For a representative sample of 149 accredited doctoral programs, 3 types of outcomes are reported: activities of students, time to degree, and employment settings of graduates. Comparisons of activities on the basis of program specialty area yielded a difference only for the activity of providing professional services (with clinical?>?counseling?>?school). Comparisons on the basis of degree type (PhD, PsyD) yielded differences for all activities except providing professional services, with PhD students and faculty reporting higher median levels of involvement. Students in PhD programs require significantly longer (approximately 1.5 years) to complete their degrees than do PsyD program students. Graduates' employment settings tend to be consistent with the specialty area of their doctoral programs with interesting shifts from initial to subsequent employment. Recommendations are made for expanding outcome assessment of graduate education and training in professional psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

We use data from the 1996-1997 Liaison Committee on Medical Education Annual Medical School Questionnaire, which had a 100% response rate, to describe medical education programs in the United States. In the 1996-1997 academic year, there were 95 568 full-time medical school faculty members, a 4.5% increase from 1995-1996. In clinical departments, the largest increases were in emergency medicine (a 29% increase from 1995-1996) and family medicine (a 13% increase). Of all full-time faculty members in clinical departments, 76.9% have an MD or DO as the highest degree, 4.5% have both an MD and PhD, 13.9% have a PhD, and 4.7% have an academic or professional bachelor's or master's degree as their final degree. The total number of applicants for the class entering in 1996 was 46968 (0.8% increase from 1995), while the number of first-time applicants decreased 1% from 1995. First-year medical students who were members of underrepresented minority groups numbered 2236, a 4% decrease from 1995. In 1996-1997, the total number of medical students was 66712 (0.3% less than in 1995-1996). For students graduating during the 1995-1996 academic year, 13% took longer than 4 years to complete the program. There were 47 medical schools that reported that 1 or more hospitals used for required clinical clerkships had changed ownership, merged, or closed during 1996. Medical schools used an average of 6 (range, 1-36) hospitals for core clinical clerkship. Ninety-five schools required a passing grade on Step 1 of the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) for promotion or graduation; 54 schools required a passing grade on Step 2 of the USMLE.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) commissioned an emergency medicine (EM) faculty salary and benefit survey for all 1995 Residency Review Committee in Emergency Medicine (RRC-EM)-accredited programs using the SAEM third-generation survey instrument. Responses were collected by SAEM and blinded from the investigators. POPULATION: Seventy-six of 112 (68%) accredited programs responded, yielding data for 1,032 full-time faculty among the four Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) regions. METHODS: Blinded program and individual faculty data were entered into a customized version of Filemaker Pro, a relational database program with a built-in statistical package. Salary data were sorted by 115 separate criteria such as program regions, faculty title, American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) certification, academic rank, years postresidency, program size, and whether data were reported to AAMC. Demographic data from 132 categories were analyzed and included number of staff and residents per shift, number of intensive care unit (ICU) beds, obstacles to hiring new staff, and specific type and value of fringe benefits offered. Data were compared with those from the 1990 and 1992 SAEM and the 1995-96 AAMC studies. RESULTS: Mean salaries were reported as follows: all faculty, $158,100; first-year faculty, $131,074; programs reporting data to AAMC, $152,198; programs not reporting data to AAMC, $169,251. Mean salaries as reported by AAMC region: northeast, $155,909; south, $155,403; midwest, $172,260; west, $139,930. Mean salaries as reported by program financial source: community, $175,599; university, $152,878; municipal, $141,566. CONCLUSIONS: Reported salaries for full-time EM residency faculty continue to rise. Salaries in programs reporting data to the AAMC are considerably lower than those not reporting. The gap between ABEM-certified and non-ABEM-certified faculty continues to widen. Residency-trained faculty are now shown to earn more than non-residency-trained faculty. Significant regional differences in salaries have been present in all three SAEM surveys.  相似文献

Enrichment programs to create a pipeline to biomedical science careers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The Student Educational Enrichment Programs at the Medical College of Georgia in the School of Medicine were created to increase underrepresented minorities in the pipeline to biomedical science careers. Eight-week summer programs are conducted for high school, research apprentice, and intermediate and advanced college students. There is a prematriculation program for accepted medical, dental, and graduate students. Between 1979 and 1990, 245 high school students attended 12 summer programs. Of these, 240 (98%) entered college 1 year later. In 1986, after eight programs, 162 (68%) high school participants graduated from college with a baccalaureate degree, and 127 responded to a follow-up survey. Sixty-two (49%) of the college graduates attended health science schools, and 23 (18%) of these matriculated to medical school. Of college students, 504 participated in 13 summer programs. Four hundred (79%) of these students responded to a questionnaire, which indicated that 348 (87%) of the 400 entered health science occupations and/or professional schools; 179 (45%) of these students matriculated to medical school. Minority students participating in enrichment programs have greater success in gaining acceptance to college and professional school. These data suggest that early enrichment initiatives increase the number of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical science pipeline.  相似文献

A survey addressing training provided in the area of substance abuse was mailed to all 160 doctoral clinical psychology programs provisionally and fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). A total of 95 replies were received (59%). This study was conducted to ascertain whether levels of doctoral training in this area have changed appreciably since comparable surveys by J. A. Selin and S. Svanum (1981) and B. Lubin et al (1986). Because of the considerable increase in number of APA-accredited PsyD programs since the previous 2 surveys, it was also possible to compare relative levels of training in substance abuse in PhD, PsyD, and combined PhD/PsyD programs. Survey results did not suggest that substance abuse training either has changed markedly over time or differs substantially across types of degree programs. Results of a survey of 153 institutions with graduate programs in psychology indicates the majority of schools with PhD programs do not offer a separate master's degree. Few colleges, and none of the top-ranking universities, expressed great interest in PhD applicants with master's degrees from other institutions. Most respondents stated these transfer students would be credited with a limited amount of course work or treated as if they had a BA degree. It is concluded that the master's degree may slow the progress of students seriously considering a PhD in psychology, and may actually be a limiting factor for acceptance in doctoral programs, particularly in prestigious schools. Universities should deemphasize the master's degree as part of doctoral training and provide terminal master's programs which prepare students for immediate professional or subprofessional employment. The authors review curricular characteristics of combined baccalaureate-M.D. programs at 28 U.S. medical schools from 1961, when the first programs started, until 1991-92. Initially, in the 1960s, these programs were created (1) to offer talented high school graduates an accelerated track leading to the baccalaureate and M.D. degrees, (2) to reduce educational expenses, (3) to improve education in the humanities, and (4) to attract outstanding students into careers in medicine. In the 1970s these objectives were modified to address national health care needs, particularly the need to graduate more physicians more quickly, especially primary care physicians for underserved areas. In the 1980s the objectives were broadened to achieve more diverse goals, including emphases on the humanities, community medicine, and biotechnology, in addition to the continued stress on the education of primary care physicians.  相似文献

Using national databases of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the authors have examined reasons for the rising indebtedness of U.S. medical students, looking across the past decade at the influence of tuition and fees (tuition-fees) alone and the total costs of attending school, the effects of the changing demographics of medical school enrollments and lengthened graduation times, the relationship between the availability of school-funded scholarships and the amount of student loan disbursements, the pattern of student financial aid, and the reliance on borrowing to cover the costs of medical education. In constant dollars, the average indebtedness of students graduating from public schools increased 59.2% between 1985 and 1995, and that for graduates of private schools increased 64.2%. The fraction of graduates bringing debt with them when they entered medical school declined from 42.1% in 1985 to 33.6% in 1995. Premedical debt as a fraction of total debt declined at public schools from 9% in 1985 to 7% in 1995, and at private schools from 7.8% in 1985 to 5.9% in 1995. For public schools, tuition-fees increased 60.1% between 1985 and 1995, and average medical school debt increased 60.9%; for private schools, tuition-fees increased 30.1% over that period, while average medical school debt increased 66.2%. On average, public school graduates accrued debt greater than their four-year tuition-fee payments, while the average debt accrued by private school graduates was less than tuition-fee amounts. In 1995, graduates of public schools had debt accumulations representing 62% of the average total cost of attendance (tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, and living expenses), and the indebtedness of private school graduates was 55% of the average total cost, findings suggesting that total costs were the stronger driver of the amounts borrowed. On a national scale, the influences on medical school debt of longer graduation times, the growing number of women students, greater racial-ethnic diversity, and the admission of more older students age were negligible or small. The average parental income, adjusted to constant dollars, actually increased between 1985 and 1995. For public schools, the aggregate amounts of student aid have climbed at a steeper rate than schools' tuition-fee revenues during the past decade. For public schools, tuition-fee revenues rose 66.7% between 1985 and 1995, while the amount of loans to students at public schools increased 92.7%. For private schools, tuition-fee revenues went up 36.5%, and the amount of loans to students rose 57.9% during the same period. Federal Stafford Loans represented the major financing source, increasing from 71.5% of public schools' tuition-fee revenue in 1985 to 92.2% in 1995, and from 23% of private schools' tuition-fee revenue in 1985 to 38% in 1995. Over the decade, scholarship support kept pace with tuition-fee increases at public schools, but lagged behind the increases at private schools. The recent escalation of student debt has coincided with the lifting of the federal loan borrowing limits under the Higher Education Act. In parallel, entering medical students have declared their intentions to rely more heavily on loans as a means of financing. These findings, although based on national data and trends, provide a framework for exploration of the factors affecting educational costs and financing at individual medical schools. The importance of doing so is mounting, as students may be throwing caution to the winds in the more favorable climate for borrowing, ignoring indicators of changing practice opportunities and incomes ahead.  相似文献

A formal training program in wound repair entitled "Scientific Basis of Wound Closure Techniques" has been developed and is accredited by the Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation. This course is now available at no cost to medical schools, residencies, and continuing education programs for graduate physicians. A manual with its complementing videotape allow the course participant to gain the necessary psychomotor skills to repair wounds. Evaluation of the course taken by third-year medical students and first-year residents demonstrates a high level of satisfaction. After instituting the course, there was a noticeable change in the types of barriers, instruments, and wound closure techniques practiced in our emergency department.  相似文献

Used 4 editions of Graduate Study in Psychology published in the 1970's to determine changes in graduate psychology departments and students. General department characteristics indicate that number of departments increased 52% (mostly in master's programs). Application and acceptance data are presented, as are the characteristics of 1st-yr students. There has been a decline in mean number of applications to programs. The effect of American Psychological Association accreditation was assessed by comparing accredited and nonaccredited doctoral programs. Results show that accredited programs received more applications than nonaccredited ones. (8 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Each fall the APA Education and Training Board sends to every graduate department with an approved program in clinical or in counseling psychology a detailed questionnaire. This questionnaire asks for information about the number of faculty members in the graduate training program, the number of full-time and part-time graduate students, the number of persons admitted to candidacy for the PhD, the number of PhDs granted the preceding year, and the number of graduate students admitted. This article presents a summary of the data obtained via these questionnaires. The authors suggest that for more precise information, a more complete questionnaire with carefully defined categories of training areas or subject matter would need to be answered by graduate departments, including both those with approved programs and those without them. Accreditation refers to the process by which an organization or agency formally recognizes that a college or university, or a program of instruction in a college or university, has met certain qualifications or standards. The purpose of this system is to maintain quality among the accredited institutions or programs. It is basic to an understanding of the unique accrediting function in psychology to recognize that psychology is the only discipline within the traditional graduate school of arts and sciences which has, thus far, attempted formal accreditation of the PhD degree. In order better to understand the issues as well as the present status of accreditation in graduate education in psychology, we will review briefly the historical development of accreditation and will sketch the current operational procedures. OBJECTIVES: To use existing data sources to refine prior estimates of the U.S. emergency medicine (EM) workforce and to estimate effects of proposed changes in the U.S. health care system on the EM workforce. METHODS: Relevant data were extracted from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) 1995 Membership Activity Report, the American Medical Association (AMA) publication "1995/96 Physician Characteristics and Distribution in the U.S.," the American Hospital Association (AHA) 1994 hospital directory, a written survey of each state's medical licensing board and state medical society, and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) annual activity report for 1995. These data were used to project workforce supply and demand estimates applicable to workforce models. RESULTS: None of the available information sources had complete data on the number and distribution of emergency physicians (EPs) currently practicing in the United States. Extrapolating the limited reliable statewide EP numbers to make nationwide projections reveals a shortage of EPs needed to fully staff the nation's existing EDs. At least 22 states had an average ratio of < 5 EPs per existing ED. Additional national projections incorporating a decreasing number of U.S. EDs indicate that the current annual number of EM residency graduates will not eliminate the deficit of EPs for at least several decades, given that projected numbers of retiring EPs annually will soon equal the total annual EM residency graduate production. CONCLUSIONS: Although the current data on EPs in practice in the United States are incomplete, the authors project a relative shortage of EPs. More accurate and complete information on the numbers and distribution of EPs in America is needed to improve workforce projections.  相似文献

In 1994, the AAMC surveyed the 126 U.S. medical schools to obtain data on live-animal use in the undergraduate medical curriculum. The questions focused entirely on the use of live animals in teaching laboratories that are either required or optional parts of the undergraduate medical curriculum. Seventy-seven of the 125 responding schools used live animals in one or more courses; of the required courses, animals were most often used in physiology courses (49 schools), followed by surgical clerkships (21) and pharmacology courses (13). Although these data show that the majority of schools used live animals in their curricula, the data also show that the majority of schools did not use live animals as part of the teaching of any specific course of discipline in 1994. The animals most often used were dogs (54 schools) and pigs (12). Forty-three of the 77 schools that used live animals offered a variety of alternatives to their use. The respondents' data indicate a steady decline in the number of schools using live animals in teaching labs since before 1982. The reasons most often reported for discontinuing live-animal use were expense, changes in curriculum or curriculum focus, and lack of time, faculty, or space. Several other reasons were also listed, but live animals' value in teaching was seldom a factor. Only 15 schools indicated they had experienced harassment, protests, or legal actions arising from their use of live animals in the previous two years.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The diversification and proliferation of doctoral programs in clinical psychology call for their periodic comparative analysis to inform prospective applicants, their advisors, and the entire field. The authors surveyed directors of the 232 American Psychological Association (APA)–accredited doctoral programs in clinical psychology (98% response) regarding application numbers, acceptance rates, financial assistance, and credentials of incoming students. Results are summarized for all clinical programs and then separately for 6 types of programs along the practice–research continuum: freestanding PsyD, university professional school PsyD, university department PsyD, practice-oriented PhD, equal-emphasis PhD, and research-oriented PhD. Lower acceptance rates and higher Graduate Record Examination scores were strongly associated with programs oriented toward more research training; for example, research-oriented PhD programs admitted far fewer applicants (7% vs. 50%) than did freestanding PsyD programs. Freestanding PsyD programs awarded significantly less full financial assistance to incoming students (1% vs. 89%) and required 1 less year to complete than did PhD programs. Overall, PhD-level students were more likely to secure an APA or Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers internship than were PsyD students. The authors conclude with observations about the historical changes and heightened differentiation of doctoral training in clinical psychology.
