Comment on article in the April 1961 "American Psychologist". It is in response to the account of the tripartite American Board of Clinical Hypnosis and its certification of physicians, dentists, and psychologists through three sub-boards. The authors consider it their duty to call attention to the fact that there exists a strong body of opinion which is opposed to the formation of such examining and certifying boards. A representative sample of contributors (333) to the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology was asked to report on their motivations for conducting studies that had been published in that journal. Results indicate that the primary motivation of these clinical researchers was to build on prior theory and research through the gathering and analysis of new data to answer socially significant applied-clinical questions. More immediate pragmatic considerations (e.g., tenure, funding, degree or job requirements, and availability of Ss) were reported to be of secondary, but nevertheless significant, importance. Most respondents described the training model in which they had received their doctoral education or oriented toward an integrated scientist-practitioner approach rather than one that focused primarily on research, therapy, or assessment training. It was also found that these clinical researchers rarely conducted investigations in the context of community service or consultation interventions or in order to replicate past research. Results are discussed in light of current controversies in clinical psychology concerning the optimal model for training and the relevance of clinical research. The Society for Unification Psychology ("SUNI"—pronounced as "sunny") was formed by a group of psychologists concerned about the growing issues of diversity and fragmentation in psychology. The Society held its first organizational meeting at the 1985 APA convention. It is intended that SUNI will become a special interest group of APA's Division 24, Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. The Society's purpose is to stimulate discussion of issues of unity and disunity in psychology by: (1) planning symposia and other presentations at APA and related conventions; (2) conducting Society interest group meetings at these conventions; and (3) publishing a Newsletter. Explains changes in the American Psychologist (AP) and reveals plans for 3 special issues in 1992 and 1993 (including a commemorative issue to observe the American Psychological Association's (APA's) centennial year. AP's standard editorial procedure, reasons for some rejections, and reconsideration of submissions are discussed. The editor notes that APA's new building (already a financial success) and its highly successful publications program can become an additional source of income to APA. The Council of Representatives (COR) of the American Psychological Association (APA) considered many significant agenda items at the February 2010 meeting in Washington, DC, but the most important item for the Society for the History of Psychology (SHP) was the budget for 2010. The COR adopted a revised version of Ethical Standard 1.02 and Ethical Standard 1.03. The COR voted to hold its meetings in San Diego at a facility other than the Manchester Grant Hyatt Hotel, which is owned by Douglas Manchester who contributed significantly to supporting a proposition that bans same-sex marriage in California. The COR approved a revised Model Act for State Licensure of Psychologists and numerous other items that are unlikely to be of direct interest to the members of the SHP. A report of additional actions of the COR was published in the April issue of the Monitor on Psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Comments on the original article by L. A. Marascuilo (see record 1966-07190-001) which discusses large-sample multiple comparisons. An alternative to Marascuilo's χ2 analogue of Scheffé's theorem for performing tests on multiple linear contrasts among proportions coming from K independent populations is described. Based on the arcsin transformation of p, the proposed alternative is suitable for small samples and is computationally simpler. Tests of complex contrasts are also exemplified. Argues that the trends of the explosion of knowledge go against the discontinuation of general and applied monographs. Focus is on the demise of Psychological Monographs and the need to reinstitute the publication with new editorial policy. Advantages of Psychological Monographs, compared with the International Journal of Psychiatry, include its ability to make a basic contribution in issues important to psychology (e.g., psychotherapy).
