Fast tracking of cardiac motion using 3D-HARP   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Magnetic resonance (MR) tagging is capable of accurate, noninvasive quantification of regional myocardial function. Routine clinical use, however, is hindered by cumbersome and time-consuming postprocessing procedures. We propose a fast, semiautomatic method for tracking three-dimensional (3-D) cardiac motion from a temporal sequence of short- and long-axis tagged MR images. The new method, called 3-D-HARmonic Phase (3D-HARP), extends the HARP approach, previously described for two-dimensional (2-D) tag analysis, to 3-D. A 3-D material mesh model is built to represent a collection of material points inside the left ventricle (LV) wall at a reference time. Harmonic phase, a material property that is time-invariant, is used to track the motion of the mesh through a cardiac cycle. Various motion-related functional properties of the myocardium, such as circumferential strain and left ventricular twist, are computed from the tracked mesh. The correlation analysis of 3D-HARP and FINDTAGS + Tag Strain(E) Analysis (TEA), which are well-established tag analysis techniques, shows that the regression coefficients of circumferential strain (E(CC)) and twist angle are r2 = 0.8605 and r2 = 0.8645, respectively. The total time required for tracking 3-D cardiac motion is approximately 10 min in a 9 timeframe tagged MRI dataset and has the potential to be much faster.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate a variational method for joint multiregion three-dimensional (3-D) motion segmentation and 3-D interpretation of temporal sequences of monocular images. Interpretation consists of dense recovery of 3-D structure and motion from the image sequence spatiotemporal variations due to short-range image motion. The method is direct insomuch as it does not require prior computation of image motion. It allows movement of both viewing system and multiple independently moving objects. The problem is formulated following a variational statement with a functional containing three terms. One term measures the conformity of the interpretation within each region of 3-D motion segmentation to the image sequence spatiotemporal variations. The second term is of regularization of depth. The assumption that environmental objects are rigid accounts automatically for the regularity of 3-D motion within each region of segmentation. The third and last term is for the regularity of segmentation boundaries. Minimization of the functional follows the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations. This results in iterated concurrent computation of 3-D motion segmentation by curve evolution, depth by gradient descent, and 3-D motion by least squares within each region of segmentation. Curve evolution is implemented via level sets for topology independence and numerical stability. This algorithm and its implementation are verified on synthetic and real image sequences. Viewers presented with anaglyphs of stereoscopic images constructed from the algorithm's output reported a strong perception of depth.  相似文献

The authors propose a new approach for tracking the deformation of the left-ventricular (LV) myocardium from two-dimensional (2-D) magnetic resonance (MR) phase contrast velocity fields. The use of phase contrast MR velocity data in cardiac motion problems has been introduced by others (N.J. Pelc et al., 1991) and shown to be potentially useful for tracking discrete tissue elements, and therefore, characterizing LV motion. However, the authors show here that these velocity data: 1) are extremely noisy near the LV borders; and 2) cannot alone be used to estimate the motion and the deformation of the entire myocardium due to noise in the velocity fields. In this new approach, the authors use the natural spatial constraints of the endocardial and epicardial contours, detected semiautomatically in each image frame, to help remove noisy velocity vectors at the LV contours. The information from both the boundaries and the phase contrast velocity data is then integrated into a deforming mesh that is placed over the myocardium at one time frame and then tracked over the entire cardiac cycle. The deformation is guided by a Kalman filter that provides a compromise between 1) believing the dense field velocity and the contour data when it is crisp and coherent in a local spatial and temporal sense and 2) employing a temporally smooth cyclic model of cardiac motion when contour and velocity data are not trustworthy. The Kalman filter is particularly well suited to this task as it produces an optimal estimate of the left ventricle's kinematics (in the sense that the error is statistically minimized) given incomplete and noise corrupted data, and given a basic dynamical model of the left ventricle. The method has been evaluated with simulated data; the average error between tracked nodes and theoretical position was 1.8% of the total path length. The algorithm has also been evaluated with phantom data; the average error was 4.4% of the total path length. The authors show that in their initial tests with phantoms that the new approach shows small, but concrete improvements over previous techniques that used primarily phase contrast velocity data alone. They feel that these improvements will be amplified greatly as they move to direct comparisons in in vivo and three-dimensional (3-D) datasets.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a complete system for the recognition and localization of a three-dimensional (3-D) model from a sequence of monocular images with known motion. The originality of this system is twofold. First, it uses a purely 3-D approach, starting from the 3-D reconstruction of the scene and ending by the 3-D matching of the model. Second, unlike most monocular systems, we do not use token tracking to match successive images. Rather, subpixel contour matching is used to recover more precisely complete 3-D contours. In contrast with the token tracking approaches, which yield a representation of the 3-D scene based on disconnected segments or points, this approach provides us with a denser and higher level representation of the scene. The reconstructed contours are fused along successive images using a simple result derived from the Kalman filter theory. The fusion process increases the localization precision and the robustness of the 3-D reconstruction. Finally, corners are extracted from the 3-D contours. They are used to generate hypotheses of the model position, using a hypothesize-and-verify algorithm that is described in detail. This algorithm yields a robust recognition and precise localization of the model in the scene. Results are presented on infrared image sequences with different resolutions, demonstrating the precision of the localization as well as the robustness and the low computational complexity of the algorithms.  相似文献

This paper presents a motion analysis algorithm (MAA) and a hybrid coding method for contour image sequence compression. The contour image sequence consists of objects moving and rotating in a 3-D world with occlusion, shape, and size variations from frame to frame. The MAA separates the moving image sequence into several object-oriented subsequences (OOSs). In each OOS, the component is either stationary or moves smoothly, and the motion parameters can be easily estimated. The first and last frames of OOS are key frames, and the others are in-between frames. The key frames are unpredictable, and the entire frames need to be encoded. The in-between frames are compensable, and they are encoded by the motion parameter coding. The hybrid coder uses vectorgraph coding to remove spatial redundancy of the key frames and motion parameter coding to reduce the temporal redundancy of the OOSs. The motion parameters are encoded as combinations of 2-D translation, 2-D rotation, and scaling. There are many applications for contour image sequence compression. The cartoon image sequence (a sequence of line drawing sketches) and the high-frame-rate videophone for sign language transmission are good examples. Experiments show that our method encodes the contour image sequence at a very high compression ratio without losing intelligibility.  相似文献

Region-by-region comparison of data concerning left ventricular (LV) status is difficult to perform quantitatively if the data was acquired from disparate imaging modalities. We validated a method for comparing measurements obtained by electromechanical mapping (EMM) catheter with dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) via biplane contrast ventriculography, with the assistance of three-dimensional (3-D) echocardiographic data. The ventriculograms were traced and the borders were used to reconstruct the LV in 3-D with the aid of a database of 3-D echocardiographic studies. The 3-D LV was oriented to the EMM data based on the body coordinates and then manually scaled and translated to fit. The EMM data were mapped to the 3-D surface. The 3-D surface was divided into the 16 regions defined for echocardiographic assessment. The mean EMM value for local linear shortening, a parameter of function, was computed in each segment. The EMM and semiquantitative echocardiographic assessments of regional myocardial function were compared by segment, and the volume of the 3-D LV was compared with the volume computed from the ventriculogram. The volume of the 3-D surface correlated closely with that of the ventriculogram (r = 0.97, SEE = 27.4 ml) but with a significant overestimation of 63 +/- 35 ml. There was a highly significant (p < 0.0001) agreement in regional function between EMM and echo. Local linear shortening correlated significantly (p < 0.0001) with echocardiographic severity of wall motion, averaging 9.5 +/- 6.5, 8.1 +/- 5.4, 5.9 +/- 4.8, and 6.2 +/- 3.3 in segments read as normal, hypokinetic, akinetic, and dyskinetic, respectively. The method presented is valid for comparing cardiac parameters derived from disparate image data on a region-by-region basis by employing anatomic landmarks on 3-D reconstructions of the LV endocardial surface.  相似文献

Parameters of cardiac function can be drawn from the analysis of echocardiographic image sequences, especially the motion of the ventricular wall, heart wall thickness, and shape parameters. Automatic image analysis and visualization allows reduced manual operations and, above all, ensures objectivity and repetition of analysis, which is essential when one wishes to calculate parameters based on variations, i.e., on image sequence analysis. In this paper, a system and the related software package for interactive echocardiographic image analysis and visualization are illustrated and discussed. Furthermore, the full model for smoothing, edge enhancement, and contour detection is discussed and a new technique based on the heat anisotropic diffusion model is presented. The results of automatic detection of the left ventricle contours are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Accurate delineation of the volumetric motion of the left ventricle (LV) of the heart from tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important area of research. We have built a system that takes extracted tag line features from short axis (SA) and long axis (LA) image sequences as input and fits a four-dimensional (4-D) time-varying B-spline model to the data by simultaneously fitting the model knot solids to MRI frames via matching three sequences of solid knot planes to the LV tag planes for 4-D tracking. Important advantages of the model are that reconstruction of tag surfaces, three-dimensional (3-D) material point localization, as well as displacement reconstruction are all achieved in a single step. The generated 3-D displacement fields are validated with a cardiac motion simulator, and 3-D motion fields capturing in vivo deformations in a porcine model with posterolateral myocardial infarction are illustrated.  相似文献

In this work, we describe a frequency domain technique for the estimation of multiple superimposed motions in an image sequence. The least-squares optimum approach involves the computation of the three-dimensional (3-D) Fourier transform of the sequence, followed by the detection of one or more planes in this domain with high energy concentration. We present a more efficient algorithm, based on the properties of the Radon transform and the two-dimensional (2-D) fast Fourier transform, which can sacrifice little performance for significant computational savings. We accomplish the motion detection and estimation by designing appropriate matched filters. The performance is demonstrated on two image sequences.  相似文献

Cardiovascular diseases remain the primary cause of death in developed countries. In most cases, exploration of possibly underlying coronary artery pathologies is performed using X-ray coronary angiography. Current clinical routine in coronary angiography is directly conducted in two-dimensional projection images from several static viewing angles. However, for diagnosis and treatment purposes, coronary artery reconstruction is highly suitable. The purpose of this study is to provide physicians with a three-dimensional (3-D) model of coronary arteries, e.g., for absolute 3-D measures for lesion assessment, instead of direct projective measures deduced from the images, which are highly dependent on the viewing angle. In this paper, we propose a novel method to reconstruct coronary arteries from one single rotational X-ray projection sequence. As a side result, we also obtain an estimation of the coronary artery motion. Our method consists of three main consecutive steps: 1) 3-D reconstruction of coronary artery centerlines, including respiratory motion compensation; 2) coronary artery four-dimensional motion computation; 3) 3-D tomographic reconstruction of coronary arteries, involving compensation for respiratory and cardiac motions. We present some experiments on clinical datasets, and the feasibility of a true 3-D Quantitative Coronary Analysis is demonstrated.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for the characterization of coronary artery motion using multislice computed tomography (MSCT) volume sequences. Coronary trees are first extracted by a spatial vessel tracking method in each volume of MSCT sequence. A point-based matching algorithm, with feature landmarks constraint, is then applied to match the 3-D extracted centerlines between two consecutive instants over a complete cardiac cycle. The transformation functions and correspondence matrices are estimated simultaneously, and allow deformable fitting of the vessels over the volume series. Either point-based or branch-based motion features can be derived. Experiments have been conducted in order to evaluate the performance of the method with a matching error analysis.   相似文献

This paper reports on the clinical application of a system for recovering the time-varying three-dimensional (3-D) left-ventricular (LV) shape from multiview X-ray cineangiocardiograms. Considering that X-ray cineangiocardiography is still commonly employed in clinical cardiology and computational costs for 3-D recovery and visualization are rapidly decreasing, it is meaningful to develop a clinically applicable system for 3-D LV shape recovery from X-ray cineangiocardiograms. The system is based on a previously reported closed-surface method of shape recovery from two-dimensional occluding contours with multiple views. To apply the method to "real" LV cineangiocardiograms, user-interactive systems were implemented for preprocessing, including detection of LV contours, calibration of the imaging geometry, and setting of the LV model coordinate system. The results for three real LV angiographic image sequences are presented, two with fixed multiple views (using supplementary angiography) and one with rotating views. 3-D reconstructions utilizing different numbers of views were compared and evaluated in terms of contours manually traced by an experienced radiologist. The performance of the preprocesses was also evaluated, and the effects of variations in user-specified parameters on the final 3-D reconstruction results were shown to be sufficiently small. These experimental results demonstrate the potential usefulness of combining multiple views for 3-D recovery from "real" LV cineangiocardiograms.  相似文献

This paper presents a new method for 3-D tomographic reconstruction of stent in X-ray cardiac rotational angiography. The method relies on 2-D motion correction from two radiopaque markerballs located on each side of the stent. The two markerballs are on a guidewire and linked to the balloon, which is introduced into the artery. Once the balloon has been inflated, deflated, and the stent deployed, a rotational sequence around the patient is acquired. Under the assumption that the guidewire and the stent have the same 3-D motion during rotational acquisition, we developed an algorithm to correct cardiac stent motion on the 2-D X-ray projection images. The 3-D image of the deployed stent is then reconstructed with the Feldkamp algorithm using all the available projections. Although the correction is an approximation, we show that the intrinsic geometrical error of our method has no visual impact on the reconstruction when the 2-D markerball centers are exactly detected and the markerballs have the same 3-D motion as the stent. Qualitative and quantitative results on simulated sequences under different realistic conditions demonstrate the robustness of the method. Finally, results from animal data acquired on a rotational angiography device are presented.  相似文献

In this paper a temporal learning-filtering procedure is applied to refine the left ventricle (LV) boundary detected by an active-contour model. Instead of making prior assumptions about the LV shape or its motion, this information is incrementally gathered directly from the images and is exploited to achieve more coherent segmentation. A Hough transform technique is used to find an initial approximation of the object boundary at the first frame of the sequence. Then, an active-contour model is used in a coarse-to-fine framework, for the estimation of a noisy LV boundary. The PCA transform is applied to form a reduced ordered orthonormal basis of the LV deformations based on a sequence of noisy boundary observations. Then this basis is used to constrain the motion of the active contour in subsequent frames, and thus provide more coherent identification. Results of epicardial boundary identification in B-mode images are presented.  相似文献

This paper is about three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of a binary image from its X-ray tomographic data. We study the special case of a compact uniform polyhedron totally included in a uniform background and directly perform the polyhedral surface estimation. We formulate this problem as a nonlinear inverse problem using the Bayesian framework. Vertice estimation is done without using a voxel approximation of the 3-D image. It is based on the construction and optimization of a regularized criterion that accounts for surface smoothness. We investigate original deterministic local algorithms, based on the exact computation of the line projections, their update, and their derivatives with respect to the vertice coordinates. Results are first derived in the two-dimensional (2-D) case, which consists of reconstructing a 2-D object of deformable polygonal contour from its tomographic data. Then, we investigate the 3-D extension that requires technical adaptations. Simulation results illustrate the performance of polygonal and polyhedral reconstruction algorithms in terms of quality and computation time.  相似文献

State of the art cardiac computed tomography (CT) enables the acquisition of imaging data of the heart over the entire cardiac cycle at concurrent high spatial and temporal resolution. However, in clinical practice, acquisition is increasingly limited to 3-D images. Estimating the shape of the cardiac structures throughout the entire cardiac cycle from a 3-D image is therefore useful in applications such as the alignment of preoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) to intra-operative X-ray images for improved guidance in coronary interventions. We hypothesize that the motion of the heart is partially explained by its shape and therefore investigate the use of three regression methods for motion estimation from single-phase shape information. Quantitative evaluation on 150 4-D CTA images showed a small, but statistically significant, increase in the accuracy of the predicted shape sequences when using any of the regression methods, compared to shape-independent motion prediction by application of the mean motion. The best results were achieved using principal component regression resulting in point-to-point errors of 2.3±0.5 mm, compared to values of 2.7±0.6 mm for shape-independent motion estimation. Finally, we showed that this significant difference withstands small variations in important parameter settings of the landmarking procedure.  相似文献

We propose a new spatio-temporal elastic registration algorithm for motion reconstruction from a series of images. The specific application is to estimate displacement fields from two-dimensional ultrasound sequences of the heart. The basic idea is to find a spatio-temporal deformation field that effectively compensates for the motion by minimizing a difference with respect to a reference frame. The key feature of our method is the use of a semi-local spatio-temporal parametric model for the deformation using splines, and the reformulation of the registration task as a global optimization problem. The scale of the spline model controls the smoothness of the displacement field. Our algorithm uses a multiresolution optimization strategy to obtain a higher speed and robustness. We evaluated the accuracy of our algorithm using a synthetic sequence generated with an ultrasound simulation package, together with a realistic cardiac motion model. We compared our new global multiframe approach with a previous method based on pairwise registration of consecutive frames to demonstrate the benefits of introducing temporal consistency. Finally, we applied the algorithm to the regional analysis of the left ventricle. Displacement and strain parameters were evaluated showing significant differences between the normal and pathological segments, thereby illustrating the clinical applicability of our method.  相似文献

A three-dimensional (3-D) method for tracking the coronary arteries through a temporal sequence of biplane X-ray angiography images is presented. A 3-D centerline model of the coronary vasculature is reconstructed from a biplane image pair at one time frame, and its motion is tracked using a coarse-to-fine hierarchy of motion models. Three-dimensional constraints on the length of the arteries and on the spatial regularity of the motion field are used to overcome limitations of classical two-dimensional vessel tracking methods, such as tracking vessels through projective occlusions. This algorithm was clinically validated in five patients by tracking the motion of the left coronary tree over one cardiac cycle. The root mean square reprojection errors were found to be submillimeter in 93% (54/58) of the image pairs. The performance of the tracking algorithm was quantified in three dimensions using a deforming vascular phantom. RMS 3-D distance errors were computed between centerline models tracked in the X-ray images and gold-standard centerline models of the phantom generated from a gated 3-D magnetic resonance image acquisition. The mean error was 0.69 (+/- 0.06) mm over eight temporal phases and four different biplane orientations.  相似文献

A method to quantify the motion of the heart from digitized sequences of two-dimensional echocardiograms (2-D) echos was recently proposed. This method computes on every point of the 2-D echoes, the 2-D apparent velocity vector (or optical flow) which characterizes its interframe motion. However, further analysis is required to determine what part of this motion is due to translation, rotation, contraction, and deformation of the myocardium. A method to locally obtain this information is presented. The proposed method assumes that the interframe velocity field U(xy), V(x,y) can be locally described by linear equations in the form U(x,y)=a+Ax+By; V(x,y)=b+Cx+Dy. The additional constraint was introduced in the computation of the local velocity field by the method of projections onto convex sets. Since this constraint is only valid locally, the myocardium must be first divided into sectors and the velocity fields computed independently for each sector.  相似文献
