Contrasted, the performance on learning-set task of 20 normal and 20 brain-damaged Ss of comparable verbal intelligence. An analysis of variance showed that the normals were superior to the brain damaged in improvement over repeated trials of the same problem and over blocks of similar problems. The normals made fewer errors of perseverative type, repetitive type, and made fewer incorrect choices after a rewarded correct choice. In the normal group, commission of the latter 2 errors was related to verbal intelligence, with no such relationship being found for the brain-damaged Ss. Inhibin, a dimeric gonadal glycoprotein, inhibits the production and/or secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The major species currently recognized are inhibin A (alphabeta A subunit) and inhibin B (alphabeta B subunit). In men, inhibin B seems to be the physiologically important form of inhibin. Therefore we measured serum inhibin B using a new two-site immunoenzymatic assay in 14 men (mean +/- SEM age, 34.5 +/- 0.7 years) with sperm counts >20 x 10(6)/ ml, in 35 men (mean +/- SEM age, 36.4 +/- 1.3 years) with oligozoospermia (sperm count <20 x 10(6)/ml) and in men with azoospermia (three orchidectomized men, three men with Klinefelter's syndrome, 10 men with Kallmann's syndrome). We compared inhibin B concentrations with serum FSH and sperm concentrations. In men with normal sperm concentrations (44.7 +/- 6.4 x 10(6)/ml), the concentration of inhibin was 223 +/- 18 pg/ml and of FSH 5.0 +/- 0.7 IU/l; in patients with low sperm concentrations (3.7 +/- 0.8 x 10(6)/ml), the concentration of inhibin B was 107 +/- 12 pg/ml and of FSH 12.2 +/- 1.5 IU/l. In all patients, except those with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism, the relationship between inhibin B and FSH concentrations was inverse (r = -0.69, P < 0.0001). In all patients the sperm concentration was positively correlated with inhibin B concentrations (r = 0.70, P < 0.0001) and negatively correlated with FSH concentrations (r = -0.37, P < 0.01). We conclude that inhibin B may be a marker of exocrine testicular function and could offer improved diagnosis and treatment modalities for male infertility.  相似文献

Self-esteem lability (SEL), defined as daily event-related variability in state self-esteem, and low trait self-esteem (TSE) were assessed among 205 male and female undergraduates who were currently depressed, previously depressed (PD), and never depressed (ND). SEL scores were derived for the effect of positive, negative, and combined events on state self-esteem over 30 days. Consistent with psychodynamic and cognitive theories, SEL was found to be a better index of depression proneness than TSE. PD Ss showed higher lability on all SEL scores than ND controls but did not differ from controls on TSE. Ss were reassessed 5 mo later, and new cases showed higher premorbid SEL than ND controls but did not differ from controls on premorbid TSE. SEL at Time 1 was found to increase risk for depression at Time 2 among Ss reporting high life stress at Time 2. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed. As part of a study of mucous transport in the airways, tantalum bronchography was performed on 13 normal, asymptomatic men who had normal findings on pulmonary function studies. Most of the subjects demonstrated some of the bronchographic features which have been regarded as specific for chronic bronchitis. Eight men showed opacification of the ducts of mucous glands; 12 had visible secretions in the airways; three had moderate-to-marked irregularity of airways. The clearance of tantalum from the airways in all but two subjects was more rapid than anticipated and thus could not be correlated with the bronchographic features of chronic bronchitis. Two subjects who previously had symptoms of respiratory tract infection showed markedly delayed peripheral airway clearance of tantalum. The bronchographic features of chronic bronchitis can be seen in normal subjects or may indicate airway abnormalities that are not manifested functionally.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of exercise training on prepubertal children's (ET, N = 28) lipid-lipoprotein profile, relative to a maturity matched control group (CON, N = 20). METHODS: Training for ET involved stationary cycling for 30 min, 3 times.wk-1 for 12 wk, at 79.3 +/- 1.2% (mean +/- SD) peak heart rate (HR). Controls maintained their usual lifestyle pattern. Plasma concentrations of total triacylglycerol (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (HDL-C) were determined pre- and postintervention. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL)- cholesterol (LDL-C) was subsequently estimated from these concentrations, and the ratios TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C were also calculated. There were no pretest differences (P > 0.05) for any of these blood analytes between groups. The following, potentially, confounding variables were also measured: peak VO2, percent body fat (%BF), dietary composition, and habitual physical activity. These variables, with pretest HDL-C, were included as covariates in two-way split plot ANCOVA analyses. Dietary variables were not included as covariates as they were not related to any of the blood analytes. RESULTS: There were no differences over time or between groups for TG and TC (P > 0.05). LDL-C decreased in ET (-10.2%) but remained unchanged in CON (0.3%) over the intervention period (P < 0.05). HDL-C increased in ET (9.3%) but decreased in CON (-8.9%) (P < 0.01). A similar, but inverted, pattern of change (P < 0.01) was revealed for both ratios, TC/HDL-C (-11.6% vs 6.3%, ET and CON, respectively), and LDL-C/HDL-C (-17.2% vs 8.0%, ET and CON, respectively). The favorable alterations in the lipid-lipoprotein profile for ET were independent of alterations in peak VO2 (group x time interaction, P < 0.05), %BF (main effect time, P < 0.01), and habitual physical activity (group x time interaction, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the favorable alterations in the lipoprotein profile seen in this study would suggest that it is possible to influence the prepubertal lipoprotein profile independent of alterations in confounding variables such as body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, and habitual physical activity.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The value of detecting coronary artery calcification (CAC), by cardiac imaging, for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in asymptomatic middle-aged men has been demonstrated. However, the incidence of CAC increases with age. The functional significance of CAC remains unknown in asymptomatic elderly men. The purpose of this study is to explore whether CAC in asymptomatic aging men signifies the presence of cardiovascular dysfunction during exercise. DESIGN: This study was designed to address whether elderly asymptomatic men, selected because they have CAC, have reduced exercise tolerance due to functionally significant CAD. Participants and setting: Thirty-eight asymptomatic male volunteers (ages 50 to 75 years, mean [+/-SD] 64+/-7 years) with a normal resting ECG and at least one coronary risk factor, in a population study. Nineteen subjects had CAC detected by digital subtraction fluoroscopy in at least two major coronary arteries, and 19 subjects had no identifiable CAC. METHODS AND RESULTS: Each subject underwent a symptom-limited incremental exercise test with 12-lead ECG monitoring and respiratory gas analysis. Four indexes of exercise oxygen transport were evaluated: peak oxygen uptake (VO2), lactic acidosis threshold, peak VO2/heart rate ratio, and VO2 relative to a work rate increase. Eleven of 38 subjects (28%) were found to have reduced oxygen transport, which was defined as an abnormal reduction in more than two of the above four indexes of oxygen transport. Five of the 11 subjects with reduced oxygen transport had CAC, and 6 subjects did not (not significant). Only one subject with CAC had exercise ST depression. CONCLUSION: Significant CAC in asymptomatic men over age 50 does not signify exercise limitation due to CAD.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that blood plasma levels of 17alpha, 20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) and 17alpha, 20beta, 21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20beta-S) increase in striped bass (Morone saxatilis) undergoing final oocyte maturation (FOM). Both hormones are produced by ovarian fragments undergoing hCG-induced germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) in vitro. In the present study, we investigated binding of DHP and 20beta-S to ovarian membranes from striped bass undergoing FOM. Saturable binding sites for DHP were not detected. Saturation of 20beta-S binding sites with 5 nM [3H]20beta-S occurred within 40 min at 0 degrees C (at 3 min, half of the maximum specific binding of steroid was calculated to have occurred), and the binding was pH-dependent. Scatchard analyses revealed the presence of a single class of high-affinity (dissociation constant [Kd] = 1.4 +/- 0.2 nM), limited-capacity (estimated concentration [Bmax] = 2.7 +/- 0.3 pmol/g ovary) 20beta-S binding sites on membranes from striped bass ovaries undergoing FOM. In contrast, only low levels of specific binding (Bmax < 0.04 pmol/g tissue) were detected on membranes from testes, liver, brain, and muscle. Ovarian membranes prepared from vitellogenic females also had low levels (Bmax < 0.1 pmol/g ovary) of specific 20beta-S binding, less than 5% of that found during FOM. Results of competition assays showed that DHP was approximately 250 times less effective than 20beta-S for displacing 20beta-S from ovarian membranes. In contrast, 20beta, 21-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one was a very effective competitor, although it is only a weak inducer of oocyte GVBD in vitro. Of several other steroids tested, only progesterone showed affinity for the 20beta-S binding site within a physiological range of concentrations. Taken together with previous studies of striped bass FOM, these findings indicate that 20beta-S is the oocyte maturation-inducing steroid hormone in striped bass.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that a greater proportion of women than men react to methacholine challenge and investigate the possible reasons for any differences observed, we recruited 495 subjects 20 to 44 yr of age (50.9% male) in Paris and 304 subjects (51.3% male) in Montpellier (France), as part of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. The proportion of responders (PD20 < or = 4 mg methacholine) was 33.7% in women and 11.9% in men (odds ratio = 3.8; 95% confidence interval = 2.4-6.0) in Paris and 43.2% in women and 29.5% in men (odds ratio = 1.8; 95% confidence interval = 1.1-2.9) in Montpellier. These differences could not be explained by asthma, respiratory symptoms, atopy, or lung function parameters. In stepwise logistic regressions including sex, asthma, and asthma-like symptoms, nasal allergies, atopy, baseline FEV1, FEV1%pred, FVC, and FEV1%FVC, the odds-ratios for the effect of female sex on PD20 < or = 4 mg methacholine were 5.2 (3.0-9.0) in Paris and 2.2 (1.2-3.8) in Montpellier. Reacting to low doses of methacholine (PD20 < or = 0.5 mg) was associated with asthma and atopy in both men and women. In contrast, reacting to doses between 0.5 and 4 mg was associated with asthma and atopy only in men and with heavy tobacco consumption only in women. We conclude that the excess of hyperresponsiveness in women is not due to their having smaller lung size or airway caliber than men and may be related to a greater susceptibility to smoking.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the reported meal patterns between obese and normal weight men. DESIGN: A dietary survey, by means of 12 repeated telephone-administered 24-hour dietary recalls, was conducted in obese and normal weight men. The study period was three months with all seven days of the week included. The contribution of intake types to the reported daily energy intake (EI) was studied as well as the circadian distribution of EI and the reported number of intakes. SUBJECTS: 86 obese men (BMI 37.7 +/- 4.4 kg/m2, mean +/- SD) from the waiting list of the outpatient clinic completed the study altogether with 61 normal weight men (BMI 23.0 +/- 1.9 kg/m2), randomly selected from the Stockholm County Census Bureau. All men were 20-60 years old. RESULTS: Results were analyzed for Group A = all men who completed the study and for Group B = the men who exceeded the CUT-OFF 1 limit for energy intake (reasonably true report as defined by Goldberg). The obvious under-reporters amounted to 73% of the obese and to 28% of the normal weight men. The meal patterns were similar for the obese and the normal weight men. The greatest contributors to EI in both groups were cooked meals, sandwich meals, snacks and breakfast-like meals. The circadian eating pattern was mainly the same in both obese and normal weight men. The reported number of intakes was 5.3 (median) per day in all obese men vs 5.6 in all the controls (P = 0.02), and in Group B 5.3 s 5.9 (P = 0.16) intakes. No specific "obese eating style' could be detected in this study.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Elevated plasma endothelin (ET)-1 levels have been described in insulin-resistant states such as syndrome X, obesity, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and in some studies in essential hypertension. To investigate whether increases in circulating ET-1 to levels observed in insulin-resistant states can modulate insulin levels and/or insulin sensitivity in humans, we assessed these variables during low, non-pressor-dose ET-1 compared with placebo infusion. DESIGN: In a randomized, single blind, crossover design, 10 lean normotensive male subjects received either an intravenous infusion of subpressor doses of ET-1 dissolved in polygeline or a control infusion of polygeline only (placebo). Using dynamic assessment by the minimal model approach with the modified frequent sampling intravenous glucose tolerance test (FSIGT) the following and other parameters were measured: insulin sensitivity; acute insulin response to glucose (AIR(G)) calculated as the average of the three peak values between 2 and 5 min after injection of glucose from which the basal insulin levels were subtracted; the initial area under the curve (AUC(1-19)) from insulin values between time 0 and 19 min and the first-phase insulin secretion (phi1) from insulin kinetics parameters. RESULTS: ET-1 infusion reduced AIR(G) (to 34.85 +/- 4.27 compared with 49.3 +/- 6.9 microU/ml during placebo, P=0.017) and the acute C-peptide response to glucose (to 2.33 +/- 0.41 compared with 3.1 +/- 0.44 ng/ml, P=0.018), decreased plasma insulin levels during the FSIGT compared with placebo (analysis of variance P<0.0001) and decreased the AUC(1-19) (to 2.1 +/- 0.2 compared with 2.9 +/- 0.3 U/l per 20 min, P<0.01) while phi1 tended to be lower. S1 measured during ET-1 infusion was unaltered (11.11 +/- 1.91 x 10(-4) versus 10.88 +/- 2.11 10(-4)/min per mU per l, NS). CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that an increase in circulating ET-1 to levels observed in insulin-resistant states acutely diminishes the insulin secretory response but does not significantly modify insulin sensitivity.  相似文献

The mechanism by which acute insulin administration alters VLDL apolipoprotein (apo) B subclass metabolism and thus plasma triglyceride concentration was evaluated in 7 normolipidemic healthy men on two occasions, during a saline infusion and during an 8.5-hour euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp (serum insulin, 490 +/- 30 pmol/L). During the insulin infusion, plasma triglycerides decreased by 22% (P < .05), and serum free fatty acid decreased by 85% (P < .05). The plasma concentration of VLDL1 apo B fell 32% during the insulin infusion, while that of VLDL2 apo B remained constant. A bolus injection of [3-(2)H]leucine was given on both occasions to trace apo B kinetics in the VLDL1 and VLDL2 subclasses (Svedberg flotation rate, 60-400 and 20-60, respectively), and the kinetic basis for the change in VLDL levels caused by insulin was examined using a non-steady-state multicompartmental model. The mean rate of VLDL1 apo B synthesis decreased significantly by 35% (P < .05) after 0.5 hour of the insulin infusion (523 +/- 87 mg/d) compared with the saline infusion (808 +/- 91 mg/d). This parameter was allowed to vary with time to explain the fall in VLDL1 concentration. After 8.5 hours of hyperinsulinemia, the rate of VLDL1 apo B synthesis was 51% lower (321 +/- 105 mg/d) than during the saline infusion (651 +/- 81 mg/d, P < .05). VLDL2 apo B production was similar during the saline (269 +/- 35 mg/d) and insulin (265 +/- 37 mg/d) infusions. No significant changes were observed in the fractional catabolic rates of either VLDL1 or VLDL2 apo B. We conclude that acute hyperinsulinemia lowers plasma triglyceride and VLDL levels principally by suppressing VLDL1 apo B production but has no effect on VLDL2 apo B production. These findings indicate that the rates of VLDL1 and VLDL2 apo B production in the liver are independently regulated.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that state anxiety operates as moderator of the alcohol-aggression relation. Participants were 80 healthy male social drinkers between 21 and 33 years of age. They were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups: (a) alcohol + anxiety induction (n = 20), (b) placebo + anxiety induction (n = 20), (c) alcohol + no anxiety induction (n = 20), and (d) placebo + no anxiety induction (n = 20). Anxiety was induced by informing participants that they had to deliver a speech about what they liked and disliked about their body in front of a video camera. A modified version of the Taylor Aggression Paradigm (S. Taylor, 1967) was then used to measure aggressive behavior in a situation where electric shocks were administered to, and received from, a fictitious opponent under the guise of a competitive reaction time task. Results indicated that the anxiety induction was successful in suppressing aggression for participants who received alcohol equal to levels seen in placebo controls. Findings are discussed within the context of a number of theories of alcohol's anxiolytic effects in relation to intoxicated aggression. Electrical stimulation of localized areas of the opossum medulla and cerebellum induced goal-oriented eating and grooming behaviors of stereotyped gagging. Following radical telencephalic lesions, these animals showed considerable behavioral capacity and in many cases continued to demonstrate centrally induced responses. Animals with lesions, however, failed to groom or show active food-seeking behavior, and they showed poor thermoregulation in the heat, presumably because of the loss of thermoregulatory grooming. These deficits following removal of the telencephalon appear to have resulted from disruption of important sources of control over behaviors rather than from loss of basic consummatory response mechanisms, since grooming and eating, while less directed, could still be elicited by central stimulation. These results support the view that the lower brain stem may contain intrinsic neural circuits for the integration of complex behaviors.  相似文献

Open testicular biopsy is a classic method of investigation in men with azoospermia. Recently, percutaneous needle biopsy of the testis has been used in attempts to obtain material for histopathological diagnosis in such cases and to retrieve spermatozoa for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). To determine whether a 19 gauge (G) and a 21G butterfly needle could be used for percutaneous aspiration of testicular tissue to determine the presence of mature spermatids and assess spermatogenesis, 10 patients (16 testes) and 12 patients (17 testes) underwent 19G or 21G needle biopsy respectively, immediately followed by open testicular biopsy, with both procedures under local anaesthesia. Biopsy with each needle size was compared with open biopsy. With the 19G needle, in the 14 cases where material was obtained there was full agreement with open biopsy regarding the presence or absence of mature spermatozoa, whereas with the 21G needle only nine of the 13 biopsies yielding material were predictive in this respect. Each needle size correlated poorly with open biopsy regarding evaluation of spermatogenesis. We conclude that percutaneous biopsy with a 19G butterfly needle is a quick and reliable method for demonstrating spermatozoa for ICSI. But for a detailed histopathological diagnosis, however, the needle biopsies gave poor results, whereas the material from the open testicular biopsies was assessable.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether exercise mediates the psychological and nutritional effects of testosterone therapy in men with symptomatic HIV illness, low serum testosterone, and clinical symptoms of hypogonadism. METHODS: A 12-wk open trial of biweekly intramuscular testosterone injections was conducted, with 54 men completing the trial and exercise assessments. Most (71%) men were diagnosed with AIDS; 41% had a CD4 < 50. One-third of the men were diagnosed with major depression, and nearly half had some evidence of wasting. Twenty-nine men (54%) engaged in exercise (predominantly resistance training) during the trial. Exercisers did not differ from nonexercisers on any measure of psychological well being or nutritional status at baseline. RESULTS: After 12 wk of testosterone treatment, those who exercised showed significant improvement in mood (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression; HAM-D) and overall distress (Brief Symptom Inventory; BSI) (P < 0.000 for both), as well as a significant increase in body cell mass (P < 0.01) and lean body mass (mean increase of 2.6 kg; P < 0.000) as measured by bioelectric impedance analysis. In contrast, nonexercisers showed improvement on the HAM-D (P < 0.000), but not the BSI or measures of nutritional status. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that exercise may be an important adjunct to testosterone therapy in the treatment of psychological distress and wasting symptoms in men with symptomatic HIV illness.  相似文献

Several challenge procedures have been developed to characterize the cough reflex in patients with airway diseases. This study was performed to compare the interindividual range of cough sensitivity in asthmatic and normal subjects as well as smokers using an identical method. Sixteen normal subjects, 20 patients with mild bronchial asthma, 6 patients with moderate to severe bronchial asthma, 9 current smokers, and 7 occasional smokers were included. In all subjects, methacholine challenges and standardized citric acid challenges were performed. Sensitivity of the cough reflex was expressed as cough threshold, i.e., as concentration at which coughing occurred. Reproducibility was assessed in 23 subjects. Within a concentration range of 0.625-320.0 mg/ml, inhaled citric acid caused cough in all subjects. Geometric mean (range) cough threshold was 13 (2.5-160) in normal subjects, 14 (5-40) in patients with mild, and 32 (20-40) mg/ml in patients with moderate to severe asthma, 40 (20-80) in current smokers, and 119 (80-160) in occasional smokers. Cough thresholds were reproducible within one doubling concentration. In normal subjects and patients with mild bronchial asthma, thresholds were not significantly different from each other but lower than those of the other groups (p<0.05 each). Cough thresholds in smokers and patients with moderate to severe asthma did also not differ significantly and were lower than in occasional smokers (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between cough threshold, baseline FEV subset1 , and methacholine responsiveness. Our data indicate that (1) subjects with mild asthma showed on average similar cough thresholds as normal subjects, (2) there was a large variation in cough thresholds within groups, (3) the reproducibility of cough thresholds was within one doubling concentration, (4) cough thresholds did not correlate with methacholine responsiveness or baseline airway tone. In view of the prevalence of cough as a symptom of bronchial asthma, it appears that the determination of citric acid-induced cough thresholds does not yield additional diagnostic information in these subjects.  相似文献

Airways epithelial cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of asthma, but their role remains to be determined. Epithelial cells can release large amounts of 15-hydroxy-eicosatetranoic acid (15-HETE) and smaller amounts of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) as well as fibronectin, a mediator involved in epithelial repair after injury. Epithelial cells obtained after bronchial brushing of 16 asthmatic (age 38 +/- 5 yr) and 11 normal subjects (age 36 +/- 5 yr) were studied. The percentage of epithelial cells was assessed by immunocytochemistry using an anti-cytokeratin antibody. The viability of the cells was assessed by trypan blue exclusion. The release of 15-HETE PGE2 and fibronectin was studied in resting cells and after A23187 calcium ionophore stimulation. Epithelial cells always comprised more than 86% of cells recovered, and the viability of epithelial cells was significantly (p < 0.001, Mann-Whitney U test) greater in normal subjects (54 +/- 5%) compared with asthmatic subjects (13 +/- 1%). The release of 15-HETE and fibronectin by resting epithelial cells was significantly greater in asthmatics (p < 0.05, Mann-Whitney U test) than in normal subjects. A23187 significantly (p < 0.05, Wilcoxon W test) increased the release of 15-HETE and fibronectin. There was no significant difference in the release of PGE2 by resting cells from either asthmatics or normal subjects, but challenge with A23187 induced a significant (p < 0.03, Wilcoxon W test) increase in PGE2 from cells of asthmatics but not from cells of normal subjects. This study shows that epithelial cells are activated and less viable in asthma and suggests a role for these cells in asthma.  相似文献
