Sustainability or “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [1] remains a relatively new concept for the water industry. The challenge is to develop sustainable recycled water projects that meet the needs of a water business as the responsible service authority, while at the same time meeting the individual needs of a particular community. The community consultation model that has been adopted by Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water to assist in the implementation of our urban Water Quality Improvement Program is widely considered to be a water industry benchmark. The integration of this tried and tested consultation model with our recently adopted Recycled Water Strategy is now providing us with a framework for informing and educating local communities and other key stakeholders about recycled water. The model also encourages local stakeholders to play a major role in identifying and evaluating opportunities for potential sustainable recycled water projects to meet the needs of their particular community. The successful elements of the model that have been further developed include community newsletters, information packages and public workshops. Initial newsletters and an information workshop seek local community input into identifying potential projects. Subsequent information packages and workshop(s) provide further information for interested individuals and/or organisations in the development of project proposals. Local community input into prioritising the criteria used to assess project proposals are also sought, usually through these workshop(s). Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water has challenged the perceived ‘we know what's best for you’ culture by providing key stakeholders with the opportunity to have informed input during the decision making process. This is allowing us to develop sustainable recycled water projects that take into consideration the needs of individual communities and key stakeholders. It is also assisting us to build strong relationships with our customers through educated and informed communities.  相似文献

The idea for this paper resulted from a workshop on the use of remotely operated experiments (weblabs) in chemical engineering education held in Cambridge, UK, in July 2005 (http://como.cheng.cam.ac.uk/conf.workshop.html). At the workshop people using weblabs met to discuss experiences and different approaches on how to make the most out of remote experiments in undergraduate chemical engineering teaching.We describe the technology involved in making educational experiments available on the internet and how they are motivated and used in teaching at MIT, the University of Cambridge and the University of Leipzig. Experiences are discussed and we give our view of the strengths and weaknesses of weblabs in chemical engineering education.  相似文献

Four different methods for measuring ultrafine particle size distributions in the 3–10-nm particle diameter range are compared and discussed. These methods all use an ultrafine condensation particle counter (TSI Inc. Model 3025 or its prototype) as the detector, but use different approaches to determine the size of the particles counted. Size classification was achieved using a Hauke Model VIE-06 differential mobility analyzer, a specially configured TSI Model 3040S diffusion battery, an ultrafine condensation particle counter with a variable condenser temperature, and an ultrafine condensation particle counter with a pulse height analyzer for signals produced by the optical detector. The response of these systems to ultrafine particles of known size and composition was studied during a workshop held in Lund, Sweden, during July 1991. After this workshop, measurements of ultrafine particles were made on the Swedish icebreaker Oden during the International Arctic Ocean Expedition 1991 (August 1, 1991 through October 7, 1991). In this article, the results of these laboratory and field measurements are discussed. The strengths and limitations of these measurement methods are emphasized.  相似文献

Forest managers in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) use fertilization as a means to increase timber yields in managed stands. Information on the biological basis for nutrient amendments and stand growth responses to fertilization is required to effectively use fertilization as a silvicultural tool, and research programs in mineral cycling and forest nutrition have been underway in the region for about four decades.Most PNW Douglas-fir forest sites are nitrogen deficient. Mineral cycling research has shown high C/N ratios and low nitrification rates for soils in the region.Research and development projects in the Pacific Northwest have produced an information base that is used to select sites and stands for fertilization and to forecast growth after treatment. Much of the basis for operational fertilization programs in western Oregon and Washington comes from cooperative research programs; current activities for these programs are directed toward improving site-specific response information.Forest fertilization in the Pacific Northwest has become a silvicultural practice of major significance over the past two decades. Forest industry and government organizations managing forest lands in western Oregon and Washington apply nitrogen fertilizer to Douglas-fir stands over a range of soil and stand types (operational fertilization of other species is minor). About 50,000 to 55,000 ha are fertilized each year, and future programs will likely be of similar magnitude. Most current plans for management regimes including fertilization call for multiple applications.  相似文献

Environmental catalysis has continuously grown in importance over the last 2 decades not only in terms of the worldwide catalyst market, but also as a driver of advances in the whole area of catalysis. The development of innovative “environmental” catalysts is also the crucial factor towards the objective of developing a new sustainable industrial chemistry. In the last decade, considerable expansion of the traditional area of environmental catalysis (mainly NOx removal from stationary and mobile sources, and VOC conversion) has also occurred. New areas include: (i) catalytic technologies for liquid or solid waste reduction or purification; (ii) use of catalysts in energy-efficient catalytic technologies and processes; (iii) reduction of the environmental impact in the use or disposal of catalysts; (iv) new eco-compatible refinery, chemical or non-chemical catalytic processes; (v) catalysis for greenhouse gas control; (vi) use of catalysts for user-friendly technologies and reduction of indoor pollution; (vii) catalytic processes for sustainable chemistry; (viii) reduction of the environmental impact of transport. Therefore, a significant change has occurred in the last decade in the areas of interest regarding environmental catalysts and in the modality of approaching the research. This review, based on but not limited to the workshop “Environmental Catalysis: A Step Forward” (Maiori, Italy, May 2001), introduces the proceedings of this workshop reported in this issue of Catalysis Today and has the objective of providing an overview to the topic and setting the basis for a step forward in environmental catalysis research.  相似文献
