Recognizing that fatigue is a two‐parameter problem requiring two load parameters to define cyclic loads unambiguously, a unified approach has been developed to account for crack growth behaviour in terms of ΔK and Kmax . Since both driving forces govern the crack growth rate, any analysis based on either ΔK or Kmax will provide only partial information about the fatigue behavior of materials. It is shown that ΔKKmax plots and the associated crack growth trajectory maps reflect the basic mechanisms that contribute to crack growth in a material. These plots also provide a convenient basis to recognize the changes in the micromechanisms that can occur as a function of load ratio or crack growth rate, or both. Taking examples from the literature, crack growth trajectory maps are provided showing such changes in the governing mechanisms of crack growth. It is shown that the ΔKKmax approach is not an alternative to crack closure models, but it reflects the intrinsic material behaviour that must be understood before reliable crack prediction models can be developed.  相似文献

Most of the previous parameters that utilized as a crack driving force were established in modifying the parameter Kop in Elber's effective SIF range ΔKeff(=Kmax?Kop). However, the parameters that replaced the traditional parameter Kop were based on different measurements or theoretical calculations, so it is difficult to distinguish their differences. This paper focuses on the physical meaning of compliance changes caused by plastic deformation at the crack tip; the tests were carried out under different amplitude loading for structural steel. Based on these test results, differences of several parameter ΔKeff in literature are analysed and an improved two‐parameter driving force ΔKdrive(=(Kmax)nK)1‐n) has been proposed. Experimental data for several different types of materials taken from literature were used in the analyses. Presented results indicate that the ΔKdrive parameter was equally effective or better than ΔK(=Kmax?Kmin), ΔKeff(=Kmax?Kop) and ΔK*(= (Kmax)αK+)1?α) in correlating and predicting the R‐ratio effects on fatigue crack growth rate.  相似文献

In most of the previous three‐dimensional (3D) numerical studies of plasticity induced crack closure (PICC), ideal shapes have been assumed for the cracks. The aim of present paper is to study the effect of crack shape on PICC. With this objective a 3D numerical model was developed to predict PICC in middle‐tension (MT) specimens with different thicknesses and crack shapes. The radial size of crack tip elements and the stabilization of closure level were studied to ensure the quality of numerical predictions. Simultaneously, an independent numerical model was developed to predict crack shape evolution, stable crack shapes and corresponding K distributions. Crack closure was found to produce a significant tunnelling effect, with maximum values of ΔK and Kmax at the surface. The curved crack presented significant plastic deformation near the free surface which has a high impact on the computation time, compared to the straight crack. The modification of ΔK and Kmax with crack shape produced a variation of 38% in opening values at the interior positions, but relatively small variations at the surface. Considering the great influence of crack shape on PICC, it is fundamental to model realistic crack shapes.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) is usually studied assuming that ΔK is the driving parameter. An effective ΔK is considered in the presence of crack closure. However, after crack opening, there is an elastic regime that does not contribute to FCG. The objective here is to quantify this elastic range of ΔK, ΔKel, for different loading conditions and material properties. The yield stress was found to be the most important material parameter, followed by the hardening exponent. A linear decrease of ΔKel with ΔK was found for the 7050‐T6, 6082‐T6, and 6016‐T4 aluminium alloys, while the 304L stainless steel presented a slight increase. On the other hand, the increase of Kmax was found to increase the elastic fatigue range. Relatively high values of elastic range were obtained for the plane strain state, compared with the plane stress state.  相似文献

Behaviour of fatigue crack growth and closure through a compressive residual stress field is investigated by performing fatigue crack growth tests on welded SEN specimens of a structural steel (JIS SM50A). Depending on the type of the initial residual stress in the region of crack growth, the growth and closure of the crack show different behaviour. In particular, in the transition region from a compressive residual stress field to a tensile residual stress field, the fatigue crack growth rates cannot be described by the effective stress intensity factor range ΔKeff, based on the measured crack opening stress intensity factor Kop. Also it is found that the R'-method using the data of da/dN vs ΔK for residual stress-free specimens, with the effective stress ratio R'[=(Kmax+Kr)/(Kmin+Kr)], gives non-conservative predictions of the growth rates in the transition region. Observations of crack closure behaviour in this study indicates that partial opening of the crack occurs and this plays an important role in crack growth through a compressive residual stress field. Based on the concept of a partial opening point (defined and measured in this work), fatigue crack growth behaviour can be better explained.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Both experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to study crack initiation and growth of small cracks, near‐threshold growth behavior of large cracks at constant R‐ratio/decreasing ΔK and constant Kmax/decreasing ΔK, respectively, for 9310 steel. The results showed that a pronounced small‐crack effect was not observed even at R = ?1, small cracks initiated by a slip mechanism at strong slip sites. Worst‐case near‐threshold testing results for large cracks under several Kmax values showed that an effect of Kmax on the near‐threshold behavior does not exist in the present investigation. A worst‐case near‐threshold test for a large crack, i.e. constant Kmax/decreasing ΔK test, can give a conservative prediction of growth behavior of naturally initiated small cracks. Using the worst‐case near‐threshold data for a large crack and crack‐tip constraint factor equations defined in the paper, Newman's total fatigue‐life prediction method was improved. The fatigue lives predicted by the improved method were in reasonable agreement with the experiments. A three‐dimensional (3D) weight function method was used to calculate stress‐intensity factors for a surface crack at a notch of the present SENT specimen (with r/w = 1/8) by using a finite‐element reference solution. The results were verified by limited finite‐element solutions, and agreed well with those calculated by Newman's stress‐intensity factor equations when the stress concentration factor of the present specimen was used in the equations.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth properties of friction stir welded joints of 2024‐T3 aluminium alloy have been studied under constant load amplitude (increasing‐ΔK), with special emphasis on the residual stress (inverse weight function) effects on longitudinal and transverse crack growth rate predictions (Glinka's method). In general, welded joints were more resistant to longitudinally growing fatigue cracks than the parent material at threshold ΔK values, when beneficial thermal residual stresses decelerated crack growth rate, while the opposite behaviour was observed next to KC instability, basically due to monotonic fracture modes intercepting fatigue crack growth in weld microstructures. As a result, fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) predictions were conservative at lower propagation rates and non‐conservative for faster cracks. Regarding transverse cracks, intense compressive residual stresses rendered welded plates more fatigue resistant than neat parent plate. However, once the crack tip entered the more brittle weld region substantial acceleration of FCGR occurred due to operative monotonic tensile modes of fracture, leading to non‐conservative crack growth rate predictions next to KC instability. At threshold ΔK values non‐conservative predictions values resulted from residual stress relaxation. Improvements on predicted FCGR values were strongly dependent on how the progressive plastic relaxation of the residual stress field was considered.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the importance of compressive stresses on crack propagation rate. In a previous paper, namely ‘Crack Closure Inadequacy at Negative Stress Ratios’, Int. Journal of Fatigue, 26, 2004, pp. 241–252, was demonstrated the inadequacy of the crack closure concept and ΔKeff, at a negative stress ratio, R=−1, to predict crack propagation rate. It that paper was verified that, at negative stress ratios, crack closure changes with Pmax, for the same R ratio. The main conclusion was about plastic properties and mainly cyclic plastic properties, the Bauschinger effect included, on crack propagation when compressive stresses exist. It was then suggested that in the place of the crack closure concept, another concept based on plasticity should be used to explain fatigue crack propagation.In this paper, instead of working with the same negative R ratio (R=−1), a study on the behavior of crack propagation rate as a function of R ratio, from negative to positive stress ratios, is made. Both the effect of Pmax and of R ratio is taken into consideration. Measurements of roughness and of crack opening loads are made, in order to verify their influence on crack propagation rate. Different materials, in order to cover different cyclic plastic properties and different sensitivities to roughness are studied (Ck45-cyclic hardening; Ti6Al4V-cyclic softening, and aluminum, Al 7175-cyclically neutral) are studied. Aluminium alloys and titanium alloys are considered to be sensitive to roughness induced crack closure (RICC) while steels are more dependent on plastic properties (PICC).In this study it is emphasized the importance of the compressive part of the cycle, and of cyclic plastic properties, on crack propagation rate. It is reassessed the inadequacy of crack closure concept and ΔKeff to describe crack propagation rate, at negative stress ratios. It is also verified that models based solely on extrinsic properties of materials, like da/dN−ΔK or da/dN−ΔK (Kmax) should also incorporate intrinsic properties of the materials in order to properly correlate fatigue crack growth.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of SS 316(N) weld has been evaluated at different R‐ratios at room temperature and compared with that of the base metal. The FCG resistance of weld is better than that of the base material and is due to the residual stresses developed during the welding. The data were analyzed using the unified approach that considers the two‐parametric (ΔK and Kmax) nature of fatigue. The R‐ratio effects in both the base and weld metals are accounted for without invoking the extrinsic parameters, such as plasticity‐induced crack closure. Since the residual stresses are of the monotonic type, they affect the crack growth via the Kmax‐parameter. The crack growth trajectory plots were developed, and they show how the two crack tip driving forces, ΔK and Kmax, change to overcome the FCG resistance of the weld in relation to that of the base metal. The results also show that the effects from the compressive residual stresses are more dominant at low R‐values and occur via the Kmax parameter.  相似文献

Selective laser melting (SLM) is an emerging additive manufacturing technology, capable of producing complex geometry components. The current work studied both the effect of substrate material and mean stress on the fatigue crack growth behaviour along interfaces of bi‐material specimens, substrate, and part by SLM. Fatigue tests were carried out in agreement with ASTM E647 standard, using 6‐mm‐thick compact specimens. The substrate steel has only a negligible effect both on the fatigue crack propagation rate and on the crack path. The failure occurs in the material additively manufactured by SLM, near the interface. The mean stress produced only a reduced influence on the fatigue crack propagation rate in the Paris regime. For larger values of ΔK, where Kmax approaches KIc, a significant influence of the mean stress was observed. In spite of nondetection of crack closure, the application of overloads promoted significant fatigue crack retardation, quite similar for both substrate materials, probably due to the crack bifurcation during the overload.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The corrosion fatigue crack growth (FCG) behaviour, the effect of applied potential on corrosion FCG rates, and the fracture surfaces were studied for high‐strength low‐alloy steels, titanium alloys, and magnesium alloys. During investigation of the effect of applied potential on corrosion FCG rates, polarization was switched on for a time period in which it was possible to register the change in the crack growth rate corresponding to the open‐circuit potential and to measure the crack growth rate under polarization. Due to the higher resolution of the crack extension measurement technique, the time rarely exceeded 300 s. This approach made possible the observation of a non‐single mode effect of cathodic polarization on corrosion FCG rates. Cathodic polarization accelerated crack growth when the maximum stress intensity (Kmax) exceeded a certain well‐defined critical value characteristic for a given material‐solution combination. When Kmax was lower than the critical value, the same cathodic polarization, with all other conditions (specimen, solution, pH, loading frequency, stress ratio, temperature, etc.) being equal, retarded or had no influence on crack growth. The results and fractographic observations suggested that the acceleration in crack growth under cathodic polarization was due to hydrogen‐induced cracking (HIC). Therefore, critical values of Kmax, as well as the stress intensity range (ΔK) were regarded as corresponding to the onset of corrosion FCG according to the HIC mechanism and designated as KHIC and ΔKHIC. HIC was the main mechanism of corrosion FCG at Kmax > KHICK > ΔKHIC). For most of the material‐solution combinations investigated, stress‐assisted dissolution played a dominant role in the corrosion fatigue crack propagation at Kmax < KHICK < ΔKHIC).  相似文献

Crack closure is the most used mechanism to model thickness and load interaction effects on fatigue crack propagation. But assuming it is the only mechanism is equivalent to suppose that the rate of fatigue crack growth da/dN is primarily dependent on ΔKeff=KmaxKop, not on ΔK. But this assumption would imply that the normal practice of using da/dN×ΔK curves measured under plane-stress conditions (without considering crack closure) to predict the fatigue life of components working under plane-strain could lead to highly non-conservative errors, because the expected fatigue life of “thin” (plane-stress dominated) structures could be much higher than the life of “thick” (plane-strain dominated) ones, when both work under the same stress intensity range and load ratio. However, crack closure cannot be used to explain the overload-induced retardation effects found in this work under plane-strain, where both crack arrest and delays were associated to an increase in ΔKeff. These results indicate that the dominant role of crack closure in the modeling of fatigue crack growth should be reviewed.  相似文献

The maximum crack opening displacement is introduced to investigate the effect of compressive loads on crack opening stress in tension–compression loading cycles. Based on elastic–plastic finite element analysis of centre cracked finite plate and accounting for the effects of crack geometry size, Young's modulus, yield stress and strain hardening, the explicit expression of crack opening stress versus maximum crack opening displacement is presented. This model considers the effect of compressive loads on crack opening stress and avoids adopting fracture parameters around crack tip. Besides, it could be applied in a wide range of materials and load conditions. Further studies show that experimental results of da/dN ? ΔK curves with negative stress ratios could be condensed to a single curve using this crack opening stress model.  相似文献

High temperature fatigue crack growth has been examined in the light of the new concepts developed by the authors. We observe that the high temperature crack growth behavior can be explained using the two intrinsic parameters ΔK and Kmax, without invoking crack closure concepts. The two-parameter requirement implies that two driving forces are required simultaneously to cause fatigue cracks to grow. This results in two thresholds that must be exceeded to initiate the growth. Of the two, the cyclic threshold part is related to the cyclic plasticity, while the static threshold is related to the breaking of the crack tip bonds. It is experimentally observed that the latter is relatively more sensitive to temperature, crack tip environment and slip mode. With increasing test temperature, the cycle-dependent damage process becomes more time-dependent, with the effect that crack growth is dominated by Kmax. Thus, in all such fracture processes, whether it is an overload fracture or subcritical crack growth involving stress corrosion, sustained load, creep, fatigue or combinations thereof, Kmax (or an equivalent non-linear parameter such as Jmax) remains as one essential driving force contributing to the final material separation. Under fatigue conditions, cyclic amplitude ΔK (or an equivalent non-linear parameter like ΔJ) becomes the second necessary driving force needed to induce the characteristic cyclic damage for crack growth. Cyclic damage then reduces the role of Kmax required for crack growth at the expense of ΔK.  相似文献

Crack closure concept has been widely used to explain different issues of fatigue crack propagation. However, some authors have questioned the relevance of crack closure and have proposed alternative concepts. The main objective here is to check the effectiveness of crack closure concept by linking the contact of crack flanks with non-linear crack tip parameters. Accordingly, 3D-FE numerical models with and without contact were developed for a wide range of loading scenarios and the crack tip parameters usually linked to fatigue crack growth, namely range of cyclic plastic strain, crack tip opening displacement, size of reversed plastic zone and total plastic dissipation per cycle were investigated. It was demonstrated that: (i) LEFM concepts are applicable to the problem under study; (ii) the crack closure phenomenon has a great influence on crack tip parameters decreasing their values; (iii) the ΔKeff concept is able to explain the variations of crack tip parameters produced by the contact of crack flanks; and (iv) the analysis of remote compliance is the best numerical parameter to quantify the crack opening level. Therefore the crack closure concept seems to be valid. Additionally, the curves of crack tip parameters against stress intensity factor range obtained without contact may be seen as master curves.  相似文献

A transient behaviour is observed in the numerical analysis of plasticity induced crack closure at the beginning of crack propagation, as the residual plastic field is being formed. The extent of crack propagation prior to plasticity induced crack closure measurement has a major influence on the accuracy of numerical prediction and on computation time. The objective here is to quantify and understand the minimum propagation, Δastb, required to obtain stabilized crack opening values. For plane stress state, Δastb was found to increase with ΔK. Under plane strain conditions, a peak of closure exists at the beginning of crack propagation for relatively low ΔK values, which promotes relatively large transient periods. Two driving forces explain the stabilization behaviour, the formation of residual plastic wake and the stabilization of plastic strain, but the second seemed to control the phenomenon. Finally, two strategies are proposed to accelerate convergence. The first, consisting of a progressive increase of maximum load, is relevant in plane strain and 3D studies, in order to eliminate the initial peak. The second strategy consists of an extrapolation model and is very effective for plane stress conditions.  相似文献

In the present work, comprehensive investigation of both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation was carried out to investigate the plastic mismatch effect on plasticity induced crack closure (PICC) behavior and effective fatigue crack tip driving force. During the process of crack tip approaching interface, crack tip load and crack tip load ratio will change, resulting in the change of PICC degree. When the crack propagates towards higher strength side, Kop/Kmax increases; when the crack propagates towards lower strength side, Kop/Kmax decreases firstly and then increases. The two mechanisms of “interface plastic mismatch effect on nominal fatigue crack tip driving force” and “interface plastic mismatch effect on PICC degree” were compared. The second mechanism must be considered when building crack tip driving force model for describing fatigue crack crossing plastically mismatched interface, because it is more physically factual and maybe more important than the first mechanism.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth behavior of an austenitic metastable stainless steel AISI 301LN in the Paris region is investigated in this work. The fatigue crack growth rate curves are evaluated in terms of different parameters such as the range of stress intensity factor ΔK, the effective stress intensity factor ΔKeff, and the two driving force parameter proposed by Kujawski K1.The finite element method is used to calculate the stress intensity factor of the specimens used in this investigation. The new stress intensity factor solution has been proved to be an alternative to explain contradictory results found in the literature.Fatigue crack propagation tests have been carried out on thin sheets with two different microstructural conditions and different load ratios. The influence of microstructural and mechanical variables has been analyzed using different mechanisms proposed in the literature. The influence of the compressive residual stress induced by the martensitic transformation is determined by using a model based on the proposal of McMeeking et al. The analyses demonstrate the necessity of including Kmax as a true driving force for the fatigue crack growth. A combined parameter is proposed to explain the effects of different variables on the fatigue crack growth rate curves. It is found that along with residual stresses, the microcracks and microvoids are other factor affecting the fatigue crack growth rate in the steel studied.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth behaviors of Laser formed and ingot metallurgy (IM) Ti–6Al–4V alloys were studied in three environments: vacuum, air and 3.5% NaCl solution. Taking the Unified Fatigue Damage Approach, the fatigue crack growth data were analyzed with two intrinsic parameters, stress intensity amplitude ΔK and maximum stress intensity Kmax, and their limiting values ΔK* and . Fatigue crack growth rates da/dN were found increase with stress ratio R, highest in 3.5% NaCl solution, somewhat less in air and lowest in vacuum, and higher in IM alloy than in Laser formed one. In 3.5% NaCl solution, stress corrosion cracking (SCC) was superimposed on fatigue at R=0.9 for where Kmax>KISCC, the threshold stress intensity for SCC. This and environment-assisted fatigue crack growth were evidenced by the deviation in fatigue crack growth trajectory (ΔK* vs. curve) from the pure fatigue line where . Furthermore, the fractographic features, identified along the trajectory path, reflected the fatigue crack growth behaviors of both alloys in a given environment.  相似文献
