We analyze four nce Memed novels of Yaar Kemal using six style markers: most frequent words, syllable counts, word type – or part of speech – information, sentence length in terms of words, word length in text, and word length in vocabulary. For analysis we divide each novel into five thousand word text blocks and count the frequencies of each style marker in these blocks. The style markers showing the best separation are most frequent words and sentence lengths. We use stepwise discriminant analysis to determine the best discriminators of each style marker. We then use these markers in cross validation based discriminant analysis. Further investigation based on multiple analysis of variance (MANOVA) reveals how the attributes of each style marker group distinguish among the volumes.

Two views of AI in leisure and the work-place and two views of society are discussed. There is a conceptualisation of AI systems enhancing people in their work and leisure and another of AI automata which tends to degrade and replace human activity. Researchers tend to resolve into Optimists who work within a micro-sociological view and see AI systems as inevitable and beneficent. Others are Pessimists who adopt a macro-sociological view and see AI in its automata role and deliterious social consequences. These polarised perspectives must be integrated as only enhancing AI is socially acceptable.

The role of craft language in the process of teaching (learning) Waza (skill) will be discussed from the perspective of human intelligence. It may be said that the ultimate goal of learning Waza in any Japanese traditional performance is not the perfect reproduction of the teaching (learning) process of Waza. In fact, a special metaphorical language (craft language) is used, which has the effect of encouraging the learner to activate his creative imagination. It is through this activity that the he learns his own habitus (Kata). It is suggested that, in considering the difference of function between natural human intelligence and artificial intelligence, attention should be paid to the imaginative activity of the learner as being an essential factor for mastering Kata. This article is a modified English version of Chapter 5 of my bookWaza kara shiru (Learning from Skill), Tokyo University Press, 1987, pp. 93–105.

For recovering precise object boundaries in area-based stereo matching, there are two problems. One is the so-called occlusion problem. This can be avoided if we can select only visible cameras among many cameras used. Another one is the problem called boundary overreach, i.e. the recovered object boundary turns out to be wrongly located away from the real one due to the window's coverage beyond a boundary. This is especially harmful to segmenting objects using depth information. A few approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. However, these techniques tend to degrade on smooth surfaces. That is, there seems to be a trade-off problem between recovering precise object edges and obtaining smooth surfaces. In this paper, we propose a new simple method to solve these problems. Using multiple stereo pairs and multiple windowing, our method detects the region where the boundary overreach is likely to occur (let us call it BO region) and adopts appropriate methods for the BO and non-BO regions. Although the proposed method is quite simple, the experimental results have shown that it is very effective at recovering both sharp object edges at their correct locations and smooth object surfaces. We also present a sound analysis of the boundary overreach which has not been clearly explained in the past.

In traditional approaches to object-oriented programming, objects are active, while relations between them are passive. The activeness of an object reveals itself when the object invokes a method (function) as a reaction to a message from another object (or itself). While this model is suitable for some tasks, like arranging interactions between windows, widgets and the end-user in a typical GUI environment, it's not appropriate for others. Business applications development is one of the examples. In this domain, relations between conceptual objects are at least as important as objects themselves and the more appropriate model for this field would be the one where relations are active while objects are passive. A version of such a model is presented in the paper. The model considers a system as consisting of a set of objects, a code of laws, and a set of connectors, each connector hanging on a group of objects that must obey a certain law. The formal logical semantics of this model is presented as a way of analyzing the set of all possible trajectories of all possible systems. The analysis allows to differentiate valid trajectories from invalid ones. The procedural semantics is presented as a state machine that given an initial state, generates all possible trajectories that can be derived from this state. This generator can be considered as a model of a connectors scheduler that allows various degrees of parallelism, from sequential execution to the maxim possible parallelism. In conclusion, a programming language that could be appropriate for the proposed computer environment is discussed, and the problems of applying the model to the business domain are outlined.

Regions-of-Interest and Spatial Layout for Content-Based Image Retrieval
To date most content-based image retrieval (CBIR) techniques rely on global attributes such as color or texture histograms which tend to ignore the spatial composition of the image. In this paper, we present an alternative image retrieval system based on the principle that it is the user who is most qualified to specify the query content and not the computer. With our system, the user can select multiple regions-of-interest and can specify the relevance of their spatial layout in the retrieval process. We also derive similarity bounds on histogram distances for pruning the database search. This experimental system was found to be superior to global indexing techniques as measured by statistical sampling of multiple users' satisfaction ratings.

This paper describes an approach for tracking rigid and articulated objects using a view-based representation. The approach builds on and extends work on eigenspace representations, robust estimation techniques, and parameterized optical flow estimation. First, we note that the least-squares image reconstruction of standard eigenspace techniques has a number of problems and we reformulate the reconstruction problem as one of robust estimation. Second we define a subspace constancy assumption that allows us to exploit techniques for parameterized optical flow estimation to simultaneously solve for the view of an object and the affine transformation between the eigenspace and the image. To account for large affine transformations between the eigenspace and the image we define a multi-scale eigenspace representation and a coarse-to-fine matching strategy. Finally, we use these techniques to track objects over long image sequences in which the objects simultaneously undergo both affine image motions and changes of view. In particular we use this EigenTracking technique to track and recognize the gestures of a moving hand.

Given a finite setE R n, the problem is to find clusters (or subsets of similar points inE) and at the same time to find the most typical elements of this set. An original mathematical formulation is given to the problem. The proposed algorithm operates on groups of points, called samplings (samplings may be called multiple centers or cores); these samplings adapt and evolve into interesting clusters. Compared with other clustering algorithms, this algorithm requires less machine time and storage. We provide some propositions about nonprobabilistic convergence and a sufficient condition which ensures the decrease of the criterion. Some computational experiments are presented.

This paper presents a detailed study of Eurotra Machine Translation engines, namely the mainstream Eurotra software known as the E-Framework, and two unofficial spin-offs – the C,A,T and Relaxed Compositionality translator notations – with regard to how these systems handle hard cases, and in particular their ability to handle combinations of such problems. In the C,A,T translator notation, some cases of complex transfer are wild, meaning roughly that they interact badly when presented with other complex cases in the same sentence. The effect of this is that each combination of a wild case and another complex case needs ad hoc treatment. The E-Framework is the same as the C,A,T notation in this respect. In general, the E-Framework is equivalent to the C,A,T notation for the task of transfer. The Relaxed Compositionality translator notation is able to handle each wild case (bar one exception) with a single rule even where it appears in the same sentence as other complex cases.

In this paper, a high-speed digital processed microscopic observational system for telemicrooperation is proposed with a dynamic focusing system and a high-speed digital-processing system using the depth from focus criterion. In our previous work [10], we proposed a system that could simultaneously obtain an all-in-focus image as well as the depth of an object. In reality, in a microoperation, it is not easy to obtain good visibility of objects with a microscope focused at a shallow depth, especially in microsurgery and DNA studies, among other procedures. In this sense, the all-in-focus image, which keeps an in-focus texture over the entire object, is useful for observing microenvironments with the microscope. However, one drawback of the all-in-focus image is that there is no information about the objects depth. It is also important to obtain a depth map and show the 3D microenvironments at any view angle in real time to actuate the microobjects. Our earlier system with a dynamic focusing lens and a smart sensor could obtain the all-in-focus image and the depth in 2 s. To realize real-time microoperation, a system that could process at least 30 frames per second (60 times faster than the previous system) would be required. This paper briefly reviews the depth from focus criterion to Simultaneously achieve the all-in-focus image and the reconstruction of 3D microenvironments. After discussing the problem inherent in our earlier system, a frame-rate system constructed with a high-speed video camera and FPGA (field programmable gate array) hardware is discussed. To adapt this system for use with the microscope, new criteria to solve the ghost problem in reconstructing the all-in-focus image are proposed. Finally, microobservation shows the validity of this system.Received: 12 August 2001, Accepted: 17 July 2002, Published online: 12 November 2003 Correspondence to: Kohtaro Ohba

Incremental development and testing is widely cited as one advantage of the object-oriented paradigm. To date, most of the work in this area emphasizes incremental development at the macro level, i.e., at the application or class hierarchy levels. We believe that incremental development should also be exploited at the individual class level. In particular, classes may contain a variety of methods that place objects of the class into relatively complex states. By organizing and developing an individual class in an incremental fashion, one can (a) develop and test partial classes and (b) generate simple states for test objects prior to generating more complex ones. This process realizes two benefits: it simplifies debugging by reducing the size of the search space when tracking down defects, and it makes regression testing more efficient. This paper reports on a development environment designed to support micro-incremental class development. This environment integrates several different components and techniques. We discuss each component of the environment individually, and then illustrate the use of the environment in a case study.

The proofs of the Church–Rosser theorems for , , and reduction in untyped -calculus are formalized in Isabelle/HOL, an implementation of Higher Order Logic in the generic theorem prover Isabelle. For -reduction, both the standard proof and Takahashi's are given and compared. All proofs are based on a general theory of commutating relations that supports an almost geometric style of reasoning about confluence diagrams.

A conditional version of the integral inequality of gronwall, a slight generalization of a stability theorem of perron, and overflow-free scaling of analogue computer set-ups
Summary The main subject of this paper is the scaling of a given set of differential equations in such a way that the output voltages of the integrators of the associated analogue computer set-up do not exceed certain upper and lower bounds imposed by the reference voltage and the limited power of resolution of the elements of the analogue computer. The paper gives a priori bounds on the solution of the differential set. Some of these bounds work with norms, others withKamke-norms.Perron's stability theorem mentioned in the title of this paper results by inserting special norms and neglecting lower bounds. A difficulty arises by the relative weakness of the condition xa implies f(x,t)v(t)x on the right hand side of the setdx/dt=f(x,t), where ... is any norm anda is a positive real constant. As a consequence of this, it seems no longer possible to use the usual techniques known from the literature on existence theorems and bounds for the solution of differential equations. To cope with this situation, a conditional version of the well-known theorem ofGronwall (also known by the name of Lemma ofBellman) will be derived.

With every finite-state word or tree automaton, we associate a binary relation on words or trees. We then consider the rectangular decompositions of this relation, i.e., the various ways to express it as a finite union of Cartesian products of sets of words or trees, respectively. We show that the determinization and the minimization of these automata correspond to simple geometrical reorganizations of the rectangular decompositions of the associated relations. This work was supported by the Programme de Recherches Coordonnées: Mathématiques et Informatique. It is a commonly occurring problem to find good norms · or logarithmic norms (·) for a given matrix in the sense that they should be close to respectively the spectral radius (A) and the spectral abscissa (A). Examples may be the certification thatA is convergent, i.e. (A)A<1 or stable, i.e. (A)(A)<0. Often the ordinary norms do not suffice and one would like to try simple modifications of them such as using an ordinary norm for a diagonally transformed matrix. This paper treats this problem for some of the ordinary norms.

This paper suggests ways in which the pattern-matching capability of the computer can be used to further our understanding of stylized ballad language. The study is based upon a computer-aided analysis of the entire 595,000- word corpus of Francis James Child'sThe English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1882–1892), a collection of 305 textual traditions, most of which are represented by a variety of texts. The paper focuses on the Mary Hamilton tradition as a means of discussing the function of phatic language in the ballad genre and the significance of textual variation.Cathy Lynn Preston is a Research Associate, Computer Research in the Humanities, at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The concept of information is virtually ubiquitous in contemporary cognitive science. It is claimed to be processed (in cognitivist theories of perception and comprehension), stored (in cognitivist theories of memory and recognition), and otherwise manipulated and transformed by the human central nervous system. Fred Dretske's extensive philosophical defense of a theory of informational content (semantic information) based upon the Shannon-Weaver formal theory of information is subjected to critical scrutiny. A major difficulty is identified in Dretske's equivocations in the use of the concept of a signal bearing informational content. Gibson's alternative conception of information (construed as analog by Dretske), while avoiding many of the problems located in the conventional use of signal, raises different but equally serious questions. It is proposed that, taken literally, the human CNS does not extract or process information at all; rather, whatever information is construed as locatable in the CNS is information only for an observer-theorist and only for certain purposes.Blood courses through our veins, andinformation through our central nervous system.— A Neuropsychology Textbook.

This paper deals with stereo camera-based estimation of sensor translation in the presence of modest sensor rotation and moving objects. It also deals with the estimation of object translation from a moving sensor. The approach is based on Gabor filters, direct passive navigation, and Kalman filters.Three difficult problems associated with the estimation of motion from an image sequence are solved. (1) The temporal correspondence problem is solved using multi-scale prediction and phase gradients. (2) Segmentation of the image measurements into groups belonging to stationary and moving objects is achieved using the Mahalanobis distance. (3) Compensation for sensor rotation is achieved by internally representing the inter-frame (short-term) rotation in a rigid-body model. These three solutions possess a circular dependency, forming a cycle of perception. A seeding process is developed to correctly initialize the cycle. An additional complication is the translation-rotation ambiguity that sometimes exists when sensor motion is estimated from an image velocity field. Temporal averaging using Kalman filters reduces the effect of motion ambiguities. Experimental results from real image sequences confirm the utility of the approach.Financial support from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada is acknowledged.

In two recent books, Jerry Fodor has developed a set of sufficient conditions for an object X to non-naturally and non-derivatively mean X. In an earlier paper we presented three reasons for thinking Fodor's theory to be inadequate. One of these problems we have dubbed the Pathologies Problem. In response to queries concerning the relationship between the Pathologies Problem and what Fodor calls Block's Problem, we argue that, while Block's Problem does not threatenFodor's view, the Pathologies Problem does.We would like to thank Ray Elugardo, Pat Manfredi, and Donna Summerfield for helpful comments on an earlier paper on Fodorian Semantics, X means X: Semantics Fodor-Style. We would especially like to thank Ned Block for extended e-mail conversations about Block's Problem. Block agrees that his problem is not the same as our pathologies problem. Contrary to what we say here, he still maintains that his objection can ultimately be made to work to defeat Fodor's theory of meaning. His elaboration of Block's Problem is different than the one we present here. Versions of a related paper were presented at the 1991 Annual Meeting of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology as well as the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Science.

In this paper we define an extension ofF [CUG92] to which we add functions that dispatch on different terms according to the type they receive as argument. In other words, we enrich the explicit parametric polymorphism ofF by an explicit ad hoc polymorphism (according the classification of [Str67]). We prove that the calculus we obtain, calledF & , enjoys the properties of Church-Rosser and Subject Reduction and that its proof system is coherent. We also define a significant subcalculus for which the subtyping is decidable. This extension has not only a logical interest but it is strongly motivated by the foundation of a broadly used programming style: object-oriented programming. The connections betweenF & and object-oriented languages are widely stressed, and the modelling byF & of some features of the object-oriented style is described, continuing the work of [CGL96].Part of this work has appeared under the title F & : integrating parametric and ad hoc second order polymorphism in the 4th International Workshop on Database Programming Languages.
