Beginning with the academic year 1960-61, Division 1 of the APA is initiating a lectureship program designed to stimulate interest in psychology in certain selected undergraduate colleges. The plan of the lectureship is to have a distinguished psychologist visit the college for one day, delivering a formal lecture and holding informal discussions with students and faculty members. Colleges invited to participate in the program will contribute entertainment of the lecturer and will make a contribution toward his honorarium. Division 1 has been very fortunate in the quality of the lecturers who have agreed to participate in the venture. We believe that a lectureship program of this sort may prove to be of distinct service in advancing interest in psychology in colleges which do not have a graduate program in the subject. Presents the 1986 Convention Program of the American Psychological Association's Division of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology. The quality of the submissions was high and the process of choosing which to include was difficult. The program allotment was expanded by two hours and thereby included almost sixty people on the program. Their papers address the spectrum of topics within philosophical and theoretical psychology. Several programs specifically address the issue of theoretical foundations of applied psychology, a special theme of this year's program. One of the biggest problems to confront Division 1 is the definition implicit in its name. All too often, "general" psychology is interpreted to mean "psychology in general" or, more colloquially, "any old thing". It is important, therefore, to clarify the definition and explicate the goals of the Division in order to elucidate the role of theory and philosophy in our activities. Division 1, its officers and executive committee have stressed the need for constructive integration in the field. One specific initiative we have taken as a division is the establishment of The William James Award in General Psychology—an award for a published paper or book which best illustrates the type of integration towards which we are working. With some of the pragmatism of William James, we continue to try to work through the theoretical and philosophical diversity to try to find some fundamental unity and to increase communication among all of us. As is true for most small divisions, membership in PIRI overlaps with membership in all other APA divisions. Thus, our members include hardcore experimentalists teaching in Christian colleges, social psychologists focusing on research in the psychology of religion, pastoral counselors, transpersonal psychologists, religiously-committed psychologists attempting to integrate psychology and theology, and numerous others. Our roots lie in the American Catholic Psychological Association; our branches point to religion in all its forms. Our common commitment is to the assertion that religion is a critical psychological variable. Examples are given of our theoretical and philosophical interests, including (1) Philosophy of Science; (2) Anthropologies/Theories of Human Nature; (3) Spiritual or Religious Development; (4) Psychology, Politics, and Ethics; (5) Religion as a Significant Psychological Variable; and (6) Critique of Psychological Theories. Twenty-five years ago, leaders in the fledgling APA Division of Counseling Psychology initiated the Journal of Counseling Psychology. What has evolved as journal policy, we note, reflects early developments in the history of the division. A steady growth in the proportion of empirical as against nonempirical articles and a dramatic rise in the proportion of process-outcome studies in the journal symbolize the division's continuing need for unity of thought; the Counseling Psychologist, by contrast, is an outlet in which divisional members may express their need for individuality of action. What is now known as the Division of Rehabilitation Psychology was formally recognized as the 22nd Division of the American Psychological Association in September 1958. It took 10 years of persistent effort by its founders to bring that about. The first formal arrangement with APA took place in 1949 when "The National Council on Psychological Aspects of Physical Disability" became a special interest group. Now, on the occasion of the centennial celebration of the American Psychological Association, the Division of Rehabilitation Psychology honors more than 40 years of its commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of disability problems as applied to real-life issues. The author profiles the development and professional history of Division 22 of the American Psychological Association. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
