, heel-horn erosions, and hemorrhages of the white line and the sole than in cows without these lesions, whereas cows with dermatitis yielded less than cows without dermatitis. Cows in lactation 1 with corkscrewed claws had reduced milk yield, whereas cows in lactations 2 and above had increased milk yield compared with cows without corkscrewed claws in respective lactations. Cows in lactation 1 yielded 0.47 ± 0.15 kg and cows in later lactations yielded 0.51 ± 0.15 kg more milk on test days after claw trimming than they did before when adjusted for days in milk. In this study, where most disorders were mild, the most evident results were higher milk yield in cows with lesions at the tarsus, heel-horn erosions, and hemorrhages of the white line and the sole than in cows without these lesions. Jersey × Holstein crossbred (J×H) cows (n = 24) were compared with pure Holstein cows (n = 17) for body weight, body condition score, dry matter intake (DMI), and feed efficiency during the first 150 d of first lactation. Cows were housed in the University of Minnesota dairy facility at the St. Paul campus and calved from September 2004 to January 2005. The J×H cows were mated by artificial insemination with Montbeliarde bulls, and Holstein cows were mated by artificial insemination with Holstein bulls. Cows were weighed and body condition was scored every other week. Cows were individually fed a TMR twice daily, and feed refusals were measured once daily. The DMI of cows was measured daily and averaged across 7-d periods. Milk production and milk composition were from monthly Dairy Herd Improvement records. Best Prediction was used to calculate actual production (milk, fat, protein) for each cow from the 4th to 150th day of first lactation. The J×H cows had significantly less body weight (467 vs. 500 kg) and significantly higher body condition scores (2.90 vs. 2.76) than pure Holstein cows. The J×H cows had significantly less milk production (4,388 vs. 4,644 kg) during the 4th to 150th day of lactation than did pure Holstein cows. However, fat plus protein production during the first 150 d of lactation was not significantly different for J×H (302 kg) and Holstein (309 kg) cows. The J×H and pure Holstein cows did not differ significantly for daily DMI (22.0 vs. 22.7 kg, respectively), and the J×H (4.7%) and pure Holstein (4.5%) cows consumed similar DMI based on percentage of body weight. Consequently, feed efficiency for the 4th to 150th day of lactation did not differ for J×H and pure Holstein cows.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the association between mastitis events occurring during the previous lactation, the dry period, and the peripartum period on the incidence of early lactation mastitis in cows receiving ceftiofur hydrochloride or penicillin dihydrostreptomycin as intramammary dry cow antibiotic therapy. Cows (n = 402) from 2 large dairy farms in Central Florida were enrolled in the study at the time of dry-off processing and were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 dry cow therapies: ceftiofur hydrochloride or penicillin dihydrostreptomycin. Composite milk samples were collected at dry-off and after calving for bacteriological examination and somatic cell count. Peripartal health disorders were monitored during the first 30 d of lactation and included calving difficulty, metritis, ketosis, and left displaced abomasum. Milk production and individual somatic cell scores (SCS) were recorded monthly by the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. The main outcome variables were the risk of clinical mastitis during the first 30 and 60 d of lactation, and the risk of subclinical mastitis at the first 2 monthly Dairy Herd Improvement Association tests after calving (up to 70 d in milk). Additionally, the SCS and the presence of mastitis pathogens in milk at dry-off and at calving were analyzed. Explanatory variables consisted of events occurring during the previous lactation, at dry-off and during the dry period, at calving, and within the first 30 d after calving. Multiple events occurring during the previous lactation had a significant effect on the incidence of mastitis in the subsequent lactation. These events included low milk yield, intermediate lactation length, clinical mastitis, and lactation SCS average. Similarly, intramammary infections with environmental bacteria at dry-off increased the chances of clinical mastitis the first month after calving. Dry-off therapy had a significant effect on mastitis incidence; cows treated with ceftiofur hydrochloride had lower odds of having clinical and subclinical mastitis in the subsequent early lactation compared with cows treated with penicillin dihydrostreptomycin.  相似文献

The objective was to study the effects of body condition score (BCS) at calving on dairy performance, indicators of fat and protein mobilization, and metabolic and hormonal profiles during the periparturient period of Holstein-Friesian cows. Twenty-eight multiparous cows were classed according to their BCS (0 to 5 scale) before calving as low (BCS ≤2.5; n = 9), medium (2.75 ≤ BCS ≤ 3.5; n = 10), and high (BCS ≥3.75; n = 9), corresponding to a mean of 2.33, 3.13, and 4.17 points of BCS, and preceding calving intervals of 362, 433, and 640 d, respectively. Cows received the same diets based on preserved grass to allow ad libitum feed intake throughout the study, and lactation diet contained 30% of concentrate (dry-matter basis). Measurements and sampling were performed between wk −4 and 7 relative to calving. No significant effects were observed of BCS group on dry matter intake (kg/d), milk yield, BCS loss, plasma glucose, and insulin concentrations. The high-BCS group had the lowest postpartum energy balance and the greatest plasma concentrations of leptin prepartum, nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate postpartum, insulin-like growth factor 1, and milk fat content. Milk fat yield was greater for the high- than the low-BCS group (1,681 vs. 1,417 g/d). Low-BCS cows had the greatest concentration of medium-chain fatty acids (e.g., sum of 10:0 to 15:0, and 16:0), and the lowest concentration and secretion of preformed fatty acids (e.g., cis-9 18:1) in milk fat. Milk protein secretion was lowest in the low-BCS group, averaging 924, 1,051, and 1,009 g/d for low-, medium-, and high-BCS groups, respectively. Plasma 3-methylhistidine was greater in wk 1 and 2 postpartum compared with other time points, indicating mobilization of muscle protein. Plasma creatinine tended to be lower and the 3-methylhistidine: creatinine ratio was greater in low- compared with medium- and high-BCS cows, suggesting less muscle mass but more intense mobilization of muscle protein in lean cows. High-BCS cows were metabolically challenged during early lactation due to intense mobilization of body fat. Conversely, limited availability of body fat in low-BCS cows was associated with increased plasma indicators of body protein mobilization during the first weeks of lactation, and lower milk protein secretion. These results should be confirmed using an experimental approach where calving BCS variation would be controlled by design.  相似文献

Capturing urine and spreading it evenly across a paddock reduces the risk of nitrogen loss to the environment. This study investigated the effect of 16 h/d removal from pasture on the capture of urination events, milk production, pasture intake, and animal welfare from cows grazing fresh pasture in early and late lactation. Forty-eight Holstein-Friesian cows in early [470 ± 47 kg of body weight (BW); 35 ± 9 days in milk] and late (498 ± 43 kg of BW; 225 ± 23 days in milk) lactation were allocated to 3 treatment groups. Cows had access to pasture for either 4 h after each milking (2 × 4), for 8 h between morning and afternoon milkings (1 × 8), or for 24 h, excluding milking times (control). When not grazing, the 2 × 4 and 1 × 8 groups were confined to a plastic-lined loafing area with a woodchip surface. In early lactation, the proportion of urinations on pasture and laneways was reduced from 89% (control) to 51% (1 × 8) and 54% (2 × 4) of total urinations. The 1 × 8 cows ate less pasture [10.9 kg of dry matter (DM)/cow per day] than the control (13.6 kg of DM/cow per day) and 2 × 4 (13.0 kg of DM/cow per day) cows, which did not differ from each other. The 1 × 8 and 2 × 4 cows produced less milk (21 and 22 kg of milk/cow per day, respectively) compared with control cows (24 kg of milk/cow per day). There were no differences in BW or body condition score (BCS) change across treatment groups, with all groups gaining BW and BCS during the experimental period. In late lactation, there was no difference in pasture intake (mean = 8.8 kg of DM/cow per day), milk production (mean = 10 kg of milk/cow per day), and BW or BCS change (mean = 3.7 kg and −0.2 U/cow per week, respectively) between treatment groups. As in early lactation, urinations on pasture and laneways were reduced from 85% (control) to 56% (1 × 8) and 50% (2 × 4) of total urinations. These findings highlight an opportunity to maintain performance and welfare of grazing cows in early and late lactation while capturing additional urine. This can subsequently be spread evenly across pasture to minimize nitrogen loss to the environment.  相似文献

Two hundred fifty multiparous and primiparous cows were assigned to a study at approximately 70 d prepartum to determine the effect of trace mineral source on lactation performance, claw integrity, and fertility. Cows received treatments from 3 wk prepartum through wk 35 postpartum. Treatments consisted of 1) all supplemental Zn, Mn, Cu, and Co provided in sulfate form (Sulfate) and 2) 360 mg of Zn, 200 mg of Mn, 125 mg of Cu, and 12 mg of Co supplied daily by Sulfate minerals replaced with similar amounts of minerals supplied by Availa-4 (CTM). Individuals involved with daily animal care or data recording, or both, were blinded to treatment assignments. Cows from all treatments were housed in common pens, and treatments were dispensed to cows via a computerized feeder. All claws of cows were examined before treatment administration and at 16 and 36 wk postpartum by personnel trained in identifying claw lesions. Cows fed the CTM diet tended to produce more milk and energy-corrected milk than cows fed the Sulfate diet. Cows fed the CTM diet also produced more milk protein and solids (fat + protein) than cows fed the Sulfate diet. Replacing Sulfate minerals with those supplied by CTM decreased incidence of sole ulcers at wk 36 postpartum and tended to decrease incidence of interdigital dermatitis at wk 16 and 36 postpartum. Severity of heel erosion tended to be less for cows fed CTM than cows receiving the Sulfate diet. Despite first service conception rates tending to be greater for cows fed the Sulfate diet, there was no effect of treatment on rate of conception. A greater percentage of cows fed the Sulfate diet tended to be culled from the herd before wk 36 postpartum than cows fed the CTM diet. Replacing Sulfate minerals with CTM resulted in improved lactation performance and claw integrity.  相似文献

Multiparous Holstein cows (n = 300) were assigned to 1 of 2 milking frequency treatments at parturition. Cows were either milked 6 times (6×) or 3 times (3×) daily to determine effects on early lactation milk yields and subsequent lactation persistency with or without use of recombinant bST (rbST). Treatments included a control group milked 3× and 3 groups milked 6× for either the first 7, 14, or 21 days in milk (DIM). Those 4 groups of cows all received rbST starting at 63 DIM. The fifth treatment group was also milked 6× for the first 21 DIM but those cows received no rbST during the entire lactation. All cows returned to 3× milking after their respective treatment periods ended. Cows milked 3× tended to produce more milk (43.2 vs. 41.5 and 41.0 ± 1.1 kg/d) during the first 9 wk of lactation compared with cows milked 6× for 7 or 21 DIM, respectively. Group milk yields after wk 9 averaged 38.3 ± 0.7 kg/d and did not differ among various groups assigned to an increased milking frequency in early lactation. Percentages of milk fat (3.8 ± 0.12%) and protein (2.9 ± 0.06%) did not differ among treatments during the first 9 wk after calving. Early lactation milk yield (41.9 ± 1.2 kg/d) did not differ between the 2 groups of cows milked 6× for 21 DIM. However, cows subsequently administered rbST (at 63 DIM) produced more milk (38.8 vs. 34.2 ± 0.9 kg/d) from wk 10 to 44. The number of cows sent to the hospital during the 305-d trial for mastitis (97), digestive disorders (14), respiratory issues (9), lameness (22), or retained placenta (16), were not affected by treatments (χ2 = 0.49). Under the conditions of this commercial dairy herd in Arizona, increasing milking frequency to 6 times daily for 7 to 21 d at the start of lactation conditions did not increase milk yield nor improve lactation persistency.  相似文献

Dairy cow lameness is a serious animal welfare issue. It is also a significant cause of economic losses, reducing reproductive efficiency and milk production and increasing culling rates. The digital cushion is a complex structure composed mostly of adipose tissue located underneath the distal phalanx and has recently been phenotypically associated with incidence of claw horn disruption lesions (CHDL); namely, sole ulcers and white line disease. The objective of this study was to characterize digital cushion thickness genetically and to investigate its association with body condition score (BCS), locomotion score (LOCO), CHDL, and milk production. Data were collected from 1 large closely monitored commercial dairy farm located in upstate New York; 923 dairy cows were used. Before trimming, the following data were collected by a member of the research team: BCS, cow height measurement, and LOCO. Presence or not of CHDL (sole ulcer or white line disease, or both) was recorded at trimming. Immediately after the cows were hoof trimmed, they underwent digital sonographic B-mode examination for the measurement of digital cushion thickness. Factors such as parity number, stage of lactation, calving date, mature-equivalent 305-d milk yield (ME305MY), and pedigree information were obtained from the farm’s dairy management software (DairyCOMP 305; Valley Agricultural Software, Tulare, CA). Univariate animal models were used to obtain variance component estimations for each studied trait (CHDL, BCS, digital cushion thickness average, LOCO, height, and ME305MY) and a 6-variate analysis was conducted to estimate the genetic, residual, and phenotypic correlations between the studied traits. The heritability estimate of DCTA was 0.33 ± 0.09, whereas a statistically significant genetic correlation was estimated between DCTA and CHDL (−0.60 ± 0.29). Of the other genetic correlations, significant estimates were derived for BCS with LOCO (−0.49 ± 0.19) and ME305MY (−0.48 ± 0.20). Digital cushion thickness is moderately heritable and genetically strongly correlated with CHDL.  相似文献

Thirty-five multiparous Holstein cows were used to determine the role of mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT I) in liver on peripartal adaptations of fatty acid metabolism. From dry-off to parturition, cows were fed a diet at either ad libitum (n = 17) or restricted intake (RI, 80% of calculated requirements for net energy; n = 18). After parturition, all cows were fed a lactation diet. At 4 d in milk (DIM), cows underwent a physical examination and were classified as healthy (n = 15) or having at least one periparturient disorder (PD; n = 17). Cows in the healthy group were assigned to either a control (n = 6) group or a ketosis induction (KI; n = 9) group. Cows with periparturient disorders were assigned to a third (PDC; n = 17) group. Cows in control and PDC groups were fed for ad libitum intake. Cows in KI were fed at 50% of their respective intake at d 4 postpartum starting from 5 DIM and continuing to signs of clinical ketosis or until 14 DIM; cows then were returned to ad libitum intake. Liver was biopsied at −30 d, 1 d, at signs of clinical ketosis or 14 d, and 28 d relative to parturition. Mitochondria were isolated by differential centrifugation. Activity of CPT I was 5.4 and 7.6 nmol of palmitoylcarnitine formed per min/mg of protein for ad libitum and RI, respectively, at −30 DIM. Sensitivity of CPT I to its inhibitor, malonyl CoA, did not differ between ad libitum and RI cows. Differences in CPT I activity between ad libitum and RI were no longer significant at 1 DIM. Postpartum CPT I activity and malonyl CoA sensitivity at 1 DIM, onset of clinical ketosis or 14 DIM, and 28 DIM were not affected by prepartum intake (ad libitum vs. RI), postpartum health status (healthy vs. PD), or ketosis induction status (control vs. KI vs. PDC). Activity of CPT I was positively correlated with liver total lipid, liver triglyceride, liver triglyceride to glycogen ratio, and serum nonesterified fatty acids. Activity of CPT I and dry matter intake were not correlated. Prepartum intake affected prepartum CPT I activity but not malonyl CoA sensitivity. Neither induction of primary ketosis nor periparturient disorders greatly affected CPT I activity or sensitivity, which indicates that alterations of CPT I may not be a major factor in the etiology of primary ketosis or other periparturient disorders.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the risk of clinical mastitis in the first 120 d in lactation based on previous somatic cell count (SCC) history in a herd with a very low prevalence of contagious pathogens. A total of 218 cows from a university herd were enrolled at dry-off. Duplicate quarter milk samples were collected from all quarters at dry-off, postcalving (2 to 9 d in milk), and before treatment of all first cases of clinical mastitis that occurred during the first 120 d of the subsequent lactation. Quarter SCC statuses across the dry period were defined based on comparison of quarter SCC between the date of dry-off and the postcalving sampling periods. The relationship between the probability of developing clinical mastitis in the first 120 d of lactation and SCC status across the dry period and other explanatory variables was assessed using logistic regression. In the first 120 d postcalving, 68 first cases of clinical mastitis occurred in 47 cows. Of quarters that experienced a microbiologically positive clinical case, the same microorganism was never isolated from milk samples obtained at dry-off or consistently isolated from milk samples collected at all sampling periods. Coagulase negative staphylococci were the most prevalent pathogens isolated from subclinical intramammary infection, whereas gram-negative pathogens were the most common pathogen associated with clinical cases. Quarters that had at least 1 case of mastitis during the previous lactation were 4.2 times more likely to have a first case of clinical mastitis in the current lactation than quarters that did not have clinical mastitis in the previous lactation [odds ratio (OR) = 4.2 (1.8, 10.0)]. Quarters of cows of greater than fourth parity were 4.2 times more likely to have a first case of clinical mastitis than quarters of cows of second parity [OR = 4.2 (1.4, 10.0)]. Quarters with SCC ≥200,000 cells/mL at dry-off and postcalving were 2.7 times more likely to experience a first case of mastitis than quarters with SCC <200,000 cells/mL at both periods [OR = 2.7 (0.97, 7.67)].  相似文献

Data from 113 lactations across 76 cows between the years 2002 to 2004 were used to determine the effect of strain of Holstein-Friesian (HF) dairy cow and concentrate supplementation on milk production, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS; 1 to 5 scale) lactation profiles. New Zealand (NZ) and North American (NA) HF cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 levels of concentrate supplementation [0, 3, or 6 kg of dry matter (DM)/cow per d] on a basal pasture diet. The Wilmink exponential model was fitted within lactation (YDIM = a + b e(−0.05 × DIM) + c × DIM). The median variation explained by the function for milk yield was 86%, between 62 and 69% for milk composition, and 80 and 70% for BW and BCS, respectively. North American cows and cows supplemented with concentrates had greater peak and 270-d milk yield. Concentrate supplementation tended to accelerate the rate of incline to peak milk yield, but persistency of lactation was not affected by either strain of HF or concentrate supplementation. No significant strain by diet interaction was found for parameters reported. New Zealand cows reached nadir BCS 14 d earlier and lost less BW (22 kg) postcalving than NA cows. Concentrate supplementation reduced the postpartum interval to nadir BW and BCS, and incrementally increased nadir BCS. New Zealand cows gained significantly more BCS (i.e., 0.9 × 10−3 units/d more) postnadir than NA cows, and the rate of BCS replenishment increased linearly with concentrate supplementation from 0.5 × 10−3 at 0 kg of DM/d to 0.8 × 10−3 and 1.6 × 10−3 units/d at 3 and 6 kg of DM/d concentrates, respectively. Although there was no significant strain by diet interaction for parameters reported, there was a tendency for a strain by diet interaction in 270-d BCS, suggesting that the effect of concentrate supplementation on BCS gain was, at least partly, strain dependent.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of monopropylene glycol (MPG) supplementation on LH secretion, postpartum interval to first ovulation, and milk production in heifers calving with poor body condition score (BCS). Forty-seven heifers were allocated to 3 treatments: 1) heifers with high BCS (BCH; n = 13) that calved at a BCS of 3.4 (BCS scale of 1 to 5); 2) heifers with low BCS (BCL; n = 17) that calved at a BCS of 2.8; and 3) heifers with low BCS that calved at a BCS of 2.8 and were assigned to receive MPG supplementation (BCL + MPG; n = 17) and grazed pasture ad libitum. Monopropylene glycol was drenched (250 mL) twice daily for 16 wk after calving. Patterns of change in plasma LH were measured at 2 and 5 wk after calving. Pulsatile release of LH at 2 and 5 wk was greater in BCL + MPG and BCH cows compared with the BCL control cows. The BCL + MPG cows had lower NEFA concentrations than did the BCL cows during wk 1 to 6 after calving. At 12 wk postpartum, the proportion of cows cycling was 77, 82, and 28% for the BCH, BCL + MPG, and BCL treatments, respectively. Mean milk fat yield was greater for the BCH treatment during the first 12 wk postpartum compared with the BCL + MPG or BCL treatments, which did not differ from each other. Results of this study indicate that MPG supplementation reduced the interval from calving to first ovulation in heifers having poor body condition at calving.  相似文献

Ghrelin is an endogenous ligand of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor and a potential orexigenic agent in monogastrics and ruminants. Obestatin has been reported to have the opposite (anorexigenic) effect. Fifty one multiparous cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups (n = 17): a control group and 2 groups with cows continuously infused with 0.74 μmol/d of ghrelin (GHR group) or obestatin (OBE group) subcutaneously. Infusions began 21 d in milk, and treatments continued for 8 wk. Generalized linear models were used to determine the treatment effect on average daily and cumulative milk production and composition, and plasma ghrelin, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, leptin, nonesterified fatty acids, and glucose. Mixed models, with cow included as a repeated effect, were used to determine if treatment effects differed by week postcalving for milk production, body weight, and body condition score (BCS; scale 1 to 10). Parity, breed, week of the year at calving, treatment, week postcalving, and the 2 wk preexperimental average of each measure (covariate) were included as fixed effects. Treatment did not affect dry matter intake. Cows infused with GHR lost more BCS (−0.71 units) over the 8-wk study period than the control (−0.23 BCS units) cows, and on average were thinner than cows in either of the other 2 treatments (0.2 BCS units). Consistent with the extra BCS loss in GHR cows, plasma IGF-1, glucose, and leptin concentrations were reduced and plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations were greater in GHR cows. Despite a numerical tendency for GHR cows to produce more milk (1,779 kg) than control (1,681 kg) or OBE (1,714 kg) cows during the 8-wk period, milk production differences were not statistically different. However, the timing of the numerical separation of the lactation curves coincided with the significant changes in BCS, IGF-1, and leptin. Results indicate a positive effect of ghrelin infusion on lipolysis. Further research is required to determine if the numerical increase in milk production, which coincides with the increased negative energy balance, is real.  相似文献

Retained placenta (RP), defined as fetal membranes not being expelled within 24 h after calving, is a costly disease in multiparous dairy cows that has been linked to immune suppression, infections, elevated lipid mobilization, and depleted status of antioxidants including α-tocopherol, and that increases the risk of other diseases (OD) in early lactation. Early detection of cows at increased risk of developing RP, OD, or both in early lactation could improve treatment success and result in improved milk production and reproductive performance. To identify risk indicators of RP, OD, or both, we used a nested case-control design and compared multiparous dairy cows that developed RP (n = 32) with cows that remained healthy (H; n = 32) or cows that developed OD (n = 32) in early lactation. We compared peripartal body condition score (BCS) as well as serum concentrations of α-tocopherol, metabolites [β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), cholesterol, glucose, nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and urea N], haptoglobin, and macrominerals (i.e., calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus) on d −21, −14, −7, −3, −1, 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 postpartum. In addition, average serum concentrations were calculated for each cow for the last 3 wk prepartum, for 3 and 2 wk prepartum combined, for the last week prepartum, and for the morning after calving and compared between groups. The RP cows had lower BCS than the H or OD cows until 2 wk postpartum. During the prepartal periods, RP and OD cows had lower α-tocopherol concentrations (corrected or not for cholesterol concentration) and higher NEFA and BHBA concentrations than H cows. Thus, lower prepartal BCS could be an early predictor for RP risk, and lower α-tocopherol concentrations and higher NEFA and BHBA concentrations could be early predictors for disease.  相似文献

Jersey (JE) × Holstein (HO) crossbred cows (n = 76) were compared with pure HO cows (n = 73) for 305-d milk, fat, and protein production, somatic cell score (SCS), clinical mastitis, lifetime production, and body measurements during their first 3 lactations. Cows were in 2 research herds at the University of Minnesota and calved from September 2003 to June 2008. Best prediction was used to determine actual production for 305-d lactations as well as lifetime production (to 1,220 d in the herd after first calving) from test-day observations. During first lactation, JE × HO cows and pure HO cows were not significantly different for fat plus protein production; however, JE × HO cows had significantly lower fat plus protein production during second (−25 kg) and third (−51 kg) lactation than pure HO cows. Nevertheless, JE × HO cows were not significantly different from pure HO cows for lifetime production or lifetime SCS. The JE × HO cows were not significantly different from pure HO cows for SCS and clinical mastitis during first and second lactations; however, JE × HO cows tended to have higher SCS (3.79) than pure HO cows (3.40), but significantly lower (−23.4%) clinical mastitis during third lactation. The JE × HO cows had significantly less hip height, smaller heart girth, less thurl width, and less pin width than pure HO cows during the first 3 lactations. Furthermore, JE × HO cows had significantly less udder clearance from the ground and significantly greater distance between the front teats than pure HO cows during their first 3 lactations.  相似文献

The effects of gradual versus abrupt cessation of milking at dry-off in dairy cows are not well understood, but gradually reducing milk production in human mothers is known to reduce discomfort and milk leakage. This study compared the effects of abrupt versus gradual cessation of milking on milk leakage and dairy cow behavior. Holstein dairy cows were housed in groups of 6 and randomly assigned to either abrupt milk cessation (i.e., dry-off on d 0) or gradual milk cessation (i.e., skipped milkings beginning on d 0; dry-off on d 5). Four replicates were performed over time, for a total of 24 cows (mean ± SD; parity = 2.3 ± 1.2; milk production the day before d 0 = 24 ± 5 kg/d). Intramammary antibiotic, internal teat sealer, and external teat sealant were administered at dry-off. Measurements were taken from d −3 to 8 relative to dry-off. Three periods were identified for behavior data: baseline (d −3 to 1), period 1 (abrupt cows dry, gradual cows milking; d 0–4), and period 2 (all cows dry; d 5–8). Lying time was recorded with data loggers. Video scan samples (5-min intervals) were used to measure feeding time and motivation to be milked (i.e., standing at the pen's exit gate). Milk leakage was monitored every 20 min during the 2-h period following the milking times of 0500 and 1500 h after complete cessation of milking (period 1 for abrupt vs. period 2 for gradual). Composite milk samples were taken before dry-off (d −1, 0, and 5) and at the start of the next lactation (colostrum, 24 h and 7–10 d postcalving) to determine somatic cell score (SCS) and conduct bacteriological examinations in clinical mastitis cases. Regardless of treatment, dry-off resulted in reduced lying time [14.1 vs. 13.2 h/d; standard error of the difference (SED) = 0.2], reduced lying bouts (10.7 vs. 8.3 bouts/d; SED = 0.2), increased lying bout duration (1.4 vs. 1.7 h/bout; SED = 0.03) and increased feeding time (5.0 vs. 5.9 h/d; SED = 0.2). Compared with baseline, the odds of standing at the gate increased for abrupt cows (period 1: odds ratio = 6.2; 95% CI: 2.7–14.4; and period 2: odds ratio = 5.2; 95% CI: 1.8–14.6). No increase in time spent standing at the gate was noted in gradual cows. Frequency of leakage was greater in abrupt versus gradual cows (75 vs. 27%). Although the gradual treatment showed an increase in SCS over the 5 d of reduced milking frequency, both treatments showed an increase in SCS at calving and both returned to pre-experiment levels within 7 to 10 d after calving. This work demonstrates that gradually reducing milking frequency in high-producing cows results in reduced time spent anticipating milking and reduced milk leakage after dry-off.  相似文献

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to reevaluate the prevalence of digital dermatitis (DD) and associated risk factors in The Netherlands. Between May 2002 and December 2003, information about the presence or absence of DD lesions and other claw disorders on the hind claws of dairy cows in The Netherlands was collected by 20 hoof trimmers during trimming of all dairy cows in 383 herds. A questionnaire was used to acquire information regarding management and housing. Additional information, such as parity, breed, and stage of lactation of the cows, was provided by the Dutch Herd Book Organization. Digital dermatitis was present in 21.2% (SE = 0.3) of the study population (n = 22,454 cows). The herd prevalence varied from 0% (9.1% of the herds) to 83.0%. Most common was herd prevalence between 5 and 10%. The Holstein-Friesian breed was at higher risk for DD [odds ratio (OR) = 1.7] than was the Meuse Rhine IJssel breed (dual purpose breed). The risk for DD decreased with increasing parity. Cows at the peak of their lactation (30 to 60 d in milk) and in the third parity had higher odds for DD in comparison with cows that were later than 60 DIM. The presence of other claw disorders, such as interdigital dermatitis/heel horn erosion (IDHE), interdigital hyperplasia (HYP), and interdigital phlegmon, appeared to be predisposing for DD. Based on estimation of the population-attributable fraction, it was concluded that if IDHE, HYP, and interdigital phlegmon were not present among the study population, respectively, 32.2, 9.0, and 1.1% of the DD cases could have been prevented. The risk for DD slightly decreased when cows affected by IDHE had access to pasture. Because of the interrelation between infectious claw disorders, an effective intervention strategy against DD should focus on an integrated approach to the control of all infectious claw diseases. Cows trimmed >12 mo before the study (during regular trimming of the entire herd) were at lower risk for DD than were cows that were trimmed at shorter intervals. Animals that had >8 h of access to pasture were at higher risk for DD (OR = 1.6) compared with no access to pasture. Finally, cows in small-sized herds (<45 cows) affected with HYP were at lower risk (OR = 0.6) for DD than were cows affected with HYP in medium- and large-sized herds (60 to 85 cows per herd).  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effects of live yeast (LY) supplementation and body condition score (BCS, 1-5 scale) at calving on milk production, metabolic status, and rumen physiology of postpartum (PP) dairy cows. Forty Holstein-Friesian dairy cows were randomly allocated to a 2 × 2 factorial design and blocked by yield, parity, BCS, and predicted calving date. Treatments were body condition at calving (low for BCS ≤3.5 or high for BCS ≥3.75; n = 20) and supplementation with LY (2.5 and 10 g of LY/d per cow for pre- and postcalving, respectively; control, no LY supplementation; n = 20). The supplement contained 109 cfu of Saccharomyces cerevisiae/g (Yea-Sacc1026 TS, Alltech Inc., Nashville, TN). Daily milk yield, dry matter intake, milk composition, BCS, body weight, and backfat thickness were recorded. Blood samples were harvested for metabolite analysis on d 1, 5, 15, 25, and 35 PP. Liver samples were harvested by biopsy for triacylglycerol (TAG) and glycogen analysis on d 7 precalving, and on d 7 and 21 PP. Rumen fluid was sampled by rumenocentesis for all cows on d 7 and 21 PP. Supplementation with LY had no effect on milk yield, dry matter intake, rumen fluid pH, or blood metabolites concentration of dairy cows with high or low BCS at calving. Feeding LY increased rumen acetate proportion and protozoal population, tended to increase liver glycogen, and decreased rumen ammonia nitrogen during early lactation. Over-conditioned cows at calving had greater body reserve mobilization and milk production and lower feed intake, whereas cows with a moderate BCS at calving had greater feed intake, lower concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids and β-hydroxybutyrate, lower liver TAG and TAG:glycogen ratio, and faster recovery from body condition loss. Additionally, the data suggest that concentrations of liver enzymes in blood might be used as an indicator for liver TAG:glycogen ratio. Results indicate that in the case of this experiment, where the control treatment was associated with an acceptable rumen pH, feeding yeast did not significantly improve indicators of energy status in dairy cows.  相似文献
