This report provides a statistical analysis of a Bacillus atrophaeus spore aerosol generated by opening a spore containing letter in an office, simulating the effects of an “anthrax letter”. Spore aerosols were collected by five sets of high-resolution slit to agar samplers in a vacated office building (338.4 m2, 1015.2 m3) during 34 replicates of a single control scenario. Results showed that 0.1 g of B. atrophaeus spores loaded in a letter were easily detected throughout the building following the opening of the letter. Areas under the curve (AUCs) were used to summarize each replicate scenario, and the variability of the AUCs was examined to assess the sample size requirements for future scenario analyses. Based on this analysis a minimum of five replicates of each scenario will be required for future statistical comparison of new scenarios intended to determine the effectiveness of existing or proposed anthrax letter response protocols. 相似文献

Mailing envelopes containing pathogenic spores of bacillus anthraxes, which have recently been used by terrorists to infect humans, calls for a new investigation to identify a level of possible contamination of ambient air as a result of the opening of such envelopes. Here we show that opening an envelope and unfolding a letter aerosolize microbial particles located inside and create their cloud with the diameter equivalent to the length of the letter side along which it was folded. With no motion of an envelope recipient (first case study presented in this paper), the front of the cloud moves due to forced convection caused by the impulse at opening and reaches a human face (approximately 50 cm from the opening zone) in about 6 sec. The concentration of particles at that distance is about three times lower compared to the concentration in the source. Further spread of the cloud brings its front to the distances of 1 and 1.5 meters within 25 and 55 seconds with the corresponding concentrations of around 10% and 5% compared to the source respectively. The second case study presents the results for a more realistic scenario when an envelope recipient, after observing a dust cloud appearing as the result of the opening of the envelope, recoils in fright creating additional air flows significantly disturbing the aerosol propagation described in the former study. It was found theoretically and verified by experiments that the amount of particles captured by the letter recipient varies significantly depending on the geometrical characteristics of the human, distance to the opening zone, reaction time, and recoil velocity. 相似文献

Events following the anthrax letter incidences in 2001 changed many previously held assumptions regarding biological aerosol hazards. As there were significant fatalities resulting from the sorting of a single anthrax letter, it suggests there is a need to reevaluate how best to measure biological aerosols and to use the information to make accurate predictions. This paper describes the biological aerosol created from manipulating envelopes containing Bacillus subtilis globigii spores (a simulant for anthrax). In addition, the measurements on dispersion of spores from an envelope processed by a mail sorter provide important dynamic aerosol characteristics, information previously unavailable for health risk assessment. The findings produced a number of significant aerosol dosage estimates related to spore contaminated letters. Graphic presentations show significant hazard in handling anthrax-laced letters. Aerosol particle dynamics are described and specific lethal dosage values are listed for a range of activities; these will be useful in assisting the modeling community to create more realistic predictions in hazard assessment studies. 相似文献
